Projects completed this summer ensured school buildings were ready to welcome back students last week.

“This was a very busy summer,” facilities coordinator Jim Prusa told Community Consolidated Elementary District 181 Board members at their Monday meeting.

Crews deep cleaned the school buildings, performed maintenance work on HVAC equipment, waxed tile floors and shampooed carpets at all nine schools.

One of the bigger projects was at Clarendon Hills Middle School, where a contractor completed underground plumbing repairs near the first floor main restrooms, and all surfaces above 18 feet in the gym were cleaned.

Additionally, some new lockers were installed, the sidewalk in front of the handicap parking area was reconfigured and a teacher center was created.

“This was done with all stored equipment in the Madison basement,” Prusa said of the teacher center. “The only thing purchased on this was the countertops.”

Oak School also benefited from a significant improvement.

“This was the biggest project we did as far as construction, and I’m sure the staff at Oak School would like me to thank you for authorizing this project,” Prusa said.

The ceiling in the main office was remodeled to address noise generated by the air handling unit, which Prusa described as almost unbearable.

“They would turn it off and go without heating or air conditioning. You couldn’t hear on the phone,” he said.

“The noise level is 2 percent of what it was before.”

Girl Scout project reaps for those in need Group of Hinsdale girls create ‘HCS Giving Garden’ to provide produce for food pantry

The green thumbs belonging to a group of local Girl Scout Juniors have meant fresh vegetables this summer for clients of the HCS Family Services food pantry.

Back on Mother’s Day weekend, six Hinsdale fifthand sixth-grade members of Troop 51159 planted a “HCS Giving Garden” to cultivate fresh vegetables for needy families. They also hoped the community service would earn them a Bronze Award, the highest award for Junior level Girl Scouts.

“We knew that people who relied on the food pantry didn’t get much fresh produce,” said Sydney Thayer, a fifth grader at The Lane.

Julie Suarez, HCS food pantry coordinator, said she loved the idea and knew food pantry visitors would, too.

“I give away a lot of canned tomatoes, but when I have fresh ones, certainly the fresh ones go first,” she said.

Guidelines for growth During the course of creating and cultivating their Giving Garden, the Girl Scout Junior amateur horticulturalists picked up a few lessons on proper vegetable maintenance. Here are a few: • “Only put on inch of soil on top of the carrot strips or they will get too packed and it won’t be able to grow correctly.”

• “You can’t get (the carrot seeds) wet before planting them.”

• “Use cages for the potatoes (to keep them from spreading out)” • “Leave the potatoes in longer (than you expect) until the plants are tipped over. You could even leave them in until September.”

• “Give the cucumbers a little bit more water than other plants.”

• “You have to dig a big trench for the potatoes. It’s supposed to be about a foot deep.”

lage officials about locating it on the Memorial Building grounds, in close proximity to the food pantry, That would not work, they were told, so Dan Hopkins, the village’s horticulturist, directed them to a plot of village-owned land adjacent to Peirce Park, just south of Wellness House.

“He basically cut out the bed for us,” Sydney’s mom Barb Thayer said of Hopkins’ assistance.

Another nice feature of the site was that the park’s drinking fountain provided a convenient water source.

One of the girls’ fathers outfitted the garden with a railroad tie frame and chicken wire, and other family members chipped in as needed.

The girls decided the crops they would grow: basil, carrots, cherry and globe tomatoes, cucumbers, and banana and jalapeño peppers.

Each girl took ownership of a vegetable, but they took turns tending to and watering the entire garden from week to week.

Caila Foley, a fifth-grader at The Lane, said her family had a small tomato plant at home but was excited to raise a variety of vegetables.

The Fischer sisters — Hinsdale Middle School sixth-grader Denise and The Lane fifth-grader Lucy — said they were in charge of the carrots.

They researched care instructions ahead of time, but they said carrots require patience.

“A few have grown, but since they’re pretty picky, not a lot have sprouted yet,” Lucy said.

Mary Claire Arbor said harvesting is fun but sometimes takes more effort than she expected, especially the potatoes.

“We picked one potato, but then we came back the next day and there was a huge potato that we missed,” she said.

The bunnies posed a minor threat, but Anisha Sunkara, a sixth-grader at Hinsdale Middle School, was just as concerned about wayward projectiles as Little Leaguers warmed up for baseball games.

