I can’t believe it’s May already! This month is extra special as my oldest son is graduating from high school! As I’ve reflected on his childhood, I am in awe at how quickly time has passed. Parenting him has been such an amazing journey! I know the job of a parent never ends, but I’m truly excited to see him thrive as he launches into adulthood.

When I think of May, my mind is flooded by all of the celebrations taking place this month, including Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Graduation, as well as Memorial Day. Logically, the theme of The Grand Season Family this month is CELEBRATE! Celebrating big events is something most of us do pretty well. But, I sometimes wonder if we celebrate the little things enough. Research shows celebrating the small moments in life not only improves your mental health, but your physical health, as well.

This quote from Alek Wek has challenged me to slow down and enjoy each moment with my sons.

“The most beautiful things are not associated with money; they are memories and moments. If you don’t celebrate those, they can pass you by.”

Creative ways to make the most of graduation

Trying to find a creative way to celebrate your graduate? Perhaps some of these ideas will make the process a little less stressful.

Announce the graduation to friends and family

Instead of using a pre-made template for a graduation announcement, try doing something more creative. Whether it is a graduation-themed candy bar wrapper or a customized magnet, there are many unique ways that students can announce their big day to friends and family.

Create a slide show of pictures of the graduate

Ask friends and family to contribute their photos of the graduate and compile a slideshow of pictures. The slideshow can be made on a home computer or you can get professional help. To make the viewing even more memorable, consider playing the graduate’s favorite song during the slideshow or adding funny, personal captions to the photos.

Thank teachers and mentors

Acknowledging teachers and mentors at graduation is very satisfying. Instead of just writing a thank you card, try something more creative, such as writing a poem, making a video, taking a silly photo or recording a song. Take this opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation to those who have helped make a difference in the graduate’s life.

Make a high school scrapbook

Making a scrapbook is a great way to remember high school friends and memories. It is also a good opportunity to organize old pictures and mementos. Writing directly on photos with an acid-free photo pen is also a fun way to caption photos in a scrapbook.

BREATHE Strategies to beat stress

Stress is just one of those things that’s impossible to avoid. I don’t know about you, but even when I’m doing things I love, my “type A” personality takes over, and I begin to try to bite off more than I can chew. This month with my oldest graduating high school and me preparing for a move, I thought I’d share some strategies to help reduce stress that I’ve heard from experts and through other publications.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment and test out one, or more of these ideas.

Phone a friend

A heart to heart with a friend can be just what you need to feel more at ease. Research has found social support can go a long way toward improving mental health and fighting stress by increasing resiliency and reducing risky behaviors.

Help someone else

Volunteering for a cause—whether it’s getting groceries for a sick friend or walking dogs at a local shelter—can make you feel better than whatever is stressing you out.

Research shows volunteering makes people feel more connected and can help reduce blood pressure.

Take a deep breath

To stop stress fast, just breathe in. Inhale deeply for four counts through your nose. Hold your breath for seven counts, then exhale for eight counts through your mouth. Concentrate on your pattern. Stress will quickly melt away.

Listen to your favorite music Regardless of your favorite genre, research found listening to music not only reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol, but it also helps improve immune system functionality.

Hit the museum

Take your mind off whatever ails you by surrounding yourself with visual beauty.

Hold something cold

Freaking out? Grab an ice cube or a cold drink. Feeling something cold in your hand immediately forces you to the present moment and can distract you from whatever is causing you stress.

Take a nap

Stress can impede your ability to get a good night’s sleep, but the opposite is also true—when you’re well rested you’re better able to cope with stressful situations.

Take a walk

A quick stroll outside can help reduce anxiety. Research found within five minutes of walking outside, participants reported an increase in self-esteem.

Laugh

Whether it’s watching a comedy on YouTube or a funny movie on Netflix, humor is the best way to make you feel better fast. Laughter reduces cortisol levels while increasing endorphin production.

Do something new

Technically, summer doesn’t start until June 21st, but many people consider Memorial Day to be the unofficial start of the season. This year, we celebrate the holiday on May 27th. Many families will heat up the grill, head to the beach or take in a big blockbuster movie.

But Memorial Day has the word “memorial” in it for a reason.

The holiday got started on May 30, 1868, when Union General John A. Logan declared the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Twenty years later, the name was changed to Memorial Day. On May 11, 1950, Congress passed a resolution

requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. President Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars.

1. Heat oven to 350 F. Grease 13-by-9-inch metal baking pan. Line pan with foil; grease foil.

2. In large bowl, with mixer at low speed, beat butter and sugar until mixed, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula.

Increase speed to high; beat until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low; beat in peanut butter, then egg until wellcombined, occasionally scraping bowl. Beat in flour just until evenly moistened (dough will be crumbly).

Beat in peanuts.

3. Reserve 2 cups dough. Press remaining dough evenly onto bottom of pan. Spread jam over dough in pan. With hand, press reserved dough into large chunks (about 3/4-inch) and sprinkle over jam, leaving spaces between chunks; do not pat down.

4. Bake 45 to 50 minutes, until golden. Cool completely in pan on wire rack.

5. When cool, transfer with foil to cutting board. Cut lengthwise into three strips, then cut each strip crosswise into eight bars. Yields 12 (2 bar) servings. * Each serving: 260 calories, 14g total fat (6g saturated), 31mg cholesterol, 165mg sodium, 31g total carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 5g protein.
