State of the University Address Karlton D. Smith Contributing Writer

Howard University Interim President Dr. Wayne Frederick gave a State of the University address during the Faculty Senate Assembly and later to students at the Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 16. His deep knowledge and ability to give sound explanation of university affairs, willingness to speak candidly and honestly about critical issues and overall compassion for his alma mater is a much-needed breath of fresh air and was well received by the Howard Community.

Dr. Frederick, who previously served as the Provost and Chief Academic Officer, is a three-time graduate of Howard University attaining a bachelor’s, a medical degree, and a master’s of business administration.

He spoke to the community about Howard’s financial state, Howard University Hospital, student and alumni relations, the effects of the government shutdown, plans for the provost’s and CFO’s positions, and fundraising efforts.

This change in the university’s leadership comes after months of public scrutiny and internal differences that began with the leak of Board of Trustees member Renee Higginbotham-Brooks’s warning letter in late April. The memo called for “crucial decisions” and a vote of no confidence in President Sidney Ribeau and Board Chairman Addison Barry Rand.

Following a tense three-day meeting of the Board of Trustees, President Ribeau emailed the Howard community a brief letter announcing his sudden retirement at the end of the year. Effective immediately, Dr. Frederick has been solely responsible for the day-to-day operations of the university since Oct. 1.

In August, the university began a search for a potential buyer or major partner for Howard University Hospital, which lost $21 million in the 2012 fiscal year and saw a 12% decrease in patient enrollment. It is not unusual for an academic hospital to have a major partner and Dr. Frederick claimed not to “see any direct negative impact” in regards to the search for partners. The hospital is one of the nation’s few, and only HBCU entirely owned and operated by its namesake university. Concern has been raised that the potential sale would destroy the hospital’s position as a teaching facility. Howard University’s College of Medicine produces more African-American physicians than any other institution and boasts the only College of Dentistry in DC. Dr. Frederick believes that despite financial troubles and any future partnerships, Howard Hospital’s mission for teaching is important and vital.

“The structure will have to include an academic affiliation so that we can train future doctors. Health Science’s service excellence initiatives have been augmented this year to improve patient satisfaction and quality scores, which are still at unacceptable levels” The hospital also receives a portion of The Capstone’s federal appropriation, which has been a subject of unease in the wake of the government shutdown. Dr. Frederick made it clear that the battle in Congress had a direct affect on operations.

“The government shutdown is impacting cash flow at about $7 million per week including a $55 million impact from the delayed appropriation payment,” he said.

Dr. Ribeau, who only served The Capstone for five years, left a month after Howard’s ranking dropped 22 places in the U.S. News and World Report and credit score demoted from A3 to Baa1 by Moody’s Investor’s Service. During Dr. Frederick’s address he agreed, “The negative outlook warrants caution.” Moody’s asserted Howard Hospital, management, enrollment, and federal budget cuts as primary issues.

Despite the tense atmosphere of Howard’s administration, Dr. Frederick championed the Howard community’s recent achievements and goals. Upon the approval of a contractor, the Undergraduate Library is slated to reopen in 14 months and the construction of the new dormitories and the Interdisciplinary Research Building are on schedule.

Dr. Frederick stated, “With the publication of Howard’s recent US News and Report rankings, we are evaluating our process as well as the context for reporting information on the University’s key performance indicators.”

He hopes to raise the current freshman retention rate from 83% to 95% and the graduation rate from 63% to 80%. Mentioning his own fond experiences at Howard, he stressed the importance of alumnistudent relations and working to

raise the extremely low percentage of alumni contributions: proposing a 5% tuition-return incentive upon graduating in four years and alumni hosting interviews for prospective students. Both ideas garnished interest and applause from the audience.

“I am certain that our determination to improve on-time graduation through revised curricula for all undergraduates will result in the meaningful outcomes that we are committed to ensuring that our students achieve,” said the Interim President. He also urged the need to bring students, alumni, faculty, and administrators all together.

Faculty, alumni, and students are all major stakeholders who have a common focus when it comes to Howard University. Shana Ervin, the president of the Howard University Alumni Club of Greater Washington hopes to build a connection between alumni and the interim president.

“It is important for the local DC club to have a great working relationship with Howard University and if we can establish that through this current interim president, hopefully that will set the groundwork for us to have a continued relationship with whomever the permanent president will be. Our purpose is to give to students. It’s all about the students; to make you all’s experience a little bit better,” she said.

