The theme for The Grand Season Family this month is courage. As I reflect on where we’ve been over the last two months—and where we need to go—it’s going to take courage for each of us to rebuild our lives. It’s also going to take courage to help our children feel safe and confident in their futures.

Lately, I have found this quote comforting: You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. I can take the next thing that comes along.” —Eleanor Roosevelt If your family is anything like mine, the last eight weeks have probably been some of the most challenging of your life. As I write this, there has been no official word on when Arizona will re-open for business. While I know people are suffering from COVID-19, I’m beginning to think many more

are suffering from the impact of not knowing what’s next.

I believe Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote is spot on, because after all we have been through, I know we can face the challenges ahead with conviction and confidence—and with the support of one another.

Webster defines courage as the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous. While the definition is true, it lacks the substance of emotional and physical struggles that are necessary to truly embody courage.

In order to overcome difficult times, one must build courage that is bigger than their fears.

Recognize Your Fears Coming to terms, with your fears, is a very difficult thing. However, once you’re able to recognize what you’re fearful of then you can change your outlook. It’s not easy to admit, and revisiting tragedy can be overwhelming, but admitting what causes you fear is the first step to overcoming those obstacles.

Talk About It Discussing your fears is the first step to building a course of action – involve your friends, family and even professionals. Develop ‘framing’ techniques that will help you break down issues into more digestible realities. Be prepared for your emotions to unravel, but recognize that revealing your true emotions is part of the healing process.

Believe in Yourself It is important to believe in yourself and what you stand for, as we all are a reflection of our thoughts. If you believe that you’re bigger than the problem, then you will build the strength necessary to face your fears.

Accept the Good and Bad It’s imperative you accept the good and bad days – never allow your bad days to define who you are. HERE’S A TIP Stay ahead of the drain: Pour a tea kettle of boiling water down the drain once a month, or if you notice the drain slowing. The hot water can break up material collecting inside the drain. Half a cup of baking soda added to the water will absorb any odors that are building.

A hanging shoe rack is a handy place to keep office supplies and school supplies for the whole family. Pencils, markers, assignment cards, and even papers. You can give each person a row, or label the pockets.

LIVING WITH COURAGE Courage will help your children grow Since many children may live safe and protected lives, you may think they do not have the opportunity or the need to be courageous.

However, the last eight weeks have taught all of us courage is a trait we all need.

As your family has navigated this COVID-19 crisis, I’m confident you’re entire family has exercised courage. The reality is learning to be courageous is an essential aspect of a child’s character development.

Being brave in the face of fear, and doing what needs to be done– even when it is really hard–are both examples of courage. Need help explaining courage to your kids? Keep reading.

What is courage?

Children need courage when they: Try new things even if they are afraid, like learning to ride a bike or entering a new social situation.

Keep trying to master a new skill even when they are frustrated or other children laugh at their attempts.

Do the ‘right’ thing in difficult situations, like standing up for another child who is being bullied.

Admit to mistakes, like owning up to breaking a neighbor’s window while playing ball, and then apologizing and offering to help clean up and pay for the damage.

Having courage helps children to persevere against challenges, and in the process it raises their self-esteem. When children feel good about themselves, and see that they have the personal power to make courageous choices, they are more likely to lead personally satisfying and successful lives.

How can parents help children to show courage?

Parents are their children’s first and most important teachers and have a powerful influence on their development. You can:

Make sure your children understand what courage is.

Define it and point it out when you, they or someone else demonstrates it. Use news stories, television programs, movies, or books as learning tools.

Use everyday situations for your children to demonstrate courage.

Encourage them to: • stand up to peer pressure, • refuse to go along with the crowd when the crowd is doing something wrong or dangerous, • participate in a new class, • master new skills and persist in the face of frustration.

Praise your children when they demonstrate courage.

Highlight the positive!

Use mistakes as learning opportunities.

Do not use mistakes as a reason to punish. Create a positive atmosphere that will encourage your child to face and admit their mistakes openly and honestly. Teach them what they can do differently and how they can make amends.

Be a source of support for your children.

All people, and especially children, can better demonstrate courage when they know they are not alone and that someone “has their back.”

Teach your children that sometimes asking for help takes courage.

The word courage has a Latin root, cor, which means heart. The heart has long been a metaphor used to depict inner strength.

And I’m not sure if there’s anything that requires more courage and inner strength these days than to love.

To open your heart to someone, knowing that it might get broken.

To share your deepest needs and desires, not knowing if they will be met.

To love, even when that act of love may not be reciprocated, at least not in the same way it was given.

It feels like a leap of faith to love someone deeply. There are no guarantees. And yes, sometimes love hurts. That’s why love takes courage.

Here’s what being courageous in love can look like: Saying I love you…and meaning it.

Being the one to initiate a hug or a touch.

Forgiving without anyone asking to be forgiven.

Having the difficult conversations.

Being vulnerable.

Telling our partners what we need to feel loved, fulfilled and cared for.

Sharing our dreams… and fears.

Feeling our emotions (rather than stuffing them down or running from them).

Being honest…mostly with ourselves.

Setting healthy boundaries.

Remaining in our own business and taking responsibility for what is ours.

Even…walking away in love when the relationship is complete.

Asking for help when you don’t know the answers.

Steps to strengthen your bond!

Don’t bad mouth your spouse in front of your children or anyone else. Enough said.

Invest in friendships and group activities that support your marriage and avoid those that don’t. If a friend, either married or single, discourages you in the area of your marriage, it’s time to rethink how much time you spend with that friend.

