FROM THE EDITOR It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I love Christmas decorations. The lights, ornaments and all of the festive ways people show their passion and personalities as they adorn their homes for the holidays.

As a parent, I know this time of year can be not only joyful, but also very stressful. I hope you have a chance to slow down and take a moment for yourself before the kids are on winter vacation, and your home is inundated with visiting family members from all over.

This month, The Grand Season Family is full of great ideas to make your holidays more festive and fun. Our monthly focus, however, is on the power of hope. I recognize that nobody has the perfect family nor has experienced an entire year full of joy and happiness, and that’s why hope is so important. Hope gives each of us the opportunity to live for tomorrow, knowing that while today may not be the highlight of your life— tomorrow may be just the day you’ve been dreaming about.

While so many of us are blessed to celebrate during the holidays, I hope you won’t forget those who are less fortunate. I have always believed “it is far better to give than receive” and I think you’ll find that to be true, when you give.

The makeup of the “typical� American family has changed a lot in the past 50 years; these days, you can find all kinds of different configurations. There are many reasons why a single parent might be raising a family by his/herself, starting with divorce, death and personal choice. Regardless of the reason, single parents face unique challenges that even the most well-adjusted, tuned-in parent can struggle with.

Here are some ways to increase your child’s happiness if you are a single parent:

Create routines.

Schedules and structure make things easier for children because they will know what to expect and that predictability will lower stress for everyone in the household.

Load up on love, praise and attention.

Many single parents deal with financial challenges and the guilt of not being able to provide everything you or your children might want. Your children do not need lavish gifts, upscale outings, expensive tennis shoes or to go to the priciest summer camp.

Instead, they need quality time, affection and memory-making experiences. Consider free or lowcost activities such as going on nature walks and taking pictures or baking several kinds of cookies on a weekend afternoon.

Before dinner each night or even once a week take time out to compliment each other.

Connect with similar families.

SAVOR THE FLAVOR Mason jars make magical gifts.

If you’re looking for a creative way for your family to spend time in the kitchen making gifts for those you love, try out some of these fun and simple recipes. All you need are a few basic ingredients you’ll probably find in your pantry and Mason jars.

To assemble the jars, all you do is measure the dry ingredients in the recipe and layer them in a jar. It couldn’t be simpler!

Decorate your jars with fabric and/or ribbon, and give it as a gift. Make sure to include instructions on how to turn the contents of the jar into a batch of cookies or a cup of hot chocolate.

Gingerbread Granola M&M Cookies

A Mason jar filled with pre-measured dry ingredients for M&M cookies! Give the jar as a gift, and all the recipient has to do is add the wet ingredients to the contents of the jar and bake. It’s fun and festive!

1/2 cup all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup M&M’s 1/3 cup light brown sugar packed 1/2 cup granulated sugar Assemble: Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a small bowl. Pour into the bottom of a 1-quart mason jar. Top the flour mixture with M&M’s, dropping them in lightly, so that they don’t sink into the flour. Top the M&M’s with brown sugar, and then granulated sugar. Seal with the lid and decorate with ribbon or fabric.

Recipe to include with the jar: Pour the contents of the jar into a large bowl and stir to combine. Add 1/2 cup of just barely melted (not hot) unsalted butter, 1 beaten egg, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Stir until combined.

Chill for 30 minutes.

Drop dough by the heaping tablespoon onto lined baking sheets and bake at 350°F for 8-10 minutes, until the centers of the cookies are just barely set.

4 cups old-fashioned oats 2 cups shredded coconut 1 cup raw slivered almonds 2 teaspoons ground ginger 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 2/3 cup coconut oil, melted and cooled 6 tablespoons pure maple syrup 3 tablespoons molasses 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup lightly salted roasted pistachios 1 cup sweetened dried cranberries 1 cup white chocolate chips Instructions: 1. Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 350°F. 2. In a large bowl, mix together oats, coconut, almonds, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and cloves. Pour coconut oil over mixture and stir.

Combine maple syrup, molasses and vanilla, pour over oat mixture and stir all ingredients until evenly coated.

3. Transfer granola onto a 13”x18”x1” rimmed sheet pan and spread into an even layer. Bake, stirring and flipping with a wooden spoon every 10 minutes, until the mixture turns a nice, even, golden brown, about 30 minutes total. Watch carefully for the last 10 minutes of baking time, checking every few minutes and stirring as necessary to prevent overbrowning.

4. Remove granola from the oven and stir frequently as it cools, scraping the bottom of the pan to prevent sticking. Once completely cool, mix in pistachios, dried cranberries and white chocolate chips.

Store in an airtight container.

In your marriage this Christmas!

by Gary Chapman, Ph.D. Christmas should be one of the happiest times of the year. Many times, however, we find ourselves grumbling and arguing during this season more than any other.

