Following on from last month’s article in Spanish and English with the Gelateria in Competa we have continued with two more interviews with local successful business people. If you would like to have an interview in this same format please do get in touch for details.

With the clocks now changed we have more daylight in the evenings and the days feel longer which is great for me as I feel I have more time to work, keep fit and be with the kids. Spring albeit short in Spain is a nice time of the year. The land is still green and the flowers are out and it’s not too hot, living in Spain is good!

The woman, who is five months pregnant, reported her partner to police in Vitoria, northern Spain, for “repeatedly abusing her both sexually and physically”.

ive paintings by British artist Francis Bacon worth an estimated €30m (£23.2m) have been stolen from the Madrid home of their owner, according to Spanish media. Sources close to the investigation told El Pais the theft appeared to have been a highly professional operation which took place while the owner was away, with the perpetrators disabling the alarm system. The thieves, who left no trace of their handiwork, had tracked the owner’s movements to ensure he did not return to his apartment to catch them red-handed, they said.

El Pais quoted the sources as saying the works, comprising portraits and landscapes, were stolen last June. It was not immediately clear why news of the theft was not made public until now. It was also unclear exactly which paintings were involved but one contemporary art specialist told the paper they would be extremely difficult to sell. “It is not at all easy to sell a Francis Bacon, large or small, without that getting to the ears of those who pore over such a rarified sector,” said the expert, speaking on condition of anonymity. El Pais said police from a specialist arts and antiques unit had opened an investigation into the heist.

olice in Spain have arrested a woman accused of trying to steal five babies from two different hospitals in less than eight hours disguised as a nurse. The 21-year-old was held after being stopped by the father of a new-

born she attempted to take from a hospital room in Valencia by claiming she needed to do a heel prick test on him. She fled the room but was tracked down to a toilet where she had hid to take off her fake nurse’s uniform - after two other failed attempts to steal children from the hospital. Police discovered she had tried to take two other new-borns from a medical centre in Cartagena 170 miles south earlier in the day. The scares happened within an eighthour period on Sunday at Cartagena General Hospital and a second public hospital in Valencia called La Fe.

women’s rights organisation in Spain has lodged a complaint against a female judge who “humiliated” an alleged rape victim by asking whether she had tried closing her legs. The magistrate reportedly interrupted the alleged victim’s account, asking: “Did you close your legs properly? Did you close off your female organs?”The Clara Campoamor association said it had reported Judge Maria del Carmen Molina to the national judicial council (CGPJ), demanding that she be suspended or dismissed over the interrogation which took place in a special women’s violence court in February. “This question is offensive, degrading and humiliating,” said Blanca Estrella, president of the Clara Campoamor association. “It shows a complete lack of professional rigour and ethical treatment of the victim."

housands of Spaniards have taken part in a protest rally in favour of the traditional but controversial pastime of bullfighting. The protesters marched through the streets of the eastern city of Valencia to protest at local authority bans applied in some parts of the country. Famous names from the ritualistic sport attending the march were Enrique Ponce and Julian Lopez “El Juli” Escobar. Both joined another famous fighter, Jose Antonio Morante Camacho, better known as Morante de la Puebla, at the gathering. Participants held aloft banners proclaiming the practice as a key element of cultural expression. “The bullfighting world is aware of the problem and maltreatment we are suffering at the hands of a part of the political class,” said Morante de la Puebla.

“We are here to say, this is our life, it’s a tradition,” he bellowed.

Ponce meanwhile read a tract in defence of bullfighting, insisting the tradition has for centuries been an integral part of Spanish culture even if some refuse to accept it as such. Hundreds of thousands oppose plan for bullfighting courses in Spanish schools. And he urged that “toreros”, or bullfighters, be treated with the same respect as those pursuing “artistic” activities. The morning had seen a lower-key protest against bullfighting with some 20 semi-clad activists who had splattered themselves with red ink to symbolise the bulls’ suffering demanding the practice be abolished. Spain is split overall on the issue. Six years ago the largely autonomous regional Catalan goverment banned “corridas”, as the pastime is known in the region.

Some cities run by leftist administrations including Madrid and Valencia also recently cut subsidies for bullfighting.

great success and we really enjoyed it. The children were remarkably well behaved and the teachers must be commended for their patience and calm control of such a large group of over-excited little ones. Buster was the star of the show of course and was rightfully rewarded with several biscuits.

