PAWS CORNER Q: I am planning to travel cross-country with my two dogs. Which states require they be restrained, and what are the penalties if they’re not? A: No state in the U.S. has yet passed a law specifically requiring pets to wear restraints or be in a carrier when riding in a car. Most legislation in place considers unrestrained pets a form of distracted driving. So at the moment, it’s unlikely you’ll be stopped simply for having an unrestrained pet in the car. If the pet is distracting you or obstructing your view of the road, however, that’s not safe no matter how legal (or illegal) it may be. Restraining pets in the car just makes sense. This cocktail combines the flavors of a classic mojito with a tangy zing of fresh cranberries

Ingredients • 2 parts Cruzan® Aged Light Rum • 2 parts Cranberry Simple Syrup • 10 Fresh Mint Leaves • 1/4 part Lime Juice • Soda Water • Cranberries • Lime Wheel Instructions Prepare the Cranberry Simple Syrup by mixing 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar and 8 oz. of fresh cranberries in a saucepan. Bring to a light simmer until sugar is dissolved and cranberries start to burst. Remove from heat and strain out cranberries. For the cocktail, combine mint leaves and lime juice in the bottom of a tall glass. Lightly muddle. Fill glass with ice and add cranberry simple syrup and light rum. Top with soda water and lightly stir. Garish with cranberries and limes.

Researchers have discovered that healthy brains need certain levels of reserves, and challenging them is one way to build those reserves. Feed your brain The brain needs food and nutrients, and the right food can go a long way to support brain health. An antioxidant-rich diet including things like unsweetened tea, berries and turmeric can protect the brain from damage that comes from aging and oxidative stress. Cultivate relationships As life and circumstances bring inevitable changes, the number of people we count as friends and loved ones can change over the years. It takes effort, but Dow says it’s important to try to maintain our relationships and be open to creating new ones, because they can have a profound effect on brain health. Sleep We often short ourselves on sleep when life gets busy, but it’s important to make it a priority. “Think of nighttime sleep as a wash-and-rinse cycle that clears away the ‘bad stuff’ that builds up during the day,” Dow says.