Sydney Thayer said gardening on one of the summer’s sizzling days was the equivalent of a workout on the TV program “The Biggest Loser.”

In the end, the basil, peppers and tomatoes produced a bounty, while the cucumbers suffered from the drought conditions. The carrots and potatoes were finicky but fruitful.

On Aug. 20, the girls received their Bronze Awards. One of the criteria to qualify is that the project can be sustained and passed on to the next group of Juniors.

Denise Fischer said the girls are confident that will happen.

“Some people from our Troop said they want to try it and see what they can do,” she said.

Suarez said she was delighted to see the girls come in each morning the pantry was open to deliver the most recent harvest.

She is heartened that the girls understand that others their age may not have the same food security.

“They would bring me a big bag of vegetables, and we would put it out, and people just loved it because it’s

Lucy Fischer said it was gratifying to go into the food pantry and see their contributions flying off the shelves.

“It was really nice to give people food that didn’t have all the choices that we have at the store,” Lucy said.

The girls said they plan on checking up on the garden

next year to make sure their successors are maintaining the legacy.

They also indicated that their days of giving will not end once this harvest concludes and the bed has been cleared.

“It’s kind of like getting a reward because you see all the happy faces,” Anisha said.

“You know you’re doing good for all the people who don’t have this produce.”

• postponed a vote on a three-year lease for almost $187,000 for phase 3 of the district’s current four-year computer replacement cycle. Board members were unhappy to learn the lease included more than 400 iPads and that most of the machines slated to be replaced are still working.

• discussed the possibility of refinancing part of a 2004 bond issue to save $2.7 million. The board essentially has three options: reduce payments by the same amount every year, accelerate payments for a greater savings in the long run or extend the debt to minimize payments over the repayment period. The board will revisit the refinancing at its Sept. 10 meeting.

• reviewed a proposed fund balance policy for the district, which was recommended by bond rating agency Standard & Poor’s. The draft suggested a range of 25 to 50 percent of annual spending; the board suggested setting a minimum of 30 to 35 percent. The board asked the finance committee to review the policy and make a recommendation.

• directed Superintendent Renée Schuster to create a plan to switch from district-supplied smart phones for administrators to a monthly stipend for administrators who need smart phones.

• heard board member Yvonne Mayer announce that she will make a motion at the Sept. 10 meeting to eliminate the middle school A.C.E. program for the current school year, based on what she called incomplete data that administrators supplied to board members • considered two additional board agreements suggested during a self-evaluation session Aug. 13. They call for the board to “keep body language neutral” during meetings and to not to interrupt one another or administrators.

• approved a new performance evaluation system for principals in the district as required by state law.

• agreed to move the Oct. 9 meeting to Oct. 28 so it will take place after community engagement meetings set for Oct. 15 and 16.

In the Aug. 23 story, “District 86 officials weigh process of delivering public information,” an incorrect date appeared for Bruce Davidson’s Freedom of Information Act request filing and an incorrect reason was given for its denial . Hinsdale competes at Chicago Kids Triathlon Madison boys learned a lot from their coach and are ready to take on challenge next year

Ten-year-old Ethan Lin is no stranger to athletic competition.

He swims at Ruth Lake Country Club and also participated in a 1-mile “try-athlon” in Indiana. So when he was asked if he wanted to train with Ryan Halpin for the Chicago Kids Marathon, he said yes.

“I wanted to do it because I thought it would be a great experience for me and, since I did an earlier triathlon, I thought I could do a second one,” Ethan said. “I thought this one was more fun than the first one that I did. It was an awesome time. It was really fun.”

Ethan, Ryan and four of their friends from Madison School trained with Ryan’s dad, Matt, over the summer.

Ethan was the top finisher of the group, coming in 16th overall and 11th in the boys division and in his age group (see chart).

He was pleased with his results.

“The Kokomo one, I didn’t even train — I just showed up,” he said. “This one I trained and put a lot of effort to it.”

Ethan’s mom, Dinna Lin, gives a lot of credit to Halpin for his work with the boys.

“He was just a phenomenal coach,” she said. “They learned the nuances that you would get from someone who is a triathlete. I think the reason Ethan did so well and excelled because of Mr. Halpin.”

Ryan Halpin, Ethan Lin, Carter Smith, Carl Hinchman, Michael Benington and Matthew Hoffend competed in the Chicago Kids Triathlon Saturday. Their coach, Matt shallow water, she said.