We hope to do more presentations for some of the older pupils in future and will also be arranging some animalthemed projects to maintain the momentum of their new interest in animals.

News Update

L

ast month I visited our local school in Cómpeta, “Candida Lara”, with Juan Molino from Naturvets, Julie Lillie, who is one of our Action for Animals volunteers, and Buster, Julie's labrador.

The purpose of our visit was to give a presentation to the children explaining the importance of caring for animals.

The day got off to a great start when we arrived during playtime, as all the children were running around the playground letting off steam. Dogs aren't usually allowed on the school premises, so there was much excitement when they spotted Buster and chaos ensued as they all rushed over to greet him. With scores of tiny little hands all wanting to pat him and fuss him, Juan's work began immediately, as he gently asked them not to crowd the dog and showed them the correct way to approach him. Buster took it all in his stride and was unflinching and placid throughout.

We were taken into the school hall before a riot started and Juan set up the slide show for

the presentation, which was for three classes of boisterous children all under 6 years of age.

After introducing ourselves, I gave a brief explanation of our work at Action for Animals, followed by the main presentation, given by Juan, and a brief question and answer session. The room was filled with “oohs” and “aahs” as various photos of cute puppies and kittens were shown on the screen, but the part they enjoyed most was when Julie took to the stage with Buster. The children were brought up a few at a time to stroke him and there were squeals of delight as they filed onto the stage where the beautifully behaved Buster waited to receive their attention.

A few children had never touched a dog before and it was quite an exciting experience for them.

One young boy in particular was a little apprehensive at the prospect, but after some gentle encouragement from his teacher he plucked up the courage to approach Buster and was clearly delighted at having done so. I have to say, it was really quite moving!

His owner has decided he can no longer keep him, so now he's desperate for someone to adopt him or even foster him for a while. He has a sweet nature, is very playful and gets on well with other dogs. If you can help, please contact me.

We started nearly 25 years ago as

plumbing installers and providing maintenance. Most jobs were home repairs. Now our offer is much more complete. We perform all kinds of installations including: water, gas, swimming pools, air conditioning, solar energy, facility surveys, we perform installations for the town hall, community blocks, etc. Although, we now cover a wide range of services, we continue to serve our smaller customers, fixing the everyday problems, as we did when we first started. This policy has worked for us and has allowed us to remain solvent through the crisis. ¿Dónde aprendiste la profesión y como has continuado formándote?

Mi padre también trabajaba en esta profesión. Fue el primero que empezó a realizar instalaciones de fontanería en Cómpeta y alrededores hace sobre cincuenta años. Él me enseñó a mí y a muchos de los instaladores que han continuado la profesión durante todos estos años. Yo aprendí desde muy pequeño, solía acompañar a mi padre en sus trabajos por las tardes,

Años después, una vez abierto nuestro negocio y debido a la transformación urbanística que experimentó Cómpeta, me formé y especialicé en otros tipos de instalaciones como piscinas, calefacción, aire acondicionado, equipos solares, etc. Mientras, estudiaba inglés en la escuela de idiomas de Vélez-Málaga, algo que también intuí necesario y que ha facilitado enormemente el servicio que ofrecemos a nuestros clientes.

Where did you train to be a plumber and what did you do after your training?

My father worked in this profession. Around 50 years ago he was the first man to start plumbing in Cómpeta. He taught me and many other installers who have also continued in the profession over the years. I learned from a very young age and after school in the afternoons I used to accompany my father to work. Years later, after opening the business and due the expansion and transformation Cómpeta had experienced, I trained and specialized in other types of services such as swimming pools, heating, air conditioning and solar equipment, etc. I also studied English at the language school in Vélez-Málaga.

I believed this would be necessary and has indeed greatly improved the service we can provide to our customers ¿Cuánto tiempo has tenido tu propio negocio en competa? ¿Qué cambios ha habido desde que abriste por primera vez?

Nosotros empezamos nuestro negocio propio en 1.992. Mi mujer y yo arrancamos con este proyecto en una situación de crisis profunda, fuimos ganando clientela poco a poco en aquellos tiempos difíciles con nuestra política de buen hacer, material de calidad y precios razonables.

How long have you had your own business In Competa and what changes have there been since you first opened?

We started our own business in 1992. My wife and I started the business at a time of deep crisis.

