This year, we celebrate 24 extraordinary years of the High School Project. Time has done nothing but enhance this incredible offering. It remains much-loved – inspired by the energy of the students who come together, year-after-year, from all over our beautiful city.

As we launch this new season of plays, LIVE! And In Person, I can think of no better kick off: the bright faces of tomorrow taking centre stage, here at their home theatre: the Welcome.Grand.

WELCOME

Into the Woods is one of my all-time favourite musicals. It takes something that we all know (fairy tales) and cleverly plays with our

All of us at the Grand welcome the chance to mentor these students. Their positivity is contagious! For me, it reminds me of when I was in high school at Catholic Central (over 35 years ago), where we would sometimes per form concerts on this glorious stage. Entering the hallowed stage door and proceeding to the stage was always a thrilling moment. The building was alive. I truly hope (and suspect) that today’s students feel the same as I did those many years ago.

expectations and understandings. Just when you think you know where the story is going, and who these story book characters are, you are taken on a whole different journey. By sending all of these beloved characters into the woods at the same time, a delightful array of surprises result. And what’s more, I love that the students are getting to experience the genius of the late Stephen Sondheim.

We are thrilled to welcome you back to the Grand Theatre, where we operate on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.

We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we operate.

In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES

Once I dove into this show, my appreci ation grew for Mr. Sondheim. His pass ing led me even further into his entire body of work, and my understanding of his approaches were highly respected. His musical nuances and thoughtful placement of notations in this score are masterful. The idea of reimagining these fairy tales still transcends 35 years later. Further, the ability for Into The Woods to cater to many different interpretations truly speaks to the versatility of this musical.

When I was approached to direct this show, I had a bit of pause. As some one who does not always appreciate Sondheim's work, the feeling of tackling one of his best-known musicals felt a little strange. However, one of the things I am passionate about is teaching and leading young people in the arts, so my response to directing the High School Project's Into the Woods was a no-brainer.

"What I appreciate most about this show is not just the lesson of community, or the wonder of magic and spells. It's the strength these characters all possess; to be better for themselves and for each other. That is the beauty that surpasses far beyond the woods."

The High School Project is a unique pro gram and tradition that has given students a place to grow as young artists and make lasting friendships. My wish for these talented actors is to be daring, bold, and to discover their powers as storytellers. As we all return to live performance, I am honoured and thrilled to be a part of this legacy, leading these students back to the Enjoystage. the Woods!

STUDENT PERSPECTIVES WHAT DOES THE SONG " NO ONE ALONE"IS MEAN TO YOU?

PHOTOS BY DEXTER GREENE

Jordan Porter

Oliver Stanton

The Song “No One is Alone” means to me is that you are never truly alone in life as someone will always be there for you in the happiest to darkest times even if it's through a memory or beside you.

Kira Shuit

During the pandemic, many people dealt with depression, anxiety, fear of the unknown and high stress levels… Sondheim reminds us in “No One is Alone” that someone is always on your side, whether a giant’s trying to kill you or you’re dealing with anxiety and depression. Although you may feel lonely, isolated and lost, you’re never truly alone.

There are so many times when we feel alone. But this song shows us that even when we feel like that, there is some one looking out for us. It’s a light in the darkness, hope when things are hard, a reminder that no one is alone.

Jasmine Darvasi

Alyssa Palma

Even in your darkest times, when life-changing events are occurring, there’s always a reason as to why. Although we may not know the reason, we have to put trust in ourselves and others – our best sources of support.

Allison Paris

To me, it's always been about how all the people you've known and help guide you through the ups and downs of life. Even when they've left, they're still influenc ing your decisions, good and bad.

Emily Alton

Kieran Prouty

To me, “No One is Alone” means we, as a community of people, have shared experiences. Though you may feel alone in the world, you can always find some one who has had a shared experience or a shared feeling. No one is alone.

Alex Pearce

The meaning of “No One is Alone” to me is that no matter what you are going through there will always be someone who can and will help you through it.

