BASEBALL

The Grandview Greyhounds began the 2022-2023 season with a hot start, starting the season with a 4-0 record. The Greyhounds soon after lost their hot streak when faced up against the tough competition that the CWAC had to offer. Despite their setbacks and an under .500 record, the hounds rallied back. With postseason wins against Othello, Ephrata, and Shadle Park, the hounds punched a ticket to State which hadn’t been done since 1991. Backed by their fearless head coach, the hounds rallied their way to the State tournament, leaving a legacy that won’t be forgotten any time soon.

The Grandview Boys and Girls

Track team had a very successful off season having the most athletes ever in GHS history on the team

this season. With both last year’s state qualifiers Noe Medina and Levi Dorsett not being apart of the team this season, the slot for state qualifiers was wide open. Although having much success in the regular season with javelin team being a juggernaut of a group throughout the season and sprinters, Only one person ended up qualifying for state. And that was sophomore Titus Jeffrey, who qualified in shot put. Titus Jeffrey along with the throwing group would be ranked top 5 in shot put, and discus almost all season long. Overall the track team had a very superb season ending it with 8 all CWAC selections.

The Grandview Boys Soccer team has been a feared team over the past few years in the CWAC.

Under Head coach Adrian Morales the soccer program continues to thrive , being districts champions just 2 years ago, and making state just last year. Starting off the season hot with a 3-0 record , the Hounds began to hit a slump , but around the end of the season the Hounds began to pick up momentum and almost placed for state unfortunately losing in a must win game for seed #3 against selah. This ended the greyhounds unfortunately remarkable season.

TRACK SOCCER GOLF

The Greyhounds golf team has added alot new additions towards the group this season. With both the girls and guys team almost doubling in size , there was alot to look foward to this season. Travis Hoffard a junior, lit up the CWAC all season making the CWAC’S 1st team. He was the only golfer to qualify for state this season and it’ll be hosted later this week at liberty lake. Make sure to show support and good luck at state hoffard !!!

Intentional Fires?

In Grandview these past few weeks, there have been suspicious fires that seem to be targeted and non-accidental. On May 10, the town was shocked to see the bridge that has been there since 1938 up in flames. The black smoke was heavy and could be seen from miles away. The fire started at 5:20 p.m and wasn’t completely extinguished until 10:42 p.m. There was a lot of suspicion on how this fire started and if it was possible arson. The next fire took place on May 12th at approximately 12:25 pm. Many students that left for B lunch witnessed this fire first hand. As you can see in the picture to the left the car was parked and up in flames by the on the corner of West 5th and Velma Ave. This fire has been questioned to be arson and if it is linked with the first. With these two fires within a week of each other, there has been no person of suspect announced and worries of if there is more to come.

College Essay Example

College season is over for the class of 2023 and it’s time for class of 2024 to dive into college season application. It can be hard to start your college essays without knowing how to start or what to write about. This section is dedicated to help upcoming juniors get inspiration for their college essays -- or just provide a helpful example!

My Name. My Star.

I am me and I am myself. Thinking about the prospects of my future gives me a thrill, but it wasn’t always like that. Looking at my past I remember how helpless I felt. The helplessness that stemmed from a past of fear, worry, and loneliness. Although I’ve had a rough upbringing with insecurity and self identity, I can’t think of anything more exhilarating than being myself and pursuing a successful future. In elementary school, I lived with my two moms and my sister. To put it bluntly my family is somewhat dysfunctional, but we hang on. As I grew up, I realized my family was a little different. Although my neighbors in our agricultural community of Grandview, Washington are Latino like me, there is a disturbing structure within our culture that divides and criticizes anyone who is slightly different. For me, having two moms did not classify as a traditional all-American family. In middle school, I tried to leave my family and identity at home. I battled to fit into the norm of what was expected of men in my culture: men are supposed to be tough and non-emotional. It was constantly reinforced not only by my culture but by my immediate family. My sister had strong ideas of what a man was, and reminded me constantly what I had to be. “Men don’t listen to music from female artists” “Men should be working, not dancing around” “Men don’t cry”. Constantly hearing these and many more sexist remarks made me shy away from things that interested me. The adults in my household were working long hours in the fields, and it was common not to see them everyday leaving my sister in charge. As I realized I didn’t fit into the norms, I began hating my culture and I wanted to be someone else. My name. My star.

As I entered high school, I experienced turning points because I already hated being home. I spent hours every day after school at a local student center. I created great friendships in the clubs I was in, and these people became my second family, one where people understood and heard me, a family where I am proud to say I am Christian Sanchez. I am Latino. I am a performer. I am an athlete. I am different, I am me. I am not my sister, I am my star. Now, I will not let growing up with rough beliefs surrounding Latino households keep me from being my own person; maintaining a high GPA, taking rigorous college level classes, and my dedication to grow stood out as something no one could take from me.

With this new understanding of myself, I began to excel where my passions lie. I finally felt proud to participate in music, playing the lead in the school’s musical, on the varsity tennis team, and being a part of a local dance company, all while giving back to my community by volunteering at the Extra Mile Student Center. I want to follow these passions. I want to perform. I was one of 14 students statewide to be accepted into a rigorous college prep program, the Washington World Fellows. Part of the program included a study abroad trip to Spain, where I was able to improve my language and study the culture all while meeting new people. I also overcame the fear of being away from home and family and learned that the world is filled with endless possibilities and pathways. I intend to make use of every opportunity given to me to realize my potential and achieve my dreams. We all have a purpose and when I chose myself and decided not to listen to others, I realized that I’m capable and it led to discovering my passions. Now I see myself applying my growth and knowledge to be authentically myself. My Name. My Star.
