Sometimes, the best classroom isn’t a room at all. The Black Dolphin – a classic 50-foot wood ketch – is quite literally, an outdoor classroom for adventures in science, math, social studies, literacy, art, music and other areas of the curriculum.
The Black Dolphin Program At The Harbour School, marine sciences are taught from Pre-K to Grade 12 as an integral component of the curriculum. We believe that learning can be that much more engaging, fulfilling and enriching by experiencing lessons in the outdoors instead of simply taking notes behind a desk in a classroom. While many sail programs teach sailing and others focus on character traits and team building, ours is a marine science and sailing curriculum that focuses primarily on education and research. Students learn leadership skills such as collaborative problem-solving, teamwork, resilience and self-reliance.

Welcome to The Harbour School
At THS, we not only adjust instruction based on students’ academic strengths and weaknesses, but also promote individual interests through structured independent projects. We ensure students at all levels are challenged to think critically and use a hands-on, problem-solving approach. This requires careful planning, monitoring, assessing and recording of student needs, strengths and interests. Any difficulties are identified and supported. Academically advanced students receive learning extension. Learning is consistently reinforced through experiential and active learning methods. Minimal homework is expected until Middle and High School where homework is completed in class under supervision.
Personal Approach To Learning
We have an accomplished and diverse faculty from 18 countries who are passionate about the subject areas they teach and have globally recognised qualifications and training. We have specialist teachers, academic professors and field experts in marine biology, history, chemistry, engineering, sailing, Mandarin, music, P.E. and sports.
High-Quality Teaching
In addition to a structured approach to math, reading and writing, we use an experiential approach in areas such as science, history and the arts. Children at THS are active, learning through experimentation, project work, discussion or action. We also customize instruction for each child’s abilities and skills. We do this by maintaining a high ratio of teachers to students, enabling teachers to work in small groups to ensure students are working at their optimal level. Technology is also used throughout the curriculum to help students learn, communicate or produce at their highest level.
Experiential Learning
A MESSAGE FROM FOUNDING HEAD OF SCHOOL, DR. JADIS BLURTON.
The Harbour School is a Pre-K to Grade 12 international school in Hong Kong that recognizes children as complex individuals with differing needs, goals, personalities, and backgrounds and thus takes a personal approach to learning. This year, we celebrate 10 years of progressive education in Hong Kong, emphasizing skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, innovation and resilience. We offer a U.S. common core curriculum that is adapted to ensure learning success for a diverse, international population.
"We are committed to unlocking the best in every student, encouraging students to find and develop their areas of strength." THS is a model for providing 21st century education for typical, advanced and gifted children while also providing support to students with areas of weakness. We have created an environment that provides a comprehensive, integrated education building on a strong foundation of core skills. Our students develop a global cultural literacy in science, history, technology and the arts in an atmosphere of kindness, flexibility, respect and individualism.
