Over spring break, I had the opportunity to take my son, Keegan, to Mexico for a week to relax and recharge for the impending season of incredible changes in our lives. We had an amazing time on our journey. We were able to spend time dreaming about the future, and we also signed up for some awesome adventures—which I know will be unforgettable memories in the future!

On one outing, Keegan and I mustered up the courage to bungee jump off of a stationary platform over an open canyon. I will admit, bungee jumping has been on my bucket list since I was 20, but it was also an item I had decided I was now too old to attempt. As parents you can guess how the outing went. My son was full of confidence…up until it was his turn to jump. So, I did what a typical parent does, told him it was no big deal and then volunteered to jump first. I wasn’t thinking straight at that moment in time. I got my harness connected, and the instructor counted down to one. I jumped out and didn’t fully realize what I had just committed to until I was hanging upside down with the most peaceful feeling about me.

That jump made me realize that sometimes we just have to let go and jump. And once we do, peace is waiting for us on the other side. This month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is

about forgiveness, because true peace is elusive until we fully let go of the injustices that others have done to us, as well as those we’ve done to others.

Forgiveness isn’t something we do for others. It’s a gift we give ourselves so we can be free. With Easter just around the corner, I hope the articles in this month’s issue will inspire you with practical tools to let go of some of those things that may be holding you back.

I can’t believe you did that. You idiot. You can’t be trusted. You’re terrible. And I’ll never forgive you.

These words can be devastating to someone who is asking for forgiveness. But when these are the words you say quietly to yourself, they can be crippling.

Some of the harshest words you may ever hear are the words you say in your heart: “I’ll never forgive myself.”

Don’t let your mistakes define you

Forgiving yourself can be hard work, but it’s worth it.

Here are some tips to consider when you can’t forgive yourself:

Decide to let it go

In the process of forgiving, the first barrier you have to remove is within your own mind. You must make the decision: I will not dwell on this incident. That decision doesn’t guarantee you’ll stop the mental video, but it draws a line in the sand that you have that goal. It’s a starting point.

Look at what you’ve done…objectively

A big obstacle to forgiving yourself is the inability to see things objectively. Perhaps, what you did was a big deal. Or maybe, it just feels like it was. Pretend it was someone else that you love who did what you did. Ask yourself how you would view them.

Own it, but don’t be owned by It

Taking responsibility for what you did is important. But one bad choice doesn’t have to define you. You can’t control how others define you, but you can control how you define yourself.

Grieve your loss

If a tragedy was averted in your situation, focus on the good of that, and be thankful. If, however, a tragic loss occurred, know it’s okay to grieve the pain. Beating yourself up constantly is not a requirement of grief.

Seek forgiveness from others

Forgiveness from others can free you up to forgive yourself. If you haven’t yet, seek forgiveness from the person you hurt.

Focus on what you can learn

Everyone fails. Everyone hurts others eventually. It’s part of the human experience and condition. But not everyone will learn from what they do. Be someone who is willing to learn from your past to benefit your future.

Record your reflections

Sometimes capturing a record of your thoughts and feelings can help you face them honestly. Do some light journaling for a few days. Focus on what you are struggling to let go of and what you would do if you could be free of the burden of guilt you feel.

KIDS

We all want our children to experience success. But what does that truly mean?

We need to define what is meant by “success”, otherwise we may push our teens to fit a narrow definition that can get in the way of thriving in the long term. We must be mindful to not focus on two common measures of success—the smile on their faces and the grades they produce in school.

It’s not that happiness or grades aren’t important. However, we need to look beyond the young person who stands before us, and envision the adult we are building.

When we focus on the future, our understanding of a successful adolescence broadens.

What makes an adult successful? They contribute to the world in many different ways.

They have learned to follow the path in which they can best contribute.

WHAT IS SUCCESS Defining success for teens

Our challenge as parents is to guide young people to discover their own strengths. Successful adults: • deserve happiness • work hard • nurture relationships • are creative • never stop learning • are resilient Below are some way you can help your teen become a successful adult:

Have high expectations Don’t let your teens feel like they are letting you down as they grow.

Rolling your eyes or having low expectations can make them worry about growing up.

Show them how to overcome their weaknesses: We are all uneven. Everyone excels at some things but not others. Show teens ways they can put in hard work and effort to help make up for shortcomings in some areas.