Thank your spouse for what he/she does to support you and your family. Respect and affirm him/her. We all like to be appreciated and know that what we do doesn’t go unnoticed. An attitude of gratitude creates a positive environment.

Date your spouse (get away when you can). Date nights can keep you connected as a couple, which is especially good if you have busy schedules and/or kids. Trips away as a couple are great too.

Keep a couples’ journal. Write love notes back and forth to each other in a journal. This is especially good if either of you has trouble openly expressing your feelings.

Let your kids know your spouse comes first, and that you are a team. It’s important for your children to see your relationship with your spouse is a priority. You were together before they arrived, and you should be together when they’re grown.

Set phone reminders. If you have a smartphone or smartwatch, set alarms to remind you to text your spouse when you’re apart.

Watermelon Sangria

INGREDIENTS 1 large watermelon 1 (750-ml) bottle white wine, chilled 2 c. white rum 1 c. seltzer 1/3 c. lime juice (from about 6 limes) 2 limes, thinly sliced 2 c. assorted fresh or frozen fruit, such as pineapple, blueberries, and strawberries DIRECTIONS Slice off the top third of the watermelon lengthwise (save for later use) and score fruit with a knife. Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, scoop out watermelon and transfer to blender.

Blend watermelon until smooth. (If desired, strain seeds.)

Add white wine, rum, seltzer, and lime juice and stir until combined, then add limes and fruit. Refrigerate until chilled, about 2 hours, then serve.

Tequila Sunset

INGREDIENTS 1 c. ice 1 1/2 oz. tequila 4 oz. orange or grapefruit juice 1/2 oz. grenadine Maraschino cherry or mandarin, for garnish DIRECTIONS Fill serving glass with ice, tequila and juice. Add grenadine, garnish with cherry or mandarin and serve.

Blueberry Lemonade Margarita INGREDIENTS FOR THE SYRUP 1/4 c. granulated sugar 1/4 c. water 1/2 c. blueberries Zest of 1/2 lime FOR THE MARGARITA 2 tbsp. granulated sugar 2 tbsp. kosher salt 1 lemon, cut into wedges 8 oz. tequila 4 oz. triple sec 1 c. lemonade Ice

DIRECTIONS In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar and water and stir until sugar has dissolved. Add blueberries and lime zest and bring mixture to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer mixture until blueberries have burst, about 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and let cool 10 minutes, then strain mixture into a clean jar. Let cool completely.

On a small plate, stir together sugar and salt. Rim each glass with a lemon wedge, then dip in sugar salt mixture.

1. Face reality

GROWTH

Courageous people accept that they are not in control of things, because they understand that life is a series of fortunate and unfortunate events where they don’t always get what they want or need. They acknowledge problems, and don’t run away from them. They reflect on the things that have hindered their success, and are never in denial because they know denial produces more suffering and disappointment.

2. Confront fear

One of the most courageous stories of all time is the story of David and Goliath in the Bible. It illustrates the magnificent power of courage in action. David was a shepherd boy who defeated Goliath, a giant warrior.

How did David accomplish such a great task? He armed himself with courage to confront Goliath by reaching into his bag and slinging one of his stones at Goliath’s head. Impossibly, the stone hit Goliath’s forehead, making him fall to the ground.

Then David took Goliath’s sword to kill the giant, and victory was his.

Many of our problems and challenges are a direct result of the fear that’s within us. It is up to us whether we let fear take control and paralyze us, or take courage and radically confront it. You can learn a lot from fear, things about you and other people. Fear can become a constructive lesson in your life as you act wisely and use it to your own benefit, like David did.

Courageous people trust themselves and tackle their problems directly by evaluating situations and taking action accordingly. They know that confronting their fears is the best strategy to get over them, and they do so in a timely manner. Experiencing fear is not something unusual to them nor something to be ashamed of. Even in the most difficult circumstances, when they feel afraid, they are brave and wisely employ their resources to obtain victory.

3. Have hope

Courageous people are hopeful. They are sustained by faith, and are confident that things will work out for them in one way or another. They can anticipate favorable and encouraging results by waiting expectantly.

They refrain from worrying, because it doesn’t produce anything positive. Hope is their source of strength to keep them going no matter what.

The anticipation of living and leading a better, brighter, and more meaningful life is one of their strongest desires.

4. Persevere through struggles

Courageous people don’t give up. They may fall, but they get up to fight again as many times as they need to. They keep moving.

They are very well aware that struggles

are only temporary, and that’s what keeps them waiting persistently. They visualize themselves conquering their struggles while passing through life’s storms. They avoid getting wrapped up in their own worlds and refuse to get into a pattern of negative thinking.

5. Don’t waste energy complaining

Courageous people may express their feelings about their challenges, but they do so without complaining. They are very well aware that complaining will not help them overcome their struggles. They keep their emotions in check and don’t allow worrying or negativity to filter through and create unnecessary stress that will rob them of their inner peace. They intelligently use their energy to focus on solutions.

6. Challenge themselves

Courageous people like to grow as individuals by stepping out of their comfort zone to learn new things and try new experiences that will take them to new heights and expand their horizons. As they grow and improve, they also enhance the lives of the people around them. Challenging themselves also provides them with a better understanding of what that they really want and need to achieve personally and professionally.

7. Keep an open mind

Courageous people don’t limit themselves by having tunnel vision. They instead opt to have a 360-degree view of their environment to broaden their vision and see the full range of possibilities and opportunities to find innovative solutions. They keep their minds open by welcoming new things and new ways of doing things. They are creative thinkers with a spark of joy. They recognize that the greatest satisfactions in life come from conquering their struggles.
