I love Christmas but thank god for internet buying. I have family in different countries and different parts of the UK, all of whom receive presents from us at this festive time of year. Between the Midlands, UK and Australia there are six kids that need buying for that´s not to mention my own two teenagers that often want something very specific. I start my Christmas shopping at the end of November for the Australian side of the family and then presents for those in the UK at beginning of December. They are all bought and sent to their destination in time for Christmas Day. This sounds great and organised, but I actually miss the act of wrapping a mountain of presents and writing labels whilst sipping a glass of red wine in front of the fire and listening to Christmas music! We will be spending the Christmas period with family and New Year with friends which for me is the perfect way to spend the festive season. If you are spending Christmas here in Spain there are plenty of restaurants to choose from to celebrate in, just take a look inside the magazine! Dont forget a visít to Malaga to see the Christmas lights and their Belen is a must to get you into the spirit of things. As we are coming to the end of 2017 it seems appropriate to say thank you to all our advertisers, contributors and readers for helping make The Grapevine Magazine a great magazine for the community. Also, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year Enjoy and Keep Reading The Editor

ustralia needs Spanish teachers. The Spanish embassy in the country made a call for teaching staff on October 29, with the intention of filling a series of vacancies for nonpermanent positions, both full-time and as substitute teachers, during the 2017/2018 academic year. Educators who meet the requirements must send in applications by early afternoon November 13. Teachers who meet the requirements may send applications until November 13. Centers are looking for teachers who specialize in elementary school, early childhood education, foreign languages, music and physical education. Those wishing to teach high school are required to have a specialization in physics and chemistry, math, English, technology and electronic systems. The embassy also made a call for vocational training teachers with specializations in electronics. In addition, applicants must meet a series of requirements, such as having Spanish nationality or being a native of any of the member states of the European Union, not being currently employed by the government, having at least one year of experience, and being fluent in English.

The investigation began after a Spanish citizen complained to the police that he had received several tickets for speeding in places where he had not been driving. After analysing the information, it appeared that there were notable differences between the two vehicles. Officers concluded that there must be two vehicles of the same make, model and license plate, meaning that one of the vehicles was a fake or "clone" of the original. I scooped up his bedraggled little body and carried him from the vets' to my house. He was trembling uncontrollably and was just too scared to walk. Once inside the house, he settled down and slept for an eternity. He was safe. Three days later his matted fur was shaved off and the following week he was neutered. The scary stuff was over! Fast forward a couple of weeks and he'd discovered the joys of sleeping on sofas, beds and especially on my lap. He rapidly discovered the cat flap, which gained him access to a specially fenced-in terrace, where he could happily view the outside world from a position of safety. I took him with me to our charity shop every day in the hope that he'd become used to humans and learn to trust. But he was still incredibly timid with strangers, so Sharon and I agreed to wait a while until he had grown in confidence before he started his journey to England. We planned his trip for December. In the meantime we were in touch twice a day with updates and photos of Inka's progress and photos of Lily, Sharon's dog, who was soon to be Inka's new friend.

White Christmas Bin Cosby stars in this Christmas flick, that is more famous for the song from it than it even the film. The movie is a charming one where two GI's home from WW2 fall in love with a pair of sisters and help them with their failing Inn in Vermont. National Lampoon Christmas Vacation For sheer silliness this film is a laugh a minute comedic riot. The amount of one liners this film offers is huge and it really goes for the love/hate Christmas relationship some people have. It is a very funny movie that really has a large number of small laughs making it ideal for that Christmas bit of cheer. It is also often available with special deals.

CHRISTMAS MOVIES Films to put you in the mood!! Elf For laughs and stupidity and a festive feeling to boot, Elf secures itself on our list. The Will Ferrell persona of Buddy the Elf is one of his most memorable and may be remembered more than anchorman in years to come. Ferrell is brilliant in this film as a clueless elf in Manhattan and really makes one of the best movies we've seen of this kind ever. Elf is often available on a special deal on the high street or over the web this time of year. Home Alone 1 & 2 Though both films have suspiciously the same plot line they are both brilliant. Boy gets lost in big city and ends up getting embroiled in trouble with two burglars. Joe Pesci is brilliant and Culkin excellent as 8 year old Kevin. The film really is a funny and touching Christmas hit and one all the family will enjoy, while having a giggle at the 90s hairstyles and clothing. Scrooged Bill Murray fans will love this Christmas hit. Bill Murray's

16 The Grapevine

amazing acting ability and the way he can walk the line between pathos and sheer outright hilarity is brilliant. Murray ends up receiving the Christmas Carol treatment in this Dicken's romp, which takes a modern twist. The mixture of a great story, brilliant acting and Murray's comedic genius makes this a excellent one for Christmas. It's a Wonderful Life One of the Christmas classics and for many a must see every Christmas. This tale of depression is a Christmas classic that embodies all the values of Christmas, from family, to friends to the joy of life and is worth it with or without a special deal. Miracle on 34th Street This classic has been remade a number of times, yet it is the original that endures. Made in 1947, it is about Kris Kringle who is termed insane for thinking he is Santa Claus, when he actually is. However, after some brilliant acting and a great story all is restored and Christmas can continue.

