‘Temporary change in leadership’ at school

Parents were given the bombshell news last Friday that head teacher Kevin McClory would not be in charge for the new term.

Scottish Borders Council sent a text message via its group-call system which said John Clarke, the current head at Berwickshire High School, would be temporarily leading the school from Monday [August 15].

SBC is remaining tightlipped over what it describes as a “temporary change in leadership” and did not respond when we asked how long this “temporary” arrangement would be in place.

Mr McClory has been head of the Buccleuch Road school for just over two-and-a half years.

A spokesperson for SBC told The Hawick Paper: “A temporary change in leadership at Hawick High took effect from Monday, August 15.

“The current head teacher at Berwickshire High School, John Clarke, will lead Hawick High School for a short period of time.

“He will be supported by the existing depute head teachers, Alison Ratcliffe and Peter Beaton, along with the current depute head teacher at Galashiels Academy, Pauline Anderson.”

Asked why Mr McClory was unable to resume his duties at the school following the summer break, the council spokesperson would only say: “We are unable to comment on individual staffing issues.”

Mr McClory, 43, a native of Stranraer, was depute head teacher of St Kentigern’s Academy, a Roman Catholic comprehensive in Blackburn, West Lothian, before being appointed head at Hawick High.

The Hawick Paper was unable to contact him for a comment.

3 Date for new bus shelters

The bus shelters in Weensland Road and on the A7 near the Guthrie Drive junction are to be replaced following damage caused by road traffic collisions. A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: “They are currently being manufactured and it is expected that they will be installed in early October.”

McLeod airs bin concerns

Children enjoy ‘Polar Explorer’ fun

Community councillor Greg McLeod told last week’s meeting that he was concerned about the frequency with which the dog waste bin in Douglas Haig Court was being emptied. He said: “I think we should make sure it’s being done regularly as poo bags are piling up around it.” Councillor Davie Paterson said he would check to see if it needed emptying.

Around 50 local children recently took part in Teviot church’s annual holiday club, which for the last 14 years has kept youngsters entertained during the final week of their summer break. The activities were based around the Scripture Union’s ‘Polar Explorer’ theme, and saw primary-aged children enjoying crafts, drama, games and a theme song as part of a fun week. A church spokesperson told The Hawick Paper: “We have children due to start high school who have been coming to us their whole school life which is really nice. They learn but they have great fun at the same time.”

Plea for hats and shoes

£90,000 road repairs to start The £90,000 resurfacing of Burnfoot Road is set to get under way next week.

The major works programme follows several site visits by Councillors Stuart Marshall and Watson McAteer, both Hawick and Denholm, and Scottish Borders Council officials.

First Minister’s £53,000 to help plug attainment gap

Burnfoot Community School started the new term with a bang this week with a visit

by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon who confirmed pupils were set to reap the benefits of £53,000 in funding.

The cash – which is part of the Scottish Government’s £750million bid to improve attainment – has already been put to good use at Burnfoot.

Burnfoot head teacher Janice Chapman explained: “Our focus in year one has been looking at early years and reading, and as we go into year two we’re going to be looking at listening and talking. We need to improve literacy learning right across the school.

“We’ve also done a lot of staff development work, and the funding has enabled us to do training with staff. It’s also enabled us to employ some additional staff.”

To qualify for the funding, the school has to submit a plan which has to be

approved by the Scottish Government.

“It has to meet the criteria of the challenge which is about literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing,” added Mrs Chapman The First Minister, who was met at the school gates by Carnival Queen Rachel Lowrie and Carnival Cornet Terry

“At schools in areas of

deprivation, teachers are already developing innovative approaches to improving literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing.

“At Burnfoot, for example, there has been a significant focus on family support, family learning programmes and links with the wider community.”

Aldi deal for new local store ‘complete’ Supermarket giant Aldi’s bid to build a new supermarket in Commercial Road has been rubber-stamped following the completion of a “legal agreement”.

The firm’s application for a new store in Hawick was approved on appeal by the Local Review Body earlier this year, subject to the completion of a legal agreement to secure a financial contribution towards enhanced signage and pedestrian links to the town centre and shop front improvements.

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: “The legal agreement has now been completed and the planning permission was issued on Friday, August 12.”

Councillor Watson McAteer said: “A recent retail survey indicated that edge-of-centre retail developments were important for Borders towns enticing shoppers from across the entire area. I am confident Aldi will complement existing businesses and regenerate an area in longterm decline.”

Councillors will be ‘great miss’ Tributes have been paid to two stalwarts who have stepped down from the community council.

Helen Ford and Drew O’Mara have given combined service of more than 25 years, and they will be sorely missed, said chair Marion Short.

Helen, who has been on the community council for nearly 20 years, is bowing out due to ill health. “I’ve decided it’s time to give up,” she told The Hawick Paper.

“I’ll miss it but I might get involved with the WRI again

as I stopped that many years ago.”

The 74-year-old, of Slitrig Crescent, said she had seen so many changes and learnt such a lot. She added: “Someone once asked me what they would get out of it if they joined, and I said you get nothing at all, you do it for the love of Hawick.”

Over the years, Helen has been on the Hawick in Bloom and the Hawick Summer Festival committees, sold countless raffle tickets and helped out wherever she could.

Community council chair Marion Short said Helen was a “local icon” and added: “Nothing was ever a bother and she will be a great miss.”

Also departing after around six years as a member and latterly the treasurer is former Scott and Charters factory manager Drew O’Mara.

Drew, also 74, said he had come to the natural end of his tenure – although he knew it was time to stand down after the recent vandal attacks on planters and flowers tended to by the bloom volunteers.

The Hazelwood Court resident said: “I just felt that I have done my stint, but I have also been very disappointed by those who vandalised the flowers – it was souldestroying.”

But he added: “I’ve enjoyed my time.”

Mrs Short said of the former treasurer: “I am vexed that Drew left as he has given such a lot of service and his work was exemplerary, but he has reached a time when it was right to stop.

“He will be a great miss, too.”

Let’s flock to flood exhibition

It’s “crunch time” next week as Hawick plays host to a public exhibition on plans for the town’s multi-million pound flood prevention scheme.

Teries are being urged to attend what is the second event of its kind – following on from the first display in January – which aims to outline plans for the project which is scheduled to be completed in 2022 at an estimated cost of £36.4million. And this time, feedback from the two-day exhibition will help shape the face of the town for ever.

Stuart Marshall, chairman of the Volunteer Flood Group and also a councillor for the Hawick and Denholm ward, told The Hawick Paper: “I call on all townsfolk to drop in and see first hand the plans for our flood protection scheme.

“Never before has consultation with both the public and the business sector been of such importance

regarding this massive project.” The scheme is the Scottish Borders Council project team’s proposal on the best combination of options to protect Hawick against a major flood, deemed a onein-75-year event, which will protect 915 properties.

The plans include raising the wall at the high school, flood-proofing the Orrock Halls and Sonia’s Bistro, and building a new wall from the Lawson Bridge to the Albert Bridge.

Assistant project manager Mark David is also urging townsfolk to have their say.

“We really need the people of Hawick to get behind this, we want to deliver a scheme people are happy with,” he said. Mr David went on to outline that the local authority has a “very long and strenuous” approval process to go through with the government and appropriate authorities, and it is keen to know that it [the scheme] reflects Hawick’s character.

And further stressing the importance of local opinion, he said: “We don’t want

to impose the scheme on anyone, so getting feedback is vital to ensure the approval process goes smoothly.”

The exhibition, which is being held in the town hall on Tuesday and Wednesday between 9am and 9pm, will include a map showing wall allignment, materials and heights, as well as an animated 3D fly-through.

Mr Marshall added: “This really is crunch time for Hawick.”

Meanwhile, the first tranche of funding for the

town’s flood protection scheme has been confirmed by the Scottish Government.

Councillors at this week’s Scottish Borders Council executive meeting heard the government has provided an initial £1.3million to the project as a general capital grant in 2016/17.

In a further development, work has started in the Teviot to clear a significant amount of gravel which is blocking the fish ladder at the Coble Cauld and to tackle the riverside vegetation.

The works are part of a joint initiative between Scottish Borders Council and Scottish Water to use the excess gravel to fill a sizeable hole in the riverbed near the Mansfield footbridge.

The diggers entered the water on Tuesday and quickly cleared the cauld and returned it to a state most Hawick folk will recognise, while a number of onlookers were reported to be delighted with progress.

Denholm, said: “This is really good news and will be warmly welcomed by those either impacted by recent flooding or who care for our town. This is the first step in a programme agreed by all Hawick councillors to remove the nearby vegetation and gravel to improve safety and enhance the visual amenities for townsfolk and tourists.

“It is to be hoped that this very positive action leads to further commitment from Scottish Borders Council to tackle other areas of the river.”

Councillor Marshall added: “What a great news story for the town with the council and SEPA listening and responding to the wishes of the community.

Scottish Water should also be thanked for their support and intervention by planning to use the gravel to resolve the problem in Mansfield.

“I certainly hope this is a first major step in dealing with the recurring gravel and vegetation problems we have in our rivers.” n Comment, page 17

Tuesday sees townsfolk invited to celebrate the historical significance of Hawick’s main river at a specially arranged night of story, song and verse, writes Jason Marshall.

Entitled ‘Where Teviot Rins’, which was a song written by the late Ian Seeley, the event, which will feature a host of well-known local performers, will get under way at the Coble Cauld where Hawick flood protection scheme artist Andrew Mackenzie will give an introduction, after which Ian Landles will say a few words about the river and the cauld.

Michael Aitken will then sing ‘Where Teviot Rins’, followed by the Angling Club’s French Wight who will give a short talk on fishing, before Katie Brydon sings her father Alan’s ‘Salmon Song.’

A 43-year-old man has been remanded in custody at Selkirk Sheriff Court after being accused of causing fear or alarm to his former partner.

Ian Ramsay is charged with sending messages to her at a house in Fisher Avenue, repeatedly attempting to reconcile with her, and threatening to expose her on social media between ThursdaySunday, August 11-14.

