issue, Bingara MPS have recently adopted the services of My Emergency Doctor as a pilot site for Hunter New England. It is a virtual care service, proving both successful and popular with patients and care providers alike. In much the same manner as being treated by a VMO onsite, a patient will arrive at the MPS and are assessed by nursing staff before being seen by the doctor. Based in Australia and staffed by Emergency Specialists, the doctor will speak with and treat the patient as though they were in the same room.
Further, the establishment of the position will afford nurses a potential career path that may enable them to live rurally and still continue to perform clinical duties alongside management functions. It is also hoped that it will assist in attracting and retaining nurses in the profession.
Given the seemingly dire forecasts to have come out of the recent Job Summit in terms of a shortfall of available labour in sectors such as Health, incentives such as the creation of new roles like Nurse Practitioner to attract local young people and immigrants alike will be a boon to towns like Bingara and Warialda. Further incentives such as monetary payments to assist with filling hard-tofill positions can also now be offered. These can be used towards relocation costs, housing expenses or providing access to further
It is imperative to note that access to local doctors 24/7 currently in small towns as found in the Gwydir Shire is untenable. Doctors need to be attracted to positions in smaller rural towns safe in the knowledge that they can enjoy the area and what it offers in terms of lifestyle and also afford them time off from their professional Tocommitment.addressthis

Care and Career: Best of Both Worlds with Nurse Practitioner
Bingara Multi-Purpose Service and the greater Gwydir Shire community have welcomed the appointment of Sue Mack as Nurse Practitioner. This newly-created role brings the best of both worlds to the nursing table - the opportunity to continue to be involved in the clinical care of patients, whilst also offering a career path that doesn’t necessitate a move to larger regional towns or to a city.
As extensions to regular Registered Nurse roles and responsibilities, Sue is able to undertake more advanced assessments, devise treatment plans, prescribe medications, order diagnostic imaging, perform suturing, apply back slabs and perform radiographer diagnoses. Referrals to third parties such as Allied Health and physiotherapists are also part of the position’s roles.
the requisite minimum 5 years experience in a Registered Nursing role, Sue undertook her Master’s degree which she completed in 2020, then commenced as a Nurse Practitioner in 2021. The role suits a professional who is able to work autonomously utilising more advanced nursing skills.
Sue is quick to point out that the appointment of a Nurse Practitioner in no way takes away the need for doctors as part of the multi-disciplinary team. Support of both nursing staff and doctors is paramount in the role of Nurse Practitioner. All facilities in the Hunter New England area will eventually have at least one Nurse Practitioner employed.

While the season is favourable for agriculture, it has been playing havoc with the roads program. The extended wet has slowed progress with flood repair and the other grant funded projects. The I.B. On the bright side we have had successful meetings with Moree Shire Council which has indicated a willingness to seal the three kilometres of the I.B. Mr Bernard said water licences in NSW were worth almost $30 billion and meters are the best way to protect this asset on behalf of the people of NSW and the environment. “We understand some water users are grappling with challenges, but we expect everyone to have made a reasonable effort to comply by their deadline,” Mr Bernard ex plained. “Our expectation is that water users will have at least a formal agreement or contract with a certified meter installer. The toolkit includes resources to help you host an event or get-together, including videos from Dementia Australia Patron Ita Buttrose AC OBE, Dementia Australia Honorary Medical Advisor Associate Professor Michael Woodward AM and Dementia Australia Ambassador Takaya Honda, informational slides, conversation starters and more.
To help people and groups provide this support and make a difference in the lives of people living with dementia in their community, Dementia Australia has produced an easy-to-download events and activities toolkit.
Young carers are children and young people, 25 years or under, who help to support a family member or friend living with a disability, mental illness, drug or alcohol dependency, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail.
Every caring situation is different, and the word ‘carer’ can be confusing. Young carers are daughters, sons, brothers, sisters, granddaughters, grandsons, nieces, nephews, cousins and even friends!

Myra Hamilton is a senior research fellow at UNSW’s Social Policy Research Centre, and she says that caring duties have a “mixed impact” on young people.
The Carers NSW Young Carer Program was developed to make a positive difference to the lives of these young carers and their families. If you are a young carer, this is a free service that can support you!
According to Carers Australia, there are approximately 272,000 young carers across the country.
Dr Hamilton says that young carers reported physical and emotional tiredness, less daily homework completion, and less participation in recreational activities.
Each year the program also offers scholarships to support young carers to continue their education. The program offers 1000 bursaries of $3000 each year to assist with education needs and resources.
The Carer Gateway also offers assistance to young carers and their families by way of advice, services, support and respite. Please contact them on 1800 422 737 to register.
Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM said the toolkit was a valuable resource for anyone who wanted to support people living with dementia in their community.
Events can be hosted in-person or online using the toolkit resources depending on the COVID-19 guidelines in place.
Download the toolkit here: running-an-event/discrimination.dementia.org.au/tips-for-https://
A free events toolkit to enable community groups, workplaces and individuals show their support for people living with dementia during Dementia Action Week is now available.

fire danger ratings are determined by the Fire Behaviour Index – a simple numerical scale that can be used consistently across Australia. The Fire Behaviour Index runs from 0 to 100 and beyond, with increasingly high values to indicate dangerous fire behaviour and therefore fire danger risk.

