As I’m sure you are aware, it’s been a very challenging year for our Ellerslie retailers, but they have been buoyed by the support of our local community. After a wet spring and more time at home than expected, we hope the publication of the magazine coincides with the beginning of the summer sunshine and with it brighter times ahead!

Ellerslie has done a great job with vaccinations and thank you to all of you who have done your part, not only being vaccinated but those who are working hard to keep us safe, healthy and provide essential services. I’ve enormous respect and gratitude for those in our health system, who in my experience, not only do their jobs with professionalism but also with cheerfulness and positivity. So a huge thank you to everyone who has gone above and beyond at this time.

Sadly, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel our Ellerslie Fairy Festival and Pirate Party for the second year in a row. We tried hard to move to a different date but the funding we use to pay for the parade was closed off, and it simply wasn’t possible to plan, with all the uncertainty around event restrictions. We are however, still working on bringing Santa safely to Ellerslie in a different way – details are currently being finalised, so please see our website or Facebook page for more information In much more exciting and delicious news, we are delighted to welcome Scoop & Smile to the village. Selling freshly-made gelato, ice cream, shakes and waffles, they provide the perfect treat to enjoy on a warm summer day. In other good news, just along from Scoop & Smile, our fountain is once again operating. After being closed for extensive repairs and water restrictions, we are excited to have this back for the summer. It comes complete with newly restored lighting for the fountain itself and improved lighting for the entire square. Thank you

Summer Loving Christmas is only weeks away, and with it, a break that hopefully won’t involve roadblocks or home office Zooms. Wherever you spend your days off, we hope it’s truly relaxing and a good step change after a tough few months. We asked some of our locals what they’re looking forward to about Christmas.

For Maungakiekie MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan (right), she’s feeling the call of the sea, and time to read more than parliamentary papers. “I love heading to the beach with my family, including my two rescue dogs, Gypsy and Mika,” she says. “I love the warm sand, enjoying the fresh ocean breeze and watching the waves. Aotearoa’s Christmas tree, the pōhutukawa, is in bloom with their brilliant displays of red flowers — and it’s hard to go past a good old-fashioned Kiwi barbecue.

“Even though I do a lot of reading in my job, I’m looking forward to lounging on my deck with a book in one hand, and a cocktail in the other. I’ve got a few good political biographies that I’m saving for summer, and hopefully this will be the summer that I finish reading The Luminaries!”

Closer to home, Priyanca will also be letting Gypsy and Mika play at the off-leash areas in Waiatarua Reserve. “On the way home, I’ll be sure to stop off for some kai, and thankfully, we’re spoilt for choice in Ellerslie when it comes to eateries.”

Retailer Barbara Campbell of Violette starts her Christmas prep in October, when she makes her fruit mince for Christmas mince pies. By now, she’s made her cake and flicking through recipes for inspiration. “We’re always busy in November deciding what sweet treats to bake and how to decorate and package them prettily. We give them to friends and suppliers who we want to say thank you to.”

This year, Barbara is tempted by Annabel Langbein’s orange aperitif, which “can be decanted into nice bottles to give as gifts”. (nzherald.co.nz/eatwell/recipes). She’ll also be whipping up a batch of Chelsea Winter’s gingerbread biscuits (chelseawinter.co.nz/christmas-cookies) to decorate — that’s last year’s pictured. And on the day itself? That’s always fun, starting with seal-point Birman cat Lily sporting a themed outfit.

Representatives

Looking Out for the Neighbourhood others are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to move into the area or buy a home locally. I would like to reassure you that the Ōrākei Local Board is carefully watching the progress, and while we are limited in our powers, we will be doing whatever we can to advocate for the best outcomes for the community.

We have already started working with Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi on making the roads safer and fit for purpose with the prospect of increased capacity. It is an ongoing project and there will be opportunities to have a say, and help ensure that the community voice is heard. The first of these projects is the instalment of an additional traffic light on the corner of Morrin St and Ladies Mile (where I'm pictured).