Ramsay of Lady Rig View, Heiton, pleaded not guilty to the charge and a trial date was set for September 22 with an intermediate hearing on August 22. Sheriff Peter Paterson refused a motion for bail and he was remanded in custody until the next hearing which will be at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

Access all areas as couple’s ramp saga draws to a close

A Silverbuthall couple are celebrating a new lease of life, following the installation of an access ramp near their home.

Linda Deeks said that her husband George can now leave the house alone for the first time in years thanks to the ramp which covers a steep incline outside their house – and she has sung the praises of two local councillors.

“We never thought this day would come,” she stated.

“George is going away out on his own on his scooter and is seeing people he hasn’t seen for years. He is independent

The Hawick and Denholm members joined the Deeks’ fight more than two years ago, after Linda had already spent five years asking for help with George’s plight.

And with leaving the family home not an option, and Scottish Borders Council’s £35,000 estimate to carry out the work too expensive, the elected pair took matters into their own hands. Councillor McAteer explained: “We visited similar structures which had been provided at a fraction of the cost, and thanks to SBHA allowing us to build the ramp on their land and the criminal justice team agreeing to do the work, we found a cheaper alternative.”

The ramp cost just over £3,000 and was funded by the two councillors securing cash from Teviot and Liddesdale Area Forum’s small schemes budget. Councillor Marshall commented: “Finally after years of trying to find an acceptable solution, both Watson and I have engaged

Bright Street man avoids jail over hospital incident A man who caused a lengthy disturbance in the accident and emergency department at Borders General Hospital has avoided a prison sentence at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

Alexander Deans, 35, of Bright Street, pleaded guilty to a charge of threatening or abusive behaviour.

Graham Fraser, prosecuting, told a previous hearing that the ambulance service received a call at about 7pm about a man who had cut his wrist and it was bleeding heavily. The police said he had punched a picture frame in his home while apparently selfharming.

Mr Fraser continued: “He was taken to hospital . . . but would not give personal details to doctors and started picking at a dressing the ambulance crews had put on him.

“When he was briefly left alone he started smoking which is not allowed in hospital particularly with a lot of oxygen, gases and chemicals in use.

He was shouting and swearing and calling for a different doctor. There were young and elderly people being treated and they were distressed by the accused’s behaviour.”

Mr Fraser said Deans eventually had to be put in the caged section of a police van due to his unruly behaviour and eventually after a period of time co-operated.”

Defence lawyer Robert More said his client had lost control to the extent that he had “imperilled his liberty”.

He said he had suffered a breakdown at the time due to personal issues and had an alcohol problem.

Sheriff Peter Paterson said offences of this nature at the hospital, even though the charge was not under the Emergency Workers Act, usually attracted a jail sentence.

However, Deans was ordered to carry out 175 hours’ unpaid work over the next 12 months.

Dovemount Place ‘jungle’ sparks fierce criticism

The overgrown vegetation in Dovemount Place and on the nearby roundabout has been branded “atrocious”, amid claims the area is now attracting rats.

Councillor Stuart Marshall, Hawick and Hermitage, has this week strongly criticised road network operator Amey, which is responsible for the upkeep of the area, and he says his constituents were sick of looking at a “jungle”.

chair Marion Short has condemned Amey for its efforts to maintain the roundabout, which was one of the locations judged for the town’s Floral Gateway entry at the end of last month.

Having battled with Amey about the unsightly appearance of Dovemount Place since April, a frustrated Councillor Marshall told The Hawick Paper: “Myself and Councillor McAteer were promised that the overgrown vegetation would be cut back, and that a landscaper would tidy it all up. To be honest, I am disappointed it hasn’t been done as agreed.”

He added: “Residents are sick fed up of looking onto a jungle and this week I have reported that rats have been frequently sighted.

“Amey needs to get back on site and rethink their plans, because this is simply not good enough.”

Mrs Short, who has written to three Amey employees this week and even attempted to tidy the area herself, said: “The roundabout and Dovemount are such a mess, it is just atrocious. My husband and I have tried to tidy the perimeter area of the roundabout, but it is just so overgrown.”

Mrs Short also said that a recent attempt by Amey to cut back bushes ahead of the Floral Gateway judging looked like a “botched job”.

aware of issues with the roundabout and Dovemount Place, and that despite recent work ahead of the Floral Gateway competition, it still needed attention.

A spokesperson stated: “We are currently looking at further improvements, and are in the process of

discussing these proposals with Transport Scotland.

We will remain in regular contact with elected members and the local community, in particular Hawick Community Council, and these discussions will continue and will feature in any plans we develop.”

Jury trial date for pub assault accused A man will stand trial by jury next week accused of severely injuring a man to his permanent disfigurement in a local bar.

Garry Douglas, 34, of Paterson Gardens, is charged with assaulting George O’Rourke in the Exchange Bar on September 12.

It is alleged he acted in an aggressive manner towards him, then left the premises before returning, put his head against his head, pulled him from his chair, held his head down and then forced his thumb or finger into his mouth.

Douglas has pleaded not guilty and lodged a special defence of selfdefence.

The trial is due to get under way on the jury sitting scheduled for Monday at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

Hawick Pipe Band acquited themselves well at Saturday’s World Championships in Glasgow, finishing eighth in their qualifying heat. Axe is hovering over 13 telephone boxes Telephone boxes could soon become a thing of the past in Hawick after BT announced plans to axe 101 of its 164 payphones in the Borders, writes Sarah Williamson.

The telecommunications giant blames the reduction in use which has declined by 90 per cent in the last decade – and 13 payphones in and around the town could be lost if the plans

don’t elicit any objections.

Among the telephone boxes which could be removed are those located in Silverbuthall Road, Rosebank Road, Oliver Park/Weensland Road, corner of Bourtree Place and North Bridge Street, near Appletreehall, Cogsmill, and Newmill-on-Teviot.

A BT spokesperson said: “In all instances where there’s no other payphone

within 400 metres, we’ll ask for consent from the local authority to remove the payphone. Where we receive objections from the local authority, we won’t remove the payphone.”

Councillor Stuart Marshall, Hawick and Denholm, said: “Phone boxes may well be unfashionable these days, but in some areas people might feel reassured

that they actually live close to a public telephone.”

Councillor Watson McAteer, also Hawick and Denholm, said his main concern was the removal of a communication channel often used at times of emergency and particularly when the respective services’ need for public help and support has never been greater.

Scottish Water moves to quell rat problem

Scottish Water has taken action to allay fears over a recent upsurge in rat sightings in the Mansfield Road area.

Councillor Stuart Marshall, Hawick and Denholm, told The Hawick Paper that several of his constituents had reported seeing rodents in their gardens, and this coincided with work on the flood-hit sewer.

He said: “In recent weeks there has been an increase in sightings of rats, both in Dovemount Place and, more worryingly, the Mansfield Road area.”

But the Hawick and

Denholm member said that after contacting both Scottish Water and Scottish Borders Council’s environmental health department, the cause of the influx of rodents became apparent.

He explained: “Scottish Water has been extremely helpful in resolving the issue in Mansfield Road and it appears that the ongoing sewer excavation works have resulted in the rats’ nests being disturbed.”

Mr Marshall went on: “Scottish Water have hired a pest control company, and I’m reassured to learn this week that the situation is now under control.”

A spokesperson for the utility firm confirmed that its staff had discovered the

rats while undertaking “significant and essential works” on the sewer in Mansfield Road.

“It seems as though, while levelling off the land to install the site compound, our works may have disturbed the [rats’] habitat, and we are now taking steps to resolve this issue.”

The spokesperson added: “Having received a notification from a local councillor, Scottish Water has organised for a pestcontrol agency to address the issue. It will undertake controls around the recently installed compound near Mansfield Road.”

Mr Marshall added: “I can’t thank Scottish Water enough for taking such swift action.”

A man who crashed a car while five times the legal alcohol limit has appeared from custody at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

Thirty-five-year-old Laurentiu Iordan, of Northcote Street, pleaded guilty to driving with a breath/alcohol count of 114 microgrammes – the legal limit being 22 – in Hawick on Sunday.

He also admitted having no insurance for the vehicle.

Procurator fiscal Graham Fraser said Iordan worked as a farmer and sent money home to his wife and child in Romania.

He added: ”He had just bought the car and went for a drive in it but collided with two vehicles.”

The court heard Iordan apologised to one of the car owners but had the keys taken from him.

Sheriff Peter Paterson banned Iordan for 14 months and imposed a £300 fine.

A Hawick man and so much more, that’s Cammy

F

rom the CommonRiding to rugby refereeing, the world of pantomime to Robbie Burns, and after-dinner speaking to firefighting – Cammy Rudkin has done it all, and still does today.

A real all-rounder, Cammy has many strings to his bow, and his is a life crammed with page after page of contrasting passions and talents.

And it’s these pages that turn into chapters, telling the colourful story of Cammy in this grey auld toon of ours.

From a well-­known Hawick family, he was brought up in Longcroft Crescent and educated at Drumlanrig Primary School and Hawick High.

Looking back on his school days, Cammy said: “Drumlanrig was a great school and I have many memories of it. The best being at the Common-Riding when I would get off the school to go to the Tuesday ride-outs, after my father had written letters to get

By John Slorance permission. I thought it was just brilliant to get away to follow the Cornet.”

He added: “I quite liked the high school as well. My favourite teacher was Patsy Brooks who taught cookery.

She must have made an impact on me as I took an interest in cooking and thought about being a chef.

“In fact I started working part-time after school in the kitchen at Hawick Golf Club.

I enjoyed the work but at the weekends I was working while my pals were going out.

I was missing out so I decided I didn’t want to be a chef and began going out with my friends instead.”

in a completely different direction which took him into the painting and decorating trade. He began to work with his father, Johnny, who had a painting and decorating business, and duly served his apprenticeship.

At the age of 21, Cammy, however, decided to go on his own – a big step for a young man.

His entrance into the business world didn’t go quite according to plan, however.

“I was set to start work on the Monday but went out on the Saturday night to celebrate my 21st birthday,” recalled Cammy. “It wasn’t much of a celebration, though, because I fell down the stairs in a pub and ended up in hospital with a cast on my leg! It was a real nightmare.

“But cast or not I needed to work as I was self­employed and had jobs to do. So for a good few weeks I worked with that cast on my leg. That was almost 12 years ago and I have had no more freak accidents since and business has gone well.”

