By Dr. Keith Horinouchi, Director of the SDA Wellness Center The New Year at the Seventh-day Adventist Guam Clinic’s Wellness Center did indeed start off with a “New Beginning” or more specifically a new lifestyle program called, “Genesis — A New Beginning." With more than 15 years of providing lifestyle medicine services to the community of Guam and throughout Micronesia, the staff at the Wellness Center wanted to take these experiences and to develop a program that was fresh, local and met the needs of our community. Lots of hard work went into developing Genesis months prior to the launch in January of this year by our staff including Nutritionist and Dietitian Candy Sim RD, MPH, Wellness Coordinator, Bryan Donker, health education assistant Elvie Fujikawa and myself. The evidence in the medical literature and what we see all around us is that improving our lifestyle habits can effectively manage and reverse the most common health problems like diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease, gout, hypertension and much more. But as they say, “the proof is in the pudding," or to “fully test something you have to experience it." This is where the NEWSTART and other programs have been successful for the past decade, from the experiences of each and every one who had gone through our programs.
