Inaugural Symposium Showcases Student Research Harker’s inaugural Science, Engineering, Technology & Mathematics Symposium was a tremendous success, with more than 200 students, faculty and professionals from various scientific fields in attendance. The event, which was themed “Building a Community of Researchers,” featured more than 20 original research presentations from current Harker students, demonstrating the rapid success and progress of Harker’s burgeoning scientific research program. Student presentation topics included cross-linked conjugate polymers, the economics of stem cell research, gene therapy of cystic fibrosis, and hydrogen production efficiency. One goal of the symposium – which included three speaker sessions featuring several simultaneous presentations, as well as a breakfast speaker and a keynote address – was to provide a venue where Harker students could share their research with fellow students. “I had noticed that for so many years, our students were engaging in research at world-class facilities throughout the world, and yet, they were graduating without having shared their experiences with their peers,” said Anita Chetty, US science department chair. “Most of the symposium presenters were seniors who had conducted research during summer internships, and before they graduated, they helped set the stage for their younger classmates.”

The event proved to be an invaluable networking environment for Harker students seeking to establish mentoring relationships with research professionals to facilitate future research projects. Said Chetty, “Harker gained a tremendous amount from this event, and the ripple effect has already begun, with students hopefully finding mentors for future research.” Another highlight of the event was the WiSTEM (Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) roundtable discussion, which partnered
students from Harker’s chapter of WiSTEM and San Jose’s Eastside Union High School District with undergraduates, graduate students, teachers and college professors to discuss college and career opportunities. Event organizers Chetty and US physics teacher Dan Matthews believe the professional and wellrounded nature of the symposium brought much-deserved attention to Harker’s student researchers. “We are on our way to putting a banner out there that Harker is more than a school that excels at standardized tests,” Chetty said. “It is my hope that we will become nationally recognized as a school that instructs and engages our students in legitimate research.” Chetty and Matthews thanked the Harker administration, Office of Communications, kitchen staff, facilities department, administrative assistants Chris Collins and Fred Keller, and the entire Harker community for helping to make this first-of-its-kind event possible. Said Chetty, “This was truly a Harker event, bringing together individuals from various parts of our community, and that is why it was so successful.”
Guest presenters at the event included researchers from NASA Ames Research Center, Stanford University and UC Berkeley, as well as representatives from corporations including Intel Corp., Modular Process Technology Corp., Corgentech Inc. and Applied Signal Technology Inc. Another corporate sponsor was Marvell Technology Group, founded Harker News — June 06