A Hawick man through and through, Cammy has a great passion for the Common-Riding, of which he said: “I live for the CommonRiding, I just love everything about it.

“I first followed the Cornet when I was five years old. It was the year John Douglas was Cornet.

“My first ride-out was to Priesthaugh and I was rein-led by my father. The following year I became a Mosstrooper and I can well remember how proud I was being presented with my Mosstroopers’ badge on St Mary’s church steps.

“Since my first ride-out I have followed ever since and never missed a single year. The Common-Riding really does mean a lot to me.

I’ve had some really great Common-Ridings, my biggest thrill being singing at the Friday Hut – an

unbelievable experience and something I’ll never forget.”

Another big part of Cammy’s life is rugby. He first took to the pitch as a player but has since become a topnotch referee “I played for Hawick Wanderers and then Hawick Linden but I was pretty useless,” he said. “I was that bad it ended up I couldn’t get a game for a team so I decided to pack in and I thought my rugby days were over.”

However, Cammy’s rugby days were just beginning. And thanks to some persuasion by former Hawick full-back John Hogg, who on retiring from playing had taken up refereeing, Cammy decided to have a go at being a whistler and has never looked back since.

From humble beginnings officiating at school and semi-­junior games he has since reached the highest level – including an under-20 international, a full international between Spain and Romania before a

When I first started [refereeing] I never thought I would manage to reach the level I have crowd of 17,000 in Madrid, plus other top matches – and has done himself proud.

When I first started I never thought for a minute I would manage to reach the level I have,” he admitted.

“Due to being a ref, I’ve been to a lot of places and had some great experiences such as doing the Spain­v Romania international match.

“This season I’m mainly going to be running the line a lot in big professional matches and I’m looking forward to it.”

Besides his work, the CommonRiding and his refereeing duties, Cammy has more than made his mark in other spheres of town life.

productions, making his first appearance in Robinson Crusoe during which he delighted audiences when he teamed up with well-known Hawick face Ian Landles as the show’s hilarious duo, ‘Cockles and Mussels’.

It was due to the influence of Ian, who at the time was a history teacher at the high school, that Cammy took on the role. And Ian was also to play his part in nurturing Cammy’s talents as a firstrate reciter of the works of the Bard.

Explaining this, Cammy commented: “Ian or Mr Landles, who he was to me at the time, asked me if I could address the haggis at the high school Burns supper. The following year he got me to do Tam o’ Shanter and that was it, I was hooked on Burns and over the years I’ve done many Burns suppers which I love doing. In one year I did 16 – that’s a lot of haggis and a lot of whisky!”

Besides this, Cammy is an after-dinner speaker and of late has become a retained firefighter.

Married to Lauder girl Rebecca McNeil, Cammy is certainly a busy man and he is going to be even busier soon as the couple are expecting their first child.

Summing himself up, Cammy said: “I’m a right Hawick man. They say you can’t take a fish out of water, well you can’t take the Hawick out of me.”

And Hawick has been all the better for this for many years.

Scope to expand routes, insists bus firm boss

Bus operator Perryman’s has pledged to expand its new Hawick routes if there is enough demand from passengers.

The services, which were launched on Monday, were the subject of a lively question and answer session at last Tuesday’s community council meeting in the lesser town hall, at which Sharon Morrison, commercial manager with Craig of Campbeltown, which bought Perryman’s Buses inFebruary this year, said the new Hawick routes were part of a bigger development in the Scottish Borders which will see the firm invest £500,000 in new vehicles.

Perryman’s would not be replacing the old First Bus routes “like for like”, and had carried out a route risk assessment to ensure there was realiability and also to make sure they were safe.

Miss Morrison went on: “Some areas we can’t cover because of congestion where there are heavily parked cars. If we did cover those areas it would have a knock-on effect on the realibility which would, in turn, make the service unreliable, people wouldn’t use it and we’d have to remove the service.

“We will monitor the service, and if we see a demand for a particular area, then we would look to cover that [area].”

There were bus stops around 300 yards away from the areas that they weren’t covering, said Miss Morrison, and it was great news that Perryman’s were coming into a new area and they wanted townsfolk to use the new service. “We are keen to work

with the local community,” she stressed.

Councillor Davie Paterson, Hawick and Hermitage, said he was delighted that Perryman’s would be running buses, but wondered if there was any chance of increasing the service in the west end.

Miss Morrison said they would continue to monitor the route, and the firm’s “dedicated team of drivers” would provide feedback through to the depot and, if need be, they would look at amending the service.

“We have to start from somewhere,” she added. “We can’t come in and say that we want to serve every bus stop because that’s not commercially viable.” Alluding to Miss Morrison’s earlier comment about parked cars, Councillor Paterson then said he and his fellow councillors would raise the issue with Scottish Borders Council officers.

Danny Finnan, among the 3o or so in the audience, was concerned that the Perryman’s route did not cover Mayfield.

He said there were around 600 residents in the area, and many of them relied on the buses.

Explaining the decision not to include this part of town, Tony O’Connell, operations supervisor with Perryman’s, said they had identified a safety issue at the junction of Dickson Street and Mayfield Park, where the undercarriage of buses was coming into contact with the road.

Councillor Stuart Marshall, Hawick and Denholm, said the town was rocked a couple of months ago when First announced it was pulling out, and although the Perryman’s route

wasn’t ideal, he urged townsfolk to work with them to sort things out.

Miss Morrison: “This isn’t a forever timetable. We will listen to what you [local bus users] are saying.

“We are committed to delivering a reliable, clean and friendly bus service, but we need your feedback and you to use the service.”

Responding to a question from a pensioner in the audience, who had lived in the west end for 55 years, and asked how First Bus had always been able to get round the Renwick Terrace/Moat Crescent/Ramsay Road area in the past, but Perryman’s would now not be able to do so, Miss Morrison said she would look into this particular section of the route.

The OAP said she had had two hip replacements and a broken ankle and couldn’t walk to [the nearest stop in] Rosebank Road.

Miss Morrison: “That’s disappointing that you’re not going to be able to use the service, but we’re taking notes of everything you’re saying.”

Echoing Councillor Marshall’s earlier comments, community council chair Marion Short said the Perryman’s service, albeit more limited than the previous one, was better than nothing at all.

In a press release issued last Thursday, Perryman’s said their two new Hawick buses, which will service routes H1 and H2, will operate on an hourly frequency.

Community councillor Greg McLeod has blasted the “atrocious” state of the pavements in Hawick.

And although praising the Hawick in Bloom volunteer group for ensuring the town looked “absolutely tremendous”, he added: “I can’t help but think that when you see places like the town hall, it looks like an Armani suit with an old pair of trainers on [referring to the striking floral displays adorning the town hall which were in sharp contrast to the heavily weeded pavements below].

“The weeds are everywhere,” said Mr McLeod.

Scottish Borders Council councillor Davie Paterson said he had spotted the problem at the weekend and immediately brought the issue to the attention of SBC officials.

He said the area in question was due to be sprayed with weedkiller at the end of this month, but he wanted it done before then. The situation was not acceptable, added Mr Paterson.

The trees lining Duke Street are “scheduled to go” to make way for the town's flood protection scheme.

That’s according to Scottish Borders Council councillor Watson McAteer who told last Tuesday’s community council meeeting that the current plans outline the requirement for that side of the road to be sheet piled.

But he wondered if there was an alternative to sheet piling which would save the trees. “It’s a question that’s got to be asked,” he said.

Community councillor French Wight added: “I was at a meeting with the flood group stakeholders and I said to them they should make it public knowledge at the forthcoming [flood scheme] exhibition what they are going to do with the trees.”

Mr Wight claimed the Mansfield Road side was “a definite” for the trees in that area to be removed, and there was a 90 per cent chance that the trees in Duke Street would also come down.

Around 30 big-hearted runners have been clocking up the miles ahead of a dual fund-raiser in memory of town stalwart Ronnie Nichol, who died in November aged 55 after a brave battle with cancer.

Sunday, September 25, will see the Teri contingent ‘Running for Ronnie’ in the Loch Ness Marathon or the Loch Ness 10K, both of which are being held in and around Inverness – and in the process they are aiming to raise as much money as possible for two charities, Pancreatic Cancer UK and the Margaret Kerr Palliative Care Unit at Borders General Hospital.

A spokesperson for the runners told The Hawick Paper: “Late last year, the town was saddened to hear of the loss of a true gentleman, Ronnie Nichol. He worked tirelessly and gave his all for his town and the folk he loved.

“Ronnie left us all with so many memories and now it’s time for family and friends to come together and do something great in his memory.”

The opening Saturday is aimed at the younger generation, but the second Saturday (August 27) is very much for the adults.

And once again the Stevie T Band and PYRE will headline a concert at Teviotdale Leisure Centre.

This is the third time both bands have performed together and it has quickly become a massive hit with live music lovers.

Looking ahead to the night, the Stevie T Band’s Stevie Turnbull said: “The leisure centre event has become a real highlight for us as a band. The atmosphere is simply incredible and we all get a real buzz from playing in front of such a massive crowd.

“People not only come up to the stage to dance but also simply get up and dance around where they are sitting. It really is a special night to be part of and it feels like a mini Hawick Mair when we play.”

Stevie added: “We’ve been working on a few new songs to unveil on the night and once again we’re looking forward to playing alongside PYRE who are brilliant to work with.”

by Paul McDonald from PYRE who said: “We have loved being involved in this event the last two times. It is an incredible event and we really feed off the excitement generated by the crowd.”

Using a baseboard of 2ft 3inches by 6ft, the layout remains unnamed and displayed as work in progress.

There is one exhibit that features two gauges, N from the original Magic Roundabout and 00 in its new revamped and highly entertaining design which also caters for members of the public to carefully drive Thomas The Tank engine and his train around the track.

Three other 00 gauge layouts are on display and belong to members of Shildon Model Railway Club.

Hailing from the northeast of England there is a distinctly industrial scene depicted in all of them: Norwood Yard follows a track design published in Hornby magazine in 2007 and set in the steam days of the 1960s.

wagons coming and going for inspection.

