My first reading of Controlled Damage by Andrea Scott was a powerful experience.
I was astonished to discover so many detailed facts about Viola Desmond. I was disturbed to learn of the treatment she received, while at the same time, inspired by the strong and determined life that she led. More than anything, I was impressed with how Andrea achieves something vital: she bridges the past with the present. Because, after all, this is a story for today. It is an examination, a call for all of us to learn from the wrongs of the past, and to treat each other with equal respect and dignity.
Being rejected from a space is not something only Viola understands.
Andrea Scott is from London. She has been honest that London wasn’t an easy city to grow up in as a person of colour. I am saddened by her early years in this
city, and deeply impressed by her tenacity to overcome this adversity in becoming the successful writer that she is today. I wish the Grand Theatre had a better history of being more inviting. I wish that while Andrea was growing up, she felt that our Grand Theatre was her theatre – a place where she could take a seat, any seat she wanted, and feel safe and at home. The reality is, this space has not been welcoming to all people throughout its time. People in my position bear the responsibility to change this. Please know, we are working to become a more inclusive space for absolutely everyone. And Andrea’s brilliant play only inspires us to ensure that it is so.
Welcome to the Grand Theatre. Please, take a seat.
dennis garnhum artistic directorWe are thrilled to welcome you back to the Grand Theatre, where we operate on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we operate.

Ha!
I told my high-school English teacher that I wanted to be a writer, and she laughed at me. It happened over 35 years ago, in a London Ontario classroom, but I still remember her smirk clearly. I continued to write, in spite of the ridicule, and now my play, Controlled Damage, is being produced at the Grand Theatre. Ha!
It’s no wonder I was drawn to Viola Desmond’s story in October 2015. She was tiny, persistent, black, and stubborn; I would tower over her with my 5’2” frame. Born 55 years before I drew my first breath, her focus and drive arrested me. There weren’t self-help books telling her she could do it, or that all she needed was grit, in post-war Halifax; so how did Viola have the audacity to try? At least 15 year old me had Ntozake Shange, Djanet Sears, and Toni Morrison as role models; I even had Oprah!
What Viola had was extraordinary in its ubiquitous ordinariness: a strong, supportive family that encouraged leadership, regardless of what society told her. Does ordinary mean invisible? In some ways, yes. Invisible stitching is ordinary, but what it does is extraordinary. The strength in being ordinary is the ability to make mistakes and grow from them without the whole world watching.
And then one day, because you’ve been able to fall down, and screw up without criticism, you do something extraordinary.
She was an ordinary, hard-working woman living in a challenging time to be ‘other’. She was knocked down, but still managed to stand back up, do her nails, curl your hair, and hold her head high. Viola was, and still is, a role model for all of us. It’s still a challenge to be seen in a world that can grind you under its gnarly heel with nary a backwards glance, but it can be done if you absolutely stand in your truth and ignore the laughter. And when you get through that seemingly impossible job, marriage, or treatment, you will have inspired and buoyed others. It is at that point you can throw your head back and laugh. Ha!

