GRAND GHOSTS

We are proud to support the Grand Theatre and the artists who have been captivating audiences with exciting, innovative, and entertaining productions.
BMO is proud to sponsor the Grand Theatre’s 2022/23 season.
Ambrose Small is our resident ghost here at the Grand Theatre. Reports say that he has been with us, and quite literally among us, since his disappearance in 1919. So, after over 100 years, I thought it was time to create a production that examines the life (and death!) of this notorious man.
Grand Ghosts is a production six years in the making, and our brilliant playwright Trina Davies has become quite an expert about Mr. Small. This most unusual tale that you are about to experience is based on her extensive research. With Davies’ usual theatrical flare, a unique made-in-London production has arrived.
Jillian Keiley, one of Canada’s most cele brated directors, joins us to lead a troupe of brilliant artists on our Grand stage: a vaude ville-inspired ghostly spectacle. Keiley has enthusiastically embraced the theme of this show and has directed something that will
not only entertain you, but that will stick with you, delight you, and yes, even haunt you.
The details of the life of Ambrose Small are sometimes “stranger than fiction.” Throughout the world, the Grand is mysteri ously renowned for our resident ghost. And, during rehearsals for this very production, a staff member noticed a man with a moustache appear and then disappear in the corner of the room…Clearly Mr. Small’s curiosity was piqued.
As the playwright aptly says, “Ambrose Small was a heck of a guy.” And, you are about to discover why. Maybe, just maybe, he will be watching along with us today. It won’t be the first time – or the last.
We are thrilled to welcome you back to the Grand Theatre, where we operate on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we operate.
It’s been just over a month since I stepped into the role of Executive Director here at the Grand. And what a joyous month it has been – a month of discovery and experiencing all that this great company and city have to offer. The opening of Grand Ghosts is also especially poignant for me, as it represents the first Spriet Stage series production of my inaugu ral season, and a project that is uniquely “the Grand” in so many ways.
I’ve been so inspired, joining this storied and remarkable organization. The Grand is at the very heart of London – and at the heart of the Grand, are you, the audiences who enjoy and support our work. Thank you for your continued support, and your recognition of the central role the Grand plays in our com munity, shaping our city, and advancing the creative conversation.
The past weeks have been a time of learning, of exploring with curiosity, of digging into the essential questions, of figuring out how we work, and setting priorities moving forward. I see in the Grand, an organization working
diligently, from a place of strength, working to better itself, our community, and our society at large. The work and team are strong – it’s an exciting place and time to be here.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge with gratitude my predecessor, Deb Harvey. Deb has capably led this organization over the past 22 years and has left an indelible mark on this company. It is my honour to inherit the stewardship of this theatre company from her and to continue to work with our creative leader, Dennis Garnhum, as well as our board, staff, and volunteers.
On a personal note, London already feels like home - thanks so much for the warm welcome. After a theatre career spanning the past 20 years, across much of Canada, I’m thrilled to call the Forest City my new home. I look forward to exploring more of this community and region with my partner and our husky, Tika, as well as meeting more Londoners, in the years to come.
In the meantime, I’ll see you at the theatre. Live! And In Person.

Did you come here to see the famous ghost of the Grand, Ambrose Small?
We did too.
Our team figured that if we wanted to conjure a ghost, we needed to perform a séance. And the séance most effective in speaking to other-worldly spirits? Delivering something they loved.
One thing that Ambrose loved was Vaudeville. He loved London and he loved the Grand. This play is a love let ter to all of these elements, with echoes from the stages of the Grand’s past, and a vaudevillian- studded cast composed of some of the most multi-talented,
liveliest, and funniest players in the country.
All theatres are filled with ghosts. Our Grand Ghosts, a little silly and a little scary, are here to do what Ambrose loved to do most: entertain audiences.
We are glad to have conjured you here tonight, and that you can join with all the spirits of the Spriet for this Grand show.