Failure of that inspection may result in their withdrawl from service and sent onward to end their days in Gypsies Lane, a scrapyard set in County Durham and covering an era when steam locomotives were being saved from the breakers’ torch by preservation societies as they awaited their fate along with early green diesels.

The largest of the scales at the show is 0 gauge and a welcome return of Pentland Model Group with their superb 22-feet long Caithreay with the realistic sights and sounds of the blue diesel era. Ettrickmuir is a new layout by club member Richard Crockett who now lives in Dunblane and is

visiting for the weekend with another of his superb and highly detailed scenes from yesteryear.

And it is yesteryear that the final 0 gauge layout belongs when Hornby Tinplate ruled, and Jackie Chalmers, from Jedburgh, has preserved many of the items that were available and created a working display.

The locomotives require to be wound up with a key to operate the spring to make them move – fantastic history.

Finally, Middle Peak depicts a scene from a real life Derbyshire quarry created in the finescale EM gauge with a number of scratch-built rolling stock and locomotives.

Teries are set to be transported back to the swinging sixties for Hawick Film and Video Group’s hugely-popular annual pictorial which gets under way on Monday.

This year’s focus is 1966 – when Carswell Imrie was Cornet, Dickson Street was being demolished, and top pop sensations Gerry and the Pacemakers hit Hawick.

But there was so much more going on in the town 50 years ago, and the group’s Croft Road cinema is the place to be to enjoy what was an action-packed 12 months.

Narrated by James Palmer­-Douglas, directed by Shirley Laing, and with the editing and sound by Scott Renwick and Andy Douglas, the show lasts 48 minutes and what an entertaining 48 minutes they are as memories are rekindled of half-acentury ago.

While on the other side of the coin, it will conjure up images for folk of a Hawick that they have not seen before.

There is, as always, a large section on the CommonRiding, with Carswell Imrie taking the reins as Cornet, ably supported by Right and Left-Hand Men, Robert Pringle and Rob Brydon.

Coverage of the celebrations start with a scene of the cavalcade of horses coming down Linhope at the Mosspaul Ride-out. And from here on, one gallops to a variety of other events, such as the Thursday night Chase, the first ever Kirking of a Cornet at Burnfoot Church, the tying of the ribbons on the Horse monument, and the Friday morning Chase.

There’s loads more to savour of Cornet Imrie’s big year, such as the cutting of the sod, the dipping of the flag, the wreath-laying, the glory of the Mair and the handing back of the flag at the town hall. There’s also a glance at the colourful world of the shows as well as a visit to the games at Volunteer Park which attracted a huge crowd.

There is a lot more to the 1966 pictorial than the Common-Riding, however.

One can take in the new road being built in Wilton Hill which really changed the face of Hawick at the time, as well as the old Dickson Street, and the disappearance of the prefabs and the building of the new houses that took their place.

The long-gone Hawick railway station is then featured as ‘The Flying Scotsman’ and ‘Blue Peter’ pull into town.

entertaining a big crowd at the town hall, while Hawick’s very own dynamic group of the time, Carol and the Citizens, are seen in all their glory in the same sequence.

They might have been a support act on this occasion but Carol, who was Hawick’s answer to top star Lulu and her band, were stars in their own right.

more, many more, features, and there is also a supporting programme in the form of three short films. One being the story of cashmere in the days when mills such as Pringle and Braemar flourished, the other two comprising comedy pieces with local actors.

Teries in Tartan in step for festival trip to Spain

Teries in Tartan have been on the go for six years now – performing a mixture of country and Highland dancing, and also have musicians in the group who play various instruments.

Over the years, as well as performing locally, we have visited Lithuania, Belgium, Poland and Germany (twice) to attend various folk dance festivals. We have also enjoyed welcoming these groups to Hawick in 2011 and 2014 Last month, 21 members travelled to Galicia in northern Spain for six days as guests of the Do Lusco o Fusco dance group. All of the Teries stayed with host families in various towns and villages, the main one being A Guarda. It was good meeting new people and making new friends.

We gave three performances which the Spanish audiences seemed to enjoy, and we, in turn, enjoyed watching our hosts and a dance group from Majorca who were

also attending the festival.

The host group also played the Spanish version of the bagpipes which are a very popular instrument in Galician culture.

When not dancing, we enjoyed various activities as a group and with our host families including visits to local landmarks, climbing a mountain to swim in a natural pool, and to go out for meals etc. (which were often at midnight in typical Spanish fashion).

A highlight was a visit to Santiago de Compostela, one of the most beautiful and historic towns in Spain and the end point of the Camino Pilgrim Route through Europe (The Way of St James).

This has been an excellent experience for us all – getting to live the Spanish lifestyle which is very different to ours, and the trip was something that was enjoyed by everyone – we would all do it again!

Next year, we are hosting the Spanish group here in Hawick and look forward to them staying with our families and renewing friendships!

Outlining the comprehensive training offered by TWS Bikes, which has a dedicated room for the theory part of the course, Derek added: “We give riders a basic knowledge of their bike, the roads, driving, tyre pressure adjustments, oil

levels, chain tensions and checking lights.”

The second section of the training course is held in the car park adjacent to Burnfoot school, where cones are laid out to replicate a street layout, with trainees put through their paces by instructor Kenny Lamb, who has 15 years’ rider training under his belt.

Paper has ear to ground to keep people connected Travelling around the Borders as an MP, I’m always encouraged to see the loyalty that people of all ages still feel towards their native towns.

This is why I’m so pleased to see the launch of a new paper for Hawick – with its ear to the ground and its local colours proudly displayed.

And it’s great to see local journalists and businesses taking the initiative by investing their expertise and funds in this paper.

It has been a tough time for local newspapers everywhere – but in an area like the Borders a vibrant local press is absolutely vital in order to keep people informed and connected to their own community.

Memories of school in 1956 I wondered if any of your readers were pupils at Drumlanrig-St Cuthbert’s School way back in 1956?

That was the year when Wendy Horne, Francis Elliot, and myself, Anna Mein, joined the staff as fresh-outof-college teachers. Basil Wilson was headmaster and Effie Ingles the infant teacher. Miss Wood was a long-standing staff member.

I also recall that there must have been some doubt over the structure of the old school, as when it was Common-Riding time we were instructed to sing the songs as quietly as possible in case the roof fell in!

My last 24 years of teaching have been in Durban, South Africa, but I’ve never forgotten my first pupils in Hawick.

Comment There can be absolutely no doubt that it is, as Councillor Stuart Marshall put it, “crunch time” for the town as plans for the £36million flood protection scheme go on display next week.

The face of Hawick as it has been known for decades will change forever under these proposals, of that there is also no doubt. So it is imperative that everyone who is able to

attend the display, does so, and also makes their voice heard. If the exhibition is poorly attended, Teries may very well end up with a scheme that huge swathes of them aren’t happy with. That’s the stark reality of the situation, but it’s in our hands.

We can influence the process, if we choose to do so, but we could also leave it to others which, more often than not, leads to

seemingly endless bouts of disharmony.

Getting the approval of townsfolk is also vital in terms of the approval process going smoothly, says Scottish Borders Council’s assistant project manager Mark David. In other words, the local authority would like to hear any concerns Teries might have at this stage, rather than further down the line, by which time plans would be at an

advanced stage and very difficult, if not impossible, to alter.

The sheer scale of the project will no doubt become apparent at the exhibition on Tuesday and Wednesday in the town hall, but what is already apparent is the necessity for townsfolk to have their say now, while their views can still be taken on board.

here’s one overriding thing that I’ll always remember from the last few months as our plans for The Hawick Paper began to take shape, and that’s the unstinting support we’ve had from townsfolk who have been right behind us from the word go.

The backing we’ve had, particularly when we’ve encountered some fairly serious obstacles on the journey leading up to today’s first edition, has been second to none. It really has.

It’s something that really does make you proud to belong to this town. We’re a paper that is, and always will be, your paper. Please don’t forget that, and don’t ever think twice about picking up the phone or dropping us an email.

That’s what we’re here for, to reflect your views, good or bad, and without fear or favour.

After all, every Teri, local group, club, organisation and business wants the same thing: a vibrant and prosperous town. It really was good of the Salvationists to agree to their premises being used as a drop-off point, and they’re just one of many organisations in the town who have gone the extra mile for The Hawick Paper.

igh on my agenda this week is the issue of potholes and the rapid deterioration in our roads around my ward.

Some very hard-hitting headlines were made recently when, for the third time in six years, Audit Scotland published a report on the condition of our roads network. With it came recommendations to both councils and the government that they should be implementing a much clearer plan of action and timetable attached in order to address what can

Last week, while forwarding complaints regarding more defects on our roads, I received a very quick response reminding me that the council’s criteria

for determining the filling in of a pot hole was the fact that it had to be of a depth of “40mm” or more and some of the ones that I had put forward were slightly under that category.

While I fully appreciate there have to be guidelines to be followed, I do think, however, that there should also be a level of flexibility applied to this rule.

The bottom line is that while we have a fantastic roads team at Scottish Borders Council who cope under enormous pressures with little or no money to go around, we, as a council, should be relentless in our efforts to pressurise the

Scottish Government so that they will finally recognise that until local authorities are given much higher levels of financial support, then our 3000km of Border roads will, I’m afraid, continue to decline rapidly.

ow that all our elected members are back from their summer sabbatical, and with one or two of them appearing to be on permanent holiday, what can we look forward to in the lead-up to the May 2017 local elections?

I can guarantee a lot of promises that might just include the return of the green buckets, or the complete eradication of dog muck or even the quick return of the railway to Hawick and on to Carlisle.

There will be a lot of back-stabbing and personal abuse all designed to

18 | CLUBS & DISTRICT n 50+ Group walkers Thirteen walkers went for a tough climb of the Eildons and a riverside walk on Sunday. Starting from the fishing loch on the Bowden Road, they climbed the small ‘fourth’ Eildon first, then the third one, missed out the biggest, and then on to the second-biggest. Fine views all around were enjoyed in a bright but coolish breeze.

Half way down the last hill, a leisurely lunch was taken and a lively discussion took place on where certain area of interest was! Nature’s fruits were enjoyed in the way of blueberries and rasps on the way down (not often on our walks).

