FOREWORD Graydon Sealy Secondary School is one of the twenty one (21) secondary schools in Barbados which caters to students of both sexes. At Graydon Sealy, we offer a diverse curriculum which is in keeping with our motto to develop all aspects of our growth. Our staff is committed and dedicated to the school’s philosophy which seeks to develop our students to their fullest potential so that they become productive and responsible citizens in order to enable them to exist in a global and ever-changing society. A collaborative and team approach is practiced at Graydon Sealy Secondary and we are of the firm opinion that this approach, which seeks to encourage the school, the home and the community to work together, is beneficial to the total development of our students. It is with God’s help that we intend never to lose sight of this mission. We aim to develop the total student and it is to this end that you, the students of Graydon Sealy, are encouraged to be involved in the total life of the school so that you too may join the list of proud graduates who continue to make invaluable contributions in every sector of our society. A SHORT HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL The school, then named Garrison Secondary School, officially received its first student intake on 06 January 1975. It was officially opened on 11 September 1975 by The Hon. Lloyd E. Sandiford, MP, the then Minister of Education. On 05 October 2012, the school was renamed Graydon Sealy Secondary School by the Honourable Freundel Stuart, QC, MP, Prime Minister of Barbados and the Honourable Ronald Jones, JP, MP, Minister of Education, Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development. The school was named after its first principal, Mr. Graydon C. Sealy, who served in that capacity from 06 January 1975 until 21 April 1989. Since then the school has had four principals. Graydon Sealy Secondary School is situated in Paddock Road, St. Michael, within the environs of the Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison. The world renowned race course, The Garrison Savannah, is a short distance from the school. Other land marks such as the Barbados Museum; the headquarters of the Barbados Defence Force, St. Ann’s Fort; The Hilton Barbados Resort; the headquarters of the Cadet Corps, Cherry Tree Cottage; The Barbados 7


Poppy League and Military Cemetery; The Clock Tower at the Garrison; and George Washington House are in close proximity to the school. It is also in the heart of a close knit and densely populated community and a number of well known south coast hotels and business houses are within easy access.

THE SCHOOL PLANT Graydon Sealy Secondary School is built in a “G� shaped formation. The school plant consists of 35 general classrooms, four (4) science laboratories, one (1) science lecture theatre, three (3) Home Economics rooms, one (1) needlecraft room, two (2) Arts and Craft room, one (1) Technical Drawing office, a large Industrial Arts workshop with an office and areas for Wood Work, Metal Work, Electronics, Graphics Arts, three (3) fully up to date Computer labs. In addition, there is one (1) library, a book room, a Foreign Language room, a Mathematics room, a Music room, a Remedial Studies Resource Room, a canteen and a lunch area. The school also has two hard courts on which the students hone their skills, quite successfully, in netball and basketball.

During physical

education they also utilize the small playing area to the east of the plant. There is an enclosed auditorium where functions are held and where the students are able to take their Physical Education classes in volleyball and badminton among other activities free from exposure to the elements. General assembly is also held in the auditorium. When the need arises the school also uses the nearby playground facilities afforded by the Garrison Savannah.

SCHOOL ORGANIZATION AND CURRICULUM The number of forms in the first year may vary from year to year depending on student allocation. For the 2019-2020 year there will be six forms in each level with the exception of the 5th Year, which will have seven forms. Students in the school are not streamed and promotion is not automatic.

Student progression from one level to the next is

dependent on student performance, attitude and aptitude. The school has a wide and varied curriculum and students may exercise choices by selecting from a number of options offered at the second, third and fourth year levels.

BUSINESS STUDIES: Office Administration, Principles of Business. Principles of Accounts, Information Technology, Electronic Document Preparation & Management (EDPM), Small Business Education. Students select a programme of study at the end of the third year to be followed at the fourth and fifth year when they write their Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examinations in order to be certified in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and/or Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) qualifications. The school is on track to be registered as a CVQ Centre. In addition, students are required to follow the CCSLC (CXC) programme from the first year. They then write the exams at the end of the third year level. A few students are given the opportunity to return to school after the 5 th Year to upgrade their results. They must enroll in our new “School to Work� Programme

and

CAPE

level subjects

which

include

Communication Studies, Tourism Management and Entrepreneurship. Students are selected for another year based on their conduct, their overall attitude to work and study and their willingness to adjust to the rules and regulations of the school.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Each student is expected to involve himself/herself in at least one (1) extra-curricular activity. This may be selected from the following: Cadets, Netball, Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Road Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, the Steel Orchestra, the Environmental Club, the Octagon Club/Debating Club, the Optimist Club, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, the Foreign Language Club, Film Garrison (Photography) etc.