A Nightmare Before Christmas Tim Burton's film is ultimately a creative dream and one of our favourites, even on this list. The amazing creativity and the awesomely ghoulish film with a meaning is a brilliant movie and one that shows Burton's creative genius and how Christmas films aren't all the same. A Christmas Carol Whether it is in the original form, or even the Muppets version, A Christmas Carol is a must see at Christmas time. This Dickens's classic is possibly best reproduced in the 1951 version where Scrooge is acted brilliantly. It is a black and white version usually, though a coloured one exists. HoweverComputer Technology Articles, it is a brilliant version of the film and worthy of purchasing with special deals. The Kermit the Frog version also is quite an exciting one and really offers a great take on the carol. The Muppets are there usually hilarious selves and it is also a great one for kids and adults alike.

SAIL AND STAY An Interview with Mike Shaw Roberts New Owner.

S

ail and Stay based in La Herradura offering sailing trips departing every day from Marina Del Este has been running for nearly 10 years under the ownership of Stephen. I interviewed Stephen a few years back and went on one of their cruises. Stephen was lovely and the cruise was absolutely fantastic. The whole family had an incredible day out. We went on a lunch cruise that started with fizz and nibbles then we went sailing for a couple of hours, anchored up, had lunch and drinks, snorkeled in clear waters, swam, had a dingy ride, used the padel surf, sunbathed on the catamaran deck in the beautiful sunshine. It really was a lovely day that I could thoroughly recommend to others. This year I Interviewed Mike

28 The Grapevine

from Sail and Stay and he informs me he is the new owner. So the obvious first question is what has changed? His answer was …… ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Mike believed Stephen created an almost perfect product that stands head and shoulders above the cruises sailing from this coastline. Mike explained you still sail with us on our luxury catamaran, "Optimist of London II", a Lagoon 380. We still operate all-inclusive 3, 4 or 6 hour cruises with a delicious meal, all drinks and water sports included. We can still accommodate individuals, small groups or large parties. You can still relax & enjoy your day at sea with their fully qualified skippers and professional crew to look after you and you can still book online at http://www.sailandstay.eu. The only thing that has changed is the owner and even then Mike has been part of the business with Stephen for the last 7 years!

Mike first met Stephen when he went out on one of the Sail and Stay cruises for his birthday. They talked for most of the cruise and Stephen said he hadn’t had a day off for the last 6 months and how tired he was. Mike explained he had been in the travel business since the 1980s working for First Choice holidays and then moving to Spain where he owned and ran Ranch Ferrer which had 15 horses and numerous mountain bikes. With recession hitting the Ranch and his kids leaving for university, who had previously helped out in the family business, things had changed for him, so he was looking for a new challenge. Mike also told Stephen that he had been sailing for 30 years and had his own yacht in the UK. It wasn’t long into the cruise that he offered his services to help out on the boat, if Stephen needed a break!

To advertise call 637 028 873

The pair kept in touch and the following summer Stephen asked Mike to work for him one day a week so he could have a day off, the following year Mike worked 2 days a week and then the third year they split the work, working one day on and one day off. Mike certainly knows the ropes and so when Stephen himself wanted a new challenge it seemed very natural for Mike to take over the business. So in August of this year exactly 7 years to the month of his first cruise for his birthday he took over the business. Mike couldn’t be happier he loves meeting new people and providing an experience to remember on the Catamaran. As the business comes in the winter season it’s a beautiful time of year to take a cruise. I came from Competa to interview Mike and the temperature was at

To advertise call 637 028 873

least 5 degrees warmer than on the coast then the mountains. It was a beautiful day with clear blue skies and a mild breeze, excellent conditions for sailing. In fact, Mike explained the winter provides often better conditions for sailing than the summer. Why not buy a sail and stay voucher for a loved one for that perfect Christmas present .Gift vouchers are available from just 60€ per person and valid for the next 12 months, inclusive of complimentary chilled cava, fresh fruit and nibbles on departure, beers, wines and soft drinks throughout the trip and a plentiful and varied gourmet buffet meal served at anchor.

Reputedly the third largest carnival in the world (after Rio and Trinidad), this is an ideal way to combine some spectacular sailing with two or three nights of pure partying at this famous street party. Safely tucked up in the cities historic harbour, we will be right at the epicentre of all the colourful action, but without the headache of travelling in for an hour each way from the only available hotel rooms to take part in the festivities!

Or if you have been on a cruise with Mike already as have 2575 people have this year! Why not book something different´ as new for this winter, sail and stay are going to the Cadiz Carnival.