Try new things Encourage teens to try out a variety of activities to help them figure out what they’re good at, what they may have to work hard at, and where they may want to focus energies.

Learn to see your teen for who he is completely. Your teen deserves parents who care about his shortterm achievements—but overfocusing on these short-term goals can undermine some of the qualities needed to become a healthy adult.

Thinking about the adults you are raising takes pressure off of you.

Your teens’ success is not about whether they are happy in any given moment, nor is it about what they do immediately after high school. Young people have a lifetime to achieve success. Your job is not to get them to the finish line, but to prepare them with the character strengths that will launch them into the future.

STRONGER TOGETHER 5 steps to forgiving your spouse

Forgiveness not only heals our hearts; it heals relationships.

Often, we think of forgiveness as something we need for big things— but it’s those little things that can lead to resentfulness and bitterness, especially toward our spouses.

Forgiveness in marriage is critical if you want to have a healthy relationship. So, when your husband forgets to do something you asked him to, or when he says something in a tone you don’t like, deal with it right then. Tell him how you feel, and then make up your mind to wipe that slate clean and forgive him. If you need help getting started, here are 5 steps toward forgiveness in marriage.

1 Forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling.

You may not feel like forgiving.

You may want to harbor the anger and hurt and make your spouse pay for what he has done. But, once you decide you want to grant forgiveness, you can begin to work through those feelings.

2 Share your hurt.

After your spouse has apologized and asked for forgiveness, you need to talk about the matter before you move on. It might be uncomfortable, but you need to share how you feel. Don’t point a finger; just share how you feel so she’ll understand the depth of your hurt. Make sure you feel heard before you move on.

3 Plan for change.

The goal here is not to punish your spouse with requirements, but to set up guidelines that you both agree to. That way, there will be fewer gray areas that can lead to disappointment later in your relationship.

4 Stop the video.

Do not replay your spouse’s infraction over and over again in your mind. When your mind starts to wander and you begin to dwell on the incident and the hurt it caused you, tell yourself to stop.

It’s one thing to need to talk to someone like a counselor about your pain so you can move past it, but it’s another when you keep inflicting the pain on yourself by dwelling on the hurt. Deciding to truly forgive your spouse is recommitting to your relationship.

Don’t sabotage that re-commitment by focusing on the negative.

5 Give yourself time.

Just deciding to forgive will not strip away all of the pain. It’s natural to feel raw and disappointed.

Remember, forgiveness is a process. It’s important to keep choosing to forgive.

When you commit to resolving the small issues in your marriage, you’re actually creating a solid foundation of trust for when your relationship may face larger disappointments in life. Don’t forget the work you do today will make your relationship stronger tomorrow.

Create beautiful table decorations for Easter

Looking for a craft you can do with your teens this Easter?

Easter egg candles can be made in all different colors, and you can use items you already have at home.

Supplies:

• Prepared egg shells • Craft paint in pastel colors • Paint brushes • Colored wax (use old candles or scented wax melts) • Empty metal food can, rinsed and label removed • Egg carton • Candle wicks

To prepare your egg shells for this craft, crack the egg across the top instead of across the middle. Once you’ve emptied the contents of the egg, rinse out the shell and put it aside to dry.

Step 1: Paint the eggs

Use the craft paint to paint the eggs.

Use coordinating pastel colors for a nice display.

Step 2: Melt the wax Before melting the wax, be sure to bend the food can so it has a spout.

This step is critical for minimizing mess when making these candles.

Place the wax you’d like to melt in the can. Stand up the can with the wax in a small pot. Add water to the pot no higher than the level of the wax and bring the water to a simmer. Allow the can to remain in the pot until all the wax is melted.

Step 3: Pour the candles While you are waiting for the wax to melt, prep the eggs.

Stand the eggs up in an egg carton and place one wick in each egg.

Once the wax is melted, use a pot mitt to remove the can from the pot being very careful not to burn yourself! Carefully pour the wax out of the can via the spout into your prepared egg shells.

Five things that will help you sleep

Right before you go to bed, try taking a hot bath or long shower—the rise and resulting sudden drop in your body temperature will help to make you feel more relaxed—and sleepy.