Senior Teachers (Year Heads) There are five (5) Senior Teachers, usually referred to as Year Heads, attached to the school. Their duties, along with teaching in their subject areas, include the pastoral care, discipline and supervision of a specific group of forms. CORRESPONDENCE FROM PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ALL correspondence must be addressed to the Principal, but you may pass letters through the Form Teacher/Year Head/ Deputy Principal. Letters from parents or guardians MUST be submitted to the school. These letters MUST state, confirm or explain the reasons for the following:

1. Students’ absence from school 2. Students inability to do homework as a result of illness 3. Students’ permission to be excused from games or physical or other official school activities 4. Permission for students to bring medication to school 5. Permission for students to leave school premises during school hours (re funeral, medical appointment, etc)

THE SCHOOL DAY Assembly There is general assembly in the school hall twice a week. (Monday and Friday mornings) Year prayers conducted by the Year Heads, is held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Form Prayers conducted by the form teachers, is held on Wednesday mornings.

Attendance at morning assembly is compulsory unless special permission is granted to students to be exempted on religious grounds.

Such

exemptions must be applied for in writing to the Principal.

Absence from School If a student is absent from school for one (1) or more days without prior notice, a written excuse from the parent or guardian must be submitted in an envelope to the form teacher by the student at registration on his/her return to school.

Extended Absence from School In cases of prolonged absence (3 or more days) a medical certificate must be brought and must attest to the student’s fitness to return to school. In cases where a student is suffering from a communicable disease (measles, chicken pox, ring worms, etc) the pupil will not be allowed to attend school unless a medical certificate is submitted to the school upon the child’s return to school.

Exemption from Physical Education If a student is unable to participate in any activity during Physical Education lesson a letter and a medical certificate are mandatory.

Lateness Students who arrive late must sign a late book (after 9:15 a.m.) and then present a late slip to the teacher in charge.

Presence at School All students must remain within the school compound for the entire school day. Pupils wishing to leave school for lunch must obtain permission from the Principal or Deputy Principal. A letter requesting permission must be 25


brought from the parent or guardian. Special passes issued MUST be presented to the Security Guard at the gate when leaving/entering.

Leaving Class during Lessons Permission to leave classes during lessons must be obtained from the person in charge of the class. Students MUST obtain a pass from to the teacher in charge. If challenged, the student must be able to present the Leave Pass, indicating legitimate reason to be outside during class time. Additionally, students will not be permitted to leave the classroom during the first (1st) period, during period five (5) nor after 2:30 p.m. This will help to maintain order and school discipline during the school day.

Response to Bell Times There must be prompt obedience to bells at all times. For example: Students must stop playing and move towards the classroom at the sound of the first bell.

SCHOOL UNIFORM REGULATIONS 

The wearing of nail polish, make-up including lipstick, eye shadow and false lashes is not allowed.

Ties and epaulettes MUST be worn for the duration of the school day while traveling to and from school and while attending official school functions.

Male students MUST always wear their shirts neatly tucked into their pants and female students MUST have their blouses, which must not be tight, neatly inside their skirts at ALL times.

Female students only, are allowed to wear (1) one pair of earrings (silver or gold) which may be bobs or small sleepers and must be worn in the lower lobe. Rings in the cheeks, eyelids, nostrils, lips, tongue or other visible body parts are not allowed for either sex.

Junior girls’ overalls must be worn 2 ins. or 5 cms. below the knee and MUST not be tight.

Senior girls’ skirts must be worn at the waist, must extend at least 2 ins. or 5 cms. below the knee and MUST not be tight.

Female students must wear plain socks reaching 2ins or 5 cms above the ankle while junior boys’ socks MUST be worn mid-calf.

All male students MUST wear their pants/ trousers at the waist; they MUST not be oversized, baggy or tight around the legs and

ankles. The pants MUST be worn with a plain black leather belt with an ordinary, simple buckle head. 

Senior boys’ socks MUST be one solid colour of grey or black. No white nor brightly coloured or patterned socks are allowed.

All students must wear leather shoes with laces at the front. The wearing of sneakers, boots, high-cuts, pumps and soft-wear is prohibited.

Students must refrain from wearing brightly coloured clothing, vests or t-shirts with markings under their white shirts/blouses.

Braids, Weaves, Wigs, add-ons and other hair extensions are not allowed. There will be no exemptions from this rule.

Hairstyles worn by students must be suitable for school and must be simple, tidy, neat and unobtrusive (must not block the view of other students during class.) Hairstyles MUST not include any designs and/or cutouts.

Scarves are not allowed in school.

Visible tattoos are prohibited.

Physical Education uniform must be worn only on the school premises unless otherwise directed.

Tour Gear When going on school tours or field trips each student MUST be appropriately attired in the following gear:   

The correct House colour T-Shirt (purchased from the school) Long blue or black jeans. Sneakers or soft-wear.

There will be no deviation from the dress code outlined above and the rule for jewelry, hairstyles, etc. MUST be followed. Please be reminded that the house shirts are available from the school for $20.00.

STUDENT CONDUCT 1. Students must proceed to and from assembly in a quiet, orderly manner. All students are expected to participate in assembly. 2. Students must conduct themselves in a proper manner while in school and when on their way to and from school. This includes when walking on the street and traveling on buses. 3.

While wearing the uniform of Graydon Sealy Secondary School, it is an offence to loiter on the road, or outside shops, hotels, other business places or places of entertainment. It is also an offence (and unbecoming) to eat or drink while walking the street in uniform.