This intersection has been problematic for many years and the increase in traffic has only made it more dangerous. There are also more developments planned for Ellerslie Racecourse that will only increase traffic flows. Many children cross Ladies Mile to attend local schools so this will also help with safety for them. We have had requests to look at the Robert St intersection and we continue to look at solutions for this busy intersection.

As we slowly step out from behind the shadow of Covid-19, we are all hopeful to see industry boom, businesses return to normal, schools function as hoped and our local economies come to life again.

With this is the planned and expected housing developments, many located in the Ellerslie area. Not everyone is excited about the size of some of the proposed developments, while

Another update is the repair of the public toilet block in Ellerslie Village. This ended up as a significant repair that was also slowed due to Covid, but we can now say that we have repaired and improved the toilets. We are also increasing lighting around the Ellerslie War Memorial square to help with safety.

A Pathway Forward Times have been tough in Auckland, but together, we’ve pulled out all the stops to keep each other safe. Now, we’re preparing to transition to a new framework, which will protect our lives, as well as let us live our lives.

The Covid-19 Protection Framework, announced on October 22, is a pathway out of lockdowns, offering certainty to businesses, and giving vaccinated people more freedoms.

Under the framework, fully vaccinated people will be able to visit restaurants, hairdressers and gyms, regardless of alert level. Businesses that require people to show they’re fully vaccinated before entry will be able to operate with fewer restrictions. This means that just like you need to show your ID to enter a bar, you’ll need to show you’ve been fully vaccinated before you can enter places like restaurants and cafés – and if you’re not fully vaccinated, there will be everyday things you miss out on.

That’s why it’s so important to get your first dose as soon as possible, so you’re ready to go when the new settings kick in. Auckland will transition into the new framework once 90 percent of eligible people in each of Auckland’s three DHBs are fully vaccinated, so you’ll need to get your first dose soon.

At the time of writing, 80 per cent of Ellerslie is fully vaccinated. Our target is getting as many people as possible fully vaccinated, because it is the best way to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our community.

However, ensuring that at least 90 per cent of those who are eligible are fully vaccinated allows us to transition out of lockdowns in a way that’s safe.

The government has also announced extra support for businesses to ensure they’re supported as we make the transition. This includes doubling the Resurgence Support Payment, and an additional mental health support package for Auckland businesses. You can find out more about this extra help at covid19.govt.nz.

I know we’re all looking forward to getting out and about – to do the things we love and reconnecting with family and friends. If you haven’t had your first – or second – dose yet, do it today. It’s how we win our freedoms and do the things we love doing. It’s our ticket to enjoying summer.

Helping Get Shot of Covid

and using corporate partners to assist with incentives. Council has also been doing food parcels.

When the lockdown started, I noticed our local providers were struggling to meet the demand. This time round, we have had families lose jobs or income and having to ask for food parcels, when they have never had one before. As a board member of the Glen Innes Family Centre I asked my board for the centre to step in and assist. This has seen me deliver food parcels throughout our ward including Ellerslie, when I’m not in council meetings. I do want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work of the foodbanks and community providers who assist our area: Kai Collective, The Salvation Army, City Impact Church, Ruapōtaka Marae, Young Vinnies and the many, many others.

Kia ora, greetings and talofa lava. I hope everyone is keeping well in this lockdown. I submitted a sort of normal council article to the editor and she suggested I write about what I’ve been doing during this lockdown instead.

As you all know, the way out of our recent lockdowns is through vaccinations. Ellerslie is doing fine in this regard, as of today the vaccination rates are 93.2 per cent first shot, 86.3 per cent second shot — so well done Ellerslie! However we don’t live in a vacuum in Auckland, we travel throughout the city and as we travel so does Covid. So the answer really is vaccination.

I have been active in promoting and supporting vaccination events throughout Auckland to help with getting us over the line (in the photo I am `getting my first shot). At the moment the challenge is the hard to reach ones, I acknowledge we are never going to change those that won’t vaccinate but there are those who are middle-of-the-road, still undecided and I think whatever it takes to get them there the better.

