It took two years for my business partner to tell me he’s finally ready to give being vegan a try and for Veganuary this year he’s “going vegan”. Hallelujah! I’m coaching him and with my vegan meal delivery service, I’m preparing lunch and dinner every day for this month, and I’m excited to see his results. When I run into people who want to be vegan, I get asked the most, “But, what will I eat?” Here’s a quick tutorial on what vegans eat and how to turn your curiosity into action! Firstly, vegans eat more than lettuce. For breakfast, we can enjoy oatmeal, smoothies, cereal, tofu scramble, breakfast burritos with beans, rice, and salsa; drinking plant-based milks like rice milk, soy milk, cashew milk, or almond milk that keep us pus, cruelty, hormone, and antibiotic-free. When lunch time rolls around, instead of cold-cuts a vegans will enjoy veggie sandwiches, maybe with hummus spread, lentil soup, or pita pizza; spreading hummus over pita bread topped with vegetables. Instead of a burger, a vegan would simply choose a

patty made from vegetables, soy or tempeh, or what most restaurants now call a veggie burger. Dinner suggestions include vegetable chili, stews poured over rice, veggie fajitas, and potato medleys. Eating fruits throughout the day keeps up energy, but we’re careful of nut consumption as they are higher in fat. Reducing or eliminating high saturated fats found in animal products is a snap when you’re vegan. Shopping in the produce section is far less expensive with the intentions of filling your plates with vegetables, grains, beans, lentils, and potatoes. The best part about being vegan is satisfying your curiosity while you seek out new recipes trying out different ingredients accented with exotic herbs and spices from the orient, you may or may not have used before, experimenting with fresh dill, cilantro, parsley, cardamom and turmerics just to name a few. Being vegan protects your life, your family, and your future. The better you take care of your body today, the better quality of life you’ll have today and in the future and this month we celebrate Veganuary!

The complex, housing the craft Vodka maker is also home to Wheelhouse coffee, where one could, if the mood struck them, pay $3 at minimum for a cup of joe. A few yards past the java house that blares acoustic 70’s rock jams is the famous L.A. Gun Club. Passing an ad agency, a shipping company, and a bookstore, this place is not an oasis. It’s Factory Place and it’s tucked into a part of the city that remains distinctly L.A. It’s dangerous, overpriced and full of homeless people posing as hipsters, and hipsters dressing like homeless people. They imitate each other yet silently despise their counterparts. We attempt to buzz into the building to no avail until a slight woman with dark hair punches some numbers on the keypad and our entry is granted. What’s something you want people to know about your brand? What makes this all worth it for you?

They should know first and foremost that we are about giving back. We’ve teamed up with a number of charitable organizations who are committed to ending the homelessness we are seeing right outside the windows here. We want to be known not just as the best damn vodka on the West Coast, but as an organization with a heart. We give back and want people to feel good about purchasing our product. That’s why quality is so important to us. If your product sucks and you have good causes behind you, people will only support for so long. If you make something good and really put time into it, people will keep coming back. They want to know they can rely on you and trust you. Consistency is key to gaining customer’s trust.

Yes. We will be moving to a place about seven times this size. It’s in Huntington Park. I think the space will ease a lot of the concerns and issue with regard to capacity. I mean you saw when you walked in all the traffic from the other businesses. It’s also more cost-effective from that standpoint. It will be easier to get trucks back into the space to make deliveries and get grains, barrels, etc. to us. No ingredients. No product.

You’re a millennial like me. How do you deal with that negative connotation usually associated with this generation? The entitlement tag? Is that what you mean? That we are spoiled?

Yes.

To an extent, our generation can be very self absorbed – unlimited vacation at work, free lunches, etc. etc. It’s almost comical. We’ve got all the tools which allow and fuel success compared to that of generations past. We are showing people can make a living and a difference doing what that love and enjoy. Me personally, I try to look at the good things associated with my generation or age group. Mainly, the fact that we are probably the most tolerant and socially aware group as a whole. There’s still a few dinosaurs roaming around making things hard for everyone, but we’re not going anywhere. I believe that.

Where did the name Gresescent come from?

It was born as a childhood prank. One of our partners as a child found it odd that restaurants used so many fancy words to describe their food. So he came up with a fancy sounding fake word, Gresescent, to go around gourmet ice cream shops to ask if their ice cream was “gresescent.” Sure enough, he got many of the workers agreeing that their ice cream was gresescent. After many years, now that we were starting our own ice cream business, we thought it was only appropriate that we call ourselves Gresescent, which now means the “magic of ice cream”.

Are all the flavors made in house?

Yes. We make most of the ingredients from scratch. For example, we bake the lemon bars with freshly squeezed lemon juice for the Lemon Bar flavor; we roast fresh pecans with brown sugar,

What is your favorite flavor?

My current favorite is Barley Milk Tea. It’s a traditional Asian tea turned into ice cream. I recommend it to our customers whenever it’s available!

We started coming up with the flavors and perfecting our recipes since 2014. We sold our first scoop in December 2015, and the DTLA shop opened officially in late September 2016.

We’d have to say it’s the way we view ice cream. To us, ice cream is not something we have to do anything crazy to make it good. We believe ice cream is magical in its purest form, so we try to take away any potential barriers to magic such as bad ingredients, bad customer service, unnecessary gimmicks, and even low-quality napkins and spoons that may ruin the magic of ice cream. The result is the pure joy that brings an immediate smile to your face.

How many flavors is Gresescent currently serving?

What are the 3 best selling flavors? Why do you think they are so popular?

Vanilla Bean Cookie and Cream, Blackberry Mint Mojito, Grilled Pineapple Bourbon Caramel. Our flavor principle is to make flavors that are simple and delicious, different yet familiar. We believe all three of these flavors remind you of something you’ve tasted before with a little bit of a twist to make it a truly magical experience.

How long has Gresescent been around?

What makes Gresescent different from other ice cream shops in downtown?

we have Honey Graham Pumpkin Cheesecake, Nutmeg Ginger Cookie, Salted Caramel Butter Cake. Also, some of the fruit flavors like Strawberry Jam is only available in Spring/Summer because we only use fresh fruits from farmer’s markets.

Are there plans of expansion?

Our primary goal is to grow together with the Downtown LA community. ginger, and cinnamon for our Spiced Maple Pecan flavor; and we make all the cookies and pies from scratch except for Oreos.

Tell us about the ingredients Gresescent uses.

Ingredient selection is one of the most important part of our mission to preserve the magic of ice cream. We use all organic dairy from Straus Creamery, one of the highest quality chocolates from Valrhona Chocolate, Nielsen Massey Madagascar Vanilla Beans, fresh fruits from local farmers markets, and more.