The group then made their way down to the Tweed by way of the bypass tunnel and Newstead. A ‘non plussed’ herd of cows watched the walkers pass by on the way upstream and soon they reached the ‘wall’ where some took the ‘adrenalin’ route and others the easier new path through the undergrowth. Melrose was reached in record time and ice cream was relished in the square waiting on the cars returning. Next walk is in the Peebles area on August 28. – IC

As an example, they donated nearly £4,000 to Hawick Flood Group and have assisted many others by supporting foodbanks, and the annual high school prize-giving, as well as providing the medals for the primary schools’ swimming gala among many other good causes.

n Senior citizens

The Hawick Senior Citizens’ Association’s weekly lunch club resumes on Thursday, September 1, and new members are always welcome to come along for a meal and the chance to enjoy the company.

The club is particularly fortunate in having four chefs and a dedicated

band of volunteers to help with the lunches, and the service they provide is very much appreciated. However, illness and emergencies do occur so the Association would welcome any additional help in preparing and serving meals to the 30-or-so regular members attending. A rota system is in operation, and members of the public who would wish to help out either by joining the rota or just attending on an occasional basis should contact HSCA vicechairman Derick Tait on 07908 137656.

Councillor George Turnbull, Hawick and Hermitage, has hit out at the “atrocious surface” on the B6399 Hawick to Newcastleton road, writes Jason Marshall.

“This is of real concern, especially if you were to meet a large lorry and be forced to drive on this atrocious surface which could cause an accident or damage your average car,” he said.

“The scale of the problem is immense whether in town or in the rural areas and it will take years and millions of pounds to reinstate.”

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson commented: “These defects were picked up during a recent inspection, but at present there is no planned patching schedule for this section of road. We will prioritise these repairs as soon as reasonably possible with the budget and resources that are available to us.”

Jim Renwick, Stuart Hogg, Jimmie Guthrie, Steve Hislop, Sir Chay Blyth, Senga McCrone, Ivan Laing, Colin Hume – and these names barely scratch the surface of the town’s ability to produce sporting excellence. But how many of you have heard of Archie Campbell?

Archibald ‘Archie’ Campbell was born in Hawick in 1824. In that year Myreslawgreen was given its current name, the town’s first modern education institution – the Hawick School of Arts – was established, Stobs House was saved from fire by the actions of servants, a new turnpike road was opened via Galalaw (paving the way for the modern A7) and the dye works opened in Slitrig Crescent.

Little is known of Archie’s early life in Hawick, though we know he moved to Glasgow as a young man and went on to become a key figure in that city’s sporting heritage.

During the summer of 1848, Archie set about creating a cricket club in the Kinning Park district of Glasgow. He bought new stumps, a ball, and shared his knowledge of the game with locals, soon attracting 27 members. He oversaw the merger of two established teams, Thistle and Wallacegrove, to form Clydesdale Cricket Club.

Clydesdale is the third oldest club in Scotland and also holds the distinction of being Glasgow’s oldest surviving team sports organisation.

Among the treasures of the Mitchell Library is an extraordinary scrapbook kept by Archie, which contains an extensive collection of early Scottish cricket material, including scorecards, tickets and posters from the 1840s

By Alastair Redpath onwards. Pictured below is a letter from his collection which highlights one of the challenges in setting up a cricket club. It is addressed ‘Dear Baldy’ from a friend in Edinburgh who was able to give him some sound advice on where to buy essential equipment.

Dear Baldy, A happy new year to you old boy! How are you all? I have just returned from the Grange cricket ground and have succeeded at last in getting what I think you want. I found Old Sparks remarkably civil, and he takes a lively interest in the success of your club. He furnishes bats, wickets and balls of the best manufacture much cheaper than anyone in Scotland, and all the clubs here get their materials from him. The Grange club saved £2 last season by taking their balls alone from him.

Yours very sincerely, Frank Lightbody Frank Lightbody (1824-1896) was a young civil engineer in Edinburgh, and although his personal connection to Campbell is not clear his advice was certainly useful.

John ‘Old Sparks’ (1778-1854) was Scotland’s first cricket professional and certainly a useful

person to know during the formative years of the sport in Glasgow.

At the corner of Pollok Street and Scotland Street (to the north of what later became Shields Road Underground Station, now covered by the M8 motorway), Campbell arranged for the club to rent some land from cow feeder Mr Tweedie, for the princely sum of £7 to £9 per annum (“I forget which” said Archie some 40 years later). Within three years, an 8,000-strong crowd was present at the new ground to witness Scotland vanquish England, in a contest which saw 20 wickets captured by John Wisden, of Cricketers’ Almanac fame.

In just over a decade Archie became a highly influential figure in Scottish sport. In 1862, his protégé John McNeill registered the highest ever score against an All-England XI (36) and Archie himself took six England wickets. In the England team that day was Edgar Willsheer, of Kent, whose bowling action in a match at The Oval later in the season led to the law being changed to allow overarm actions.

in the forward line, David Wotherspoon in defence and Robert W. Gardner as captain and goalkeeper, Clydesdale FC were in 1874 the team that broke Queen’s Park’s immaculate goal concession record. They also once trounced Notts County by a 6-0 margin.

By the turn of the century, however, the football club was bankrupt, though the associated cricket and hockey teams continue to this day. Clydesdale is now one of Scotland’s leading clubs and a founder member of the Western District Cricket Union.

Campbell’s interwoven roles in both sports led to an invite to an important meeting on March 13, 1873, at Dewar’s Hotel in Queen’s Park. At that meeting the Scottish Football Association (SFA) was founded by representatives of Queen’s Park, Clydesdale, Dumbreck, Eastern Granville, Third Lanark and Vale of Leven. Archibald Campbell (Clydesdale) was elected president and Archibald Rae (Queen’s Park) became its first secretary. Two other Clydesdale men, Ebenezer Hendry and William Gibb, were also appointed to the committee.

During Archie’s spell at the helm of the SFA, the committee introduced the Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup (Scottish Cup), an inter-city match CLYDESDALE CRICKET ARCHIVES, THE MITCHELL LIBRARY, GLASGOW of Scottish cricket, with victories over Grange and Perth, and frequent totals of more than 200.

The club moved from their first ground in Kinning Park to their present ground at Titwood in 1873, the old ground being sold to a fledgling football club called Glasgow Rangers, whom Clydesdale have maintained strong links with to the present day.

Archie’s cricket achievements and his role in establishing the game in Glasgow should be enough to turn heads. But there’s more.

In 1872 he helped to form Clydesdale FC in an attempt to maintain the cricketers’ fitness levels during the off-season. With Scottish international players Frederick Anderson, John McPherson, James J. Lang, and James Tassie Richmond

between Glasgow and Sheffield, and a second-ever international fixture with England (which Scotland won 2-1).

Into his twilight years Archie still maintained a link with his beloved cricket. In 1890, The Barrhead Railway Company decided to build a station (Crossmyloof) on the site of the original Titwood, while neighbouring lands were to be developed and feued for housing.

Campbell was so admired that he obtained a personal assurance from Sir John Stirling Maxwell that the cricket ground at Titwood would be preserved. In 1898, Clydesdale’s 50th anniversary was celebrated in the now-demolished Saint Enoch Hotel, with Archie present as one of the chief guests.

Sadly, he died on April 30, 1904, just weeks before Clydesdale opened their second Titwood ground.

It is surprising to note that there is little or no mention of Archibald Campbell outside of cricket circles, in spite of his prominent and influential role at the helm of the SFA. In my role as honorary secretary of Hawick Archaeological Society, I intend to contact the Scottish Football Museum, conduct further research into Archie’s early life and help to champion one of Hawick’s true sporting greats.

Film night fund-raiser Hawick in Bloom is aiming to boost its funds with a film night fundraiser next weekend.

The group, which ensures the town’s streets are awash with colour every summer, is staging a special screening of 2015 film, The Lady in the Van, at the Tower Mill Cinema, on Saturday, August 27, at 7pm, with proceeds going to the group.

Callum Kerr MP in town this week

Hawick launch for MP Kerr’s tour Hawick MP Calum Kerr launched his first constituency tour on Monday with a series of visits around the town and Liddesdale.

After picking up a camper van from Classic Camper Holidays in Weensland Mill, Mr Kerr pitched up in the Common Haugh car park, before travelling

to Bonchester Bridge, Newcastleton, Whithaugh Park, Hermitage and Burnfoot Community Hub. Mr Kerr told The Hawick Paper: “I was glad to start the week off in Hawick and to be using a camper van hired from a local business.

“The van means that we can be more flexible with our time on the tour and I

think it’s a far more open and accessible way of meeting people than sitting inside a town hall.

“This has been made all the more enjoyable thanks to the glorious weather we’ve had so far.

“And as a result it’s great to be reminded that I’m lucky enough to represent one of the most beautiful

constituencies in the country.”

The tour saw the MP travel the length and breadth of his constituency over the course of this week.

“All the different parts of the Borders have their own specific needs and concerns, so it’s vital for me to get to as wide a range of places as possible,” added Mr Kerr.

The name of our town.

Note that although we often tell people that it is pronounced “hoik” (to rhyme with “oik”), in fact it is more often pronounced like “ha-eek” (so that “hawicky” would rhyme with “psyche”!).

The spelling has varied over time, with variants like “Hawic” and “Hawyk” being common in the 12th to 15th centuries.

There are many suggestions for the origin of the name, with perhaps “hedged houses” from the Old English “haga wic” being the most popular.

Nevertheless, there is no early recording of the name containing the “g” to lend support to that interpretation. Other possible translations include “town on the low pasture” or “high dwelling”.

We will probably never know. But to Teries the word “Hawick” always translates as “the best toon!”

Recent wind and rain has certainly left its mark on local gardens.

Any tall-growing herbaceous perennials that were not adequately staked and supported were damaged, and bedding plants have been affected by the rain and continual dampness with petals rotting and buds not opening.

One of the worst affected is single-flowered petunias. Their large, delicate, thin petals are very susceptible to that kind of adverse weather and can be a sorry sight, whereas the doubles seem to withstand damp conditions much better. So, there’s a reminder for next season: go for the doubleflowered varieties.