THE CHRISTMAS PUDDING The History of the Christmas Pudding

C

hristmas pudding is a pivotal part of any festive celebration. Whether families have their own recipe passed through generations or opt to buy one readymade, the tradition of the Xmas pud is a strong one. The strong tradition heralds all the way back to medieval England. According to Andrea Broomfield in her book on food and cooking in Victorian England, the tradition of how to make it stems from the Roman Catholic Church. They decreed that the pudding should be made on the 25th Sunday after Trinity, prepared with precisely 13 ingredients, signifying Christ and his 12 apostles. It is also here where the tradition of the whole family taking a turn to stir the pudding comes from. This was originally done to honour the Three Wise Men or Magi, by stirring and 'turning' the pudding East to West you were meant to aid their journey in that direction. Often referred to as plum pudding or plum duff the actual contents of the Christmas pudding do vary.

30 The Grapevine

Traditionally though the recipe was designed to merge luxury ingredients, most notably the spices and suet. As a result of the long cooking time and the reliance on dark sugars and treacle in many recipes the pudding is very dark in colour. Everything is kept moist with the addition of plenty of alcohol. The choice of tipple depends largely on the preferences of the chef, but can include brandy, mild or stout. When it comes to the cooking of Christmas pudding the method used to be wrapping it in a pudding cloth and boiling. The modern alternative however favours the basin and some serious steaming. This is the initial stage and then when the day arrives for serving, all that needs to be done is some reheating (steaming again). Once it's hot and ready to go, it is time to present it, flamboyantly of course. A favourite is to douse it in a liquor of choice and light, whoosh, flaming Christmas pud! Accompaniments are varied, but most common are custard, cream, rum or brandy butter and

sprinkled caster sugar. Aside from the ingredients, cooking and serving there are further historical traditions. The entire family having a stir has already been mentioned, but this wasn't the only custom practiced while making a Christmas pudding. Silver coins commonly, but other tokens too, were added to the mix. These other tokens would include a wishbone symbolising good luck, a ring for a wedding or an anchor representing safe harbour. The coins themselves would indicate wealth. As the pudding was shared, whoever received a slice with a token would receive this as an extra Christmas gift and supposedly have its attribute bestowed on them in the coming year. Hopefully the historic nature of the Christmas pudding will have you enthused and full of ideas for your own recipe this year. Just remember, if you do add tokens to your mixture, do let you fellow festive diners know!.

CREATIVE PROPERTY MARKETING The 'drive-by' of a property for sale is now done on-line…

I

f you have a property for sale in Spain, you may like to consider the following:

and read the details in full? · Are the key selling points of your property mentioned immediately?

If your property is offered for sale on the internet, does it have good on-line 'kerb appeal'?

· Can a potential buyer instantly see where your property is located?

· Is the main photo of your property eye catching?

If you have given this consideration, you may decide that a potential buyer will:

· Do you offer the potential buyer a quality portfolio of photos to browse? · Does your property stand out from the competition on-line? · Is your property displayed for sale on-line around the world on the very best property sales portals (not just an estate agent's website)? · Does the title given to the description of your property sum it up beautifully? · Will the potential buyer be enticed to click on your property

34 The Grapevine

· Simply scroll past your property for sale and click on another. · Or, even worse, they may not find your property for sale at all!

They make sure the marketing of your property on-line is done to the highest standard and presented to buyer around the world on up to 190 global websites. · To make things even better, they don't charge commission when your house sells! · Every month they sell numerous properties throughout Spain (the mainland & islands). See their advert opposite on page.

There is a solution: · Please have a look at the website of Creative Property Marketing – you may be amazed by what they do: www.creativepropertymarketing.com

Sarah & David Rick of Creative Property Marketing welcome your phone call to discuss how they can help you find a buyer for your property (without obligation): Tel: 0034 951 400 228

BODEGAS BENTOMIZ

A Classy Christmas

M

aking plans for Christmas? It can seem hard to find something different, something memorable, to do with family and friends at this busy time of year. But you should consider Bodegas Bentomiz, the Sayalonga based winery, which as well as producing exceptional wines offers tours of their vineyard and production facilities, wine tastings and even delicious lunches paired with their wines. It is run by a Dutch couple, André and Clara, who came over to Spain 22 years ago. They have a wonderful eye for design, as visitors to their unusual Bauhausstyle venue realise immediately. Best of all is their wine-salon: bright and elegant with a simply stunning view from the Med to the

44 The Grapevine

mountains. To judge from Christmas past it will be tastefully decorated to create a Christmas atmosphere without spoiling its natural charm.

So, celebrate this year with local wine; dishes made from local ingredients & local musicians performing – with no compromise as all are top class quality. This has to be the classiest way to celebrate Christmas and to welcome the New Year in Malaga! If you can't make it, why not book as a treat for another day? The bodega is open, offering its popular, wine-tastings and marvellous 3 or 5 course lunches throughout the year – including the whole of December and January – from Wednesday to Sunday. If the reviews they have received on Facebook and TripAdvisor are anything to go by, this is a five-star treat in itself; a great option for a winter's day.