Faculty Senate Chair, Dr. Lorenzo Morris, is focused on faculty having a say in decisions as well as support for research and resources during this time of leadership transition.

“The most important thing is that the faculty have an active role through the Faculty Senate in decisions being made. As well as reinforcing the educational technology and services available to the students and us. We are concerned, that things be stable and that the teaching environment be solid but we also want to add to the support for research in a variety of areas both STEM, and cultural and social areas so that faculty can do the kinds of research we want to attract both students and funding to the university. We want to strictly reinforce or encourage the university administration to look to institutional development and the acquisition of appropriate institutional resources through fundraising.” “ My main concern is that we

not lose focus on the core of this university’s mission and our work as faculty. And that is to teach. Everything else, research…service… is driven by that and the connecting concern is that nothing happens at this university that veers from that,” said student advocate and professor Dr. Gregory Carr when asked about his main concerns as a faculty member.

HUSA President, Anthony Miller, who hosted the Town Hall Meeting, hopes to build “an open and transparent relationship” with Dr. Frederick.

“We share our ideas and the student’s concerns and he specifically addresses them to the student body,” he said. “He shows that he is serious about solving a lot of them.

He expressed his understanding of the valid concerns and he’s listening to us. Part of the reason we decided to have this town hall meeting because we wanted students to understand.”

Many students such as junior, Kali Stewart and Kenneth Jackson were really impressed by Dr. Frederick at the Town Hall Meeting.

“I think that as a three-time Howard grad, he is someone who has the university’s best interest at heart and I am excited to see where his new ideas will take us. I hope that he remains in a leadership position at Howard,” Kali Stewart stated.

She is worried about who will be the permanent president and what that means for student life and activities.

Jackson feels because Dr. Frederick is a product of Howard and knows the common struggle of the student, that it “brings a lot of hope when it comes to getting things done like upgrading our systems and technologies. It seems that [our internet and facilities] are something he’s very interested in. He gave a lot of clarity to our financial state.”

“Discovery and research that has changed the impact of healthcare disparities, education, and religion,” Dr. Frederick declared as he concluded his State of the University Address. The thread that binds it all together is steeped in social justice and reflected in a pool of uncompromising excellence. Our journey to our rightful place is one that must be travelled together. I ask you to join me today in a commitment to our great University.

Life as a Fashion Show Model Leanna Commins Contributing Writer Buying tickets, filling out visitation forms, searching relentlessly for the right dress and heels, waiting impatiently in long lines, rushing off to beauty salons, and, of course, jumping up and down with excitement are all a part of the preparation for Howard University’s greatly anticipated homecoming week. But for those walking the runways of the highly-attended fashion show, there’s an added on workload that comes with homecoming preparation.

Sophomore fashion design major and model for the fashion show, Howard Daniel, explains the fashion show preparation practice schedule: “At first, it [the practice schedule] was chill, it was okay.

It was just every Wednesday and Thursday from seven to nine p.m.”

Daniel says, “We’d often get out early back in September and even the beginning of this month because, I mean, there’s was nothing left for us to really do.”

But, according the Daniel, the schedule the week of homecoming becomes extremely intense. The models are expected to practice from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Wednesday and eight a.m. until the end of the show on Thursday. Despite the vigorous schedule, Daniel says that practices are enjoyable.

“It’s just a really fun environment.”

Daniel says, “Everyone’s just having fun. I mean, we do get down to business and we learn the different walks and the different formations for the show but, for the most part, practices were something I enjoyed going to.”

And if people were wondering

whether modeling for Howard homecoming is as competitive and petty as the real-world modeling industry, Daniel clears the air.

“In my eyes, I feel like everyone is working for the common good to better the show, to make sure the show is successful.” Daniel explains, “I don’t feel like there’s any haters or people in competition because it’s not that serious. No one’s pressed to be better than everyone else.”

Daniel made this time-consuming but fun commitment as a freshman as well; that was his first time modeling ever.

“People were telling me I should [model for the fashion show],” Daniel says when explaining why he decided to try out to become a model for the fashion show. “I like to try new things so I was like ‘why not?’”

When asked if the tryout process was an intimidating process, Daniel shrugs it off.

“The audition itself was very simple.” Daniel explains, “I just had to go in, get a number, and walk.”

Despite how simple the tryouts for the fashion show might be, Daniel does have some advice for potential models.

