WELCOME

From the shores of Nova Scotia, and the historic Neptune Theatre in beautiful Halifax, comes East Coast Kitchen Party. I can think of no better production to end our first full season back – LIVE! And In Person – than this production, filled with glorious and uplifting music from the Maritimes. It’s a true celebration of a proud East Coast tradition and the joy in coming together – as friends and as a community.

We had intended to present this production two years ago, as a way to welcome audiences back to our stunning, newly-renovated space. Unfortunately, COVID-19 had other plans and our “party” was put on hold. But like any great events and shows, it must eventually go on. And somehow, it feels more appropriate to present this show now, as a way to end and bid farewell to a season of coming back together. In fact, all the more reason to raise a glass, sing along, and rejoice.

In 2021, London was designated as a UNESCO City of Music – the first in Canada. To celebrate this distinction and our incredible, home-grown talent, we have invited a different guest artist to join our friends from the Maritimes onstage for every show. Offering the best music that the East Coast and London have to offer, you may just need to join us “in the kitchen” more than once to take in our city’s exceptional artists.

As one incredible season comes to an end, we now look forward to our next delectable season: the recently-announced Season of Pure Imagination. Featuring blockbuster shows, like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Kim’s Convenience, and Clue, this is a season you won’t want to miss – and the perfect way to continue the party!

Cue the music.

Welcome.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We are thrilled to welcome you back to the Grand Theatre, where we operate on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.

In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.

Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.

We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we operate.

MUSICAL DIRECTOR'S NOTES

A traditional east coast kitchen party is a cultural event that folks across the country (and the world) have come to see as synonymous with east coast life. And they’re not wrong! Growing up in Nova Scotia, the kitchen parties I went to (and later took part in) were, to me, just what one did on the weekend. The action always moved to the kitchen, and before you could say “Lukey’s Boat” there were scuff marks on the linoleum, mandolines in the sugar bowl, more than one fiddler in the doorway and a guitar being passed around mid-song to whomever wanted to take a verse.

A kitchen party on the east coast was (and continues to be) a way in which folks can pass down the tradition of Celtic songwriting and playing, sharing stories in music about the unique and often difficult lifestyle on the coast, and staying occupied during the long winter months. Music starts in the womb for most Maritime folks and even for those who never take to an instrument themselves, the importance it holds in their lives is understood from an early age.

When Jeremy Webb (Neptune Theatre’s Artistic Director)

approached me to put a show together that captured the feeling of a true kitchen party I thought, “no problem”. But as we dove into the cannon of east coast songs and songwriters it became apparent that choosing what we would

highlight was going to be a difficult task. There is so much incredible music, so many amazing songwriters and artists that whittling it down to couple of sets was at times heartbreaking (kitchen parties can go on for days and never repeat a song!). But what we landed on I think will give you an honest feeling of what a party in the kitchen can be like, even from your comfy theatre seats!

But of course, this show just wouldn’t have the impact it does without our incredible cast. If choosing the music was challenging, casting Malia, Karen and Celia in our show was by far the easiest decision. Their talents and experience growing up on the east coast has made this little concert into a full-fledged barn-burner!

The east coast gets a lot of flack sometimes. We talk funny, have a slower pace of life and a sometimes unhealthy interest in our neighbours. But we loves our music, wha?! And where else in the world can you learn everything you need to know about a person by simply asking, “who’s yer father?”.

Now prime the pot, steep the tea and enjoy the show!

CREATORS' NOTES

Ian: Making music is the best part of my day. The creation of Kitchen Party was as much an excuse to find a way for me to do more of that as it was a celebration of East Coast culture. Having the opportunity to work with these incredible songs and bring them to life in our unique little way has been a dream.

Jeremy: Ian and I had been pals for years and I remain a big fan of his music - I even had some of his CDs! So when I thought of making an East Coast kitchen party show, he was the first person I asked to get involved. It wasn't just going to be a concert. It had to be an experience, full of flavour.

Ian: Jeremy and I couldn’t have asked for a better team to help bring it all to life. From Andrew Cull’s kitchen set of curiosities, Vicky Williams’s poignant lighting design, and Sam Wilson’s considerate direction, all of the elements came together to help get people’s toes tapping. Add in the dedication the cast has shown to bringing the music to life and you have a show that embodies the community “come-togetherness” the East Coast is known for.

Jeremy: I was thrilled at the idea of putting together a party show. A show that we could bring out annually and develop into a bit of a tradition. We got started down that path and had to

pause for a few years as COVID hit. But you can't keep Maritimers out of the kitchen! During the lockdowns we got to filming it as four or five webisodes for our digital channel we called 'Sociables.'