And that includes incentives, or working with groups some may consider questionable.

Council has had a part to play through its emergency management team, set up to assist with welfare and the Covid response. They have been helping councillors with event management for community vaccinations

In terms of council, a lot of the meetings have been around informing councillors and local boards about the various government reforms, so that we are able to form a view as Auckland Council on behalf of our constituents. Recently, this has covered Three Waters Reform, Resource Management (Enabling Housing Supply) Amendment Bill and the National Policy Statement on Urban Development. There are opportunities for you to provide your feedback also: see the ‘Have your Say’ section on aucklandcouncil. govt.nz I recently marked my anniversary of being in local government, and shouted coffees at a few cafes around the ward. In Ellerslie it was at Richoux Patisserie — it was a small way of supporting a local business and I hope some of you got to enjoy the coffee.

Everyone for Cricket!

Despite the uncertainty surrounding when cricket will start for the year, Ellerslie Cricket Club has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that when we do return, we’ll be ready. As we begin to go down the levels and vaccination rates grow, we are one step closer to getting out on the pitch. Some of our players have enjoyed socially distanced fitness sessions as they prepare for the season!

We are still welcoming registration interest for the 2021/22 season, and are open to boys, girls, men and women of all ages and abilities. We offer a junior skills programme on Friday evenings for children looking to give cricket a go. Keeping Us Green It has been a difficult couple of months with the ongoing restrictions, but it seems like we’re slowly turning the corner. It’s great to see how positively Ellerslie has responded, with lots of supportive messages on the community Facebook page and as much buzz in the town centre as is safely possible.

The quiet of lockdown has been a chance to explore some of Ellerslie’s under-appreciated spaces. Did you know we have around 10 parks? How many people can say they’ve visited them all? Take a moment to check out the majestic palms in Derby Downs Reserve, the funky playground at Celtic Cres Reserve, the tranquillity at Lawry Reserve, or the dog exercise area on Cawley St. We have many communal natural spaces in our community which could use more love – the first thing to do is visit! If you have ideas about how to improve them, please get in touch with us or the Ōrākei Local Board.

Speaking of greenery, many residents have taken advantage of lockdown to work on their lawns and gardens. Unfortunately, some have got carried away and been cutting down street trees.

Trees on berms belong to everyone, and their beauty is part of the environment of a liveable suburb. Please don’t cut them down – other people do notice, and we all lose from having fewer trees. Please appreciate our street trees. If you have an issue with a tree on the berm by your property, contact Auckland Transport first, either via at.govt.nz or phoning 355 3553.

The ERA committee continues to work on plans for this year and beyond. If you have any ideas or concerns about issues in our community, please let us know. On the Beat To update you, the CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) for the Ellerslie town square and Ellerslie War Memorial Centre has been completed. The trees are cut back so there is good line of sight from the street into the square and the carpark. New lights have been installed around the rock wall under the trees, so there should be no dark spots for people to hide. The lights around the centre have also been upgraded. It was good to work with Megan Darrow from the Ellerslie Business Association and Cath Duncan from Auckland Council to get the job done.

You can CPTED your own property too. Check your latches and locks, trim those trees and shrubs back. Consider installing an alarm or CCTV system. I upgraded my old outdoor sensor flood lights at home with new, low cost LED lights. They were easy to install and the improvement in lighting around the house and vehicles is amazing.

If a thief walks by your property and the gate, garden shed or garage door is wide open, they cannot help but look in and see what is worth stealing. Make sure the bikes and tools are secure and not left in plain sight. Knowing how a burglar thinks and operates is great information to assist with putting measures in place to prevent burglary and vehicle crime.

If we can get out of Auckland to go on holiday, remember to secure your property. Leave an internal light on and maybe the radio on

talkback. Have a neighbour or friend clear your mail and bring in the rubbish bins. If you don’t know your neighbour go and introduce yourself and work together to keep an eye on the neighbourhood.