“Be confident.” Daniel suggests, “For the ladies, know how to walk in your heels because that is what I’ve seen at try-outs. Not everyone who started in the show knew how to walk, but you should come with an idea of you what you’re supposed to do.”

Daniel himself has struggled with hitting his stride when it comes to modeling. “[The fashion show coordinators] said I had a problem with my confidence,”

Daniel confesses. “I was nervous. I didn’t want to mess up the show; I didn’t want to be that guy.”

Daniel also says walking down the runway poses a problem for him.

“I had no idea how to do a model runway walk and I’m still working on that,” Daniel says. “But [the fashion show coordinators] worked with me and worked on my confidence.”

Even so, Daniel says the problems with his nerves and confidence are much better this year and that improvement can be attributed to experience.

Daniel accounts: “This year, I feel like I know a lot of the people, I know what to do, I know how the show is typically ran. So it’s not that bad.” Daniel says, “Last year, I was nervous the first time I walked out, but then I realized people were cheering for me. I heard a loud roar through the building, so that had killed any nerves I had.”

So, what can Howard students and alumni expect to see at the fashion show?

Daniel hints, “without a spoiler alert, I know it’s going to be more than just your average fashion show.” He says, “It’s going to be a SHOW. We’ve got all these different opening scenes, tribute scenes…we’ve got a lot going on.”

Daniel acknowledges that the fashion show is just one important facet to the EPIC Homecoming at Howard University. Whether performing, coordinating, choreographing, or cheering on fellow students and favorite celebrities, everyone can get involved in the university’s homecoming.

“Whether you’re on the stage or in the audience, you’re participating.”

Daniel advises, “Homecoming is one of the biggest events at Howard. I definitely say get involved.”

Top Safety Precautions To Take at Yardfest Shannen Hill Staff Writer

Yardfest is always known to be a good time, but safety is key. Below are some precautions that should be taken at this year’s Yardfest.

1. Don’t bring anything that can be easily lost.

2. Bring plastic bottles instead of glass because if a glass bottle breaks, someone can get hurt or cut.

3. Don’t eat or drink anything given to you by someone that you don’t know.

4. Stay close with your group. Yardfest is huge and

once you separate from your group, it may become impossible to find them.

It will be 55 degrees during Yardfest, so dress accordingly.

5. Bring cash instead of a card. The vendors only take cash anyway.

6. Be patient. There might be lines this year because of the ticket process, but everyone with a ticket will get in.

7.Don’t run towards commotion.

Come with a positive attitude and avoid confrontation.

In five years, REVOLT will be available on a billion devices, that’s just a reality. The definition of TV is changing. You will be able to walk around with TV, see it in the sidewalks, up against buildings and someone has to provide the musical content for that. REVOLT will provide musical content; REVOLT will be the actual playlist for your life..

I think that utilizing all of the social communities will actually help REVOLT not be apart of the conversation but start the conversation, it’s going to give us our solid credibility.

REVOLT, a new division of Comb Enterprises, is hoping to fill the gap that many music lovers elude has been present since the final days of Total Request Live and Yo! MTV Raps. Diddy describes REVOLT as a “social by design” network that is built to coincide with social media and is directly catered to the millennial generation. This music network is currently available on Comcast and Time Warner Cable channels in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Currently, REVOLT has plans for expansion to other markets in early 2014.

The Hilltop: First of all, we would like to congratulate you on the launch of REVOLT. I know it’s super exciting.

Diddy: Oh yeah, it’s definitely incredibly exciting. It’s historical. It’s one of the biggest things I’ve ever done. I’m overwhelmed with the nervousness and excitement. It’s not everyday that a hometown boy from Harlem or a Howard Alum gets their own network. A real network, a network that in the years to come will compete in ratings and viewership with the HBOs, the AMCs, and the ESPNs. The Hilltop: Definitely. How did the idea of REVOLT come across to you?

Diddy: The idea of REVOLT came across to me because I felt like music didn’t have a home, I remember my experiences when I was coming up as a kid: I had Soul Train, American Bandstand, Rap City.

There was a platform for music.

When I was putting out “Last

Train to Paris”, my last album, I realized I was going to places that weren’t about music and musical artists trying to get exposure. There was actually no place for me to go if I wanted to tell the whole story about why I made “Last Train to Paris.” I talked to my fellow artists and they were in agreement: There needed to be a place that was solely about music. Just like ESPN is the home for sports and CNN is the home for news, REVOLT will be the new #1 home for music.