One of Australia’s largest social research projects was undertaken during the development of the Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS) to inform its design. The new system delivers clearer and –for the first time – nationally consistent fire danger ratings.
The AFDRS is a project of national significance developed collaboratively by all states and territories, and the Australian MoreGovernment.information about the AFDRS is available online at: www. firedangerratings.com.au

A new and nationally consistent bushfire danger rating system starts across Australia on 1 September 2022, providing clearer and more accurate information to communities at risk of bushfire. The Australian Fire Danger Rating System brings together the latest science and knowledge of fire behaviour, and is supported by extensive community research. It is the most significant change to the fire danger rating system in more than 50 years.
The AFDRS calculates fire danger at a finer geographic scale than ever before.

The Victorian initiative combines a scholarship payment of up to $16,500 to cover three years of full-time study and will be offset by two years of work in the Victorian public health service, so that across the five-year program, training will be free. “This is a practical way to attract more recruits into this profession as well as opening a pathway to those for whom financial restrictions have made a degree and career in nurs ing unattainable,” Mr Marshall said.
“This includes scholarships of up to $10,000 for postgraduate nurses to complete specialty studies, $11,000 scholarships for enrolled nurses to become registered nurses, $12,000 scholarships to support training and employment of 100 new Nurse Practitioners.
“Today I’ve written to the Minister for Health and Minister for Regional Health requesting the same offer be put on the table for aspiring nurses and midwives to train here in NSW,” Mr Marshall said. “The fact that a government of a different political persuasion in another State has developed and announced it should be no barrier to implementing the same good public policy here in NSW, as quickly as possible.

“It could be a real game-changer for the nursing and midwifery profes sions, helping to attract more school leavers and mature-aged students looking for a career change. Given this new policy has bi-partisan support in Victoria, no matter who wins the November election down there, it be in place from next year. I fear that if we don’t do the same here in NSW, we risk losing thousands of potential future NSW nurses and midwives to Victoria forever.”
Authorised Marshall MP, Member for Northern Tablelands. Funded using parliamentary entitlements.
NORTHERN Tablelands MP Adam Marshall has recently called on the State Government to follow its Victorian counterparts lead and urgently step in to make university studies for new nurses and midwives feefree. The Victorian initiative was announced in August, to bi-partisan support, and Mr Marshall said that it was vital the NSW Government also offered the support to ensure the upskilling of the nursing work force and prevent a ‘brain-drain’ into the neighbouring state.

The magic in ‘The Day of the Jackal’ is its non-stop reflection of the assassin and his pursuers travelling across Europe to fatally engage at their common destination, The Arc de Triomphe, in Paris, France.
The plot reflects a troubled time in European history. On 22 August 1962, the militant underground organisation OAS, infuriated by the French government granting independence to Algeria, attempt to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle. The assassination attempt fails,
Want to see a thriller? Here’s one that is a classic. ‘The Day of the Jackal’ by Frederick Forsyth was first released as a novel in the early 1970s. It remains in print today and is one of the great novels of the 20th Century.

A 1973 review of “Day of the Jackal” in its year of release said, “It is not a great film, but it’s a damn good one, one of the very few films released this year that is worth all the trouble and expense of going out to the movies.” Director Fred Zinnemann, scripter Kenneth Ross, and editor Ralph Kemplen (earning this film’s sole Oscar nomination) all deserve high marks, and it is not surprising that it received an Oscar nomination for editing, the relentless pace of the film is one of its enduring legacies.

The film ‘The Day of the Jackal’ was released in 1973, directed by Fred Zinnemann and starring Edward Fox as The Jackal, Michael Lonsdale as Lebel, and Derek Jacobi as Caron. It follows the novel rather faithfully although it has several cosmetic changes.

OAS leaders, now hiding in Austria, plan another attempt, and hire a British assassin, who goes by the code name, “Jackal”, for $500,000. The Jackal travels to Genoa and commissions a custom-made rifle from a gunsmith, and fake identity papers from a forger. In Paris, the Jackal duplicates a key to a flat overlooking the Place du 18 juin 1940.

Students started with a random population structure and then drew cards with a variety of scenarios representing a range of ‘push’ and
‘pull’ factors that influence populations. They quickly noticed their population structure changing as they lost (ate) and gained (got more lollies from the central pot) citizens based on factors such as conflict, flu epidemics, seeking refuge, education, natural disasters, etc. The classroom was full of rich discussions, demonstrating a high level of understanding of such a key concept, while also having fun!
Stage 5 Geography have recently started the Changing Places module. During this module students examine the patterns and trends in population movements and the increasing urbanisation of countries. They discuss the reasons for internal and international migration patterns and the consequences of population movements, including the increased concentration of populations within countries. On Friday, students completed a Population M&Ms game, with the intention of the lesson being to understand how population change is influenced by a variety of factors.

He was very supportive of the Bingara Jockey Club and held several positions over many years of being involved as a member. We have lost a great club stalwart. On a brighter note, we still have his wonderful wife Gay who as a patron will continue to guide us into the future.