There has been some great work done by the community in reporting mail theft and burglars. This has allowed the police teams to make prompt arrests. If you see something happening, call it in straightaway. Note location, descriptions and take a quick photo if possible. If you can, keep an eye on them from a safe distance and let police communications know if they are on the move.

We are looking forward to more ‘Coffee with a Cop’ sessions in Ellerslie as restrictions lift. Come along and have a chat with Sergeant Alfie, Senior Constable Tony and me and let us know any concerns that you may have. I keep wanting to add ‘and donut’ to the sign — but it seems too clichéd!

On to text scams. Over the last few weeks, I have seen a massive increase in the number of mobile phone ‘text scams’ being sent through the Vodafone network. I have personally received over 20 scam messages. All of these text messages varied in content; however, they all had an http link to click. Rotary Club of Ellerslie Sunrise has been in full swing getting the NZ-made puddings ready for sale. Since Rotary started this seasonal fundraiser, more than $2 million has been raised nationwide.

This year, pudding sales by Ellerslie Rotary will benefit the Ellerslie Community Patrol, Ellerslie School, Stanhope Road School, Bailey Road School and Panmure District School. The 700g fruit-studded delights are packaged in an exclusive ‘Kiwi icon’ wrapping, and are vacuum packed for freshness.

Rotary puddings are $20 each and available for pickup locally from Ellerslie club president Mirko Poetzcher’s office (Genesis Advice), Building 4, 195 Main Highway. Toys for All New Zealand is a melting pot of cultures and Ellerslie certainly lives up to this, and for many is one of the reasons we love living in the area so much. The Ellerslie Toy Library recently noticed that it was lacking diversity in language and traditional play options and has made steps to improve this. Following the receipt of grants from the Mazda Foundation and Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board, some lockdown toy purchases have had a focus on culture. Embracing Māori, Pasifika and Chinese languages, now there are more puzzles with simple words, alphabet and counting learning tools, either bilingual or with a mix of languages.

“This is only the start, as we continue to renew and update our toy selection with a mix of languages, traditional play, faces and activities to appeal to a wide range of children’s interests,” explains Sam, the toy library librarian. Enchanting Fun with Kindy We returned to One Tree Hill Community Kindergarten at the beginning of Term 4 with small ‘bubbles’ of children. It has been so lovely having some of our children back, but we are missing our other friends and look forward to seeing them soon.

Over lockdown, we kept in contact with families via our Storypark app, posting suggestions for activities. This platform also provided opportunities for parents and whānau to share what their families had been up to.

We have also sent out goody bags to our children who are staying at home. One of the activity packs had items that the children could use to make fairies, elves, and little people to add to the fairy garden we are creating at the front entrance of the kindy. Both the children attending and those still at home can then contribute to it, keeping up our connections in a safe and positive way.

Tai Chi Keeps Moving Lockdown has temporarily suspended Ellerslie tai chi classes, which will begin again when Leicester Hall can be accessed. Tai chi improves both the mind and the body and helps you keep active and mobile for longer, and you can also continue your tai chi practice at home.

Try this exercise to correct posture. Start by sitting in a chair. Try not sitting back and not sitting forward, but in the middle — imagine a string gently lifting upwards from the tailbone to the crown of your head. For standing posture, we again use the idea of a string from your tailbone to the crown of the head. Stand comfortably with your feet hip-width apart, not standing on the heels or the balls of the feet, but in the middle. Imagine that string. It is important for balance to work on breathing from the lower abdomen. Try this in a chair, placing a hand on the lower abdomen. As you inhale, feel the tummy expand and imagine the string supporting your posture. As you exhale, you will notice the string softening as your tummy contracts.

3. Boil each colour group separately in a saucepan of water until you can see colour in the water 4. Sieve the contents of the saucepan into heat proof containers or jars to cool 5. Once cool, get creative by splashing or painting the coloured water onto your watercolour paper, then wait until dry 6. Place fresh flowers face down on your dyed paper and cover with a clean sheet of paper. Gently hit the flowers with a hammer to leave a beautiful, colourful impression!