“He was able to get these kids a lot of little pearls that took them really far,” Lin said.

Carter Smith also was pleased with his performance. His finish in 25 minutes and 12 seconds beat his target of 33 minutes, and he also was faster in each part of the race than he had hoped.

“I feel really excited because for a first race, being able to say that I broke all my goals is really kind of relieving, because I was scared that I wouldn’t do well when I first got into the race,” Carter said.

Like Ethan, Carter found the running component to be the most difficult. Where Lin enjoyed the swimming portion of the contest, Carter preferred the time he spent on his bike.

“That was the easiest for me. I biked a lot more outside the practices,” he said.

The training was tough, he said, but worth it.

“It was pretty hard because Mr. Halpin made us overdo it so it was way easier when we got into the triathlon. We felt like it was nothing,” he said.

Halpin and Ryan started competing in the triathlon in 2010. This year Halpin asked Ryan if he thought any of his friends would be interested in doing it with him. Five boys, all 10 years old and now in fifth grade at Madison, signed on. Their earliest meetings after school let out in June covered the basics of competing in a triathlon, such as what order the events are in and how the transitions between events work.

Toward the end of July, they stepped up their efforts.

“We got a little more serious,” Halpin said. “I actually pulled out a calendar and said we should probably start working four days a week.”

Halpin started training for his own competition in January, but the kids’ version of the race requires less preparation. The boys had to swim 100 meters, bike 4 kilometers and run 1 kilometer.

“Most of these are distances these kids can manage without dedicated hard-core training,” Halpin said. “I think part of the training was just putting it all together.”

Halpin offered high praise for the event, which requires kids to complete the transitions during the race on their own. When they come out of the lake, they have to find their bike and put their shoes and helmet on without assistance.

“My attitude is these kids have to learn to do it on their own. There’s not some adult saying, ‘You can do it’ every step of the way,” he said.

He is proud of how well the boys did.

“I think they all did great,” he said. “I think they all learned a huge amount. I think they all seem very posi-

tive. Certainly (the) feedback is they all want to do it again next year.”

Dinna Lin agreed.

“It was a great learning experience for the boys to set a goal and work together and help encourage each other to keep on going,” she said.

“That is the reason I thought it was so awesome.”

Halpin also encouraged other kids to participate in next year’s race.

“However you do it, this Chicago triathlon is a wonderful event,” he said. “It’s well-run, it’s well-organized.

It is run like a professional event.”

Police on watch for late-night law-breakers Hinsdale police are intensifing their late-night traffic enforcement through Sept. 3., targeting impaired drivers and safety belt violators.

The effort, combining the Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns, underscores the disproportionate number of traffic deaths occurring during the overnight hours.

Police recommend the following simple steps to avoid a tragic crash or an arrest for

impaired driving: • Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys. • If you are impaired, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely. • Promptly report impaired drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement. • Wear your safety belt. It is your best defense against an impaired driver.

60 SECONDS KENNETH MOY Growing up in Elmhurst in the 1930s in a laundry shop with parents who couldn’t speak, read or write English, Ken Moy was at a distinct disadvantage as a young pupil.

“I couldn’t read until I hit the fourth grade,” the 79-year-old said. “That’s how I grew up, isolated in the laundry.”

But neither that nor the sanctioned discrimination of the time discouraged Moy, and he went on to become a wellregarded attorney, judge and three-term DuPage County Board member.

“I’m thankful that, despite all of the so-called problems of life, I was able to overcome and be as successful as I have been.”

Moy’s parents immigrated from China in the 1920s, when an uncertain fate in the U.S. held more promise than the bleak prospects in their homeland.

His father came to America as an “adopted” son of a citizen who was paid to claim parenthood, thereby getting around the Chinese Exclusion Act that restricted Chinese immigrants.

“That’s why, in the Chicago area, you have all these Moys,” he said, noting that his father then brought his mother over.

As a child, Moy felt less privileged than his suburban peers.

But he also remembered feeling quite wealthy after sending proceeds from a World War II war bond to his grandmother in China, whom he had never met.

“She apparently danced all over the village and said, ‘My grandson, I’ve never seen him and he sent me this money!’ ” A significant source of support during Moy’s childhood was the wife of the minister of the local Lutheran church, where he and his sisters attended Sunday school.

“She told me I could do anything I wanted to do.”

