Oxbridge Offers for Ambitious A-Level Students

he School was delighted to hear that three sixth formers have received offers from Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Viola Han-Smith (13Sh) has an offer to read

Classics at Oxford University; Chandan Dhiman (13Ho), for Human, Social and Political Science at Cambridge University; Esha Marwaha (13Ke), an offer for Geography at

Cambridge University.

Headmaster Mr Pattar said “they fully deserve this opportunity for their exceptional all round commitment, both to study and to school life”.

The girls themselves also give credit to the support that they have received from teachers, their families and their primary schools.

Chandan and Viola attended Hounslow Heath Junior School.

Esha attended Ashton House.

ednesday afternoon saw Year 11, as well as their teachers and parents gather together in the main hall to celebrate their achievements since arriving at the school in 2010. Students were delighted to welcome Bonita Norris as their guest of honour. Bonita was the youngest British female to climb Everest, and spoke to students about hard work and perseverance. Head of Year Miss Legg told her year group that she was “confident that with your determination, motivation to succeed and positive attitude we will be breaking the school records”.

Winners of the Enterprise Charity Week Competition For Charity Week, Year 8 and Year 10 were set an Enterprise project.

Each Tutor Group had to set up a company and divide tasks within our tutor group to increase our efficiency. In order to ensure that we won the Year 10 competition, we cooperated with one another and took everyone’s ideas into consideration. Working as a team allowed us to achieve the best ideas, tactics and ways to resolve problems.

Year 9 Careers Day

T

o tie in with the Southbank’s WOW Fest and International Women’s Day, Sixth Fomers organised a events and activities to celebrate the achievements of women and girls around the world. The day also aimed to consider and debate how we, as a school, can move towards gender equality. A range of activities were planned, such as speed-mentoring, film screenings, workshops during PSHE lessons.

School Council Report

Right: Thanraj Virdee (9Tu) and Samuel Kendall (10Ho) speak to Mercedes-Benz representative, Reece Smart In preparation for choosing their GCSEs later in the term, the school careers service organised a day for a variety of industries to visit the school and explain how best to set their aspirations.

Companies attending included the Government Departments, BP and a number of charities. Some successful Heathland Alumni returned to give career advice, including financial planners, social workers, and Reece Smart (pictured above), who is now working for Mercedes-Benz.

Dr Arani Nitkunan, former Heathlander and now a Consultant Neurologist at St George’s Hospital in Croydon, came into school to offer advice about medical applications to Year 12 students. Arani and her twin sister Tharani left Heathland in 1993 and both went on to qualify as doctors.

Arani emphasised the vital importance of reading all around the subject of medicine and getting quality work experience.

Firstly, I’m delighted to say that Charity Week was our most successful ever, raising a

grand sum of £14,835. Events throughout the school day really got the whole school involved.

Backstage we have been busy asking the Headmaster your questions. These ranged from promoting greater consistency in Attitude to learning Grades, to keeping the school grounds clear of deceased birds, and have been very helpful for improving student welfare. We urge you all to keep your ideas coming in. It really does help.

Composers’ Workshop with Richmond

Just the idea of orchestrating is a challenge that some of the greatest musicians find daunting, so having it played and analysed by the amazing musicians of Richmond Orchestra was a terrifying idea. Known for being thorough in their work, the musicians spent time going through the composer’s intentions before playing them through. It was breathtaking and inspiring to see our own pieces played, and was incredibly beneficial to our composing skills. Thanks to Mr Hunter for giving us an opportunity that most young composers could only wish for.

Gala Concert

Year 7 Give Lessons on History of Hounslow

I Gala Concert was another packed affair this year, commended by audience members for featuring such a variety of acts from a variety of years throughout the school. Every student in Year 7 contributed to a choir piece, contrasting with aspirational sixth form highlights. Such musical talent on display bodes well for the Performing Arts department’s production of Oliver this term.

n February, Gifted and Talented Year 7 students were invited to a combined English, RE, History and Geography challenge. We were given a decade and had to create an interactive map. We had to include at least four aspects of life in Hounslow at the time, so we got stuck into local research before presenting our findings to the other groups. Overall it was a challenging and enjoyable experience.

TEDX Presentation A group of Year 12 students have been asked to create an inspirational and innovative TEDX talk. After many debates and ‘think’ sessions and some advice from Mr. Couch, we decided on the topic of space exploration. Although there is some work left the team are on their way to a heart-warming script.

Paris Trip

BTEC Theatre In January, BTEC Drama students staged their exam piece ‘Poppies in the Dark’ to a public audience. They were required to organise all aspects of the performance down to writing the script and building the set. Focusing on the individual, students produced a moving tribute to World War I.