So what should you do when your seasonal cheer decays into conflict and your Christmas tidings turn to marital tension?

1.

Adopt an attitude of gratitude

Many people focus on the negative aspects of life for so long that they have difficulty seeing anything worth celebrating. Developing an attitude of gratitude is one of the most important things you can do to enhance the emotional climate of your marriage.

So how do we develop this attitude? Think back over a day and ask yourself a few questions: “What have I complained about and to whom did I complain? What is it like living with me?”

If you are really serious, ask your spouse, your children, and at least one work associate this question: “What have you recently heard me complain about?”

as they share them with you. Often our selfperception is very different from how others see us. If we are going to move from grumbling to gratitude, we have to be honest about our attitude.

Appreciate the little things

Verbalize gratitude for the little things in your life. Look around you and verbally thank God for the things you see. It’s a simple thing, but it brings to the front of your mind the many physical things for which you can be grateful.

Each week during the month of December, express gratitude to your spouse and family for something you appreciate about them. If gratitude is going to become a way of life, we must look for the positive things in all of our relationships.

Move beyond “Bah, Humbug!”

Christmas cheer only lasts a few weeks, but the joy that comes from knowing Christ should last year-round. The next time you hear yourself grumbling about something, apologize to those around you. Apologizing for our failures is one of the fastest ways to get rid of a negative attitude.

White Chocolate Martini

Ingredients • 1/2 ounce of Smirnoff Vanilla Vodka • 1 ounce of White Chocolate Liqueur • 2 ounce heavy cream • white chocolate shavings for garnish • ice

Directions Add Smirnoff’s Vanilla Vodka, ice, white chocolate liqueur and cream to a cocktail shaker.

Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Add white chocolate shavings for garnish.

Slow-Cooker Mulled Wine

Ingredients • 1 bottle red wine • 1 c. apple cider • 1 c. cranberry juice • 1/3 c. sugar • 1 c. fresh cranberries • 2 oranges, peels and juice • 2 whole cinnamon sticks • 1 tbsp. whole cloves • 1 tbsp. star anise

Directions 1. Combine wine, cider, cranberry juice, sugar, cranberries, the peel from 1 orange, the juice of 1 orange, cranberries, cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise in a slow cooker. Stir to combine.

Cook on high until warm, about 30 minutes.

2. Serve warm and garnish each glass with a piece of orange peel.

Candy Cane Vodka

Eddy’s Eggnog

Ingredients • 3 eggs, lightly beaten • 1/3 c. sugar • 1/8 tsp. salt • 2 2/3 c. milk • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • 1 c. Cool Whip or whipped cream • 1/2 c. spiced rum • 1/3 c. bourbon • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

Directions 1. In a large saucepan, combine eggs, sugar, salt and milk over medium heat, stirring continuously for 10-12 minutes, or until the mixture can coat the back of a spoon.

2. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

3. Fill a larger bowl halfway with ice water.

Lower the bottom of the saucepan into the ice water dish to cool the egg mixture for about 5 minutes.

4. Place egg mixture in the refrigerator to chill, about 20 minutes.

5. Once chilled, add whipped cream, rum and bourbon to egg mixture, stirring to combine.

6. Pour into cups and sprinkle with nutmeg. Serve.

HOT BUTTERED RUM

Ingredients buttered rum batter 1 c. butter, softened 3/4 c. packed brown sugar 2 c. vanilla ice cream, softened 2 tsp. cinnamon rum drink 2 c. apple cider 1 c. rum

Directions 1. Make the buttered rum batter: In a mixing bowl, beat butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in ice cream and cinnamon, then spoon into a large Mason jar or Tupperware container. Store in freezer until mostly hardened, about 2 hours (or store there until you’re ready to serve drinks).

Ingredients • lime, halved • 2 tbsp. sugar • 1 c. sweetened cranberry juice • 1 bottle champagne • 12 fresh cranberries • 4 small sprigs fresh rosemary

Directions Rub rims of champagne flutes with lime and dip in sugar. Pour 1/4 cup cranberry juice into each glass and top with champagne. Use a toothpick to poke a hole through cranberries. Thread rosemary skewer through cranberries and garnish mimosas.

Cranberry Sauce Margarita

Ingredients • brown sugar • 1 c. ice • 2 oz. tequila • 1 lime • 1 1/2 tbsp. chunky cranberry sauce • 1 tsp. honey • cranberries, fresh or frozen

Directions 1. Rim a margarita glass with brown sugar.

2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, tequila, the juice of 1 lime, chunky cranberry sauce, and honey.

3. Shake, then strain mixture into glass.

4. Garnish with fresh or frozen cranberries.