He set his sights on a career in medicine, while his parents

hoped he would take over the family laundry and restaurant business. Medical school, however, proved too tough to manage while also helping out at home. So he pursued law and graduated from John Marshall Law School.

Finding the job market lean for a Chinese-American lawyer in the 1950s, Moy caught a break with an influential laundry customer. “(The DuPage County state’s attorney) hired me because I used to iron his shirts,” he said.

But Moy’s race compelled a caveat.

“He said, ‘I can’t let you try criminal cases because the juries may go against us,’” he related. “So I became civil division.”

He then went into private practice, banking on his integrity to bring in clients and referrals.

“It was rewarding to help people and find out that people liked you,” he said. “That was my reward, being accepted in that sphere.”

Moy’s dream was to be a judge, but he was advised to expand his political base first. He was elected to the DuPage County Board in 1983, serving until 1996.

“I had no base. I had no pedigree,” he said. “(I won) because I was able to work hard and pay my own way.”

That paved the way to the DuPage County Circuit Court, where he served until retiring in 2007.

Moy now looks after his wife, Patricia, who resides in assisted living with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Witnessing the effects of her condition is sad, he said, but he can also celebrate the journey that has brought him further than anyone could have imagined.

“I really have been lucky to have been able to utilize my DNA as best I could.”

Value of Hinsdale Historical Society rises as time goes by It’s been said that one’s path ahead is invariably informed by the path already traveled.

The Hinsdale Historical Society’s aim is to be not only the repository of the village’s past but an interactive resource to help today’s residents appreciate and preserve that heritage even as time marches on.

Over the past year, The Hinsdalean has endeavored to communicate the impact of the historical society on both the personal and communitywide level through our Making a Difference partnership.

We shared with you the tireless volunteers that lead and lean into the organization.

Without the benefit of an executive director, they and three part-time staff are able manage and maintain the Hinsdale History Museum, the R. Harold Zook Home and Studio and Immanuel Hall.

We learned the Zook Home, relocated to its new home in KLM Park several years ago, has 14 different levels and a ladder extended from the entryway closet to the third floor.

The museum houses a fascinating and carefully sorted archive chronicling the town through the years. We combed through files of poignant clippings and vignettes for a story on Hinsdale Christmas seasons gone by.

Over at the Roger and Ruth Anderson Architecture Center, we were amazed to learn that most village residents can find some documentation related to the heritage of their homes or parcel. Take a stroll down the oneblock Blaine Street for a frozen-in-time view of how a typical village block looked at the

turn of the century.

While architecture may be the most prominent vestige of the past, the historical society offers a diverse menu of programs highlighting different dimensions of the lives of foregoing generations.

Village resident and fashion design instructor Efry Ayala conducted a three-part series on fashion history, and this past year children had the chance to construct miniature Lincoln-esque log cabins and make traditional holiday decorations.

Not all citizens have an organization to safeguard their town’s legacy. Hinsdale does, and we have come to realize that is a treasure in itself. The fact that the historical society is privately funded and largely volunteer run makes it all the more noteworthy.

We hope our effort to share the work of the Hinsdale Historical Society has been both a source of insight and inspiration for our readers. It has certainly been enlightening for us, and we trust the light it sheds on the village’s past will continue to help illumine the community’s way forward.

Thanks to Hassett for making disc golf a reality Tuesday was very special at the KLM disc golf course, which would not have been built without the leadership of Gina Hassett, director of parks and recreation.

I was at the practice hole warming up about 9:30 a.m.

A large van parked and 12 excited kids got out. Two adults started to lead them to the first tee. I thought I would get ahead of them so I could get home before noon.

The man leading the group caught my eye, so I asked if he needed help. He said yes, as he was leading this group of children with special needs (middle and high school age) from Lyons Township and didn’t know much about the game, but had seen the course and read about it in local newspapers.

I became a teacher to these kids.

I suggested they play a scramble and use the red tees. Chuck Farnsworth, the man leading the group, thanked me for the 10minute introduction.

I teed off alone ahead of them to cheers as my best-ever shot on No. 1 came very close to the pole! For the next hour, I could hear laughter and screams of joy and see the kids running to the next tee as if it were Halloween with the excitement of getting to the next house.

KLM brought tremendous joy to these kids today, but even more to me, as this course brings a wonderful activity to Hinsdale.

Hinsdale caucus meets next Sept. 5 The Hinsdale Village Caucus will meet at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 5, in the large meeting room of the Hinsdale Public Library, 20 E. Maple St. The meeting is open to the public.