The Hilltop: I know that since your ‘97 album, No Way Out, the industry has definitely changed -- especially the hiphop industry. How would you describe the current state of hip-hop?

Diddy: I see a shift in hip-hop, I see artists taking more chances.

I love what Kendrick Lamar has done to the game, and I also think Nas’ last album was underrated. I love Jay Z’s latest

album. I love what Chance the Rapper is doing. I love what Travis Scott is doing. I love what the Weeknd is doing.

I think that there are artists coming out that are just starting to push the boundaries and the envelope with music. There is also a whole generation of people who have been doing that and more and have been taking more chances and they don’t have a place to play their music except for YouTube. There still needs to be a place where you can unplug, get off your computer, and let your fingers rest.

A place where you can relax, dance and enjoy the situation.

The Hilltop: What kind of spirituality or mentality have you possessed throughout your career to obtain the things in life that you have?

Diddy: If it weren’t for Howard, I wouldn’t be where I am

Diddy: I think power comes from the things that you speak.

The things you speak come

today. Howard gave me a global outlook and started my entrepreneurship. It was the greatest experience of my life. It was the first time I saw people from different countries: Africa, Europe, even the Caribbean. It’s the first time I realized there was a world out there, it gave me a global point of view and let me know that my dreams could be limitless. They really wrapped their arms around me and empowered me and that’s why I love Howard University.

back to you in existence -- if you believe them. That’s why I’m going to try my best to speak about positivity in life and have a good time changing the world, getting money, and having fun.

The thing that has been my secret is my relationship with God. I wouldn’t refer to myself as a religious person but a spiritual person that is brought up by the laws of right and wrong.

I try my best to do right and I’m not a perfect human being, but because of the grace of God; he has brought me to this point and has brought me through all my trials and tribulations. That is why today is a great day and it feels great. I want to make my mother, my kids, and my family proud. I also really want to make my Alma Mater proud.

The Hilltop: It is a common stereotype of black individuals in power to not hold the door open for the younger generation, how do plan to avoid that with REVOLT or future endeavors?

Diddy: Aw man. My whole life has been about breaking down the door for young AfricanAmericans. My whole thing has been to be an example. You don’t have to be a rapper, you can be an entrepreneur, you can be a CEO, you can be a businessman. I’m going to continue what I’m doing and do even more. I do plan to coming back home what day.

The prodigal son will return back to Howard and be able to make a difference there too.

The Hilltop: Awesome.

REVOLT is super keen on using social media for branding. How do you think social media will continue to be utilized?

Diddy: That’s a great question. REVOLT is the definition of social

of years. I feel like Howard is our Harvard. I feel like when you get a Howard degree, you shouldn’t have a problem getting a job anywhere and I feel like we weren’t using the strength and power of our Alma Mater and the strength of what we represent. I think he has a very contemporary, futuristic vision about education and about where Howard can still go and keep on evolving. For him also being a classmate of mine, I was proud of him and I was also extremely proud of the Howard University board itself realizing they needed to take a chance on someone who was a little bit more connected to the students and their dreams and goals.

The Hilltop: Wow. So Dr. Frederick is your former classmate right? Has he shared any goals or ideas with you?

Diddy: Dr. Frederick has shared goals with me. I was concerned about Howard, I’ve been concerned for the last couple

Yardfest Q&A: How It Will Work Shannen Hill Staff Writer

Yardfest has always been a huge event with large amounts of people.

However, this year greater security precautions will be taken. With the new ticket process, students have been asking about what is going to happen on the day of Yardfest.

Chief of Police Leroy K. James and Deputy Chief Alonzo Joy Jr. sat down with The Hilltop to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Yardfest procedures.

Q: How are you all preparing for Yardfest this year?

A: The way we’re preparing is how you prepare for any large event. Our goal is to make sure that those events are safe.

Everybody is working this week for all of the events. Particularly for Yardfest and the game, we’re going to have metropolitan police officers and private police officers come in to help us. We will barricade the perimeter of the yard and people will need tickets to come in. We’re also

setting the stage up differently.

Q: How will the ticket procedure work?

A: At each gate, there will be a person there from the staff who will then receive the tickets. We will have safety and security folks there as well.

Q: Will students be able to re-enter?

A: Yes, students will receive a wrist band so that they can come and go as they please.

There will be plenty of gates to enter and leave. You can also get $5 off at the bookstore when you show your ticket stub from Yardfest.