See advert Opposite And this December they will also offer live music for the pleasure of guests. The Bodega is proud to be hosting local musicians Nueva Duet on both Christmas Day itself and on New Year's Day. Adriana Rojo Ruiz, from Cómpeta, and her companion Jesús Diaz Gonzalez will be playing as a string duo on cello and viola within at gorgeous wine-salon. Bright, melodious, uplifting and delightful: is there any sound more moving than these beautiful strings? An exciting program is being planned: Nueva Duet's range includes classical, Christmas carols, tangos, boleros and popular modern music.

the lights from an old telephone switchboard, wiring them on a Christmas tree, and running a battery as a power source.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS A Brief History

T

hose of us who celebrate Christmas with a tree in our homes usually choose to light it in one way or another. But did you ever stop to wonder how we got started lighting our trees? The first lights on Christmas trees were candles that were attached to the tree branches with either melted wax or pins that held them in place. As you can imagine, many trees went up in flames due to this practice. One might guess that at that time, many families would have kept buckets of water nearby to extinguish the impending fire. In the homes of the wealthy, it was often times the job of a servant to watch the tree during the evening hours and be prepared to extinguish a fire, if necessary. As a result of this eminent risk, most trees were decorated on December 24th and promptly removed following Christmas day. This must have been a lot of work for such a short viewing of the tree! In 1882, the technology of Thomas Edison was used to hand wire 80 red, white, and blue lights onto the first electronically lighted Christmas tree. It took a few years for this idea to catch on. When President Grover Cleveland set up an electronically lighted Christmas tree in the White House in 1895, finally the idea

50 The Grapevine

began to get some publicity. The general public realized that there was a better way to light their Christmas trees. By the close of the 1800's, General Electric Company began manufacturing and selling hand blown bulbs that were ready to wire into a string to be put on a Christmas tree. Since the average homeowner was not well educated about how electricity worked in those days, a new industry sprung up of "wiremen" who were hired to wire the bulbs together to light the family tree. In the early 1900's, some big department stores began setting up large illuminated trees to attract customers. And attract customers it did! Everyone wanted to have a tree at home like the stores were capable of putting on display. In the early 1900's, the cost of such a tree was in excess of $300. That price included a generator and the wireman's service. By today's standard, that cost would be equivalent to more than $2,000. In 1903, the American Eveready Company developed and marketed the first Christmas light set, which had screw in bulbs and a plug in wall socket, since many homes had been "wired" for electricity by this time. Then in 1908, entrepreneur Ralph Morris came up with the idea of taking

But the individual who made the biggest difference in electric Christmas tree lights, and who made them affordable to the general public, was Albert Sadacca. Albert's family manufactured imitation birds in a wicker cage that lit up with electricity. At the age of 15, Albert had the idea of making electric Christmas lights. His parents thought it sounded like a good idea, and the family gave it a go. The first year, they only sold 100 sets of lights. The following year, Albert decided to color the bulbs in red, green, and other colors. This idea really took off. Albert Sadacca went on to become the head of a NOMA Electric Company, a multi-million dollar corporation. Headed up by Albert and his two brothers, Henri and Leon, the trio formed the largest Christmas lighting company in the world prior to 1965. Today, yet another revolution in Christmas lighting is occurring. The newest offering in holiday lights are LED lights that use significantly less electricity than incandescent bulbs and burn out less frequently. With the trend toward energy conservation and "going green", LED lights are rapidly gaining in popularity. Though they are more expensive than traditional incandescent light setsScience Articles, one way to change over all your holiday lights is to buy one new set of LED lights per year until everything is changed over. Christmas tree lighting technology will continue to change as time goes on. History shows us that we've made many improvements in the last few centuries. Only time will tell what's in store for holiday lights in years to come! Ellen Bell

TIN TIN HAIR AND BEAUTY COMPETA An Interview with the Team

his month I interviewed Trina who owns Tin Tin, a hair and beauty salĂłn in Competa. Tin Tin has been in business for a huge 23 years and around 10 years ago I interviewed Trina for the first time, now we come together again 10 years later to see what has changed!

T

term plan just went with what felt right and so while she continued to learn Spanish she started mobile hairdressing to gain an income. However, she explained how different things were in those days, no mobile phones or GPS and so finding clients in the countryside proved extremely difficult!

Trina is originally from the Feroe Islands and holidayed every summer in Competa with her parents who bought a home in the village in 1984. In 1992, after Trina had finished 5years at Hairdressing College, she decided to come to Competa to learn Spanish to add to her languages she is fluent in such as English, Danish and of course the language of the Faroe Islands. She first stayed in her parents place in the Competa countryside and travelled to a language school every day in Nerja. Later she moved into the village and rented a place to interact more with the Spanish. Trina never really had a long

In 1994 Trina opened her first Salon opposite Marco Polo just off the main plaza of Competa. She started initially on her own and then Gema joined her mainly to help out with the beauty side of things. Gema and Trina became brilliant friends and Gema remained working with Trina throughout a salon move to behind CafĂŠ Competa, both of then getting married and two children each later! However, 3 years ago Gema made a move to the coast and Trina was left looking for help in the Salon. So Isa, who has 25 years of Hairdressing and Beauty Training, joined Trina two years ago. Isa is a local Spanish lady who worked in Malaga as a