Still on the subject of petunias, of all the flowers that benefit from dead-heading, this one really does show it. It’s not that pleasant to do, though, the stems are sticky, but regular removal of the spent blooms encourages continual flowering. n With the mild and damp weather, weeds are certainly enjoying the conditions – they

are thriving and popping up everywhere – everyone is complaining about them.

In a sunny summer, working over the soil with a hoe is all that is required, the hot sun doing the rest and killing them off. In damp weather, however, hand weeding is the only way to get rid of them.

Driveways can become unsightly.

Where they are laid with mono blocks the spaces between are a haven for weeds and it’s a slow job to remove them even with the specially shaped wire brushes available. Here weedkillers are the answer but, of course, not applied if rain is forecast as that will weaken the solution.

n The pruning of shrubs seems to pose a problem for many gardeners. Pruned at the wrong time could mean no flowers. All too often the tidying up at the end of a season includes pruning shrubs.

If a shrub is one that flowers in spring and early summer such as forsythia, kerria, jasmine, philadelphus, ribes (flowering currant) and weigela, they should be cut back immediately after flowering.

Do this at the end of the season and you are removing the stems that have grown during summer and autumn which give blooms in the first half of the year.

Our spring sevens circuit would suffer if international calendar changes

T

he annual sevens tournament provides a financial lifeline for most rugby clubs throughout the Scottish Borders.

This year’s Hawick Sevens gate was hit by bad weather and once again clashed with the BT Cup Finals Day at Murrayfield.

But now it seems a bigger, much more serious, threat is on the horizon if World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont gets his way to “synchronise” the global rugby calendar.

The former England Grand Slam-winning captain insists European rugby’s crown jewel, the 6 Nations, may have to be moved back to April if “harmonisation” is to be successful.

The International Rugby Players’ Association is also backing a revamp, along with back-to-back World Cup holders New Zealand. Many already feel the international season is far too long and threatening players’ longterm fitness.

Will club interests be taken into consideration should such a decision be made?

Or will, as is most likely, the decision to switch be dictated by the TV giants?

Paris or Rome would certainly be appealing to international supporters in April/May, with the Hawick club, among several others, the losers.

If the international restructuring is given the green light it really would take some serious headscratching in local rugby circles to come up with a solution that would ensure the Borders sevens circuit has a future beyond 2019.

Buccleuch pair win derby to reach finals Buccleuch Bowling Club’s Jim Reilly and Colin Birchley are through to the Borders finals in the gents’ pairs after an impressive 16-11 victory over their Hawick rivals in the play-offs.

Reilly and Birchley can now look forward to competing in the Border Bowling Association finals, which are due to be played at Gordon on August 27. They

won the play-off 16-11 against Scott Clarkson and Colin Spalding from the Hawick club in a match played on the Wilton green.

In the singlehand, Steve Richardson of the Hawick club booked his place in the finals by defeating Langholm New’s Scott Morrison.

In the triples, Wilton’s Jim Notman, Chris Miller and Colin Sutherland (skip) were beaten by Ettrick Forest trio S. Grieve, Colin Sandilands and Greg Sandilands (skip).

In the fours, J. Darling, C. Anderson, M. Hogg and E. McGregor

(skip) of the Hawick club qualified alongside Abbotsford.

The Wilton senior four of C. Rae, B. Jaffray, G. Brownlee and A. Waugh (skip) defeated W. Wells, R. Bell. G. Lyall and L. Clarkson (skip) of Hawick to reach the finals.

The junior (under-21) qualifier was R. Brady of Wilton who defeated Hawick’s Simon Spalding.

Ladies lose out to Carnoustie

Three lady members of Buccleuch Bowling Club, M. Pearson, C. Hogarth and M. Martin, qualified to play in the East of Scotland Women’s Bowling Association Finals, played at Sighthill in Edinburgh.

They came up against a strong Carnoustie side, who emerged as winners by 13 shots to 12.

Meanwhile, the club’s seniors narrowly lost 55-46 to the Earlston/Melrose team at Earlston.

Top rink for the Buccleuch side was the Guy Johnstone skipped rink, ably supported by George Godfrey and Tom Edmison.

Last Wednesday night Buccleuch were away to Newtown in a league decider. With rainfall forecast, the weathermen were correct and after two hours the game was stopped after all rinks had played 11 ends. Buccleuch started the game with a scoring flourish, being 14 shots up in the early stages. But when the game was finally halted it was Newtown, who emerged

After 10 ends the deficit had been reduced and the score was ‘peeled’ at 8-8.

Over the concluding part of this hard-fought and thrilling final, McClure and Upton added 1, 2 to their tally to secure a win by 11 shots to 8.

In the second leg of the annual home and away fixture between Wilton and Dudley, the visitors from Leith recorded a comfortable 88-65 win to regain the Aye Friends Trophy for the first time in 10 years by 39 shots on aggregate.

After seven of the 18 ends, the Edinburgh men led by 35 shots to 25. After a similar amount of ends had been completed 15 shots was the difference.

In another close game, it was Gala who inched away to win by five shots in the end. The final score was Hawick 74,Waverley 79. Top squad on the night for the Buccleuch Street side was skipped by W. Anderson.

Teri trio triumph at Morebattle ATHLETICS

Hawick athletes Glyn Desport, Alan Inglis and Matthew Newman all belong to different running schools.

At Morebattle Games on Saturday however, they were all in the same class. Top of the class. The Teri trio produced a win apiece on the ‘Tofts’ running track.

With wins at Kelso Games and Bridge of Allan Games already under his belt during the season, dynamic Desport came out on top in the 110 metres handicap.

From the Edinburghbased Graeme Armstrong stable, Desport booked a final spot thanks to heat

and cross tie wins in times of 12.07 seconds and 11.75 seconds from a mark of 8.5 metres.

In the final, which also included Hawick’s Corey Wilson (12.5m), the recent victor of the St Ronan’s Games 100 metres handicap, Desport did it all again by breaking the tape in 11.80 seconds.

Hawick High School teacher John Fleming of Kelso (12m) was second.

In what was the last Border Games meeting of the season, Alan Inglis (160m) came in first in the 800 metres handicap.

A member of the Alex Corbett School as well as Teviotdale Harriers, Inglis clocked a winning time of 1 minute 56.82 seconds.

Matthew Newman (25m), from Hawick Sprint Club and coached by Che Campbell,

triumphed in the youths’ one-lap handicap.

Prior to this success, the 13-year-old had emerged in the youths’ 90 metres handicap. Newman was pinned back a metre in his heat in the one-lap event for jumping the gun.

But the Hawick youngster still blitzed his way into the final by racing home in 33.70 seconds.

In the final Newman starred again through a splendid run from start to finish to hit the winning line in 33.01 seconds.

Hawick’s own Drew Bryson (60m) and David Hush (55m) were second and third in the one-lap handicap.

MINTO JUNIORS Minto Golf Club junior section had their annual outing to Dunbar.

The course is an Open Qualifier, and it proved to be a tough examination for the youngsters. Playing a true links course is excellent for developing their golfing skills, and it is a credit to Dunbar for allowing Minto to play over their quality course.

Prizes were awarded for both team and individual Stableford performances.

The best team comprised Richard Allott, Lily Towers and Owen Cranston.

Nearest the hole prize was won by Mully Bannerman.

In the individual competition, Lily Towers secured 2nd place with 32 points, but the winner with 34 points was Ross Nichol, the junior club champion.

Everybody concluded the day had been the highlight of the season.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, openers Gary and Ronan Alexander made a watchful start as they aimed to lay a solid platform for the rest of the innings.

They did exactly that before the former was run out for 14. Another key partnership came when Pierce Solley joined Ronan Alexander at the crease as they looked to increase the tempo as boundaries came easier to come by.

Hawick made it to the halfway point only one wicket down and in a very healthy position before Solley was stumped after adding 19.

Opener Alexander was the next man out when he was caught and bowled after contributing a solid 38.

Stuart Hair regularly found the boundary in his quickfire 37 as the visitors looked to cement a large total.

The match looked to be in the balance before two quick wickets from Pierce Solley looked to give Hawick a way back into the match.

Two key moments followed when opener Coates (57) was remarkably dismissed with luck on Hawick’s side as wicketkeeper Evan Alexander and Gary Alexander both got their hands on an edge before the ball ended in the hands of Allan Moffat which looked to be the stroke of luck the Teries deserved.

Ryan Johnston held his nerve at the death claiming one wicket in his two over spell whilst Solley took his fourth of the match meaning 11 runs were required from the final over.

Solley kept his cool and only two runs were added as Largo fell nine runs short of their target.

It was a poor performance from Hawick as they know they can play much better but importantly grabbed the 20 points and aim to improve before next Saturday’s clash away to league leaders Edinburgh Accies.

Youngsters Murray Wilson and Justin Tait held their nerve for a thrilling two-run win for the Gala/Hawick development side over Carlton 5s at Peffermill.

Carlton were favourites heading into the closing stages as the Edinburgh team required 23 runs from the final six overs to overtake the development side’s total of 122 for 9.

But Wilson and Tait restricted Carlton to 120 for 8 to ensure they secured a narrow victory.

Gala/Hawick won the toss and decided to bat, but were soon in trouble as Jake Pringle, Jamie Crooks, Declan Solley and Justin Tait all fell to Carlton’s young and talented bowling attack.

Kenny Paterson (43), Finlay Rutherford (17) and Harris Rutherford (10) slowly rebuilt the development side’s innings, with veterans Stevie Halls (20) and Doug Welsh (8 not out) ensuring the visitors had a competitive total to defend.

Like Gala/Hawick, Carlton struggled to score runs as Harris Rutherford (2 for 24) and Crooks (1 for 28) contained the hosts and took wickets at regular intervals.

Opening batsman Murray (46 not out) remained at the crease in the closing stages to give Carlton a good chance of winning, but Tait (0 for 31) and Wilson (2 for 14) held off the challenge.

Cricket girls enjoy a taste of softball action The Hawick and Wilton girls’ cricket team were invited to Stewart’s Melville in Edinburgh for a softball festival on Sunday.

Playing first, the Hawick girls played hosts Stewart’s Melville.

