DNA testing for Society sales DNA conditions of entry • All cattle entering Society sales (with the exception of calves at foot) require a DNA profile (sire or parentage) and the genetic defect test for hypotrichosis • All DNA results must be lodged with the Society prior to the sale date • Carriers of the genetic defect hypotrichosis will be ineligible for entry to the sale • All cattle must have a DNA sample lodged with the Society no later than close of entry* * Timetable for testing – The turnaround time to test a hair or tissue DNA sample is 21 working days from the date the sample is received at Hereford House and submitted to Weatherbys laboratory, Ireland.

Please also allow enough time to carry out retests if required.

If the sample does not produce a result, then the animal in question will not be permitted to enter the sale.

Quality samples are the key to getting good DNA from your cattle. Weatherbys will continue to accept hair samples but have highlighted that ear tissue samples have a higher success rate. At present the failure rate for hair samples is 5%-8% and 1% to 1.5% for ear notch samples.

Hair sampling for routine DNA testing Time and money can be saved by taking a good sample for parentage verification and genetic defects testing. Additional charges will be incurred if Weatherbys are unable to achieve a result due to the submitted hair samples not carrying sufficient roots/follicles, or being contaminated.

Tail hair root follicles are an excellent source of DNA for genomic and routine parentage testing, however, it is VITAL to observe the following instructions in order to avoid the inconvenience and cost of repeat samples: 1. It is essential that at least 60 tail hairs are pulled (NOT CUT). If the sample is missing the follicle (root), it will not contain DNA and if you don’t

have enough hairs, there will not be enough DNA for genotyping.

2. It is important that the hair is completely dry and as clean as possible, otherwise it will cause the DNA to degrade before extraction.

Gather 60 hairs and grasp them tightly as close to the skin as possible with hands or pliers. As an animal gets older the hairs become harder to remove so the use of pliers often aids in removal (please see overleaf ).

3. When more than one animal is to be sampled extreme care must be taken to avoid cross-contamination of hair roots from one animal to another.

4. Please ensure that the packet is labelled with the animal details etc.

Once you have placed the hair in the bag, seal it tightly ready for return, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Please only put one animal sample in each bag.

5. Semen samples: after thawing, place one straw of semen in the packet provided, seal and send immediately to the Hereford Cattle Society.

The performance of samples processed and the reliability of the genomic results are dependent upon sample quality.

Changes to cattle movements The new government funded programme, Livestock Information Programme (LIP), will replace the statutory information service BCMS in 2020. LIP is designed to improve flexibility, create a platform for world leading traceability and reduce costs to the government.

One major change for the bovine sector will be the introduction of compulsory electronic identification tags (EID) in 2020.

If members are not currently using EID tags, it is advisable not to purchase more than a year’s worth of tags in advance.

Chairman of council Following the resignation of Robin Irvine, the Society’s council unanimously elected vice-chairman Phillip Allman into the chair.

Important - new hypotrichosis ruling Your council has agreed the following new ruling, which will come into effect from 1 July 2020.

As of 1 July 2020 all calves born by a sire known to be a hypotrichosis carrier (HYC) must be tested for that condition. The cost of testing must be borne by the calf owner but registration fees will be refunded on calves found to be carriers if they are deregistered at the request of the breeder.

On 1 July 2021 all calves born by a sire known to be a HYC must be tested for that condition and if found to be carriers will not be eligible for registration. Any registration fees paid will be refunded but testing costs must be borne by the calf owner.

Matters arising from the November council meeting The secretary reported that a card payment facility is now available to members, thus offering a further way to make payments.

A password protected online forum has been set up to assist council members in discussions between council meetings.

UK Hereford Youth UKHY is organising a one day event at Honour Farm, St Michaels, Tenterden, Kent, home to David and Juliet Fenton and the Boresisle herd on Saturday 20 April.

The selection process for the UKHY travel bursary enabling a team of four UKHY members aged 18-30 to compete at the World Hereford Conference in

New Zealand is in the process of being confirmed and more details will follow soon.

A new section on the HCS website has been created to cover all aspects of UKHY.

Marketing The Society is to undergo a branding project, and will be developing a new logo, brand identity and website. This is an exciting time for the Society and we look forward to having a new identity.

New Society photographer It can be confirmed that the Society has appointed MacGregor Photography as its new official photographer, taking over from John Eveson. The photography firm will be present at all major events on behalf of the Society.

Shows and sales updates Council decided that £1,500 will be used as a bull buyer bonus at the Society’s spring and autumn shows and sales.

The top price bull will see £1,000 split equally between its buyer and vendor and £500 will be shared in the same way for the second highest priced bull.

Council agreed that during the veterinary inspection at Society shows and sales the official veterinary inspector will watch the bull walk out of the crush. This will be to detect significant lameness and is not an examination of correctness of movement. The judge and purchasers will make their own judgements of how correct a bull is in terms of movement.

It was agreed that the

Hereford Cattle Society would award £1,000 to the exhibitor of the overall supreme beef champion if by a registered pedigree Hereford sire at one of the following five major winter fairs and fatstock shows; RUAS NI Beef and Lamb Championships, English Winter Fair, Royal Welsh Winter Fair, Scottish Winter Fair and East of England Winter Stock Festival. Council agreed to add Agri Expo, Borderway Mart to the list of qualifying shows.

