“We have tried to create a place that is welcoming for everybody,” said Mr Hardcastle.

An idea over a couple of beers to reinvigorate a town led to the opening of The Vicarage Café at North Star last month with a huge crowd of over 300 people coming from across the district. Local men and co-owners James Hardcastle and Simon Doolin pulled everything together for a wildly successful evening featuring fabulous food, company and entertainment. With two buses coming from Goondiwindi and the support of locals the opening continued long into the night with a jumping castle, music from band Split Image. “We had a really, really fun night with fireworks and the band. We were very excited to kick the doors open like that and we hope we continue to get support,” said Mr Hardcastle. The concept was first bandied about in May last year when in August the pair set on the path to opening. James says they have created the space for the people and the town. “Simon just asked me and said, let’s open a café. I kept saying no until he wore me down. I said yes and we haven’t looked back.” “We hope to appeal to everyone; mums, caravaner’s, grey nomads, locals and those

travelling through. The Café, as its name suggests, is housed in an old building, which was once a Masonic Lodge, before it became a Church of England Vicarage. The building was available and seemed like the perfect place to bring the concept to reality. Enjoying a new lease of life, it is easy to see why. The site was ideal not only inside but also out. The grounds have been brought back to life with gardens lovingly tendered and reinvigorated over the past few months. Outdoor seating provides a relaxed setting to enjoy coffee, breakfast or lunch. The Vicarage Café also stocks goods such as Louhenhide handbags, jams and salad dressings, hats and work shirts are for sale alongside the works of local artists including pottery from Yetman’s Angela Edwards.

“Call in for a Merlo coffee, lunch or a takewaway meal. We have quiches, salads and burgers ready to be enjoyed.” A great start to the season, opportunities with the Inland Rail Project commencing it’s Narrabri to North Star section and a population with community spirit sees North Star’s future looking bright. The Vicarage Café is open 7 days per week: 7:30am – 4pm Mon, Tues, Wed, 7:30am-7pm Thurs, 7:30am– 5pm Fri, 8am-2pm Sat and 9am- 2pm Sun. Follow the Vicarage Cafe on their Facebook page to keep up to date with what’s happening in their new hub.