Halifax business owner, Viola Desmond went to a movie at the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Unaware that she was sold a lower-priced ticket for the balcony, where Black patrons were expected to sit, Viola took a seat on the main floor: the whites-only section. Although she offered to pay the one cent tax difference, Viola was dragged from the theatre, jailed, and charged. Her story would impact history forever.
The historical nature of this production contains the use of words that are offensive, demeaning, and inappropriate in our current world, including the nword Its themes of racism include racial slurs and similar-related language.
Video, haze, and atmosphere effects are also used in this production
The etymology of the word is often traced to the Latin niger, meaning black In the 1600s, enslaved Africans were referred to as “ negros ” ; and the word evolved into the intentionally offensive “nigger”
By the 1800s in the Americas, it was firmly established as a weapon for destroying the spirit of black people, and two centuries later it remains one of the most racist and offensive words in the English language.
The “n-word” in our modern world continues to be deployed as a language of domination and oppression, inflicting attributes of lack of intelligence, instability, poverty, criminality, and other such demeaning characteristics.
Since the 1990’s, black artists have attempted to reclaim the word through a modified version of “nigga ” This continues to be controversial in our contemporary society
When I reflect on what guides my moral choices, the answer is usually “making my children’s lives easier than mine has been (and easier still than my parents, and theirs before).” I think that is a pretty universal and honorable life goal - grease the wheel, leave behind a soft place for the next generation to land, educate them, and protect their environment.
My Black ancestors had these goals and my white ancestors did too. Your ancestors likely had the same pursuits too. Today, you and I are either living their greatest dream or worst nightmare.
In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, my closest white friends and colleagues turned to me looking to (finally) understand more about the oppression that Black people face in our day-to-day lives. I would explain that their ancestors tried their very best to ensure their success today and that those efforts resulted in a system of rules, codes, behaviours, and beliefs that, combined, are called white supremacy. Not the tiki torch, Nazi salute type of white supremacy - I’ve actually never encountered that hideous brand. I mean the everyday, ubiquitous centreing of white people, their comfort, personal security, and dominant position in society (despite them being in the global minority)
that all of us live within and encounter everywhere.
This dream of white generations past is the world that we currently live in. Today, opposing, and increasingly extreme, ideologies are grappling for power in the hopes of either abolishing or upholding the dreams of our ancestors. Many of us wonder if we are at the brink of a cultural war… Explosive no? This play begins with an explosion. I’ve been asking myself since my first reading of it “Why? Why? Why?” It finally occurred to me that when two immovable forces collide the result is explosive, severe, life-altering, and potentially fatal. In this play, those forces are Viola’s righteousness and white supremacy.
I hope that you see yourself in this play - we have been bringing it to life, with love, just for YOU. I hope that you relate to Viola Desmond’s determination to be right, to claim some power in the face of an oppressive structure, and to pursue justice at all costs. I hope that she reminds you of the humanity of your neighbours who belong to the global majority, and inspires you to consider how the system of white supremacy is everywhere, everyday, and to think deeply about how it impacts your life and theirs.

The story of Viola Desmond is a remarkable tale of courage and conviction. However, Desmond’s stand against segregation is part of a much larger history of white supremacy in Canada, and of the brave Black Canadians who opposed such inequity. For example, in Ontario anti-Black racism has existed since before Confederation.
While Black settlement of Ontario has shaped the region’s history and culture, Black people are subject to anti-Black racism. Slavery existed in the province until the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, and as a consequence of this, some of the first Black residents of Ontario were enslaved peoples. However, abolition did not stop white supremacy in Canada; in fact, Black freedom seekers who settled in Ontario after travelling on the Underground Railroad in the 19th century found that they were often unwelcome and subject to segregation and discrimination an experience shared by many Black settlers who followed well in the 20th and 21st centuries. From the 19th century onward, Black people all over the province were subject to segregationist practices including: job and housing discrimination, school segregation, and the denial of access to facilities like hotels, restaurants, and theatres.
What those white supremacist practices had to contend with, however, was an enduring Black spirit which continually strove toward full freedom and equality in the province. Experiences of racism in the 20th century gave rise to civil rights organizations, some of which like Desmond herself were interested in direct action. In 1927 London, Ontario was host to the Canadian League for the Advancement of Colored People. The meeting brought together Black people from places like Toronto, Windsor, and the United States to strategize how best to combat racial prejudice. In 1948 a group of Black Canadians from Dresden, North Buxton, and Chatham in Ontario formed the National Unity Association for this same purpose, specifically to target segregation in places like restaurants, theatres, stores, and barbershops. This was especially a problem in the city of Dresden, the hometown of Hugh Burnett, one of the co-founders of the National Unity Association. The efforts of the National Unity Association directed media attention toward Dresden, which in turn drew scrutiny toward the issue of segregation in the province.
In the 1950s the National Unity Association joined forces with other human rights activists to help pass the Fair Employment Practices Act of 1951, which outlawed discrimination in employment, and the Fair Accommodations Act of 1954, which outlawed discrimination in public services and housing in Ontario.
The National Unity Association and its allies would continue to fight segregation in Dresden, where the Fair Accommodations Act was being violated, by holding sit-in demonstrations several years before such resistance practices were popularized by the southern United States. Eventually, the perseverance of these activists bore fruit, and the organizers were able to secure service for Black Canadians in Ontario. These acts of resistance in the face of white supremacy demonstrate the necessity and ongoing importance of Black communities fighting to ensure equal treatment, freedom, and justice for all Canadians.
Deirdre McCorkindale currently works as Assistant Professor in Black Canadian History, teaching in both the History department and the new Black Canadian Studies Minor program. She has been active in a number of public history projects connected to the history of Chatham, Ontario’s historic Black community.