GLOOP (we recommend this for outside, as it could get messy) Ingredients: 2C cornflour, 1C cold water, food colouring (optional) Method: 1. Mix cornflour and water together in a bowl.

2. Add a few drops of colour if desired.

You can add more cornflour or water during play. Once it dries, gloop easily brushes off clothes and surfaces.

You can use a sieve to drip the gloop through. Make different batches using primary colours and see what happens. This is a great activity to support children’s language. Ask them what it feels like, share what you think it feels like, and discuss what you think will happen if more water is added.

Playtime at Home with Playcentre It has been a challenging few months, and we at Ellerslie Playcentre are missing the fun, learning and sense of community our sessions bring to both our tamariki and us as educators.

Neuroscience educator Nathan Wallis emphasises the important message that “play isn’t a precursor to ‘real’ learning. [Rather], it is a method of evolving that facilitates higher intelligence.” Playcentre gives our children a safe and thought provoking place to learn through play. They have space to be curious, creative, problem solve, experiment and develop their own relationships and social skills in a mixed age setting. Children get to experience a variety of experiences that can be difficult to provide at home because of the mess and those really important social interactions that strengthen communication skills and nurture social and emotional competency.

FLOWER ART What you need: Freshly picked flowers, an old saucepan, a sieve, heat proof jars/containers, watercolour paper, a hammer.

Steps: 1. Pick some brightly coloured flowers from your garden (or, with permission, from friends’ and family’s gardens!).

2. Separate the flowers into similar colours, but save a few for the last step.

This dough is great to use as you can paint the creations once they are dry. Excellent for making Christmas tree decorations.

Ingredients: 1½C salt, ¾C cornflour, 1C cold water.

Method: 1. Slowly mix the ingredients together in a pot then cook over a low heat stirring frequently.

2. Mix well and knead immediately, be careful as the dough will be warm.

3. Make your creations.

4. Leave for 36-48 hours to harden and then paint.

Try using cookie cutters to shape the creations. Explore your garden or local area to see what would make prints, such as leaves or shells.

Creative Zooms at Michael Park

Hermione, aka Ruiha, magics up some Harry Potter fun for Michael Park's Book Week.

Lockdown for our lower school has still brought some smiles at Michael Park. For our annual Book Week we were transported into the wonderful world of books. We had dress up Zooms, quizzes, scavenger hunts and book title selfies. Our wonderful staff and senior students dressed up and read their favourite books via video and created activities like ‘How to make your own notebook’. We combined this with the Cancer Society fundraiser, Daffodil Day, and our parents were generous with online donations.

We also celebrated Māori Language Week. The tamariki, whānau and staff had fun. We entered in the national Māori Language Moment and had 90 participants on Zoom. Some classes participated in a scavenger hunt, while others, staff and whānau, participated in a ‘Māori Chef’ competition. From rēwena bread, kawakawa roasties, oven hāngī to seafood 20

fritters, boil up, and kawakawa ice-cream, it was he reka! Yum! Kia kaha ki te kōrero Māori — be strong to speak Māori. Thanks to Bagstille for the beautiful linen bread bags they donated as prizes.

We ended the term with an online tiara/crown afternoon tea.

The idea came from one of our Class 3 students, who was thinking of the residents of the Mercy Parklands hospital, our neighbours and reading buddies. Staff and senior students shared ideas for decorating cakes and cookies, napkin folding lessons and making tiaras out of toilet rolls. We encouraged students to write or draw pictures, which we scanned and sent to the residents of Mercy Parklands to let them know we were thinking of them. A few even joined us on our Zoom afternoon tea to see our amazing tiaras, crowns, and cake and napkin creations. It was a wonderful way to end our lockdown term.

Online with Stanhope Road

We’ve all heard about it – schools are closed and kids are learning online at home. But what does that actually look like?