The prize money for this award will only be paid following a DNA of the winning animal to verify the identity of the sire. In the case of class entries, both pure-bred and crossbred, £50 will be awarded to the first three prize winners of each class if by a registered pedigree Hereford sire.

The National Hereford Stockjuding Competition will be held on Saturday 15 June at the Royal Three Counties Show and the arrangements will be as per last year.

Property update and fire audit The fire alarm system has been successfully installed in Hereford House and the process of fitting new fire doors throughout is still underway. These improvements will ensure Hereford House meets fire regulations and is more marketable to potential tenants.

Go ahead given on new carcase traits During the recent meeting of the breed development subcommittee at Hereford House, Alex Brown from AHDB presented the levy board’s new carcase traits which

have been developed from abattoir feedback and are designed to give information of economic significance to commercial beef producers.

These traits are now available on Breedplan and can be found when looking at an animal’s details and selecting ‘EBVs

Herefords hit Beef Expo once again The Hereford Cattle Society will once again host the breed stand and at the NBA Beef Expo, to be held at North West Auctions, Kendal on Thursday 23 May.

This year, the Expo farm tours will take place the day before on 22 May, one of which will be at the home of Netherhall Herefords, run by the Kelly family.

This is a great opportunity to promote the benefits of the breed which we all know so well. There will be a hot beef lunch available during the visit.

Cattle for the breed stand are being kindly organised by the North of England Hereford Breeders’ Association. We would urge members to make every effort to support the breed through attending the show which brings together the very best in British

commercial and pedigree cattle, equipment, ground-breaking developments, and show classes for everyone involved in the industry.

The Expo is considered a major showcase for beef breed societies who want to promote the quality of their pedigree and commercial cattle.

Sponsorship at winter fairs The Hereford Cattle Society will award £1,000 to the exhibitor of the overall supreme beef champion if by a registered pedigree Hereford sire at the following shows: English Winter Fair, Royal Welsh Agricultural Winter Fair, Scottish Winter Fair, East of England Winter Stock Festival, RUAS Premier Beef and Lamb Championships and Agri Expo, Borderway Mart.

Calf management letter 1 July 2019 – 30 June 2020 Letter ‘T’ Letter T should be used in respect of calves born on or between 1 July 2019 – 30 June 2020.

Online registrations There has been a great increase in the number of registrations now being submitted online.

Members will find instructions within this newsletter on using the online programme and those who adopt this method will make a saving of £5.78 per calf registered.

Transfers Please note that in the event of a request being received from a buyer to transfer an animal into their name, so long as the request is accompanied by the Society’s official pedigree warranty certificate, the transfer will be processed.

Any breeder selling stock that they do not wish to transfer should ensure the buyer is made aware at the point of sale and the pedigree warranty certificate forwarded to the office for cancellation.

Semen exports Would members please note that most countries to which semen is exported insist that the donor bull is DNA parentage verified not just sire verified.

Therefore, should you have semen in storage that is eligible for export, please ensure the dam of the donor bull has been DNA profiled.

EBV accuracy and data submission At the February breed development sub-committee meeting it was agreed that there was a serious need to address the subject of the accuracy of EBVs. The best way of doing so is to ensure that all data is recorded on a regular basis. This includes birth weights, calving codes, 200 day weights, 400 day weights and 600 day weights, and if the herd is of a sufficient size to create effective contemporary comparison groups.

Scanning In regards to EBV accuracy, if raw animal data is recorded, ABRI says: “If the animal’s measurement can be compared in an ‘effective’ group, the accuracy will be increased.

“As a guide, it is suggested the calving ease accuracy would increase by 4% to 6% whereas birth weight accuracy would increase by 10% to 15% if the animal is measured for the relevant trait”.

This therefore highlights the importance of regularly submitting performance data at every opportunity, thereby increasing the accuracy of the EBVs reported.

Travel bursary The World Hereford Conference is being held in New Zealand in 2020 and UKHY has been invited to participate in the youth section.

Entrants must be aged 18 to 30 and a team of four will be selected over the course of the next few months. Not only is it a great opportunity to participate in an international event representing the country, but there will be the option of tours, stud visits and experiencing the ‘kiwi’ way of life.

Any young member interested must be: • Aged 18 to 30 • A paid-up UKHY member • Be keen to learn and have a sense of professionalism Council is offering each of the four successful applicants a bursary of £1,500 to travel and compete at the Conference.

Over the next few months council will be formulating a selection process and details will be distributed to all eligible members.

There will be a series of events during 2019 including workshops and interviews to select the most competitive team.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate: • The confidence and maturity to be a good ambassador for UK Herefords • Understanding of the Hereford strengths and characteristics (the brand values)

• Understanding of livestock husbandry • Competence in handling and show presentation • Understanding of breeding programmes, tailored to the supply chain and market requirements • Commitment and involvement to UK Hereford Youth • The ability/potential to disseminate and apply the messages from New Zealand in their own herds (or those of which they are associated) and to communicate to the wider membership Once selected, there will be further targeted training and assistance to fully prepare the candidates. UKHY will also be looking for sponsorship and lots of support for any fundraising activities.