Wear warm socks to bed. When you sleep, your body redirects blood flow to your hands and feet to redistribute heat from your core to your extremities; cold feet can inhibit this blood flow and therefore make it harder for you to maintain a restful sleep. Socks are the fix.

If the temperature in your bedroom allows it, try sleeping under a heavy or weighted blanket.

Long used by psychiatrists in occupational therapy as a tool for calming patients with sensory overstimulation, the all-over “deep touch pressure” of weighted blankets helps promote deeper relaxation.

Still having trouble sleeping? Here’s a breathing trick you can try. Touch your tongue to a spot directly behind your top front teeth, then breathe in through your nose for four seconds. Then hold your breath for seven seconds and exhale through your mouth for eight seconds. Repeat the whole process three times to fully decompress…if you don’t fall asleep before you reach the end.

If none of these techniques are helping you sleep (and you’ve tried cutting out before-bed caffeine and sugars), then you need to do a little more to set your mind at ease. Introductory mindfulness techniques, such as focusing in on your breathing or studying an imagined object (with your eyes closed) for five minutes, can allow you to finally slip away from the stresses of daily life and find a more restful sleep.

Earth Day is celebrated April 22, 2019 to demonstrate and promote environmental awareness and encourages the protection of our planet. Earth Day is recognized in more than 193 countries. In honor of our planet, I thought it was fitting to remind us all of the 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and how being mindful of these in our homes is easy to achieve.

Reduce

Stop the clutter, slow down the buying. Do you need it in your home or do you just want it?

Ask yourself these questions: Is there something else that can be used for this purpose? Is this something that needs to be done?

Here are a few things you can do immediately to reduce your consumer footprint.

• Print on both sides of the paper • Pay bills electronically • Remove your name from mailing lists • Read newspapers online • Avoid using disposable items like paper plates, cups and utensils • Avoid buying overpackaged items

Reuse

When remodeling or updating your home really consider: What can I reuse again? Can you refurbish cabinets instead of getting new ones? Can new paint upgrade a finish or if something new is merited can the old be given away for another use to someone else? Learning to reuse or repurpose for a different use than what is intended is essential for cutting down waste. Not remodeling? Try these basic ideas: • Send gently used books to schools • Donate your older fashion looks to charities • Paint old furniture and repurpose it • Use old spaghetti sauce jars to serve as pots for plants or storage for pens or other items • Use rechargeable batteries

Recycle

If it cannot be reused, then recycle all materials possible.

Glass, wood, cardboard packaging can be recycled, not just thrown away. Recycling items means the item will be repurposed into raw material that can then be reshaped into a new item. When purchasing new items choose recycled products.

PRICELESS Give yourself the gift of forgiveness Although forgiveness brings many benefits, particularly to the “forgiver,” to forgive is not always easy. In fact, many people who would like to let go of anger and forgive are stumped with the question of how to forgive.

While everyone may have a unique perspective on how to forgive, the following strategies have been proven effective for many people.

Express yourself

When trying to decide how to forgive someone, it may or may not help to express your feelings to the other person. If the relationship is important to you and you would like to maintain it, it may be very useful for you to tell

the other person—in nonthreatening language— how their actions affected you. If the person is no longer in your life, or if you have reason to believe that things will get much worse if you address the situation directly, you may want to just write a letter and tear it up (or burn it) and move on. People don’t need to know that you’ve forgiven them; forgiveness is more for you than for the other person.

Look for the positive

Journaling about a situation where you were hurt or wronged can help you process what happened and move on; however, the way you write about it

and what you choose to focus on can make all the difference in how easy it becomes to forgive.

Research shows that journaling about the benefits you’ve received from a negative situation can actually help you to forgive and move on more easily. So pick up a pen and start journaling about the silver lining next time you find someone raining on your parade.

Cultivate empathy

While you don’t have to agree with what the other person did to you, when working on how to forgive, it often helps to put yourself in the other person’s shoes.

Research has shown that empathy, particularly

with men, is associated with forgiveness, and can make the process easier. Instead of seeing the person as “the enemy,” try to understand the factors that they were dealing with.

Get help

Sometimes it can be difficult to forget about the past and forgive, particularly if the offending acts were traumatic. If you’re still having difficulty knowing how to forgive someone who’s wronged you in a significant way, you may have better success working with a therapist who can help you work through your feelings on a deeper level and personally support you through the process.