Q: Will tickets be sold the day of ?

A: Yes. Tickets will be sold in Crampton until the end of Yardfest at 6:00 p.m.

Q: What prompted the decision to have tickets for Yardfest?

A: Last year there was pushing and crowding, and people got hurt. That was one reason and then the rain storm. There was lightening and electronics on the stage. Our students and alumni, and whoever else were out there were in jeopardy. It was pouring. That told us that we have to take better precautions. Also, one of the things that we have to comply with is the DC fire marshals, and they come in inspect to make sure that there aren’t too many people. We have to follow city regulations as well.

Q: How will students be able to enter class if they have a class on the yard?

A: They will have to use the Sixth Street entrance or other entrances that aren’t through the main event area. There will be security at the doors of each building that lead to the main event.

Q: Will there be a bag check?

A: We are not doing bag checks this year, but we have been working with the general council and the Howard community as a whole to let people know what will not be allowed at the events. Alcohol and drugs are not allowed on Howard’s campus and there is a zero tolerance for anyone who chooses to ignore that. We’re not there to lock people up, but if we have to, that’s what we have to do.

Q: How will you all deal with frustration because of the lines?

A: While lines may be out of the norm for Yardfest, it is not out of the norm for other events that we have at Crampton or Burr where we use bicycle racks to funnel folks for safety and organization. We just ask that our students, alumni and community be patient and have respect for one another.

Q: What precautions should students take?

A: Please don’t drink. Last year we had to carry some people out. There’s a way to have a good time and a way to embarrass yourself. That’s not what Howard is about and we have to protect our image. This is an event for everyone to come together and celebrate Howard.

Q: Is there anything else that either of you wanted to add?

A: We certainly want people to have a good time, but there needs to be more safety. We feel that having enough officers to provide people with directions and having the gates set up around the perimeter will do that. It’s not about giving people a hard time, it’s about safety.

The Beginning of ‘EPIC’ Tiffani DuPree Contributing Writer Large crowds of students poured into Greene stadium as a mixture of popular songs from the marching band resonated throughout the area. It was official: the beginning of an “EPIC” week.

On Tuesday October 23rd, the 2013 Howard University Steering Committee presented the first ever homecoming pep rally. Entitled “Bison Madness,” the event unleashed the Bison spirit within all who attended. Jordan Bailey, a senior Radio, Television and Film major, coordinated the pep rally that had students cheering on performances by the Bisonettes and the cheerleaders as they hyped up the crowd.

“For this to be the first pep rally, it was EPIC for real,” said junior Sports Medicine major Akilah Flowers.“[The Homecoming Committee] has been trying to make things EPIC and this was a good start!”

As with many Howard events, student radio station WHBC-96.3 was there to provide the beats. DJ LR and DJ DeTroyt played a mix of some of the hottest hits and 90’s jams from artist like BelBiv Devoe to Luther Vandross which constantly had students on their feet,

dancing and singing along with the music.

Later, Sharaya J. wooed the crowd with her synchronized choreography and upbeat songs.

“Honestly, it’s like a family tradition to come to Howard’s homecoming, but I’ve never been to see one, so all of this was great!

I loved everything about it,” said freshman Biology major Dayna Jones.

“The pep rally was fun; I can’t wait until next year. I just wish Missy Elliott would have performed,” said sophomore Legal Communications major Taylor Ross.

The pep rally brought the enthusiasm for all the athletic teams, not just football. Members from the tennis, basketball, track and field teams and more all made appearances on the field to talk about their current or upcoming seasons. They also thanked the student body for its support – which continued at the rally. During each presentation, every athletic team shouted the familia “HU…!” while the crowd of students roared back, “…You Know!”

Following the tradition of every Howard homecoming event, there were also special celebrity guests in attendance. They included “Love & Hip Hop” reality star Yandy Smith, a Howard alum; rapper Missy Elliott; and rapper and choreographer, Sharaya J. The students broke out into cheers and screams once they learned the identity of one special guest: Missy Elliott. Some students ran from their spots on the bleachers to get a closer look at the artist as she arrived.

The pep rally, a positive event for the student body, also reminded everyone about the importance of staying safe during the homecoming festivities. There was a moment of silence for fallen bison Omar Sykes and Alonzo Guyton, both fatally shot in alleged attempted robberies.

It was a moment to remember that although this is an exciting time for Howard University, students should always be aware of the dangers that can occur.