54 The Grapevine

More recent changes occurred this year in July when Ellie Fulleylove joined the team. Ellie is English, fluent in Spanish and trained in beauty currently with a focus on Nails. Ellie has taken over from Isa the Manicures, Pedicures, Shellac and Acrylic nails and soon she will be offering Eye Lash Extensions. Asides from the eye lash course Ellie is doing which will be available in December onwards she will also be doing more beauty therapy training in the up and coming months to be able to provide the same and even more treatments alongside Isa. Isa at the moment remains providing waxing, tinting, facials and eyelash perms. Ellie has had loads of experience, she has worked in salons, a nail bar in Eroski and the Albidini. She has had a few other different jobs inbetween but she is at her happiest in a Salon and she is delighted to join Trina. Ellie commented on how nice the Tin Tin Salon feels. She explained it is warm, friendly and sociable and clients vary in age, nationality and personality. It's busy, vibrant and every day is different. It's a popular place for people to book their hair and beauty treatments before weddings, communions and birthdays. Trina and Isa regularly go on courses to learn more about latest techniques, products and styling so are always up to date in the business. Tin Tin has just gone from strength to strength over the last 23 years and many clients have been with her over all those years. Why not pop by the salon and book your Christmas treatments and meet the team.

to music including work by Jack Kerouac, Pete Brown (1960s British beat poet) William Blake, Allen Ginsberg, Federico Garcia Lorca and some of Keith's own. This time, and rather unplanned, he has teamed up with the amazing producer / sound artist, Branwen Munn.

KEITH JAMES - POET, MUSIC COMPOSER, CONCERT PERFORMER GALLERY LUZ DE LA VIDA. Competa 21st December 20.30

K

eith James is one of the most passionate and inventive concert artists currently performing in the UK. After almost 2 decades working as a Record Producer and realising his definite preference for live performance, 2000 witnessed Keith begin a UK wide tour of concerts based entirely on his love of Poetry. He has performed many different concerts over the past 17 years. Each one centres on studies and transcriptions of revered Poets and Writers and includes a significant amount of biographical material. The most notable of these is a deep study of the music of Nick Drake, 2 CD Albums and 2 hugely successful tours featuring the Poetry of Lorca set to music – The Gypsy Ballads 1928 and Poet in New York 1930. Other important projects are a CD Album and concert tour featuring a collection of Poetry by Dylan Thomas and an ongoing busy schedule of bio-doc concerts spanning over 6 years performing interpretive versions of songs by Leonard Cohen.

56 The Grapevine

Keith is fiercely independent and therefore his career has for many years, existed in a parallel universe, almost under wraps, esoteric and secretive. He has enjoyed very little radio exposure, he doesn't fit easily into any music category, he has never signed a recording or publishing deal. Despite this, he has released 13 CD Albums, all self-produced and selfpublished. The most recent from 2015 is entitled Always, a collection of his own poetry set to music along with one by Pablo Neruda from the 1930s. He has just released a brand new Album, all settings of Poetry

Keith lives in a writing retreat, way up in the hills of Powys, Wales and some time of each year in AndalucĂa. Since the mid '70s, his third home has been the Island of Naxos, Greece. He currently performs around 100 concerts per annum in Theatres, Art Centres and other inspiring boutique spaces such as Galleries and Arts Cafes. He is currently compiling a volume of his own poetry to be published in 2018 along with some sporadic work on a rather surreal and somewhat comedic novel. Keith. the end of 2017…Keith James will be back with us, and on the 21st of December at 8:30pm he’ll perform his music in the gallery. Keith is one of the most passionate and inventive concert artists currently performing in the UK.

GALERIA LUZ DE LA VIDA The end of 2017 - a year filled with activities!

W

e started the year by upgrading our gallery garden. It changed from an area filled with banana trees (yes - in the centre of Competa!) into a cosy, artistic and atmospheric garden. Many buckets of sand, stones and cement were carried from one place to another. Much was built and paved. And thanks to various friends and helpers we managed to get it all done. The Swiss artist Anne-Barbara created a beautiful mosaic during the Art Walk. The trees and flowers are adding their beauty. Then we had the Art Walk with 22 locations and 38 participants! It attracted many visitors from the region and even from further away the town was buzzing. We were very lucky with the beautiful weather, and a lot of good quality art was shown, as well as some handicraft products. Bronze caster Daan showed the bronze casting process and English artist George Kowzan made a beautiful wall painting at the roof terrace of Taberna Oscars. Live music gave the village extra rhythm. Although it took a lot of work to organise, it was all worth it, and Jeroen Stultiens made a nice summary film of the event. https://vimeo.com/231286289