4. It is an offence to smoke, drink alcoholic beverages, gamble, use obscene and/or abusive language or be involved in illegal drugs either on the school premises or in public whether in school uniform or not. 5. At no time should students bring to school any of the following: Sharp-edged implements or weapons including scissors, razors, needles, knives, etc; guns of any type (including toy guns); radios 34


or any unauthorized musical equipment; cigarettes and any form of illegal drugs or substances (e.g. alcohol, marijuana, (ganja), cocaine, crack, (rock), ice or any other type; glass bottles and other such glass containers. 6. Students who use stones, rocks and/or any other objects as offensive weapons will be SEVERELY punished. 7. Students must queue at all times to obtain service; e g for the bus; at the canteen, etc. 8. Students must refrain from bringing and or chewing gum on the school compound.

WORK STUDY Students MUST apply themselves to their studies and MUST be on task during lessons and complete all assignments given. In addition, ALL homework assignments MUST be completed in the allocated time by the student. Where and for whatever reason this is not possible parents or guardians may send the appropriate letter of explanation. The assignment must still be submitted in the extra time given.

DAMAGE TO PROPERTY School buildings and school property MUST be cared for and not damaged or defaced. In cases where students damage, deface or lose property or equipment etc. the parent or guardian shall be given full responsibility for the repair or replacement of such property. A pupil who willfully damages or destroys school property or the property of any person lawfully on the school premises is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine of $500 or imprisonment for three months or both. (Whether he/she is under the age of 16 years, or if he/she is 16 years or older.)

IDENTIFICATION All articles of clothing including uniforms, shirts/blouses, Gym shorts and T-shirts and especially purses, wallets and watches must be clearly marked with the owner’s name. Clothing may be marked (inside/outside). Students’ names and forms should be clearly written on their text and exercise books which should not be marked with inappropriate letters/wordings/drawings/doodles, etc.

STUDENTS’ TELEPHONE CALLS AND MESSAGES Telephone calls should be made from the school office with permission from a member of staff and should be limited to emergencies. In the event that the office is closed (after normal school hours) there is access to telephones in the Guard Hut located at the front or back entrances to the school. Messages from parents/guardians must come via the office.

CELL PHONES Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed on the school compound. If a student is seen using any of these banned items, they will be confiscated and only returned to a parent/guardian at the end of the term.

NON-TEACHING STAFF The school’s very dedicated non-teaching staff is managed by the Secretary Treasurer (Mrs. V. Burgess-Howard). The team includes an Executive Officer (Ms. T. Foster), a School Secretary (Ms. S. Burgess), two Clerk-Typists (Ms. Mayers & Mrs. Rivera), a Library Assistant (Mrs. I. Small) and a Laboratory Assistant (Mr. Elvis Howard).

Security There are two Security Guards (Mr. Reece & Mr. Wharton) assigned to day time duties and a two- man team responsible for the night time security at the school.

THE BOARD OF MANAGEMENT The school has a supportive twelve (12) member Board of Management led by the Chairman, Mr. Junior Allsopp.

THE PARENT TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION (P.T.A) The school has an active parent Teachers’ Association, which meets on the second Thursday of every month at 5:00 p.m. It is led by President, Ms. Miranda Springer. ALL parents are invited to attend and be an active voice in the education of the children at P.T.A. meetings.

THE SCHOOL’S ALUMNI A very active and supportive alumni, forms part of the family at Graydon Sealy Secondary. This organization, led by Mr. R. Spooner, is responsible for the Orientation Programme for new students and the Mentorship Programme at the school. All past scholars of the school are encouraged to join this organization in order to make meaningful contributions to their alma mater. 40


GENERAL INFORMATION EMERGENCIES In cases of emergencies due to accidents or serious illness, it is the responsibility of the school according to the Education Act, to obtain medical attention in the shortest possible time. Parents will be notified urgently to come to the school and where this is not practicable, to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

MONEY Please avoid giving your daughter, son or ward large sums of money to bring to school. If it cannot be avoided the money should be deposited in the school office or with a teacher for safe keeping.

GENERAL Parents/Guardians MUST NOT go directly to any form room or to any student/teacher on the premises without permission.

MEDICINES Medicines MUST NOT be kept in the classroom or shared with other students. It is not the teacher’s duty to administer medication. If there is a

prescribed dose to be taken at midday or at other specified times, the parent or guardian may arrange to visit the school to facilitate this.

THE IMPORTANCE of STUDENT CONTACT INFORMATION It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to ensure that ALL contact information is current and usable. In the event that there is an emergency, you need to be easily reachable so that your child/ward can be adequately attended to. Keeping your contact information current also assist the school when contact must be made with you regarding the educational needs of your child/ward. Please ensure that you have completed the Parent/Student contract and filled in the current contact information. Ensure that the Parent/Student contract is signed by both Parent/Guardian and the student as this indicates that you both understand and embrace the school’s standards and what is expected from the student.