Hawick scored 238/1, while Stew-Mel made 223/2.

In the second game against Forth Valley, Hawick scored 270/1 against 237/2.

In the third and final game against Carlton, the Hawick girls posted a score of 280/1, while Calton made 228/2.

The Hawick team was Danica Murphy, Emma Rae, Madison Potts, Abigail Potts, Alyssa Jack and Kay Robertson.

uly and August are the hardest months of the season and this year has proved to be no different.

Williestruther has been exceptionally hard this year. The trout seem to have switched to the natural feeding of shrimps and snails in the loch, making it

difficult to temp them with anything artificial. The only consolation is that they pile on weight.

The fish that have been caught on either worm or power-bait are in excellent condition, with the heaviest being reported at 4.5lbs.

There have also been reports of a larger number of eels

being caught this season.

Acreknowe has also been trying the patience of anglers. There have been a large number of fish congregating at the top end of the loch for weeks, but proving almost impossible to catch. Most of them that have been caught have fallen to size 16 or 18 emergers. Small

buzzers have also accounted for a number of trout which again are in great condition with some well over 3lbs.

There have also been some nice trout caught on Barnes which have been taking mostly on dry flies.

Hawick Waverley were down to the bare bones of a squad for their opening Border Amateur League match of the season.

But the skeleton got on with the job in hand, rolled up their sleeves and came away with a point.

With new signings Conrad Campbell, Declan Leckie and Aaron Smith on parade, Waverley produced a solid, all-round performance.

Defender Davis Hope and goalkeeper Kerr Brown impressed for the Wilton Lodge Park side.

Brown pulled off the first of a string of fine saves in the opening minutes when touching a well-struck Jamie Milner shot onto the bar.

beat home keeper Sean Jack with a cracking free-kick only to see his effort cannon off the upright.

Minutes later a good onetwo passing move involving Newcastleton youngster Smith and Yardley ended in Smith being thwarted by an excellent Jack save.

Jed then hit the woodwork for a second time when a thundering Swailes free kick rebounded off the bar.

After a Leckie free-kick had been partially cleared, Greg Ford had a chance to break the deadlock but fired wide.

In the opening stages of the second half, Waverley launched an attack down the right which ended in Charlie Hope being fed by a low cross ball. The young Waverley striker was felled by a Kyle Finlayson shove, but referee John Blaikie dismissed appeals for a penalty.

After Brown had excelled in pulling off stops from Gillie and Chris Gillan in rapid succession, Smith had a shot kept out by Jack.

In a hectic finishing period which saw both teams go all out for that vital opening goal, Brown denied Legion of what would have been a last-gasp winner by diving to push out a Swailes shot.

Summing up his side’s showing, Waverley manager Mick Hope told The Hawick Paper: “We had five guys out and had only two players on the bench, one of them being a goalkeeper. So to get a draw at Jed was a good result for us.

“The boys dug in deep and did well considering they were up against a good Jed side. I was happy with a draw”.

We didn’t deserve to lose, insists Albert striker Morris Football round-up

A second-half Aidan Ferris hat-trick sent Hawick Royal Albert reeling to a 3-1 defeat away to BSC Glasgow in the Lowland League.

Although the Royalists took an early lead through Josh Morris, the home side scored in the 83rd and 87th minutes to collect all three points.

Mitchell both went close for Royalists after Morris opened the scoring. But six minutes into the second half Ferris equalised for BSC.

Goalscorer Morris said: “We were badly done by.

There was nothing in the game and we certainly didn’t deserve to lose by two goals.

Defeat was hard to take.

“We played well enough, but mistakes cost us goals.

Although it was our third defeat there is no need to press the panic button. We are a good side and we will get it right”.

In the Border Amateur League, Hawick Legion pulled off a remarkable 2-0 away to Coldstream victory

in their opening match of the season.

Four Hawick rugby players, Neil McColm, Ali Weir, Rory Scott and Mark Young, were all in the team line-up. Legion even lost three men, Mark Deans, Chay Caldwell and Jamie Dickson, during the first half through injury.

Playing into the wind, Legion took the lead with a 25-yard Callum Hope free kick. Mark Young grabbed the second when he broke through to round the Streamers keeper and score.

Hope said: “The rugby guys were just brilliant.

Every one of them did a great job. I didn’t fancy our chances before the game but how wrong was I. The entire side’s attitude was spot on.”

Hawick Legion Rovers started the season with a 5-1 win away to Kelso Amateurs.

Charlie Mitchell put Rovers in front with a welltaken opener and Louis Johnstone added a second before the interval when he danced his way out of two challenges before finding the

net. Although Kelso pulled a goal back, Mitchell went on to complete his hat-trick for the Teries. John Shankie was also on target.

New Rovers manager Alan Cambell said: “I couldn’t have asked for a better start.

It was a great team show.

“Things didn’t look good on Friday night. I was short of players. However, I managed to make three new signings in Andy King, Mark Fiddes and Euan Armstrong.

“They came in at the last minute and did a great job.

Overall, it was tremendous.”

Scott nets hat-trick as United get off to a flyer Hawick United 4 Gala Hotspur 1

Ross Scott grabbed a hattrick as Hawick United got their Border Amateur League season off to a flying start with a decisive win on Tuesday evening.

Knocking the ball about well and showing commitment and purpose in all departments, the Tangerines impressed, particularly in the second half.

On this showing the Wilton Lodge Park side have the makings of being a force to be reckoned with.

United had the edge in the opening half hour, and Scott had an effort kept out by Hotspur keeper Scott Crawford before Michael Moir squandered two scoring opportunities within minutes of each other.

Gala came close when an Allan Nicol shot whistled past the post. But with 33 minutes gone United took the lead. Crawford spilled a Kevin Strathdee shot and the ball broke to the feet of Daniel Bolton, who fired home.

Five minutes later United went further ahead when Scott finished off a fine move.

Within two minutes, Hotspur opened their account when Sean Pringle

produced the scoring touch.

United began the second period brightly and in the 53rd minute added to their tally. After latching onto a David Strathdee cross ball, Kevin Strathdee fed Scott who darted forward to find the net with a perfectly executed chipped shot.

Just after the kick off, United launched an attack which resulted in Scott being brought down by Crawford when attempting to round the keeper.

A penalty was awarded, but there was to be no joy for United as Kevin Strathdee’s spot-kick was saved by Crawford.

The town’s four amateur teams are looking forward with optimism rather than looking back on what was, generally, a miserable campaign last season.

Although Hawick United made their mark last season, there was more gloom than sunshine for Waverley, Legion and Legion Rovers.

Waverley just managed to escape relegation from the Border Amateur League top flight, but Legion did take the plunge from ‘B’ to the ‘A’ division and were relegated.

It was not much better for Legion Rovers either, as they finished deep in the lower half of division ‘C’.

Looking to the season ahead, Waverley manager Mick Hope told the Hawick Paper: “We dug ourselves into a big hole last season but

thankfully we managed to dig ourselves out of it.

“The players showed a lot of character in the last few games and it was this attitude that kept us from being relegated. Most of last season’s side have signed, but a few new bodies have been added to the squad.

“We have signed two Gala boys, Declan Leckie and Conrad Campbell, as well as Aaron Smith, who comes from Newcastleton, and I am sure these boys will do a job for us. Fitness is being worked on at the moment.

It’s a fresh start.”

The club’s longest-serving player Davie Fraser told us: “Dropping down a league was a big blow. We will need to recover from this by doing much better this season.

Royal Blues run out of steam in the final third Hawick Linden 14 North Berwick 38 In their first run-out of the new season, Hawick Linden took on old friends North Berwick at Wilton Lodge Park in a game contested over three 20-minute periods.

The Royal Blues put in an encouraging performance,

and led 14-12 going into the final period.

Linden’s tries came from Aiden Fairbairn, following a rumble near the line, and Graeme Anderson, both converted by Kieran Murphy.

However, the weight and experience of the visitors told in the end as they stretched away to a 38-14 win to claim the Johnny Mitchell Memorial Quaich.

Skipper Anderson tackled everything that moved, while the lineout worked well for the young home team and their scrum held up against a bigger pack.

Matthew Mallin had a fine game at flanker with Jordan White and Pete Drysdale also showing up well in the pack. Gavin Stirling had a solid game after switching to scrum-half.

Nasty neck injury overshadows promising start for new u-18 side The first fixture for the new Hawick U-18 Youth structure has already shown the benefits of Hawick PSA and Hawick Wanderers forging closer ties and training as one squad.

But although the PSA/ Wanderers Select beat Boroughmuir Colts by 55-5, the match was unfortunately overshadowed by a nasty neck injury to Angus Levell in the third period. The match was abandoned as a result.

A club spokesman told us “Happily, he is on the mend.

We all hope to see him up and about as soon as possible.”

The match itself proved to be a great advert for the new youth structure in the town, which appears to be bringing the best out of every player involved.

The hard work being put in by players and coaches was very evident.

PSA/Wands started brightly and, after some good work between forwards and backs, Logan Gordon Woolley dived over for a try.

Boroughmuir then took control and were awarded penalty after penalty, with PSA/Wands struggling at the breakdown. The constant Boroughmuir pressure resulted in a try.

PSA/Wands turned the screw in the second period.

The lineout was dominant, even if the scrum was creaking. But Ben Storrie was having a good game at No8, controlling the ball in the scrum.

This was done to great

effect, the Hawick back division starting to run riot, with Jae Linton to the fore.

Boroughmuir had no answer to this, and in the second period PSA/Wands scored four tries without reply.

Another one came from Ruaridh Macleod, with one each from Jordan Brockie, and Jae Linton.

falling off tackles in the third period. Jae Linton ran in for two tries and Andrew Mitchell rounded off the scoring by running in from 40 metres.

The stand out performer was Jae Linton, supported well by Aaran Redpath, Ben Storrie, and Shane Donnelly, but every player played his part it was an excellent team performance.

Albion take positives from last-gasp defeat Despite losing 33-26 to a big and physical Boroughmuir U-16 side at Wilton Lodge Park last Saturday, the Hawick Albion squad can take a lot of positives from the performances.

In perfect conditions, they caught Boroughmuir napping in the first few minutes when Rhys Tait crossed for a try. Bailey Donaldson added the extras.