Stanhope Road School tells us how they’re making at-home learning engaging and meaningful for their students.

Stanhope Road Associate Principal Melinda Bell is all about student engagement and she wasn’t going to let a little thing like a lockdown change that for her students even though it meant they needed to learn online. “What’s most important for us is that our kids and their families want to turn their device on each day to continue their learning,” Melinda says. “And to do that, our teachers try to keep it relevant, achievable and enjoyable.”

Between them the staff have had plenty of experience doing just that and the school reports a consistently strong daily online attendance rate. Creativity and thinking outside the box is key to a positive home learning experience – kids and their families like having the opportunity to express themselves and show what they’ve been up to at home.

“Whānau challenges like The Amazing Race and MasterChef drew a huge response and it was really lovely for us to see families having fun together. Language weeks have been great too, as our community celebrates their culture’s language, food and customs.” Other popular challenges include Random Acts of Kindness, Stanhope’s Got Talent and the Haka Challenge.

Of course, there are plenty of reading, writing and maths assignments and these are delivered to students through Seesaw, an easy-to-use online application that allows students to read a question, post an answer and receive feedback from their teacher. Kids can also make and send photographs and videos, and many assignments are interactive. Classes have Zoom meetings with their teachers each week where they do activities, work through assignments together and share what’s been happening in their bubbles.

“It’s a great way to connect with others at a time when students are really missing their friends and teachers,” says Melinda.

“Even though it’s not the perfect learning environment, we’re really proud of how our school community has stayed strong and stayed in touch throughout.”

Team Efforts at OTHC One Tree Hill College students are continuing to produce outstanding results despite being plunged back into remote learning on August 18. I am constantly amazed at how adaptable and resilient our young people are, and the last 15 weeks have only highlighted that even more.

In NCEA, students are on track at all three levels to gain outstanding levels of achievement. I wish to acknowledge the manner in which students, teachers and families have combined together throughout lockdown to create the best possible outcomes. From the countless Zoom lessons taking place, families juggling spaces, sometimes sharing computers at home, and teachers being super-professional despite often having their own children to cater for – it has been a real team effort!

Obviously, a lot has had to change in the second half of this year. There are many school events and celebrations which can no longer proceed given the restrictions in place. However, at One Tree Hill College we have made a huge effort to ensure our most prestigious celebrations still take place in some form. Our senior prizegiving was held online, streamed live for all to see.

Our junior prizegiving will follow a similar format.

The supreme award of Dux Litterarum, for our top academic scholar, was awarded to Bree Felton. Bree was also awarded a University of Auckland Top Achiever Scholarship for her exceptional leadership and academic achievement.

Here, she shares a sweet treat that makes a lovely gift, and highlights two of the food offerings just around the corner.

Buon Appetito Italy is one of my favourite countries to visit.

I feel so at ease there that I've wondered if I have Italian ancestry. I love wandering the streets, strolling alongside the locals as they collect produce, pause for espresso, gesticulating as they dramatically exchange newsworthy gossip.

We can enjoy the same sense of community as we revisit the nooks of our own neighbourhood, deepening our friendships and supporting local vendors in our village.

Travel overseas may be difficult but we can experience another’s culture through the food we create.

Years ago, I lived in Siena, where I immersed myself in a language programme, experienced the Palio and ate copious triangles of panforte. Whilst it may be a Christmas tradition throughout Italy, panforte originated in the 13th century in Siena, and locals delightedly share it with visitors all year round. Make your own as an edible gift or keep some on hand to surprise unexpected guests who pop by for tea.

Ingredients for panforte vary amongst Italian bakers, towns and provinces. Feel free to find your own perfect combination. The true Kiwi tweak will be in your choice of honey — each style offering unique flavour outcomes.