In the spring of 2013, voters will be asked to elect a new Hinsdale Village Board three new president, Hinsdale Village Board members, three Community Consolidated Elementary District 181 Board members, and four new Hinsdale Public Library trustees. In advance of the April 9, 2013, election, The Hinsdale

Village Caucus will work to identify, nominate and endorse candidate slates for each local governing body.

At the Sept. 5 meeting, the caucus’ second, delegates will be placed on nominating committees— one for each of the governing boards and one for the caucus executive committee. In accordance with its by-laws, the caucus will use a random process to assign delegates to nominating committees. The randomness is used to ensure open and unbiased results.

will work throughout the fall to recruit, select and nominate highly qualified candidates to run for election to serve in the various local elected offices. In late November, the caucus will re-convene to review the nominating committee recommendations.

Wayne Kuna has a simple reason for wanting to help spread the philosophy of Soul Priority to local business leaders. As a former business owner, he saw what bringing faith into the work world can accomplish.

“They really have a heart to impact business with the teachings of Jesus,” he said. “I had no idea quite what that meant. I know as a person who brought their faith to work on a regular basis that I saw miracles.

“I was in a secular company. When I saw what happened when a person went to work as a shepherd instead of as a manager and they cared for the people and cared for the environment that people worked in, people thrived,” he added.

Kuna brings his own experiences as the owner of a toy inventing company and as the former senior pastor of Oak Community Church in Hinsdale as he works with Soul Priority to launch a “marketplace ministry” in Hinsdale. Soul Priority’s mission is to encourage and coach business leaders “to repurpose their career, their amazing abilities and their responsi-

bility to honor God and to serve others with faith’s best practices,” according to the website.

Kuna meets with two attorneys, an executive/life coach, an entrepreneur, a police captain and someone who works in information technology for 50 minutes every Wednesday morning at Cosi. Two other mentors are working with groups in Barrington and Downers Grove, with the goal of eventually having discussion groups at or near the more than 100 train stations leading into Chicago.

Meetings begin with everyone weighing in on a particular topic.

“We then turn and look at scripture to find what God’s paradigm is,” Kuna said. “Now everybody has a chance to decide if what they said is consistent with scripture.”

He has three goals for participants: institute new best practices at work, share the information with a coworker and consider starting another group.

“So far it’s been really exciting. All the groups have grown. I’ve grown as a person. I’ve been really fascinated to see the diversity of people who come through,” he said.

“In big brush terms, everything we do that honors God and to his name I believe is worship. He loves it, He just loves it,” he said.

Kuna said he is a fan of capitalism, but it needs some retooling.

“I think capitalism is hurting,” he said. “I think it’s broken. I think it needs its heart back. I think it needs its soul back. I think there’s a place for capitalism to have a morality that doesn’t look like Bernie Madoff.”

First, Kuna said business leaders must significantly change their thinking about their own success.

“Maybe I’m just the steward of all this stuff and maybe I didn’t earn it the way I thought I did,” he said.

“Maybe God gave this to me.”

Those who choose to serve the people they lead at work will see those principles working in their personal relationships as well.

“I believe (it) is going to stimulate and encourage and motivate people to be even more engaged in their faith family,” Kuna said. “Know it’s more than just an hour. It’s more than just Sunday. It’s about my whole life and it’s about me impacting lives.”

Crews added and leveled 30 yards of topsoil to eliminate the lip in the parking lot.

“This is going to be an ongoing issue because of the soil conditions of the area.

It’s peat and it just keeps sinking.

Rather than addressing it every year we have to wait until it gets obnoxious,” he said.

Hinsdale Middle At School, a new watertight cove base in the restroom should help address mold issue. Some work also was done on the bus loop and improperly installed tile in the commons area.

At Monroe School, new computer lab doors were installed to create a more open feeling.

“It looked almost like the doors to a prison waiting room,” Prusa said of the old doors.

At Elm School, much of the work involved administrative spaces. A sliding wall also was replaced between two rooms and the administrative parking area was reconfigured to allow angled parking.

“We did have some fender benders so we reconfigured the parking along the Scurve with the angled parking to avoid the accidents that were happening,” Prusa said.

Some work was done at The Lane media resource center and the parking lot and playground were seal coated and striped.

Minor projects also were completed at Prospect and Walker schools in Clarendon Hills.