Overall, the first annual pep rally successfully prepped students for the busy homecoming week ahead and made everyone excited to be a part of such an “EPIC” experience.

He Said...

Who goes broke quicker during Homecoming [Males or Females]

If we stick strongly to the phrase “ who goes broker quicker,” it would have to be women. Women go broke quicker in the preparation of homecoming; the hair, the nails, the shoes, dresses, etc. are more than what any guy would commit to just to go out.

Plus, most cats always have the one go-to outfit for every big occasion. The haircut won’t break your pockets, the cost to get into the club is what we’re used to, and gas is accounted for.

She Said...

Even with freshly laid hair ($150), nails done ($65) and at least 7 new outfits ($200), best believe men go broke quicker than women. No matter how much money a woman spends to look popped during the most Legendary week of the year, there is a man taking her to the club ($75-$100), buying her tickets to events ($20-$45), covering her drinks at the bar ($50), getting her 3am meal at The Diner ($40) and paying for her taxi ride home in the morning ($20).

Oh, and don’t forget the $50 shirt she’s wearing when she leaves so that she doesn’t have to do the walk of shame in her THOT attire. For every one item a woman pays for, a man is paying double.

However, what can make a man go broke is paying for women and carrying their expenses. Single women are the only people I know that account the probability of a man -- new or old; paying their way into their budget. Whatever assumption you have for a guy paying your way isn’t real money; it’s imaginary. You don’t base your worth on what you think is coming in, only on what you physically have.

During homecoming, things do sort of balance out. Chicks usually won’t get in for free and around this time, most of us will have to pony up to party. The goal now is just how little you’ll pay and the pressure of making sure you spend your night in the right venue.

To the women, don’t get in your feelings because I’m definitely not trying to call you out. Having a good time costs money and if you can find someone to pay for it for you, there is no shade on your game. I fully support the movement -- as long as there’s a man out there that will. I think every Howardette needs a Homecoming Sugar Daddy. At the end of the day, Homecoming is hunting season and everyone is fair game; but we ladies will not go broke participating. Thanks boys!

Truth is: If you’re prepared for the debauchery a few weeks before, your bank account will survive. If you didn’t, you’ll be eating PB&J sandwiches with a hollowache in your stomach until next payday.

Student Debt: An Unfortunate Reality for Many Black Students via Dorean Pugh Jerard Paige, a junior economics major at Howard University, isn’t your typical college student. That’s because he not only is concerned about how much money he’ll owe when he graduates, he’s taking steps to eliminate his school debt and secure his financial future.

“I have been saving for the past six months, hoping to eliminate my student loan debt by graduation,” Paige said. “Once I pay off my debt I will look into investing in appreciating assets. But right now, my focus is on depleting my liabilities so I can spend money to make money.”

Many students, especially African Americans, aren’t in a position to pay off their school loans before they graduate. A new study by Prudential Financial, Inc. shows that college-educated African Americans are twice as likely to attain student loan debt compared to all collegeeducated Americans.

“Seventy three percent of collegeeducated African Americans feel ‘better off ’ compared to the previous generation of their family,” says Benjamin Robinson, chief administration officer for Prudential Annuities. “College-educated African Americans are much more likely than the general population to be among the first in their family to have attended college (15%), to hold a professional or white collar job (28%), or to hold a management position (18%). With less wealth in the previous generation of their families, African Americans may face the prospect of having to pay

a greater share of their own college expenses.”

Prudential found through its study, The African American Financial Experience, that African Americans are significantly more likely to have some type of debt (94%) compared to the general population (82%).

Credit card, student loan and personal debt are all higher within the African American community compared to the general population.

Getting out of debt is not an overnight process, says George R. Barnes, a financial advisor at Prudential. “Once students graduate from college they need to focus on getting a job and do whatever they can to keep expenses low to pay off debt sooner,” says Barnes. “There is no way to prevent student loan debt from growing because it is attached to interest rates. With credit cards, students have the ability to control their payment plans.”

In the study’s financial report card, African Americans gave themselves passing marks for knowing how to manage money, and even managing debt. But African Americans gave themselves low marks in financial literacy and building topics.

The African American Financial Experience is a biennial survey observing the financial progress and setbacks within the African American community. Prudential surveyed 1,153 Americans between the age of 25-70 who identify themselves as African American or black.

