Pag-asa

by COWE OMAR BENITO

Mount Kanlaon: The Mount Kanlaon: The Majestic Volcano of Majestic Volcano of Negros Negros
by
N
landmarks, natural and man-made Countless waterfalls and scenic views can be found here, but one stands out as the most magnificent yet the most dangerous Mt Kanlaon is volcano standing at 2,645 meters (8,086 feet) above sea level, it can be seen from afar often with ash clouds at the top It is not only the tallest peak in the Visayan Islands but also one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines Its name comes from “Kan Laon”, an ancient deity worshipped by the indigenous people of Negros
Apart from its mythological origins, Mt Kanlaon also contributes to the ecosystem and tourism Situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, it is a reminder of nature’s power and unpredictability Despite of the risks, many tourists, hikers, scientists and nature lovers continue to visit, attracted by its beauty and exciting trails
Mt Kanlaon is a protected natural park full of diverse species of plants and animals Many endangered species of animals call this volcano home including the Visayan spotted deer, the Visayan warty pig, and the Negros bleedingheart pigeon Over 100 species of birds can be seen flying through the trees, making it a haven for Birdwatchers Its diverse ecosystem ranges from the dipterocarp forests to the mossy forests and alpine meadows near the summit Rare plants such as the rafflesia, pitcher plants, and the wild orchids thrive in its abundant environment, further securing its status as an ecological treasure

The soil near the volcano is rich in minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium, making it fertile Because of this, the agriculture around the volcano thrives and the increase in the amount of water the soil can hold allows for sustainable irrigation Mt Kanlaon also supplies fresh water to rivers, plants and nearby towns through volcanic aquifers: underground water reservoirs formed by volcanic activity
While it provides fertile soil and natural resources, it also poses as a threat to the surround towns and its inhabitants Being one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, Mt Kanlaon has erupted more than 30 times since the 1800s Most of them were phreatic (steam-driven) explosions which can suddenly occur without any warning According to PHILVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) the first recorded eruption was on 1866 and recently on December 9, 2024 It frequently produces earthquakes, ash clouds and gas emissions With ashfall destroying crops and earthquakes demolishing roads and buildings, it greatly affects the lives of the citizens living in nearby towns and municipalities
Living near the volcano comes with health risks The Volcanic activities can cause skin and eye irritation, respiratory problems, stress and anxiety The local governments have prepared evacuation plans and conduct disaster drills, ensuring the residents’ safety PHIVOLCS and NDRRMC (National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council) are
organizations that monitor the volcano and warn communities of any potential danger that may occur During eruptions, families living in high-risk areas are forced to leave their homes and evacuate to the nearest evacuation center These temporary shelters provide food and protection for those who are affected After an eruption, families struggle to rebuild and recover their homes and belongings Farmers lose their crops and are forced to sell their livestock at a very low price, and people who are in the tourism industry could lose their source of income The government’s aid helps but it could take months or even years to fully recover
Mt Kanlaon is more than just a volcano–it is a living ecosystem and a natural force While it is dangerous, it is also a source of biodiversity and resources Whether you are a researcher, a scientist, or just a nature lover, visiting Mt Kanlaon is an unforgettable experience However we must remember to be responsible, protecting and respecting this majestic volcano ensures that its beauty will continue to shine for future generations