Members of the 10th Illinois Infantry Regiment and their families will depict life in a Union military camp in 1863, complete with authentic clothing, weapons and tools.

Bob Winter, a lifelong Civil War enthusiast, joined the volunteer group in 1989 after seeing a reenactment at Graue Mill.

“I started out as a private in the company and learned how to do things. It’s a lot of fun sharing the knowledge that you have and teaching people about the Civil War,” he said. “(Reenacting) was more of a living history education than going out and doing a battle.”

Winter, a Lombard resident, said he enjoys helping visitors of all ages understand the way soldiers worked to survive the often harsh wartime conditions in this pivotal event in American history.

“Something interesting to me was it

was fought here in the United States. It took the (the U.S) from individual states to becoming a nation,” he said.

After working his way up the ranks of the regiment, Winter was eventually promoted to colonel of the Illinois Battalion, which is made of up eight different companies in the state.

The volunteers wear uniforms and clothing representative of the era, and visitors won’t see any processed food in the camp cooking demonstrations.

“We do things the way meals would have been prepared if they got fresh food, using an open fire and Dutch ovens,” Winter said.

The day will also feature drills and black powder firing demonstrations that follow the manuals Union soldiers used.

While most of the weapons used are reproductions, several muskets are originals, Winter said, and will be on display for visitors.

“People will be able to see and touch them. That’s something that’s really unique.” he said. “It’s almost like going to a museum, but you get to touch the stuff.”

Over the years, Winter said he has deepened his own insight into the Civil War through helping others deepen theirs.

He said its gratifying “for people to walk away knowing a little bit more about our country and what the struggle was about.”

That goes for so-called Civil War buffs, too.

“I even like it when the people who know a lot can walk away saying, ‘I didn’t know that,’” Winter said. “When you have 3 million men fighting, no one person will know everything. I think that’s what really intrigues people about it.”

He encouraged people and families to take advantage of the picturesque venue and the interactive nature of the reenactment with crafts for children.

“The mill is fantastic. It’s a period setting. We get the people involved. If they get tired of it, they can take a nice stroll down the river,” Winter said.

purpose at all times. I think that she has high expectations for herself. I think she has a little pressure. I think she wants to continue that legacy (of her siblings) and leave Hinsdale Central with something as well.

Jacquelyn Bruns, she pretty much started golf her freshman year and she has had three amazing years. I think this year she’s another one who has high expectations for herself and wants to do well.

Danielle Brown, she’s someone who is just a delight to watch. She can hit the ball probably just as long as any guy and she’s got a great personality. She’s always smiling. I think we’ll do very well because of that type of attitude.

We have two juniors that were on varsity last year, Cailee Beisswanger and Madelyn Swank. They had great experience last year and I think being that top

six, top seven, I think they’re really going to want to grab those reins and do really well.

Outlook: I think that we’re a strong team and I think it’s not going to come down to the game aspect, the physical part of it, but keeping the mental part of the game strong. If we can keep the mental game as strong as the physical, I think we can achieve anything we want to achieve.

Furthermore: I love our schedule. I love going against all the teams from our conference to the DVC to the North Shore. It’s a great game. I don’t think there is any team that we ever play that our kids are not friendly with. The coaches are all friendly. It’s a fun season to be involved in. I just think we want to enjoy the year and whatever happens, happens. We want to play our best and face the challenges in a positive way.

Football First game: Aug. 23 vs. St. Charles North (V wins 30-0) Last year: 6-4, lost in the first round of playoffs Coach: Rich Tarka No. years coaching: second as head coach at Central, more than 30 years coaching No. varsity team members: 78 Strengths: I think we definitely have more experience than we had last year.

Offensively, we have a really excellent passing attack and we expect that to continue. I think we found we had a running game besides. The running game was what was missing from our offense last year. Definitely I think we have quite a bit more speed than we had last year, and I think we’re just going to be better there.

Challenges: It’s always a challenge to be in the West Suburban Silver Conference.

We have a lot of opponents who are really good and getting better. Glenbard has had our number for a number of years now. Lyons Township is definitely a solid program.

I think Oak Park-River Forest can contend. Our biggest challenge is just our conference schedule.

Who to watch: Brian Owens, our quarterback. He had a super year last year as a junior after winning the quarterback battle after the third game. He threw for over 1,800 yards and set a record. He’s just been progressing in a really good way for us. He’s been a real leader. It will be interesting to see how far he can go.