We gained customers slowly in those difficult times but with our policy of great craftsmanship, quality material and reasonable prices, over time business improved and grew. We surrounded ourselves with good workers and some of them are still with us today. Myself and our workers regularly attend training courses which increases our expertise and keeps us up to date on any innovations that come to our line of business.

Nosotros, además de realizar trabajos de instalación y reparación a domicilio, tenemos tienda de venta de todo tipo de material relacionado con la labor que realizamos. As well as offering an installation and repair service, we have a shop that sells all kinds of materials related to the work that we do. If our clients prefer to do the job themselves, we supply the necessary material and we can provide the expert advice on installation.

¿Tienes algún plan de futuro para la empresa en Cómpeta?

Lo principal en nuestros planes de futuro es seguir manteniendo satisfecha a nuestra excelente clientela, ello lo conseguimos con tres bases: 1. Continuar actualizando nuestra formación, estando en permanente contacto con los técnicos de las empresas proveedoras y asistiendo regularmente a cursos de formación.

2. Adquirir siempre productos de alta calidad (esto no es fácil en estos tiempos donde a menudo fabricas nacionales se cierran para reconvertirse en almacenes de distribución de material importado). En este apartado no ahorramos costes ni esfuerzos porque pensamos que la calidad en los componentes es fundamental para la terminación de un buen trabajo.

2. Always to acquire high quality products (this is not easy in these times where often national factories have closed and have converted into distribution warehouses with imported material). We spare no cost or effort as we believe that the

3. Optimize the services we offer in order to maintain our initial policy of reasonable prices. What other services do you provide apart from Plumping?

We focus on all water-related services. We of course provide plumbing and all kind of leak repairs, desadores, drainage, heating, and air conditioning, installation of solar equipment for hot water, central heating and heated swimming pools. Also for swimming pools we can offer acclimatisation by heat pump or solar panels, install pool covers, salt water chlorination equipment, everyday pool equipment and infinity systems. We also offer services for customers who prefer to build their own Jacuzzi on site, etc.

Our advantage over other companies that come from outside to perform the same jobs as us is our proximity. Other companies often serve clients who have spent large sums of money on sophisticated equipment but once installed "and charged" and then not serviced.

Once the work is done, they often lose the link with the client. We have been in business for 25 years in the same place with the same staff, the same schedule and the same phone numbers; throughout these years we have seen many companies come and go. Some of them have left no trace; we want to be here in Cómpeta for many years to come.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Basically in the same place, it is a business without plans for big expansion, more important for us is to keep our customers close (most of our customers are also good friends) and focus our efforts on improving service everyday without raising prices more than necessary.

CHILI LEISURE An interview with Karen Parnell

1.Why did you move to Spain?

I fell in love with the sport of triathlon seven years ago when I did my first triathlon after joining a triathlon club in the UK. This was the first time I experienced being coached and was fascinated by the process. I decided to become a triathlon coach and was trained by the British Triathlon Federation (BTF). I coached part time and loved every minute of it. It was at this point I started to wonder if I could change profession and work in the health and fitness industry and one day set up a triathlon camp in Spain. This was the start of my journey to move to Spain which has taken 5 years of planning, training and studying. I left my job as marketing director of a large engineering company and trained to be a personal trainer. After qualifying as a personal trainer I worked in various gyms such as David Lloyd, to ensure I was able to coach and train athletes and clients to a high level. During this period I was constantly learning

and gaining qualifications and experience in teaching spin, pilates, aquacise, HIIT and functional training. I also became a qualified sports & holistic massage therapist, kineseology tape practitioner and nutritionist.

2.Why did you choose C贸mpeta?

After retraining as a coach and personal trainer we set about searching for a location to base our business from in Southern Spain. Triathletes tend to train hard over the winter so where ever we based ourselves had to have good weather all year round.

Friends of ours had visited C贸mpeta so we started our search here. We soon found that C贸mpeta was ideal for our business ideas as it has a fantastic swimming pool, great mountain cycling, a sports hall and easy access to areas to sea swim and run. The area also hosts some excellent triathlon, cycling and running events on the coast and near the various lakes

in Andulasia.

3.Tell me about the Bed and Breakfast business you have set up?

