t IMPRESSIVE ACHIEVEMENT FOR OUR TOP MATHEMATICIANS The UKMT Regional Final, sponsored by Rolls Royce, was held at Kingston University on Friday 2nd of November 2018.

T

his year the Heathland School came an impressive 4th in the UK MTT regional Maths competition. Thirteen regional school teams across West London competed: a mixture of state and private schools. Four of the schools top mathematicians from Year 12 and 13 took part in the competition and their underlying confidence in their abilities can be attributed to this year’s success. The UKMT Team Challenges promote mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication skills. They also give pupils the opportunity to compete against pupils from other schools in their region. The students entered the competition to support their university applications and to test their mental mathematical skills against some of the brightest mathematicians in the surrounding area, often supported by additional coaching and resources. For the purposes of fair play, teachers were assigned to teams that were not from their school. Comments from these teachers portrayed the Heathland school maths team as very polite with a great attitude. Fine ambassadors for the school and an impressive achievement.

ETON SUMMER SCHOOL Every year some of our students attend the prestigious Eton College Summer School. This Borough wide opportunity is very competitive but year-on-year the school produces a high ratio of applications to places. Jigasaya was one of last year’s attendees. ‘Attending the Eton College Summer School to study Biology and Chemistry not only allowed me to learn about my favourite subjects in further depth, but also gave me numerous amazing opportunities like carrying out a rat dissection. As well as that, the advice given in support of university applications was invaluable. But the best thing about those 10 days was meeting some of my best friends today, and the immeasurable amount of fun we had together.’ Jigyasa Anand 13GR

HIGHER EDUCATION DAY The Summer Term means Higher Education day for Year 12’s. An event which prepares students for one of the biggest decisions in their life: which course, which University? The day is packed with information from University ambassadors, visiting speakers and former pupils (Heathland Alumni) who come back to the school to share their wisdom and experience on the daunting but exciting decision making process.

OPPORTUNITIES WEEK

TOP APPRENTICESHIP WITH JP MORGAN FOR NIKITA Nikita considered University but was keen to enter the world of work as soon as possible. After seeing the opportunity at JP Morgan she realised she could have both. With support from the school, Nikita is now embarking on an exciting career with one of the premier financial institutions in the United Kingdom.

Nikita Williams secured a Degree Apprenticeship with JP Morgan in partnership with the University of Exeter.

RAJVEER ON THE PRESTIGIOUS SKY FAST FORWARD PROGRAM

A

t the end of the summer term, Year 12 students participated in ‘opportunities week.’ A week set aside for students to undertake work experience, volunteering or enrichment activities based on their chosen subject for university. Bisma and Aaisha volunteered at Ashgrove Care Home on the Staines Road in Hounslow. Bisma writes, ‘I volunteered at Ashgrove Care Home for a week and during my time there I developed my communication skills, responsibility and most importantly patience. Many of the people I worked with suffered from dementia and other mental

illnesses. Initially the residents were quite reserved however, due to my regular visits, they became familiar with me and started to engage in conversations. During the week I was exposed to many situations I wouldn’t have experienced in dayto-day life which helped me develop my interpersonal skills. Towards the end of the week the residents had become very comfortable with me and would look forward to my visit. This made me realise that I had a passion for helping people and communicating with the vulnerable, offering them support and comfort.’ Bisma Noor 13TU

THE HEATHLAND SCHOOL ALUMNI: FORMER STUDENTS RETURN AND PASS ON THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Hassan Butt, PwC Senior Associate

The school maintains its links with alumni and over 500 students are regularly informed of the schools news and student progress. Former students come back into the school to give talks with the aim to inspire and offer advice on the different career paths and opportunities available, such as degree choices, apprenticeships and what the world of work is like. Recently Alavari Jeevathol and Hassan Butt graciously gave up their time to come into the school and spoke to our students about their career journey since leaving the school Alavari left The Heathland School with A grades in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and French. He now works in a multidisciplinary project management company working with artificial intelligence. Hassan Butt left with A levels in Maths, Religious Education and IT and is now a Senior Associate for the accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCooper. His talk outlined the amazing opportunities available for our students in their graduate and apprenticeship programs.