Andrew Pyle, he was an All-Conference linebacker for us. This year, he’s starting to learn the game at a higher level and more in-depth and it’s making him a better player on the defensive side of the ball.

The offensive line, it will

be interesting to see how they progress. We have four seniors and a junior. They’re big kids and they’re strong.

The average weight on the offensive line is 275.

Jack Adams is playing running back and safety. He’s a captain and he should be able to do a lot of good things for us. Also Brian Allen (center) and Ian Bunting (receiver).

Outlook: I think we’re going to do very well. Last year we made the playoffs, a step in the right direction.

We’re in a position to make the playoffs again this year with the talent and the work ethic we’ve had and the experience. We hope to contend for the conference title and progress in the playoffs as far as we can.

Furthermore: Our kids have invested so much in the off season. When that happens, it tends to lead to success.

What do you enjoy about the sport?

I just enjoy all the friendships that I’ve made. Even though it’s an individual sport, for me it’s like a family. I swim the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle. I’m really competitive.

What do you find most challenging about swimming?

Probably all of the time commitment. It’s basically like a part-time job. It’s hard to find time just for myself between swimming and school.

How have you improved since freshman year?

I think I know now not to let little things get to me. I think I’m more focused and more of a leader on the team. Freshman year I was so nervous, I felt like I didn’t have much fun. I’m trying to have more fun with it. I just found out I was named team co-captain.

What do you do to prepare for a meet?

I always have blue Gatorade, and I usually listen to music. People know before my race to let me do my thing and not bother me.

What are your goals for the season?

My goals are just to do my best and hopefully get a few relays to state and get to state individually. I had shoulder surgery five months ago. Last year I didn’t perform as well as I would have liked because of my shoulder. I’m not expecting so much right away. Hopefully I’ll be good in the next few weeks.

How would your teammates describe you?

I provide the entertainment for the team. I always make people laugh and try to keep people’s spirits up. I think I push people to succeed.

Do you hope to swim at the next level?

I’m focusing on choosing the school first and then choosing if I’m going to swim. I’ll definitely do recreational swimming just to stay in shape.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

From my coach, the best piece of advice is just to stay positive and not set your goals too high and set yourself up for failure. I have a tendency to think too much about things because I’m really competitive. Always stay positive and good things will happen.

Fall season under way for Red Devil teams Boys and girls golf, football teams hope to capitalize on athletes’ experience and enthusiasm

Before classes began last week at Hinsdale Central High School, athletes in some fall sports had faced their first opponents. Nine teams will compete over the next several weeks, with post-season games extending into November.

This is the first of three articles previewing fall sports at Central.

Golf, boys First game: Aug. 14 vs. OPRF (V wins 169-207) Last year: 10-2 in dual meets, fourth in state Coach: Jess Krueger No. years coaching: starting seventh as head coach, 17 years coaching at Central No. varsity team members: 13 Strengths: Probably their enthusiasm, and they work pretty hard.

Challenges: Just experience. (We have) three returning golfers from last year. Three of my starters were seniors, so there are going to be three new faces in that mix. We’ll see what happens.

Who to watch: David Whinery, he’s a senior. He is our leader, team captain. A nice sophomore, Brian Dolehide, he’s doing real well for us.

Outlook: I’m optimistic we can compete at the conference level. It’s going to be a strong conference. Lyons Township (will be our toughest opponent). We’re just looking to try and duplicate last year, make it all the way to Bloomington and see what happens.

They know each other very well — not only their games, but also the mental part and the social part. I think the experience of the previous three years,

going against the schedule, going against a lot of the top schools in the state and prepping and taking it day by day (will be a benefit).

They understand my philosophy of taking it day by day. We don’t think about what’s going to happen next week or at conference or at state. We play with a purpose. Everything is about what we’re doing right now.

They’re very receptive to it.

Challenges: I think their biggest challenge is they

They have played together for three years. They’re going into their final year. They want to do well. They want to be one of those top three teams. They want to bring home trophies. They want to bring home medals. I think that pressure and stress that if they don’t do it, then they haven’t had a successful season. I don’t care what the end result is. It’s all about if we play our best golf, then we have been successful.

There’s a great quote I just heard. He’s a former track Olympian. He said success isn’t based on the number of wins you have. It’s about the challenges you face and how you face them. I definitely have adapted that to our team. I think that should be the mentality every year that we play.