After a few years of isolation, “No One is Alone” strikes closer to home more than ever. For me, this song means that no matter what hardships or trials you’re going through, there will always be someone on your side - that you will never truly be alone.

Karissa Kern

Lauren Gracey

“No One is Alone” is a dual purpose to demonstrate that everyone has some one on their side, even when it feels like there isn’t. No matter how dark the situation may seem, you are not alone. Nobody is.

After we went through a period of such intense isolation, it’s important to take time and remember that we all are get ting through it together. Building each other up without judgement and finding true comfort in shared hardships is what that song means to me.

“No One is Alone” reflects life in any world and society, from good sides and bad sides, showing that in different lights nobody is wrong. Nobody is alone with how they think, how they feel and perceive things, through hardships and opinions, there will always be people by your side.

Framing is an Art. Our years of design experience equip us to create beautiful results for our clients C U S T O M F R A M I N G U N I Q U E G I F T S 519 438 2534 371 Horton Street (West of Colborne) sarah@framingandart ca

The iconic musical’s opening lyric - “I wish ” - is set to the interval of a rising major second and serves as one example of the many musi cal motifs of character, location, or conflict that are repeated and developed throughout the show. The dialogue is heavily syncopated and, in many instances, the characters' lines are delivered with a fixed beat that follows natural speech rhythms.

The late Stephen Sondheim has been widely acknowledged as the most innovative, influential, and important composer and lyricist in modern Broadway history. His work tackles unexpected themes and some of the darker elements of the human experience through music and lyrics of unprecedented complexity and sophistication. Sondheim was interested in communication with audi ences, stating “I love the theater as much as music, and the whole idea of getting across to an audience and making them laugh, making them cry – just making them feel – is para mount to me."

There are Giants in the Sky: Understanding the Musical Giant, Stephen Sondheim

Born in New York on March 22, 1930, Stephen Sondheim began studying piano and organ at a young age and was already practicing songwriting as a student. When he was ten years old and grappling with his parents' divorce, young Stephen watched his first Broadway musical, Very Warm for May. "The curtain went up and revealed a piano," Sondheim recalled. "A butler took a duster and brushed it up, tinkling the keys. I thought that was thrilling." He then formed a close relationship with lyricist and play wright, Oscar Hammerstein II, who became Sondheim's surrogate father, influencing him profoundly and developing his love of musi cal theater. The introduction of this art form as a way to express himself gave Sondheim a way through the complicated emotions of a changing family life, and gave the world a talent who would go on to write the lyrics for West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959) before eventually devoting himself to writing both music and lyrics for shows, such as Company (1970), Sweeney Todd (1979), and Into the Woods (1987).

Sondheim collaborated with James Lapine on Into the Woods, a musical based on several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, which debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986 and premiered on Broadway on November 5, 1987. This production was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won three (Best Score: Stephen Sondheim, Best Book: James Lapine, Best Actress in a Musical: Canada’s own Joanna Gleason); won the 1988 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical; and the origi nal cast recording won a Grammy Award!

He was one of theatre’s most influential composers and lyricists, but who was the man behind Into the Woods?

The student cast and musicians, along with our creative team, enjoyed the opportunity and challenge of exploring the themes in this show – as well as learning its intricate music and lyrics. Our backstage team have poured over the set, wardrobe, and props, which help tell a story of growing up, accepting respon sibility, and the consequences of getting what you wish for. The collaborative nature of theatre was something Sondheim embraced wholeheartedly and is proudly on display in this production, featuring the work of 44 high school students.

GRAND THEATRE GRANDTHEATRE.COMBOXOFFICE:519.672.8800

This spooky, vaudville-in spired piece won’t stop haunting me and we can hardly wait to share it with you. Filled with mu sic, dance, and spectacle, or ghosts will haunt you with their rendition of a time in our theatre’s history that remains a mystery. And, who knows?

Perhaps our ghost, Am brose, might just drop in while you’re here...