Panforte 350g hazelnuts (without skins) 150g plain flour 300g candied mixed peel, chopped 2 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg ½ tsp powdered cloves 150g acacia or clover honey (or a floral liquid variety of choice) 150g icing sugar, plus some for dusting 3 tbsp water Preheat your oven to 180˚C (non fan bake) and line an 18cm springform tin with a carefully cut circle of baking paper to fit the base of the tin.

Spread the nuts out on a baking tray in a single layer. Toast them in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove the tray and carefully give them a shake before toasting for another 5 minutes. Remove the tray and allow the nuts to cool slightly. When cool enough to handle, tip them onto a chopping board and chop roughly. It is fine to have some large chunks and uneven sizes as this adds texture to your panforte.

Add the chopped, toasted nuts to a large bowl and measure in the flour, candied peel and all the spices. Stir to mix.

Measure the honey, icing sugar and water into a small saucepan and place over a

low heat. Stir with a wooden spoon until it becomes a thick golden syrup. Remove from the heat.

Pour this syrup into your dry mixed ingredients. Combine with a wooden spoon. Scrape the mixture into the lined cake tin and smooth the top with the back of a metal spoon. Dust the surface with more icing sugar and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Remove the panforte from the oven. Let it cool for about 15 minutes. Take the panforte out of the tin and allow to fully cool on a baking rack. If you wait too long 23

for it to cool in the tin, you may struggle to loosen the base and remove your cake. If this happens, you can warm the tin again in the oven to soften the honey and remove easily.

Once the panforte is cold, dust generously with icing sugar. Wrap in clingfilm and baking paper or gift paper. Panforte keeps for up to three months in an airtight container, or fridge.

Tips: Candied peel can be replaced with figs, dried apricots, other favourite fruit flavours or a combination. Substitute hazelnuts for almonds, walnuts, pecans or add a sprinkling of each.

Some traditional recipes use a pinch of mace added to the spices.

Around the Village If you like Piña Colada . . . . . . you’re going to be very happy with the gelato at Scoop & Smile, the newest foodie arrival to Main Highway. A passionate baker, owner Brenda Toh says her ice cream venture allows her to stretch her imagination with her flavours. Brenda, who lives locally with her family, knows ice-cream is a sure way to bring a smile.

Her own favourite is her durian gelato, but she knows it may be a tricky flavour profile for some of us to cope with. Served in waffle cones or on a waffle, yoghurt and cheesecake options are proving popular, as are peanut butter and hazelnut.

“I love to design delicious flavours and watch people try my creations,” says Brenda. “It’s such a wonderful feeling when they come back and let me know how good it was.”

Fired Up As the long warm summer days settle in, we drift onto decks, uncover the BBQ, fill chilly bins with ice, and invite friends over for casual entertaining. This blissful, relaxed style captured in photographs, depicts hazy days where adults languidly lounge as children play in the backyard.

For your own easy Ellerslie entertaining, here are some shortcuts to set you up for summer success. Ian Groves, who has owned Ellerslie Meats for 21 years, has a small store, bursting with all your BBQ needs. He's a selfconfessed lifelong learner of his trade and the team offer a one stop local butcher experience.

Grab the finest in-house free range sausages and pair the pork, apple and fennel with a homemade slaw, smashed potato salad and a dollop of Jenny’s Tamarind Chutney. Or try the meaty pork spare ribs with a smoky, sticky and sweet glaze from his condiment shelf.

Novice pitmasters will find favourites like the beef short ribs or brisket with rubs to match. I recommend the black truffle rub which can also add a touch of class to roasted vegetables, potatoes or whipped butter. If you are looking to up your skills and do a little smokin’ at your place, Ian supplies bags of mānuka chips. Ask for his advice if needed, as he uses them to smoke bacon and ham for the shop.

On days when you’re looking to keep it simple, opt for preprepared burgers, sausages, marinated butterfly chicken or saucy skewers. These are ready to cook and with a Kiwi produced mustard or sauce on the side, it’s the perfect solution for speedy entertaining. Ian looks after your furry friends too, with homemade delectable dog treats so that noone feels left out.