Our ideas for the business has evolved over the many times we came to C贸mpeta to view properties and is now centred around a bed & breakfast with leisure and training facilities. We have a two guest rooms, a therapy room, outdoor gym, spin studio and endless pool. This allows us to create packages for guests to enjoy and also train the local community. We offer a time table of spin and circuit training group exercise sessions as well as one to one personal training.

I have coached many triathletes in the past five years, some of which competed for Team GB (AG) at European and world championships. I also worked at the 2012 Olympics in the athletes village and athletes lounge on race days. I supported the global triathletes with their training and logistics. I was able to support such athletes as Javier Gomez and the Brownlee brothers during this time. Sean is also a triathlon coach and is a qualified International Triathlon Union (ITU) race official.

Since then I have worked in various gyms as a personal trainer and group exercise coach.

These gyms include David Lloyd, Nuffield Health and Aspire.

6.You have moved here with your partner does he run the Bed and Breakfast and fitness side of things with you?

Sean runs the bed and breakfast whilst I concentrate on coaching and training. We do however support one another on all areas of the business. Sean's sales background and my marketing experience and qualifications have certainly helped.

8.Do you have any plans for the future for the businesses?

We hope to offer more group exercise classes in 2016 including Metafit HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and TRX group sessions. With our new bespoke crossfit rig built by local firm Tejiero we will also over more exciting personal training options on top of battle ropes, TRX, ViPR and resistance training.

7.How are both businesses going at this early stage?

We have been surprised at how quickly all aspects of the business have picked up. We have had many guests from many countries since we opened the rooms in November after a complete refurbishment. Our property was not originally a bed & breakfast and had no fitness facilities so we had to have extensive building work. This refurbishment included adding en-suite bathrooms, a brand new therapy room, endless pool and outdoor gym.

Longer term we would love to run events for the local community, especially children's events to get more people to take part in multisports such as Aquatlons (swim then run), Duathlons (run-bikerun) and Triathlons (swim, bike, run).

9.What do you do in your free time to have fun?

I like to race triathlons and Sean and I like to take advantage of the local area by hiking the various routes around C贸mpeta.

How long have you had your own business In Competa and what changes have there been since you first opened?

I have had my own business since I was young and the changes over time have been both extensive and successful and can be attributed to the increase in tourism in Cómpeta over time.

The growth in tourism has ultimately given us a better standard of living. In order to sustain the businesses in Competa we need people both daily visitors and those that live here permanently.

The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe.

Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet.

Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009.

For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question.

Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show.

The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32.

While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed.

Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less.

Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010.

The 2013 rate was just 3.3.

There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year.

Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005.

Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available.

Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013.

Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH What on Earth?

I

n our constant quest at the Garden Centre for pest control without harmful chemicals we have, at last, managed to get hold of diatomaceous earth, or DE as it is commonly known. What on earth is that, you might ask!

Diatomaceous Earth is a creamywhite talc-like powder, a soft, crumbly, porous sedimentary deposit that is actually the fossilised remains of marine phytoplankton, algae-like plants called diatom. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica. Over a long period of time the diatoms accumulate in the sediment of rivers, lakes and seas. Nowadays, we mine those silica deposits. Silica is very common in nature and makes up 26% of the earth's crust by weight; it is the second most abundant element found in soil.

Some types of silica we would recognise are rocks, sand, clay, glass, asbestos, quartz and emeralds. It is also abundant in

plants and plays a role in their growth and development. Its composition is approx. 78% silicon, 10% calcium, 5% sodium, 3% magnesium, 2% iron and several other trace elements.

Significantly, whilst an effective and safe insecticide, it also feeds and nourishes our plants at the same time.

Diatomaceous Earth is not poisonous and it does not have to be consumed by insects to be effective. Interestingly, because of its porous and abrasive nature, it works as an insectide on any bugs with an exoskeleton – things like ants, fleas, ticks, cockroaches, bed bugs, spiders, earwigs, aphids, thrips, scale insect, beetles, scorpions, slugs and snails. It causes the insects to dry out and die by absorbing all the fats and oils from the cuticle of the exoskeleton and then, literally, sucking the insect dry. It may sound rather macabre but, dehydration is quick and death is, apparently, rather rapid! It is not

harmful to mammals, including humans, because we have an internal skeleton with a layer of skin to protect us.

