WELCOME TO 2020 Happy New Year and welcome to an exciting new season of programming at The Grand.

We have more than 50 events listed in these pages and more than 30 of these shows are playing or performing at the venue for the very first time.

Our 20:20 vision is to provide a creative programme that offers new discoveries for all age groups of our community - whether it is introducing young children to theatre for the very first time, persuading independent bands to bring their tour to Clitheroe, or offering tried and trusted entertainment to our most established concert goers.

Creative participation is high on our agenda too. More than 500 of you join us on a weekly basis at our creative classes: The Grand Choir (Monday), Be My Band (Monday / Thursday), Let’s Dance (Wednesday), Streetfeet (Thursday), Rock and Learn (Friday) and Ella Shaw’s Academy of the Arts (Saturday morning).

All these projects are going great guns, but we do still have capacity for anyone interested in joining these activities. To read more about them, see pages 6 - 9 or get in touch with us at hello@thegrandvenue.co.uk .

Throughout 2020 The Grand will also be partnering and assisting in the production of a number of local arts festivals. This starts on February 8th, with the Snowmoon Festival, a celebration of light and the coming of spring, in which many local venues will be participating. Make a note in your calendars for: The Ribble Valley Jazz Festival (1st weekend of May), Cloudspotting Festival, Gisburn Forest (June 19-21), King of the Castle Skate Comp (June 27) and Clitheroe Choir Festival (July 10-12). Watch out too for the advent of a new festival, Hope Streets, which will be produced by young creatives under the leadership of Curious Minds, over the summer months.

We would like to thank all our partners, audiences and participants for your continued support and reserve the biggest shout for our volunteer team who help make your experiences with us all the more enjoyable.

BE MY BAND + BE MY BAND XL - MONDAY & THURSDAY Time: 4.30pm - 9.30pm Price: £150 per 12 week term (Sibling discounts available)

The Grand’s music tuition project is no longer the domain of just 9-18 year olds. After much demand, we have now formed all ages bands too! So ‘Be My Band’ is now open to anyone who wants to improve their musicianship while playing in a band. The course is led by experienced music teacher and multi-instrumentalist Marc Winstanley and runs over a 12-week period. The bands also get the opportunity of performing on The Grand’s main stage and experiencing the thrill of recording in a professional studio.

THE GRAND CHOIR - MONDAY

Time: 7.00pm - 9.15pm.

Registration Fee: £30.00 per year (£10.00 U18’s) Price: £5.00 per week.

The Grand Choir meet every Monday for rehearsals in our auditorium. They are a very active singing group, regularly performing at a variety of functions and hosting at least three concerts per year at the venue itself. They are led by the very talented choirmaster and composer Daniel Adams and administered by Geraldine Woodworth.

In July 2018, The Grand Choir took a lead role in the creation of the Clitheroe Festival of Choirs, an event that will be repeated in July 2020.

The Grand Choir prides itself on meeting in a relaxed atmosphere for some social singing.

It is about enjoyment, community and participation and the doors are always open for new members. All ages welcome.

LET’S DANCE - WEDNESDAY

Beginners: 9.30am - 10.30am Improvers: 10.30am - 12 noon Price: £6.00 per session or £7.00 for both sessions per week.

Refreshments included.

‘Let’s Dance’ is a communal and friendly session, open to all. be it beginners, intermediate or more experienced.

Led by the experienced dance instructor Victoria Heys, Let’s Dance takes place every Wednesday morning during term time.

Cafe open from 9 - 12 noon.

Not only a great way to improve your dancing, Let’s Dance is also a great way to stay fit and healthy, have fun and meet new people. We arrange social events and special occasion dances.

STREETFEET - THURSDAY Streetfeet is an energetic ‘street dance’ session where young people have fun, make new friends and develop their co-ordination and dancing skills in an encouraging and inclusive environment.

ROCK ‘N LEARN - FRIDAY

£4.50 per family (not per child) Free for babies up to 17 weeks or with recognised special educational needs.

This class uses brain-boosting activities to help develop creative, happy and empowered children, using upbeat music, puppets, singing, dancing and stories. Sessions are very popular and participants are recommended to arrive 10 minutes before the start time, (especially for first two sessions), to avoid disappointment.