Take 5 with….Jackie Cooper Jackie has been secretary of the NEHBA for the past decade and runs the Rimini herd near Preston.

What area does NEHBA cover?

Our area is the North of England Hereford Breeders’ Association.

We cover the Cheshire counties moving across to Greater Manchester, all the Yorkshire counties and up to the Scottish borders.

We also cover the Isle of Man, where we have members.

What is your association with the breed?

My parents, Bernard and Barbara Rimmer, began breeding Herefords 40 years ago when I was two years old. After keeping commercial sucklers

and recognising the docility of the Hereford crosses among these, they decided to go in to pedigree production.

Under the guidance of Frank Clayton of the Pendleside herd, they bought their first maiden heifers in 1979, starting the Barbern herd. In 1999 my own voyage into the Hereford world began, when I was given a Foxglove heifer for my 20th birthday. I then started the herd Rimini Herefords.

I have never been in a position to breed with more than six cows due to lack of available ground although we recently purchased a derelict farm where we already housed the cattle and now have potential to improve our facilities.

Tell us a little bit about NEHBA. The NEHBA has a tremendous following with in excess of 60 active members. We see a range of members attending events and meetings. We have active members from the ages of seven to those

well into their 80s. Each February we hold our AGM and welcome up to 50 members who have their say in the running of the NEHBA and aspects of the Society as a whole. Many of our discussions surround sales and showing and enhancing the breed whenever we can.

We have a brilliant committee, who work tirelessly to ensure we promote the Hereford at all opportunities.

Our two council members keep us up-to-date with matters that are relevant to our members and likewise take discussions back to council on behalf of the membership.

We attempt to have at least one herd visit per year, which is great to swap skills and breeding tips with our hosts, as well as having a great social event.

Our presentation day is usually held around autumn time, which sees the silverware for the winners over the show season and herd competitions.

We encourage any new exhibitors with a ‘showring newcomer’ trophy, which is a nice touch and there are also the usual awards for best bull or female, reserve placings and exhibitorbred categories. If we have run the biennial herd competition we will also present those prizes.

We also have a trainee judges’ scheme which is quite unique to our area association.

What has been your best moment as secretary?

Definitely winning the Thomas Duckham award two years ago. I think our members deserved the recognition for what we do for the breed.

I think the NEHBA has been outstanding in contributing to the promotion of the Hereford in our area. I think council were given an insight into what role we actually play

in the North of England and we have been able to put ourselves on the map, which has made me very proud.

What are you looking forward to this year on the Hereford calendar and why?

There are many things I am looking forward to in 2019. We have a great spread of exciting events organised in the North. In May we hope to kick off with a Female Flyer sale at Carlisle Mart, which is set to attract breeders from across the country.

Likewise, we encourage anyone looking to buy, to come and have a look at the fantastic females on offer.

I am particularly excited about the two events at Netherhall in Kendal.

David and Maggie Kelly are hosting the Beef Expo farm tour and the Society open day in June. The two events will differ but give a great insight into our NEHBA overall herd winner 2018. There will be other workshops on the day, so get yourselves there to have a great day out.

Beef Expo is to take place in our area yet again and we are looking to provide cattle for the stand, as well as helping to man it. Events such as this are important when marketing the Hereford.

Paying accounts by BACS A number of members have chosen to pay their accounts by BACS. BACS is ideal for making regular automated payments, reducing costs of administration and improving financial control while removing the need to write cheques which can be costly and is often subject to human error.

Make use of the online registration system Members are encouraged to make use of the online registration facility available on the Society’s website under the heading ‘members only’.

To access this facility for the first time you will need to contact the office to obtain an ‘access code’.

Once you have entered online you will be requested to create your own password for future access. You will find a number of facilities available to you as a member of the Society which are all fully explained.

Once logged onto the file you will have the ability to submit calf notifications/ registrations online and the basic instructions to do so are: • Click on the link that says ‘online transactions’.

• Then click on ‘create a new batch’.

• Then select the appropriate batch type (calf registration/notification).

At this stage recording members can also choose an option to submit their performance data.

• When the batch has been created you will need to click on the ‘add button’ to record/register each animal that is included in the batch.

• Once created additional animals and information can be added/changed until you submit the batch to the Society. The batch will remain in a holding file until you submit it.

• Please remember that, having created a batch, it must be submitted to the Society within 27 days of the oldest calf on the file otherwise late fees will automatically be imposed.

• The information available to you includes the sire and dam of each calf, details of which can be accessed by either – (A) Selecting the animal from a drop down list, or (B) Manually entering the identity number (tag no.) of the animal.

The drop down list of sires will include all those you have used in the last two years.

The list of dams will consist of active cows currently in your ownership, together with breeding age heifers.

Remember to click ‘submit’ when entering registrations online Members using the online facility to register their calves are asked to note that they MUST click ‘SUBMIT’ before signing off.

If this is not done the data does not come through to the Society for processing, therefore running the risk of late fees being imposed.