was packed, and everybody enjoyed Keith’s voice, music and performance. The acoustics in the gallery are good for intimate live concerts, and musicians love to bring their art to the audience. The gallery finally got its own logo! A wooden sign with the gallery name is hung above the entrance, and also, a new website was built! And of course we’ve had many good exhibitions in the gallery, Art was made, shown and sold. Thats the way we like it. In autumn we held the 3rd International Art Symposium. 12 International artists from different countries travelled to Competa, and stayed for more than a week, and they all created strong inspiring art works in the Salon de Actos. Visitors were welcome to witness the creative processes. Great to see how after just 1 week all energies blended and how a kind of new family was born! Visitors came up to the mountain village to experience the creative energy and to meet the artists. The art exhibition is up until the 3rd of December. And for the ones who are looking for something special, most art pieces are still available! The year 2017 is now almost at an end. The gallery space served the many artists and visitors really well. It is a space filled with good energy and gives inspiration and joy to many. Especially with the garden now, it has gained more value.

There were various music evenings in the gallery, including the great and unforgettable concert by singersongwriter Keith James. The space Last but definitely not least……at

More information: http://www.keithjames.com/ For bookings: info@lieuwkeloth.nl From the 7th of December we’ll show art by Indian artist Poonam Chandirka Tyagi, who also participated in the art symposium in October and we'll show the art by other artists as well. For the new year 2018, there are lots of plans for new activities. Although, for a long time, Lieuwke doubted if she’d take on the task of organising another Art Walk, in the end she decided the successful art event should be continued. So keep the dates: 31st of March and 1st, 3rd and 4th of April free for the 10th (!) Art Walk in Competa. We would like to thank everyone who offered their help to hang the big art-events, and to keep the activities running! Also a big thanks to everyone who sponsored or helped in other ways. Without help, none of this would be possible! Together we make Competa a vibrant and attractive place for many! CHRISTMAS MARKETS A Selection of European Christmas Markets

Y

ou haven’t experienced Christmas lights until you’ve seen nearly four miles of them artfully hung in patterns dictated by Tiffany’s head designer in Copenhagen’s famed historic amusement park, Tivoli Gardens—and that’s not counting the 1,800 strands dramatically draped on the lakeside willows. Copenhagen celebrates Jul (as in "yuletide") in high style, with its famed Christmas market the centerpiece. Stalls stocked with fine handmade crafts, including traditional figurines of clog-clad elves in pointy red caps, compete for space with vendors selling iced doughnuts slathered with black currant jam and hefty cups of gløgg, a steaming hot mulled red wine laden with raisins, almonds, cinnamon sticks, and cloves—all of which, for good measure, are steeped in aquavit or schnapps. Christmas in Europe is a time for elaborate pastries straight out of a medieval cookbook, for lyrical

66 The Grapevine

midnight masses in Gothic churches, and for the upholding of quirky local traditions—in many countries, Christmas just isn’t complete without mischievous pixies (Copenhagen), kindly witches (Rome), treacherous demons (Salzburg), or an 8,000-pound fruitcake (Dresden). However else Europeans celebrate the Yuletide season, Christmas still centers around an Advent market that, in most cases, has filled the square before the cathedral each December for hundreds upon hundreds of years. Many markets start on the Friday before Advent, which is four Sundays before Christmas Eve; most end on December 24, especially in Germanic countries, where Christmas Eve is set aside for trimming the tree at home. Others keep celebrating until Epiphany on January 6. Brussels, Belgium Brussels' Christmas market has been around only since 2002, but it pulls off its Plaisirs d'Hiver/Winter Pret ("Pleasures of Winter") festival with elegant style. The theatrics include a nightly sound-and-light show on

the Grand Place and a market surrounding the Bourse (Stock Exchange) and along Place Sainte Catherine. In keeping with that Belgian spirit of a United Europe, the 200+ wooden chalets host artisans from around the world hawking a kaleidoscope of Christmas wares, handmade crafts, and souvenirs. Not that Belgian traditions are left out; browse the many food stalls for pots of moules (mussels) and caricoles (peppery whelks or winkles), Belgian fries and fluffy Belgian waffles, seasonal croustillons (sugar doughnuts), and Belgium's two most welcome additions to world cuisine: fine chocolates and powerful beer. At one end of the shopping, near the fish market, you'll find a spinning, glittering 160-foot Ferris wheel, and, at the Place de la Monnaie, a nearly 8,000square-foot ice skating rink. Copenhagen, Denmark Copenhagen celebrates Jul (as in "yuletide") with a Christmas crafts market and surfeit of lightbedecked Christmas trees in the city's famed historic amusement park, Tivoli Gardens. Nearly four miles of lights are artfully hung in patterns dictated by Tiffany's head designer, while hundres of strands are draped on the lakeside willows. Join the Danes in warding off the cold with æbleskiver (iced doughnuts with black currant jam) and glogg, a steaming hot mulled red wine laden with raisins, almonds, cinnamon sticks, and cloves—all of which are steeped in aquavit or schnapps. There's also a crafts market installed along a canal in the historic Nyhavn district; try to visit it between 5 and 6pm weekdays to catch the town crier. London, England London's Christmas shopping season opens in November, when Regent Street