Boroughmuir hit back almost immediately and then went ahead with a converted score. Minutes later they increased their lead with an unconverted try.

Hawick centre Mully Bannerman looked dangerous, continually testing the opposition defence with slick running and probing kicks, one of which led to a Boroughmuir player being asked to leave the field by the referee after a deliberate block.

The half ended with Boroughmuir 19 - 7 ahead.

At half time Albion players Mully Bannerman and Andrew Mitchell moved over for some game time with the u-18s, who were playing on the adjacent pitch.

Despite losing two influential players, the remaining senior players, Paul Brunton, Bailey Donaldson, Nathan Murray and Aaron Fletcher, led by example.

Albion were first on the score sheet in the second half when Donaldson touched down and then brilliantly converted from the touchline.

But a soft interception try let Boroughmuir off the hook. The conversion restored the away team’s 12-point lead.

Albion heads did not drop and the deficit was reduced when prop Aaron Fletcher crashed over the try-line. Donaldson split the uprights with a lovely touch-line conversion.

Albion levelled when Brodie Graham sneaked in at the corner after the ball had been moved through the backs from a scrum.

With the scores level at 26-26, a draw would probably have been a fair result. But, the Albion allowed Boroughmuir to make one final attack. From a scrum they were able to crash over and score.

Hawick shunned the easy option of playing against junior opposition in their first pre-season match and instead took on the might of English national one professional side, Darlington, at Mansfield Park last Friday.

In the event, the north of England outfit won 33-14 but the scoreline meant little.

What mattered was that Hawick showed an ability to front up against professional players despite being below full strength.

Missing from the Hawick side against Darlington were their inspirational standoff Rory Hutton and centres Graham Hogg and John Coutts. Mercurial runner Hutton sustained a hand injury at the Peebles Sevens and is likely to out of the game for some time.

“Rory dislocated a tendon from his hand. He had an operation [last week] and he’ll be out for the best part of the first quarter of the season,” explained Hawick’s head coach, Nikki Walker, adding : “That’s a big blow for us because he’s such an experienced player and he’s our vice-captain. But I think we showed against Darlington that we’ve got young players who can step in. We’ll work hard with the players we’ve got.

position, and especially his kicking both from hand and from the tee, Hawick can feel reasonably assured that they have a competent replacement.

“I think Kirk had a great game at ten. It’s his first game for Hawick firsts. He played a lot for the seconds last year.

He did a great job tonight.

We’ll work with him for the next few weeks. If he carries on playing like that he’ll have a good shout at holding on to the jersey,” stated Walker.

Outside Ford, centres Kyle Brunton and Gary Johnston, defended well against a hard running Darlington midfield containing the former Gala player, Chris Auld. Sadly Hawick’s backs were limited to a defensive role which meant that Hawick’s Scotland under-20 cap Darcy Graham had no opportunity to show his attacking flair.

Elsewhere, behind the scrum Neil McColm, returning to Mansfield Park after a stay in Canada, looked ready for the fray, and at scrum-half Greg Cottrell, who was on the park for the entire game, was his accustomed industrious self.

If Hawick had few replacement options behind the scrum then the opposite was true in the forwards.

And it is here that the scrap for places is likely to be keenest.

“There’s going to be a lot of competition in the forwards.

We’ve been hit in the backs by injury and absences but hopefully when we play Stirling first Premiership game we’ll have most of the boys back. Forwards-wise there are going to be a few headaches in selection.

I thought a number of guys stuck their hands up tonight,” suggested Walker.

Among the forwards who showed up well against Darlington were Dalton Redpath, former Preston Lodge back row Andrew Horne and number 8 Shaun Fairbairn, who has figured for Hawick in sevens.

Hawick also have a bit of depth in the front row.

Shaun Muir and Scotland under-20 hooker Fraser Renwick put in solid shifts,

but Walker can now add into the mix the former Gala hooker Calum McIntosh, who while at Netherdale showed himself to be a useful tighthead prop.

Another to perform well in the second half was Terry Skeet, but the bulky former rugby league player may have to work harder on his fitness to command a regular slot in the Greens line-up.

Walker, however, may still have a few more cards to play with the possible arrival of several more players to Mansfield Park.

He said : “I can’t really confirm new signings at the moment. There are still a couple of things to be tied up. But hopefully they’ll be three, four, maybe five new faces at the beginning of the season. Possibly two overseas players and the others Scottish based.”

Quins impress with 10 tries in their first game of pre-season The Harlequins started their new campaign on a high after running out victors 64-7 against a poor Liberton RFC in a friendly.

Coach Gary Murdie was extremely pleased with the result and performance.

“Basically we got off to a great start and never looked back,” he said. “Scoring 10 tries in your first preseason match after the summer break is something to be proud of.”

After a good pre-season, the Quins took no time at all in scoring the first points of the game. From the back of a scrum on the 5m line simple handling was enough to see Ross Lothian score in the corner.

Almost straight away Quins scored again, but this time through Graeme Lothian, with Gav Douglas adding the conversion.

The Baker Street men were getting into gear as Liam Nichol broke through and sailed under the posts for the third. Douglas again added the extras.

Next on the scoresheet was Adam Hall as he dusted off the cobwebs after his recent lads’ holiday by turning on the burners and scoring a cracking try.

Douglas added the extra two points once again.

Just before half time Steven Mabon popped up for a try on his debut and proved he is an acquisition worth shouting about as he skipped through the defence and under the post.

Douglas added the extra once again to give the Quins a 33-0 lead at half time.

a try which he converted.

Hall added a second try to his name to prove the extra poundage he was carrying was no more than for show after he side stepped his way from the halfway line for which was try of the afternoon. Peffers missed the conversion.

The Quins were in fine fettle and after some slick offloads Jordan Hyslop bashed over to score the eighth try, which Peffers converted.

The Liberton lads deserve credit for sticking to it and their hard work paid off as they scored a consolation try which was converted from out wide by the big No 3.

The Quins weren’t done there with another two tries through vice-captain Gary Rodgerson and hooker Finlay Robb, one of which was converted by Peffers.

With five minutes left on the clock the ref blew up and the Quins won 64-7.

Quins take on Borders rivals Earlston this weekend.

Bruce makes it three wins in four races

Bruce Lynn has just become the latest Hawick jockey to experience the delights of the winners’ enclosure.

Having won his first race earlier this month at Musselburgh saddling Stoneham and his second scalp last Friday at Catterick on board Neuf Des Coeurs, the 16-year-old claimed his third winner out of four races on Wednesday by piloting Ceaser the Geaser to success in the 2:10 at Carlisle.

The former Drumlanrig Primary School pupil is being taught by fellow Teri Iain Jardine at his horse racing yard in Dumfries.

Commenting on his rookie win, Bruce said: “When I rode through the line for the first time at Musselburgh it was an exhilarating experience. It was a combination of nerves and excitement, but I was also chuffed to begin to repay the faith that Scobie (Iain) has shown in me.”

Bruce was identified by the British Racing School as ‘having the potential to succeed’ last summer when he was one of just ten UK apprentice jockeys to participate in the Advanced Pony Racing Jockey Training week.

He enjoyed intensive training with senior jockey coach Richard Persham as well as Olympic coach Yogi Breisner. He certainly earned great plaudits and caught the eye to earn the ‘Outstanding Performance’ title. He was also identified at the Pony Racing Awards last November when he was presented with an award in the graduate section.

Bruce, son of Lynne Gilchrist and Richard Lynn, began riding when he was just five through the Pony Club.

Greens eye two new signings Hawick continue their preparations for next weekend’s Premiership opener by travelling south to face Tynedale tomorrow.

Greens head coach Nikki Walker is hoping to bolster his squad by bringing in two new signings from overseas before the league campaign begins next weekend away to Stirling County.

But assistant coach Scott MacLeod has been impressed by what he has seen from the current squad during pre-season training and in last weekend’s defeat to English professional opponents Darlington.

“We want to build on last week, when we played

really well for 60 minutes,” said MacLeod.

“Our scrummaging and set pieces were tremendous last week. We need to do that consistently.

“We will continue to work on executing our team structures at Tynedale.

“We are not the biggest team, but we can still be physical. Having a big heart

is the important thing. We want that ethos in the team.

We want playing for Hawick to really mean something.

“If we don’t have the bulk, we want to make sure we play with heart and that our skillset is superior to our opponents.”

After missing out last week, John Coutts and Grant Huggan return to the squad tomorrow to stake their claim for a place in the starting XV. Walker is set to confirm the identity of the pro players drafted to Hawick from Edinburgh, and the arrival of two new signings in the coming days. “There are just a couple of things to be tied up,” he said.

Easton makes mid-season team switch Hawick superbike rider Stuart Easton has switched teams midway through the season, but says he is excited about the change.

He will join forces with the Lloyds British MotoRapido Ducati team for next week’s Cadwell Park round of the MCE British Superbike championship after a flurry of mid-season rider changes.

He added: “I really try to model myself on him, he is quite tall like me and has a unique way of pushing his ride forward.

“My eyes are very much wide open and I am still trying to absorb as much information as I can. Every day I pick up new tips and pointers doing a job that I love.”

Hawick Minis rugby training starts for the new season at Wilton Lodge Park this Sunday, with boys and girls of primary school age invited to attend.

Registration will be held at the green hut at top of the park from 10am, with training running from 10:30am to 11:30am.

Club president David Oliver said: “All boys and girls of primary school age are more than welcome to come along and give it a try. It is all about having fun.”

Registration costs £10 for Primary 3 to 7 pupils and £2 for boys and girls in Primary 1 and 2.

National Superstock 1000 championship, Easton’s plans for the rest of the year changed when the MotoRapido team and Danny Buchan went their separate ways last week.

Reuniting with the manufacturer with whom he won his first British Supersport title, Easton will test with the Ducati team at Cadwell Park this week before the eighth round of the championship kicks off next Saturday.

“I haven’t been this excited for a long time,” said

Easton. “It all happened pretty quickly.”

The last time Easton raced a Ducati was in 2004, but a lot has changed with it since then.

He added: “There is certainly a lot to look forward to and I can’t wait to get the second half of my season started.”
