BE BRAVE Start over, one step at-a-time

Cultivating courage can be easy if we focus on putting in the time and energy to do it. Here are some of my favorite methods for developing courage on a daily basis:

1. Know yourself.

Take the time to examine who you are as a person, so you can figure out your strengths and the areas where maybe you need to grow a little to be courageous. Then, start working on those areas where you could use some improvement, or ask for help from others, so they can pick up the slack.

2. Take responsibility for your mistakes.

Look at how you live your life and where you have made errors. Own up to your mistakes, recognize them and try to learn from them.

Apologize as needed.

3. Forgive yourself.

No one is perfect. Strive for progress, not perfection. If you fall off the horse, be kind to yourself and get right back on.

4. Stand up for yourself.

Do not let others push you to think, act or feel in ways not right for you. Be brave in standing up for your wants and needs.

5. Don’t give up.

Remember, you will always have hope as long as you keep trying. When times get tough and your courage is waning; rest, recharge and then keep going. Fight for what you want and need.

6. Learn to say yes.

If something sounds appealing but it is a little scary, say yes and try it. At least put a toe in the water—you may discover something new about yourself.

7. On the other hand, learn to say “no.”

If something or someone makes you uncomfortable, rally your courage and say “no” to investing your time and energy.

8. Let go of what you can’t fix or change.

Even the most courageous of people can’t change what they can’t change. If you can’t fix something, let go of it, accept it as it is and invest your skills in areas that you can change or improve.

Though playtime may not pop to mind when you list the essentials for family happiness, it’s one of the best things you can share with your partner or kids.

“It connects family members to each other,” says marriage and family therapist Marie Hartwell-Walker, Ed.D. She recommends playing games of all kinds together, from Parcheesi to Ping-Pong, Tiddlywinks to Tag. “It teaches sportsmanship. It teaches vocabulary and communication, all those social skills—take your turn, be patient with a younger one, have a little respect for the older ones.”

The Benefits of Playing Games may even make kids more resilient. “It’s easier to face life’s setbacks if you’ve seen Mom shrug it off when she flubs a Frisbee toss, or Dad laugh when his golf ball lands in the water,” Marie says.

Game Time Another key to playing more? Put regular game nights on your calendar. “Institutionalizing anything makes sure it happens,” Marie says. What games are right for your family?

“The main thing I would stress is that they need to be age appropriate to the child, not the adult—and as the child grows, you should introduce more games that require the kid to stretch.”

Often the best games are spur-of-the-moment, improvisational games, such as where you play characters (spies, advice experts) over dinner or at the supermarket; spoken word games that involve rhymes or synonyms; even cleanup games (two points each time you toss a pair of undies in the hamper!).

In the end, it’s play itself, more than any specific game, that matters. “It’s the fact that this is family time,” Marie says.

To keep the kitchen garbage can from smelling, put spoiled food items in a bread bag, and then put it in the freezer until it’s time for the garbage collector.

Place recipes inside of a plastic bag so that they can be handled while cooking, but not dirtied. This is especially necessary with heirloom recipes.

Clogged drain? Don’t use chemicals. If you do encounter a clogged drain, try hot water and baking soda first. If that doesn’t work, try a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Avoid plumbing snakes, which can scratch the interior of your pipes.

To keep dirt from sticking to your dustpan, spray it lightly with furniture polish. Buff with a cloth so that it’s not wet.

Floor dirt will slide right off.

If you have a stubborn stain on the driveway or garage floor, try oven cleaner. Spray the spot and cover it (to keep pets out) and then let it sit for several hours.

Give it a good scrub and rinse with the hose. It might just do the trick!

INGREDIENTS 8 black tea bags, preferably English breakfast 5 tablespoons sugar 3 1/2 cups store-bought or homemade lemonade, divided 1 cup vodka, divided Lemon wheels (for garnish) DIRECTIONS Bring 3 1/2 cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan.

Remove from heat and add tea bags and sugar. Let steep 4 minutes. Discard tea bags and let cool slightly. Divide 3 cups tea between 2 ice cube trays; chill remaining 1/2 cup tea. Divide 3 cups lemonade between remaining 2 ice cube trays; chill remaining 1/2 cup lemonade. Freeze until solid.

Blend lemonade ice cubes, 1/2 cup vodka, and 1/2 cup lemonade in a blender until smooth. Transfer to a spouted liquid measuring cup or pitcher. Rinse blender jar and add tea ice cubes and remaining 1/2 cup tea and 1/2 cup vodka; blend until smooth.

Tilt a large glass to one side and fill halfway with lemonade mixture. While slowly returning glass to upright position, pour in frozen tea mixture to fill glass and create a swirl. Garnish with lemon wheels.

Add gin and Greek yogurt and fill shaker with ice. Shake until well chilled, about 15 seconds. Fill a rocks glass with crushed ice, then double-strain cocktail into it. Grind black pepper on top and garnish with the strawberry slice.
