In the tent awaiting the start of the races at the PAISAA Championships, a runner from another school said, “Our sport is other sports’ punishment.” Co-Captain and Sixth Former Anthony Calvelli disagrees. He loves running. He runs all three seasons and almost every day of the summer. Calvelli only takes three weeks off of running the entire year, one after cross country and two after spring track. This is his final season as a Ford, and it has been one to remember. Calvelli came to The Haverford School in Sixth Grade but didn’t start running cross country until Form II. He has never considered himself a fantastic runner, and he never had a particularly remarkable middle school mile time. He claims that he did not love cross country right away; Calvelli showed up for practice and, like middle school, found it very difficult. But after the first race of that season, he knew he had found his sport. His first year of high school cross country was the last year in a long streak of losses on EA Day, and Calvelli was Haverford’s fourth runner on that team, which is a testament to his speed and the team’s overall skill level that year. Things were on the rise for the Haverford cross country team his Form II year, with a good group of Third Formers and only one Sixth Former graduating. The next year the losing streak ended, and the team beat EA by one point. Calvelli was a Fifth Formers when they beat EA again, and he’s hoping to do so again this year. We all know that to be a student at The Haverford School is challenging. Calvelli said that moving from middle school to high school was difficult because he had to adjust to “being the small fish in a big pond” and that he was “at the low end of everything.” He used cross

country to help him transition into the high school. The sport introduced him to some of older students who helped him find his place in the larger pond. Calvelli’s advice to Third Formers is to “get involved right at the beginning of your Third Form year. Join the Fall sports team because that is a great way to get to know other kids if you are coming from a different school. Third Form is a great time to try out a lot of different things.” When asked how he balanced his sports and academics at Haverford, he said, “It has been really tough, balancing the two, honestly. I get home from practice at about 6 p.m. and then, with my difficult course load, I probably have three-tofour hours of homework per night. Every night when I am doing my homework I think, ‘I need to get to sleep,’ or it is not going to be good for my running. That really motivates me to finish my work as fast as I can because I know that I need to get sleep. It doesn’t always happen, but I have made it work so far.” As to whether he will run in college, Calvelli said “I really hope to, but I’m not fast enough to be recruited.” He is planning to attempt to walk on a team wherever he ends up going to college. If he does not make the team, he will join the college marathon team. This will be Calvelli’s final EA Day and final cross country race at Haverford. “[This last race] means everything. It is so special, but it is also sad at the same time. It is amazing that it is going to be at home this year in front of hundreds of people - hundreds of my brothers. There is nothing like running on EA Day at home in front of everyone. The adrenaline rush is unreal. I am a pretty quiet guy and this means so much to be able to perform on such a big stage in front of everyone one last time.”