Maths Challenge

Being one of the best areas to develop photography skills, France hosts amazing art galleries in which pupils were able to encounter their artistic capabilities, such as the Louvre and Pompidou. In our opinion the trip was matchless. We hope to see more Art and Photography trips giving us foresight for how we can achieve our artistic ambitions and grades.

Y11 Honours: At the beginning of February, Sixth Form Art and Photography students headed to London to visit the National Portrait and the Courtauld Galleries. In order to inspire and prepare them for their exam work, they took in the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize as well as work by Greyson Perry and the galleries’ permanent collections.

Y7 and Y8 Spanish top set Onatti Theatre Performance “Fuerta” was about a girl who liked a young man named Fernando, but is prevented from meeting him by the funny tricks played by her brother Oscar. This included changing the time of her clock. she had to rush to the cinema badly dressed and came home depressed. This all Kavi Noonan (8Ad) gets into character comes back to Oscar, which had us all in stitches. I would like to thank the actors and MFL department for a really entertaining experience.

STEM Week STEM Week was another all-round success this year. Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics were promoted to students through main hall and classroom events, new extra-curricular clubs and a welcome return from the Zoo Bus. Student feedback has been exceptionally warming, many noting that they are already looking forward to next year’s events.

National Space Centre

Astrophysics Lecture

L-R Back L-R: Divya Hansora, Navdeep Flora, Priyanka Nimmala, Apurba Biswas Front: Thushra Perera, Roshan Hansla, Kulveer Pal, Ashish Singh Year 12 and 13 students attended a masterclass at the Space Academy this term, involving astronomy activities such as measuring the trajectory of full-size rockets. They were also

challenged when set tasks to discuss how Newton’s law of motion applies in hovercrafts. Students performed extremely well, gearing up both for A-Level and higher education study.

S

ixth form Physics students’ most recent visit to UCL was for a lecture by Sir Lord Martin Rees entitled ‘The next 25 years in Astronomy’. The enticing lecture gave students lots of practise in note taking, and gave students a really forward thinking look at the future of the science.

Model Volcano Competition This competition for Year 9 students saw a number of remarkable entries. The standard was set incredibly high, and it was difficult to choose winners, which are now on display in 153B. Leaving them dormant was never the students’ intention however. As you can see, they were brought outside, and eruptions created using diet coke and mentos.

The Globe Theatre Trip The English department took all pupils in Year 7 to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre last week. Students were bowled over when they entered the performance space and able to question some of the actors about its history. Afterwards they took part in a professional drama workshop using A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Look out for letters to see a play their next term.

Psychology Trip to London Zoo Earlier this month, 50 AS Psychology Students visited London Zoo to take part in some academic workshops.

These taught them about phobias, and involved guided hypnotherapy sessions and even holding a tarantula.

Students were also given the opportunity to explore the other animals at the zoo and the beautiful Regents Park itself.

Professional Poet Visit

St Paul Girls School French Visit

Covering topics such as religion, the EU and stem cell research, Year 12 and 13 French students attended a debating competition at St Paul’s Girls School. Students saw the competitors deliver their arguments in French, helping them to develop our own listening skills and immerse themselves in French for the evening. Some are looking to take part next year.

25 A Level English students were lucky enough to be given a workshop by South London poet Bridget Minamore (inset right), whose poems include ‘Breaking News’ and ‘London’.

Minamore spoke in the staffroom afterwards about the ideas students came up with for poetry, after a fascinating discussion on the concept of ‘home’.

Y7 Boys Hockey Debut The Year 7 boys hockey team attended their first competitive matches last week. The tournament at Guru Nanak School saw all members of the team perform well. A special mention must also go to Amr Hussain for donning the Goalkeeping kit and saving a number of goals.

A2 Rugby Trip

A2 PE students were given all-access privileges to Twickenham Stadium this term, visiting the pitch side and VIP areas of the magnificent arena. The boys were given a seminar on the historical development of Rugby, in which they greatly impressed the seminar speaker. This certainly bodes well for their exams.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award

We had our first DofE Expedition this term at Box Hill. The day was spent learning new things and socialising in the countryside. With a bit of guidance, we were able to complete the course quickly without anybody being too tired. Despite the early start, we enjoyed it and had a lot of fun overall.

Just last week 30 Year 12 students completed their first practice expedition weekend at Box Hill.

With plenty of hills to climb, gourmet food cooked on the trangias, and plenty of wet to be had, the students will be hoping for some sun on our next adventure at Henley in June.
