Students, administration wrestle over fan behavior Nick Chimicles ’19

A parade of ugly Christmas sweaters marches from the locker room, past the weight room, up the stairs, and into McBride Court. The festive mass settles in its home

on the near-side bleachers. It is Friday night, “Silent Night,” and our sweatered gentlemen lie anxious for the tenth point like one dormant volcano.

Fourth Former Tyler Seward steps up to the free throw line with nine points on the board. He bounces the ball twice, then flicks it into the air. The ball hangs above the players, all

Chef Henry Ruffin serves up more than delicious omelettes and pancakes. He also creates a lively dining experience from the first breakfast sandwich through the last blackjack chicken. Chef Henry embodies the goals of the dining hall staff, “nurturing the minds and bodies of the students at Haverford.” “It’s no big secret. I love working here,” said Chef Henry. “I love coming here and spending my time with the fellas.” The feeling is mutual. Nearly all students

and faculty who wait in long lines for his daily dishes agree that Chef Henry makes Haverford a better place. Fifth Former Daniel Chow said, “He’s a great example of how warm and friendly the community is at Haverford.” Hungry Haverford students aren’t always the most patient, waiting in 20-minute lunch lines, but “Chef Henry makes the lunch line a lot more bearable,” Chow said. cont. pg. 19

Connor Devine ’19 reflects on the Poetry Slam pg. 18

So far this year, chess has taken the Upper School community by storm. If you ever go to “The Street” during any block of the day, you will most likely see Haverford students sitting down for a quick game of chess. Chess, while always having a small presence at the school, has not been this popular recently and certainly was not a fixture of The Street. Dean of Students Mr. Mark Fifer said, “I don’t know [how it grew. It is] possibly from the Big Room, or from previous chess clubs.”

However, unlike some other trends, Mr. Fifer calls the exponential growth of chess “exceedingly positive” and a “great use of downtime.” Chess is a phenomenon which has grown to great heights. As the newest trend in the community has been received positively by all, the game of chess and The Street have now become a second community room, where students battle with their minds instead of their athletic prowess at the ping pong table.