“The Original Football Classic”

Dr. Lopez D. Matthews, Jr. Contributor The “big game” at homecoming is traditionally the most anticipated athletic event of the year for the Howard community. During the heyday of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the Howard Bison’s original homecoming football rival was the Lincoln Lions of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. In fact, the two teams had been rivals since they first began playing each other in 1894. The modern classic football match was the brainchild of Dr. Emmet J. Scott, secretary-treasurer of Howard and Lincoln alumni Drs. Charles A. Lewis and Walter G. Alexander. The inaugural match was billed as a way to extend the excitement caused by the end of World War I; the first game was held on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1918.

With this first game, the teams began playing what would become one of the most exciting classics in black football. Former Howard football coach Ted Chambers described the game in his book, The History

of Athletics and Physical Education at Howard University, as “a major social event for the Thanksgiving weekend.” Alternating locations every year, when in Washington, D.C. the games were played at Griffith Stadium (now the location of the Howard University Hospital). The event attracted thousands of alumni and fans to both Philadelphia and Washington.

The “original football classic” proved so popular that the event attracted over 25,000 spectators.

As with any major event there were also parties and galas held surrounding the game. There was even a queen crowned for the event. The Afro-American Newspaper noted that when games were played in D.C., the nearby U Street corridor would take on the resemblance of

Mardi Gras in New Orleans on the day of the game.

Unfortunately, dwindling financial support for the football programs at both universities resulted in a string of losing seasons for both the Bison and the Lions. This caused a subsequent loss of enthusiasm for the classic as the two once dominate football programs resembled nothing more than a shell of their former selves. Despite its troubles, the classic continued until 1960 when Lincoln dismantled their football program.

Women’s Soccer Wins Fourth Straight With 1-0 Victory Over DSU Via hubison.com A late goal by freshman Jaelin Etierre White proved to be the difference as the Howard Women’s Soccer team won its fourth game in a row, defeating Delaware State University 1-0 on Tuesday evening at DSU’s Alumni Stadium.

The win was the first road win for HU in five attempts (1-3-1) and puts the team back at .500 for the first time since September 8 (2-2-1; win over RMU).

Howard Faces Familiar Homecoming Foe Nile Kendall Staff Writer Last week, Howard (2-5, 1-3 MEAC) spoiled the homecoming of conference rival Florida A&M with a 27-10 victory at Bragg Memorial Stadium. The Bison hope to hold off Morgan State (2-5, 2-1 MEAC) from accomplishing a similar goal as the Bears prepare for a Bison homecoming showdown at William H. Greene Stadium.

Freshman running back Anthony Philyaw sparked the Bison running attack with 121 yards rushing and two touchdowns against the Florida A&M defense just last week.

Philyaw, along with running back William Parker, will attempt to exploit Morgan State’s ninth ranked rushing defense come Saturday.

Parker has been the lead rusher for the Bison this year with 93 carries for 389 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Both teams faced off last year at Howard’s homecoming, and it came right down to the wire. The Bears drove 89 yards down the field for a touchdown, but on an extra point attempt that would have tied the game at 21, a bad snap lead to a turnover and ended the game in a 21-20 victory for the Bison.

Morgan State will attempt to dispose of last year’s memory when the team steps into Greene Stadium on Saturday. The Bears, who started off the season 0-5, have started to gain momentum with two straight wins over a team Howard has won and lost to this season in Florida A&M and North Carolina Central.

Morgan State, however, has a bit of a quarterback issue as the starting quarterback Seth Higgins went down with a shoulder injury in last week’s game against North Carolina Central. The Bears head coach

Donald Hill-Eley is unsure whether Higgins will be able to strap up for Saturday’s game, but is confident in the team’s backup quarterback Robert Council, who split time with Higgins under center last year.

Howard interim head coach Rayford Petty is not so much concerned with who will start at quarterback for the Bears, but is more focused on preparing for Morgan State’s entire offensive scheme.

“The system doesn’t change a lot as they change quarterbacks.

They continue to run basically the same plays with all of them.” Petty remarked. “We’re going with one game plan, and if we have to make an adjustment as we go, then that’s what we’ll do.”

The homecoming game will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m. in Greene Stadium.

Clear and Present Danger: Representative Thinking and Howard Carr’s Corner

the brand to Black thinkers who offer advice on the future of Howard from their safe perches, far from the hot battlefront of institutionalized Black education.