Back at the beginning, it was so much fun thinking about how to start putting together a show that would pop up each year.

Ian: Jeremy and I started this journey one night at the Lower Deck in Halifax listening to the local legendary band, Signal Hill. A few pints into the first set it was clear - this show needs to be a party!

Jeremy: In Halifax, we even put a seemingly impromptu bar ON the stage as well as some of our audience. The idea being that the audience were guests in the kitchen. It's been very interesting to see some patrons come back time after time. We think they've moved in!

Ian: So, we invite you to sing, clap, stomp and “SOCIABLE!” your way through the next couple of hours. What happens in the kitchen stays in the kitchen… unless someone is listening in on the party line.

let the music play!

If you were told that London has a unique, one-of-a-kind, globally recognized distinction (that has nothing to do with trees or construction in the core) would you be able to pinpoint it? Each day, the London Music Office, Tourism London and a number of key partners spend time educating the community on the fact that London, Ontario is Canada’s first – and only – UNESCO City of Music.

But what does this really mean?

Announced in November 2021, the City of London received this distinct honour and joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). The UCCN strives to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. First created in 2004, the UCCN is comprised of 295 cities (59 of which are Cities of Music) that work together towards a common objective: placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperating actively at the international level to advance the UN’s 2030 Sustainability Agenda through the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

But why London?

From deep roots in the creative field of music, to a commitment to continue the growth and improvement of the music sector, London is a leading music event city with an established music strategy. London is also a hub for music education, production and engineering. Did you know that London has a dedicated Music Office? The London Music Office works to create conditions for the music sector to thrive and grow. Serving as a connection point between City Hall and the industry/community, the London Music Office also leads London’s UNESCO City of Music designation.

London’s music community is comprised of world class choirs, festivals and orchestras, incredible venues and a number of top-ranked training programs offered through various music organizations and institutes. The City of London and its partners are committed to continuing support to the broader music community while leading the planning and implementation of London’s UNESCO City of Music Designation Plan, connected with the London Music Strategy and London's Cultural Prosperity Plan. This will be led by the City’s London Music Office with core team support from Tourism London, The City of London, London Economic Development Corporation, London Chamber of Commerce and the London Arts Council.

When you think about the Grand Theatre’s mission of being “World Curious, London Proud”, we’d say there’s no better fit for both the London Music Office and Tourism London. London’s UNESCO City of Music designation creates a landing pad for the international music community, while also opening the doors for London, Ontario and the amazing locally grown musical talent to explore the world through music exchange programs.

Partnering on this year ’ s East Coast Kitchen Party and being given the opportunity for 23 local musicians to participate as guest artists was an obvious choice. Add to that the Grand Theatre’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and creativity, and the alignment is seamless with London’s UNESCO City of Music designation.

As the Grand Theatre states in its show marketing, the East Coast Kitchen Party is the perfect opportunity to grab your friends and family, raise a glass and celebrate the music that defines us – and the music that binds us. Cheers to you, London! You’ve got some pretty incredible talent that we can’t wait to show the world.

Your donation will ensure we are able to continue to deliver on our mission of creating transformative experiences on our stages, through our stories, to connect with and inspire our communities.

Donations of any and all amounts are valued by our Grand theatre family and come with a range of benefits. Thank you for your generous support.

GRAND Visionaries

$5,000–20,000+

Directors’ Circle / Ambassadors’ Circle / Patrons’ Circle

Pace-setting support at this elite level will, in turn, provide you with the most exclusive and personalized benefits, designed to bring you up close and personal with the staff and artists working at our theatre, as well as the Artistic and Executive Directors. Benefit highlights include: complimentary hosting opportunities, curated events, Opening Night subscriptions and more.

GRAND Champions

LONDON PROUD CLUB

$2,500–4,999

Donors at this level will directly assist your fellow Londoners who may not be able to afford access to the Grand through programs like Student Club, Holiday Wish for Kids and the CANOO program welcoming new Canadians to London. As a Grand Champion, you will attend specially designed events with like-minded supporters that will unlock the backstage experience of productions. Added benefits include: exclusive behind the scenes events including invitation to sneak peeks of coming seasons and a full season of posters!

GRAND Supporters

$10–2,499

Partners / Members / Friends / Associates

Your support will enable the Grand to expand and enhance programming. Benefits highlights include: recognition in our house programs, complimentary beverage tickets, a season poster collection and more!

A complete list of donor benefits is available on our website at grandtheatre.com. Any comments, questions, or suggestions can be directed to our Development Coordinator, Jacob Wiley, at jwiley@grandtheatre.com or 519.672.9030, ext. 245