We can eat it; in fact, we do eat it – probably without knowing – because there are thousands of non-pesticide products that contain food-grade diatomaceous earth. Things like toothpastes, skin-care products, medicines, water filters, paints and food and beverages. Many grains, for instance, are stored with diatomaceous earth because it stops bugs from eating the grain and it is used as a clarifier for both wines and beer Diatomaceous Earth has several benefits. Insects cannot build up a resistance to it, as is the case with many chemicals. It does not lose its effectiveness; as long as rain does not wash it away, it is working. And, as long as it is kept dry, its shelf life is infinite. It is 100% natural and is, thus, harmless to ourselves, children

to have around bees or in their hives, so use it cautiously. Bees are said to avoid it but do not dust DE onto flowers and never use it when bees are around – so apply it late evening. Use sensibly, and only where needed. If you have some sort of infestation in a fruit tree, for instance, spray/dust the tree late evening and wrap it in an old sheet, sealing it tight. Leave for a couple of days, then hose down the tree; the DE will wash away, providing a liquid fertiliser for your tree at the same time and keeping the bees safe.

And a final tip for smelly shoes!

Dust DE in them and, magically, overnight all those horrible odours disappear!

Just sprinkle it in their bedding, leave overnight, then wash to remove. It can also be applied direct to the pet´s skin, leave for a day or two to have effect, then shampoo it away. It is also used to treat mites in chickens. There are people that take food-grade DE internally; silica is required by bones, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels and most of our vital organs.

Please note that there are different grades of DE; that used for swimming pool filters can be dangerous. Exercise common sense as always. DE powder is extremely fine; try to avoid breathing it in. Large scale inhalation can cause irritation in nasal passages and lungs, with coughing and shortness of breath, especially in asthmatics. Once the powder has settled, it will not cause any problem.

have an insect problem. It can be sprinkled, very finely, onto ants' nests, cockroach runs and in doorways where insects may be entering. Sprinkle it around your plants to prevent slug/snail damage; around pots to kill/prevent vine weevil and even directly onto plants with aphid/scale insect infestations. It´s a good one, for instance, to kill off the cochineal beetle that is sucking dry our prickly pears. It will be effective until heavy rain washes it away. If you prefer, it can also be diluted in water and sprayed onto plants.

Now to the nitty-gritty – what about our beneficial insects, our bees, lacewings, ladybirds, earthworms? Well, research shows that earthworms are not affected by DE; the worms' gooey mucous coating that helps them glide through the soil protects it.

Equally, the furry coating of bees helps to protect them from the cutting action of the powder.

However, it is not a desirable thing

AXALON CHOIR On Saturday 12th March, Axalon Choir - composed of Coral Coraxalia from La Viñuela and One Voice from Competa - under the direction of D. Eusebio Pita, participated in VI Choir Festival "Granada Winters". The concert was sponsored by The Literary and Artistic Centre of Granada and organized by the Federico Garcia Lorca Choir, under the direction of D. Algis Zaboras. The event was very well received by the public and the critics. There was a special mention of Axalon Choir, which has been invited to take part in VII International Choir Festival, season 2017 of "Granada Winters" with the performance of "Carmina Burana".

The Choir has also been invited by the choir 'Iris Ensemble' from Padua -Italy- to perform in a concert in that city in 2017. In the next few weeks Axalon Choir will be inviting new singers with experience and or musical knowledge to join them to take part in these projects. CAS FUND RAISING NEWS The Punta Lara Bar is proud to present their next Costa Animal Society (CAS) quiz on Friday, April 22 at 7.30 for 8.00pm. Look out for the Costa Animal Society (CAS) at Nerja's annual Residents' Day on Sunday, April 17, where volunteers will present a tombola and information booth, as well as a bar featuring English food. Residents' Day is always a good day out for the entire family with a full calendar of entertainment organised by the town hall. Visit the numerous stalls and food venues put on by local clubs, charities and small businesses and sample the culture and dishes from a variety of foreign residents who live in our area. Residents' Day is held each year in Plaza España behind the Nerja Town Hall.

NERJA BOAT YARD The only two boatyards in Nerja could be heading for closure within months.The conflict involving the owner of the land, Sociedad Azucarera Larios S. A. (SALSA), the Junta de Andalucía and Nerja Town Hall started in 2014. The boatyards, which have been on the El Playazo beach for more than 20 years, along with four chiringuitos (beach bars) that are also located in the same area, are allegedly infringing the Ley de Costas (coastal law) by invading public right of way without permission. They are also all situated on protected coastal land.