Ambrose Joseph Small was a Canadian theatre magnate who owned several Ontario based theatres including the Grand Theatre in London. The last known sighting of Small occurred the evening of December 2, 1919. At age 53, Small owned theatres in seven Ontario cities and was the controller of 62 other buildings, a self made millionaire at the height of his career.
Ambrose Small is born on January 11, 1866, in Newmarket, Ontario, to Daniel Small, an innkeeper, and Helen (Ellen) Brazell, each twenty years old.
Small’s family moves to Toronto, where Daniel becomes the manager of the Grand Hotel. Next door to the hotel is the Grand Opera House, a prestigious establishment that presents the best shows coming out of New York
Young Small begins working at the opera house as an usher and bartender. He's also involved in an illegal bookmaking operation taking bets on horse races
After a quarrel with Grand Opera House manager Oliver B. Sheppard, Small goes to work for the Toronto Opera House, a venue for vaudeville and popular melodrama on the touring circuits controlled from New York and Montreal. While Small learns the intricacies of the business and is promoted to manager, his mother dies His father marries Josephine Kormann, daughter of wealthy beer baron Ignatius Kormann.
In London, The Grand Opera House is the focus of theatrical activity in the second half of the 19th century Although it's destroyed by fire in 1900, it's now replaced by the Grand Theatre, at the present site.
Ambrose goes into partnership with Detroit theatre mogul Clark J. Whitney, who controls a major circuit in Ontario. When Whitney dies, Small buys theatres in Peterborough, Hamilton, St. Thomas, Kingston and other communities across Ontario
Ambrose marries Theresa Kormann, his stepmother’s younger sister, in 1902 in York (Toronto). The Smalls live in an opulent mansion in Toronto’s affluent Rosedale district They never have children
Theresa uses some of her family money to help Ambrose purchase theatres he's leasing, including the London Grand Opera House. London is one of Ambrose’s favourite cities and he gives the theatre his special attention.
Live theatre is in decline due to the growing popularity of motion pictures, the impact of WWI and the Spanish Flu. Small decides to get out of the business and strikes a deal to sell his chain of theatres to Trans Canada Theatres Limited of Montreal for $1 75 million On December 1, 1919, Small sells all of his theatre holdings The following day, he meets with lawyer F W M Flock in Small's office at the Grand Opera House. Flock leaves at 5:30 p.m. and is the last person to see Small.
In January 1920, Small's attorney and Theresa Small, now alarmed by Small's lengthy absence, notify the local police Theresa offers a $50,000 reward for information about her husband's disappearance and whereabouts if found alive, and $15,000 if dead. The reward went unclaimed.

The supernatural is a revived subject of interest among artists and academics, as well as within popular culture. Such attention has many precedents. One of these—Spiritualism, a movement that sought communication with the “other side”— emerged in the United States in the 1840s and spread throughout North America and beyond. More recent upsurges in occult belief also occurred after the Second World War, during the 1960s, and in the New Age systems of the 1980s and 1990s.
Globally, recent scholarship has reconsid ered the metaphysical underpinnings of mod ern art or celebrated the supernatural in our contemporary moment. Major exhibitions include Surrealism and Magic: Enchanted Modernity (Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice), Supernatural America: The Paranormal in American Art (Minneapolis Institute of Art); Not Without My Ghosts: The Artist as Medium (Hayward Gallery, London), and As Above, So Below: Portals, Visions, Spirits & Mystics (Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin). For its 2022 iteration, the globally influential exhibition at the Venice Biennale was entitled The Milk of Dreams, after a book by Surrealist painter Leonora Carrington, and it took on its oth erworldly mindset. In the United Kingdom, artist Tai Shani won the 2019 Turner Prize for her work that blends the paranormal with science fiction and feminism.
Many historical Canadian artists have embraced and explored the spiritual and supernatural through their work. 19th cen tury artist Homer Watson was a committed Spiritualist, believing that a painting could convey the mystical relationship between humanity, nature, and the spirit world. In the early 20th century, prominent painters
such as Lawren Harris embraced Theosophy, which claimed it possible for humans to discern the laws of the universe and inhabit different planes of existence.
Southern Ontario is culturally distinguished by a longstanding supernatural undercur rent. It prioritizes the extraordinary and gothic, as exemplified in the work of authors Margaret Atwood, Robertson Davies, Alice Munro, and Jane Urquhart. In London, playwright James Reaney Sr., is probably the best-known author to focus on the folkloric and supernatural, his subjects including the Black Donnellys and the Baldoon Mystery. In 1963, he collaborated with acclaimed London painter and filmmaker Jack Chambers to publish a book of poems, The Dance of Death at London, Ontario, which featured narra tion by the Grim Reaper.
Inspired by the unknown, uncanny, and unearthly, the Museum London exhibition Spectral complements the launch of Grand Ghosts, featuring ghostly phenomena from myth and popular culture in mysterious nar ratives and spooky, immersive environments. Selections from the Museum’s large histori cal artifacts collection demonstrate the ways in which Londoners have conceptualized the afterlife. Artworks include loans and com missions from regional and nationally based artists—Christina Battle, Corinne Botz, the Broadbent Sisters, Mere Phantoms, Dana Holst, Ed Pien, and Marigold Santos—who create fantasy worlds, or thrust nightmare into the everyday.