FAMILY SKATE SESSIONS:

Clitheroe Skate Park opened in 2006 and since has proven to be an extremely popular asset to the young people of the Ribble Valley and the wider community. It includes a mini ramp, street section with recently added new obstacles, a 7ft bowl in the deep as well as a 3ft in the shallow.

From beginner to advanced level the skate park is open to all from sunrise to sunset.

Located in the Clitheroe Castle grounds.

Age: Open to all (no register or consent forms required).

These sessions are open to families of any size and ability. An instructor will be on hand to get you rolling, help you out and help you support each other. These sessions are designed to give you the chance to experience the skatepark and learn how to use it safely. Boards are provided to use during the sessions if needed. Feel free to bring your own. All sessions are weather dependent. Check the Skatepark’s Facebook page for dates.

MOBILE PARK:

A unique opportunity to offer an alternative sport engagement for schools. All equipment is provided and sessions are taught by a qualified skate coach.

The mobile skate park is a great tool to help encourage first time skaters to develop their skills and learn something new. All boards, helmets and pads are provided.

Supporting Talent, Supporting Community, Supporting Charity The Event is a biennial charity talent show organised by the young people of Ribble Valley secondary schools: Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, Ribblesdale High, St Augustines RC High and Bowland High.

All the schools run their own auditions and talent shows before entering contestants in to the inter-school competition that takes place at The Grand over three nights.

The event raises money for The Grand’s overseas charity The Solomon Project as well as two chosen charities chosen by The GRAB Forum. This year the school’s will be supporting Nightsafe (a charity supporting homeless people aged 16-24 years in Blackburn), and The Climate Coalition (UK’s largest group of people dedicated to action against climate change to create a cleaner, greener future) as well as The Solomon Project (feeding children a school meal each day, allowing them to stay in education, in Eldoret, Kenya).

Wednesday 12 February An Evening with Colonel Andy Salmon:

A Journey Through Conflict

Andy Salmon was the last British General in Basra.

The Clitheroe Royal Grammar School old boy enjoyed a highly distinguished 36-year career in the British Army.

He served with distinction in Northern Ireland, Iraq, the Falkland Islands and Africa.

Now the former Major General is returning home to Clitheroe, where he was educated, to reflect on an emotional journey, including three lifechanging tours of war-torn Iraq.

Tuesday 18 February Minecraft Workshop Minecraft enthusiasts will love this workshop from Jam Coding. Children will be set different challenges and learn new skills. Great for Minecraft experts as well as total beginners, this will be a lot of fun whilst also building problem solving, teamwork and creativity skills using the Minecraft platform. Thursday 20 February Robotics Workshop Work in teams to code a robot to complete various challenges including navigating through a maze and competing in Jam Coding’s robot wars competition.

This workshop will use a variety of coding skills and languages bringing your code to life in hands-on, practical tasks.

Sunday 23 February Jack and the Beanstalk Fee Fi Fo Fum! It’s a giant of a show, we’d love you to come! Winner of the ‘Best Family Show’ award at the International Youth Arts Festival 2019, this retelling of a classic fairytale from Lyngo Theatre comes with lots of surprises and beautiful images, as Jack sells his cow for 5 magic beans and finds himself in the land above the clouds.

RECORDING STUDIO The Grand Studio is a state of the art, modern recording facility located beneath the main auditorium. We offer commercial quality recording services, mixing and mastering as well as a full, multi-track live recording direct from auditorium. We can cater for all projects from voice over work to full album productions.

Our studio specification features outboard gear from Neve, Avalon, PMC, Manly in addition to its’ SSL AWS900 mixing desk. We operate a Pro Tools HD system, the industry standard for high quality recording and have two spacious, air-conditioned live rooms, perfect for live tracking sessions and commercial release projects.

Our main entrance on York Street is ramped and we have a large lift enabling access to all levels.

Wheelchair accessible toilets are located in our main auditorium and studio level.

We offer a limited number of dedicated spaces in our venue which can be reserved if you have access needs or for wheelchair users. These are available for both seating and general admission (standing) events, please note during busy events there will be other members of the audience in close proximity. Some preparation may be required to ensure all is set up for you on arrival, and therefore we ask that you let our Box Office know of any requirements when booking your ticket.

Guide Dogs are also welcome, but please let us know in advance by contacting the Box Office and we can ensure that a bowl of water is available and accessible seating is in place.

For visitors with hearing issues, an induction loop can be provided throughout the venue. Visitors to the venue can use this by switching their hearing aid to the “T” position.