ceremoniously switches on its Christmas lights for a pedestrian parade. London typically spreads out its Christmas cheer, from the official Norwegian spruce on Trafalgar Square to the ice skating rink at Somerset House. Trees bedecked with fairy lights herald Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland (mid-Nov. - early Jan.), which includes London's largest outdoor skating rink, a toboggan slide, a Ferris wheel, carolers, and a traditional German Christmas market. More small markets spring up at the Natural History Museum, which installs a temporary ice rink (early Nov. -mid-Jan.); and the Greenwich Market (most of Dec.). Christmas concerts abound, but it's hard to resist the carol sing-along at the Royal Albert Hall (from mid Dec.). Dresden, Germany Nothing says Christmas like a four-ton fruitcake. At least, that's the fervent opinion of the citizens of Dresden, who parade their supersize stollen through the city in early December. Accompanied by the Stollenmädchen, or "Fruitcake Maiden," the Saxon fruit loaf wends its way through the medieval streets before making its triumphal entry into the Striezelmarkt, where, surrounded by 230 glittering crafts stalls and a 46-foot "Christmas pyramid," the stollen is chopped into pieces that are inflicted upon the market-goers. Dresden's Striezelmarkt and its odd traditions date back to 1434, making it Germany's oldest continuously running Christmas market. Munich, Germany Crafts stalls surround a glittering 85-foot Christmas tree on the Marienplatz, which is filled with Muncheners munching on sausages and reiber-datschi (potato pancakes), gulping glühwein, and crunching Lebkuchen (gingerbread).

Munich trains its next generation of marketers at the "Heavenly Workshop" in the Town Hall's pub, where kids dress up as angels to practice arts, crafts, and the baking of traditional cookies. Every evening at 5:30, from the Friday before Advent to the night before Christmas, string and wind players along with singers and choirs peal out carols from the balcony of the neo-Gothic Rathaus (Town Hall). Nuremberg, Germany On the Friday before Advent, the golden Christmas Angel appears on the high gallery of the medieval Frauenkirche to recite the opening prologue for one of the biggest and most famous Christmas markets of them all. Some two million shoppers descend upon the 180+ candy cane-striped stalls that fill the main square with crafts, ornaments, and toys. The air is perfumed with gingerbread, glühwein, and smoke swirling from bratwurst grills. Market officials enforce traditions with typical Teutonic efficiency: no plastic wreaths, recorded Christmas Muzak, or gaudy carousels allowed. Prague, Czech Republic The two best Vanocni trh (Christmas markets) are on the long slope of Wenceslas Square and in the medieval movie set of the Old Town Square formed around a giant Christmas tree, manger scene, and small petting zoo. The markets' brightly decorated stalls sell wooden toys, Bohemian crystal, handmade jewelry, classic Czech marionettes,

and plenty of potential for tooth decay: honeyed gingerbread, vánocvka (a braided pastry studded with raisins), and vosí hnízda' ("wasps nests," nutty cookies heavy with rum). Wash it all down with mead and svarene vino (a sweet mulled wine). Christmas Eve dinner consists of wine sausages and carp—you'll see barrels of the fish everywhere. Slip a carp scale into your wallet to ensure an adequate cash flow for the upcoming year. Rome, Italy Romans erect elaborate presepi (Nativity scenes) across the city, from life-size tableaux on the Spanish Steps and before St. Peter's to countless crèches in church chapels, all populated by papier-mâché or terracotta figurines and most with a pizza parlor tucked between the shops of the Bethlehem backdrop. Market action centers in Rome on Piazza Navona, its Bernini fountains surrounded by stalls hawking toys, handmade presepio figures, carnival games of chance, ciambelle (dinner plate-size doughnuts), and 101 variations on peanut brittle.

TURKEY POT PIE

For the Pot Pie: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. In a large cast iron pan over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Add the pearl onions and saute for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the carrots, peas and turkey. Reduce the heat to low, add the flour, and cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes. Whisk in the hot chicken broth. Simmer over low heat for about 3 minutes, or until the broth begins to thicken and bubble slightly. Season. Add the picked parsley and tarragon.

A Christmas Recipe INGREDIENTS TURKEY POT PIE For the Roasted Turkey Legs: 3 Turkey Legs 2 Oranges (juiced and zested) 1/2 cup Olive Oil 2 tablespoons Honey 3 tablespoons Coriander Seeds (toasted) 2 Jalapenos (minced) 2 Oranges (thinly sliced and seeded) 2 Bay Leaves 2 small Red Onions (peeled and quartered) 1 small bunch fresh Thyme FOR THE POT PIE: 1/2 cup frozen Pearl Onions (thawed) 3 roasted Turkey Legs (meat removed and bones discarded and chopped into medium pieces) 6 tablespoons Unsalted Butter 1/3 cup All Purpose Flour (plus more for rolling) 3 cups Chicken Broth (warmed) 1 cup finely diced Carrots Kosher Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper 1 cup Peas 1/4 cup fresh Tarragon 1/4 cup Parsley (leaves picked) 1/2 recipe Pastry Dough 1 large Egg (beaten) with 1 tablespoon Milk flaky Sea Salt and cracked Black Peppercorns