t BOSNIA CHALLENGE 2018 The Bosnia Challenge is a unique experience which has been experienced by Heathland’s Year 12 students for the past 10 years. It is a leadership experience, which has two main components: fundraising for a charity in Mostar, Bosnia called Our Kids Foundation (OFK); and a trip to Mostar in the summer to support the work of the charity. OFK is a remarkable charity which supports the growth and development of children in institutional care in Mostar. It also funds and operates two halfway houses, one for girls and one for boys. These houses, which have full time staff, provide accommodation and assistance to young adults when they leave the orphanage at the age of 18 and need support to develop their independent living skills. Each Heathland student that participates in The Bosnia Challenge has to raise £1000 throughout the school year. Activities in – and out – of school help students to achieve their target. The week spent in Mostar is jam-packed with fun activities such as games, excursions, swimming, bowling, white water rafting and experiencing the beautiful forests and beaches of Bosnia. It can be difficult to put into words, but this experience has a profound impact on the life of each child, student, and teacher who participated in The Bosnia Challenge. Many special bonds were formed throughout trip and memories were made to last a lifetime. 5 | Heathland Sixth Form Highlights | 2017 – 2018

GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO SWANAGE Year 12 Geography students embarked on a field trip to Swanage, Dorset in South West England. The purpose of the trip was to investigate physical and human processes. Some students looked at how coastal processes affected the landscape while others looked at the process of regeneration in the town of Boscombe, Bournemouth. Lots of geographical skills were on show, from measuring erosion with ranging poles to using GIS to map the local area. Students had a really enjoyable time and were able to explore the coastal environment with lots of sunshine!

UK PARLIAMENT WEEK UK Parliament Week is an annual festival that engages people from across the UK with Parliament, explores what it means to them and empowers them to get involved. For our students it highlights the importance of engaging in the political debate and understanding how this affects every aspect of their futures. A big part of Parliament Week this year has been the fact that it is 100 years since some women and all men were given the right to vote. At The Heathland School, the Sixth Form Politics students marked the week with a series of competitions and events. There was a creative writing and poster competition based on Vote 100, a ‘Teacher MP Hunt’ where students had to find the teachers with MP stickers on their staff badges and solve the mystery word

to win a prize, a quiz in tutorial and some short videos made by the sixth formers about what Parliament does. Some Politics students also put together and delivered an assembly to the Sixth Form about the Representation of the Peoples Act in 1918 and how it changed the lives of working men and women. Our Politics students are now looking forward to their visit to Parliament in the New Year!

ROHAN’S ENGINEERING WORK EXPERIENCE WITH BRITISH AIRWAYS ‘I’ve always been advised that getting some work experience is really important, particularly if you want to study Engineering at University, so I was glad when I secured a week of work experience with British Airways. It was fascinating looking inside the aircraft engines and learning how

the mechanics work in combination with the rest of the plane. I was able to do some walk-throughs of a few planes, including the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, which I had never been on before. A particular highlight was sitting in the cockpit and pretending I was a pilot! The week was a brilliant

opportunity to see how Maths and Physics goes beyond the classroom and into industry. It has definitely reaffirmed my interest to study engineering at University and I recommend it to anyone thinking of pursuing the subject or who shares an interest in aviation.’ Rohan Mangat 13BA

Museum, the United Nations building, sightseeing in Geneva and taking a wonderful boat trip on Lake Geneva.

BP ENGINEERING EDUCATION SCHEME ‘On the 19th of October 2018, we attended an introductory session of the BP Engineering Education Scheme, a sixth-month long course where we plan new and interesting solutions to current problems. Fuelled by our passion for the environment, we decided on working on methods that can be used to make energy extraction more efficient. The scheme is

prestigious, challenging and most importantly fascinating chance for hopeful engineers or physicists to apply skills to a modern-day situation. With help from two mentors who work in industry as well as a vast array of ideas, we hope to develop a unique solution to optimise fossil fuel extraction.’ Siddhi Barhanpurkar 12KE