In a CNN interview on the movie 12 Years a Slave, I opined that this heavily-marketed media event might nudge some toward a deeper understanding of the lasting effects of enslavement on African America and the country at large. I re-read Solomon Northup’s narrative, reviewed Gordon Parks’ 1984 PBS film “Solomon Northup’s Odyssey,” and discussed all of this with students in my Black Aesthetics course.

Most of my most salient comments were left on CNN’s cutting room floor.

I’ve encouraged a bright Atlanta freshman who abandoned a desire to attend Barnard to come to Howard to develop that statement into a Hilltop essay. Late Tuesday night, convicted by a brilliant Homecoming Week public lecture by 16th President Sidney A. Ribeau on Howard’s intellectual genealogy and future promise, she explained what she meant by those words. I was struck by the clarity of her assessment of what we have and have not done to continue Howard’s mission.

Howard should be intellectually dangerous. When our name is associated with knowledge, ideas, vision, and social transformation, it should evoke astronomical expectations from both critics and supporters. Unreasonable hope from the oppressed and marginalized. Deep satisfaction from the vulnerable and misunderstood at the prospect of imminent intervention, for the greater social good, by a smart, committed, and incorruptible thinking force. Anything else is a betrayal of this institution’s mission and promise. As it stands, the “Howard Brand” is used too frequently as a place-marker, a proxy for these feelings to be leveraged by race pimps, from online education providers eager to market

Finally, I watched the new remake twice last week, participating in a panel with WHUT General Manager Jeff Lee and Georgetown’s Michael Eric Dyson at the second viewing. I was also the subject of a mildly-ballyhooed “Twitterstrafing” by the media personality Roland Martin in the wake of a minor argument at the first viewing (I called his declaration that he was a “free man” “absurd,” suggesting that he return to school to understand the premise of a question he had misunderstood by Howard student Sheneese Thompson during the Q&A session).

These experiences made me realize how badly I’ve misjudged the distance between how this movie (and general public discourses that evoke race) are being perceived and the level of critical discourse needed

to catalyze more honest, open, and deep understandings of how Black peoples experience, view, and engage in a still deeply-hostile, antiBlack world system. Howard is the staging platform for an institutionallevel exercise of the responsibility of HBCUs to lead such discourse and develop real solutions for masses of Black folk and others rather than bridges to material comfort for scattered islands of untroubled and untroubling citizens who “happen to be black.”

I am inclined to agree with the African-American film critic Armond White, who observes that the new movie reinforces deeply-ingrained ideas about Black victimhood and martyrdom that cripple nuanced and representative understandings of enslavement and its impact. No surprise, then, that it—like similarly two-dimensional films like Precious, The Help, and The Butler—would garner critical acclaim. Our artists have produced much more serious work on the subject, but even most in the Howard community have never seen Howard’s Haile Gerima’s powerful film Sankofa or other Black-made films that explore enslavement from the perspectives of African people who resisted it, such as Daughters of the Dust or Quilombo. This is an institutional failure and one of a litany of indictments that we must confront as we stand in the well of the court of responsibility to a community that sent us here to represent and help them with our best thinking, developed in the crucible of community learning and debate.

Howard University must nurture “dangerous minds,” thinkers whose combination of content-mastery and critical thinking restructures existing knowledge orders and socio-

economic arrangements. I listened to these types of minds during a bus trip to a Tuskegee Alabama student leadership conference last weekend with four dozen Howard students. After watching the segment of Henry Hampton’s Eyes on the Prize documentary devoted to the 1967 Howard student protests, these students held a wide-ranging discussion at 2 a.m. Monday morning on the bus. It reminded me of what had sparked me to go into the academy twenty-five years ago as a law clerk at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

We must be dangerously smart now.

We must eschew the pursuit of shiny objects of academic celebrity or the attention of indifferent (or even hostile-to-mission) corporate suitors and turn once again to the needs and ideas of the communities and students who fed and feed the imaginations of Ralph Bunche, Georgia Dunston, Sterling Brown, Lisa Crooms-Robinson, Jules Harrell, Cynthia Winston, and the many undeterred women and men of our faculty who have not mistaken the only reason they are relevant at this time, in this place.

Last week, Grambling State University’s football players acted dangerously. As Bill Rhoden noted in the New York Times, their actions could follow in the vein of earlier HBCU-led student movements directed at ending segregation and other racial injustices but this time spark a movement in collegiate athletics if others show courage. We shall see if the same can be said of those of us at Howard. Time—and dangerous effort and risk—will tell.