FOR THE PASTRY DOUGH: 6 cups All-Purpose Flour 2 teaspoons Kosher Salt 2 tablespoons Sugar 1 pound Unsalted Butter (cold and diced) 1 1/2 to 2 cups Ice Water DIRECTIONS For the Roasted Turkey Legs: Whisk together the orange zest and juice, 2 tablespoons of the olive oil, the honey, coriander sees, and the jalapenos. Put the turkey in a large nonreactive bowl or gallon-sized zip-top bag, pour the marinade over the chicken, and rub it all over the inside and outside of the bird. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight, occasionally turning the legs in the marinade. Remove the turkey from the fridge half an hour before roasting so that it comes to room temperature. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. In a medium sized bowl, toss the orange slices, bay leaves, onion and thyme in about 3 tablespoons of olive oil, and generously season with salt and pepper Spread the mixture on the bed of a roasting pan and then add the turkey legs. Rub the legs with the remaining olive oil. Roast for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the internal temperature is 160 degrees F. Remove from the

On a floured surface, roll out a large enough piece of dough to cover the cast iron skillet. Lay over the top, letting it drape over the sides. Brush the top and edges with the egg wash. Make 6 slits in the top of the dough to allow steam to vent. Sprinkle with sea salt and cracked peppercorns. Put the skillet on a a baking sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the filling is bubbling hot. For the Pastry Dough: Put half the flour, salt, and sugar in the bowl of a food processor, pulsing a few times to mix. Add half the butter. Pulse until the butter is about the size of small peas. With the machine running, begin adding the ice water a few tablespoons at a time (up to 3/4 to 1 cup total) until the dough begins to form a ball. Stop adding water as soon as it does. Dump the dough out onto a floured work surface and bring together into a ball. Divide the ball into 2 equal halves. Flatten each mound slightly, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Repeat with the remaining ingredients. The dough will keep for up to 1 week in the fridge or up to 2 months in the freezer. Defrost overnight in the refrigerator before rolling.

I

blame it all on chocolate. Advent calendars were rare things when I was a kid; I remember a friend had one and I was green with envy. I so wanted to open the little windows every day, gaze upon the festive scene therein, eyes glazed with the wonder and excitement of it all – longing and waiting for the finale of the last window and the Big Day. Nowadays you can open the windows onto a world of pure glitz and kitsch. Twenty four drams of incredibly rare whiskies for some €10,000 – and so rare are the whiskies that only 10 calendars are available, so you're surely, and sadly, already too late to order: from Fortnum and Mason a wooden calendar with 24 drawers full of some of the world's rarest teas – just made to sup from your mug whilst sitting in the garden shed and a snip at €125. And the most expensive advent calendar in the

Don't open those wee windows in the garden shed – you might drop the diamonds into your potting compost – especially if you've been partaking of the wicked whiskies beforehand!

Happy Tails Sometimes people ask the Costa Animal Society ( CAS) why we send dogs to Northern European countries so we thought we would provide a short description of the process. Most people who work to rescue animals in Andalucia will tell you the task is monumental with around 15,000 dogs abandoned each year in this region alone and there are very limited foster and permanent homes available. The end result is that literally thousands of dogs are placed in rescue shelters (if they are lucky) while the unfortunate ones meet an untimely death in a local pound.

CAS NEWS CAS Holiday Greetings

A

s the year comes to an end, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to express our gratitude to all of our friends and volunteers who have been fantastic in all aspects of rescuing and rehoming animals in need. From business sponsors to shop volunteers, from private kennels to fosterers, and especially to the work of our veterinarian partners, thank you. From those who take care of the paperwork enabling us to send wonderful dogs to our sister charities in Northern Europe and Scandinavia, to the volunteers who drive them to the airport and to those who fly with them, muchisimas gracias!

At the same time, in Scandinavian countries as well as Holland and Germany there are strict neutering policies and limits placed on breeding by the governments so they actually have a shortage of dogs available for adoption. With our local animal societies struggling to find homes for rescued animals and with more being abandoned everyday it only makes sense for groups like CAS to work closely with sister charities in Northern Europe to find good places in those countries. However, this is only the beginning of the journey because dogs travelling to Norway require a microchip, passport and two rabies jabs (three weeks apart) as well as the other normal vaccinations. After waiting six weeks for the rabies vaccines to take effect the dogs must then undergo a rabies titer blood test to show they have sufficient antibodies in their blood stream. The lab results take another two weeks and then a flight has to be arranged so from start to finish it takes several months for a dog to be prepared for Norway. If there is no foster place available during the prep time CAS has to place the dog into kennels while they wait for a travel date. Tim is nearing the end of this process and will hopefully be in his new home before Christmas.
