Rev. Melissa Rolle-Scott CHOSEN TO LEAD, CALLED TO SERVE Moving forward in Grace

Mt. Calvary National Church of God, Inc. in West Perrine, FL, joyously celebrated their 16th Annual Pastoral Appreciation services from March 14th to 17th, 2024, to honor Rev. Melissa Rolle-Scott, their esteemed Senior Pastor. Established in 1980, the church boasts a rich history, with its founder, Pastor Betty Ferguson-Paramore, remaining a steadfast pillar of support. The Mt. Calvary family has been abundantly blessed with Rev. Melissa RolleScott’s leadership and service as Senior Pastor for the past 16 years, surrounded by a community devoted to God. With the unwavering love and commitment of Associate Pastor James Rollison and the cherished trio of mothers, Senthius Ferguson, Ena Rollison, and Theresa Keys, alongside other dedicated members, Mt. Calvary shines as

“The Church of Genuine Hugs,” emblematic of its limitless warmth and compassion.

The recent Pastoral Appreciation service consisted of many expressions of love and appreciation adorned with an array of beautiful green and purple decorations which filled the atmosphere as a symbol of life, growth and beauty. The theme for the celebration was: Standing Up on The Inside. Throughout the celebration, special guests added to the joyous atmosphere. The festivities commenced with praise and worship led by Pastor Joel Joseph and his young adult praise team, who performed Pastor Scott’s favorite song, “I Call You Daddy.” The moderators for the event were Pastor Louis Drayton, Apostle Sheila Ingram, and Pastor Braithwaite. The

distinguished speakers included Elder Thomas Phillips, Bishop Lawrence Smith, Overseer Bishop James Brown, and Pastor Roy Peterson. Among the numerous visiting pastors were Elder Donald Henry, Pastor McGhee, Rev. Patricia Hilton, Pastor Turner and Pastor Thomas. The talented musicians who graced the occasion were Diane Smith, Gerald Ingram, Smooth Sailing Band, and Word of Life Changers Ministry.

One of the many highlights of the program was the evening Mt. Clavary’s youth showered Pastor Scott with roses and with their own personal touch on how she has impacted their lives. Love and appreciation certainly filled the room. There was nothing more moving for Pastor Scott than to have her twin grand-

sons Lawrence and Lance Scott escort her as she entered the church on the last evening of the celebration and then being serenaded by master saxophonist Micheal Emmanuel and vocalist Lionel Phillips who blessed the congregation with a powerful rendition of “I Know I’ve Been Changed.”

To enhance Pastor Scott’s remarkable 16th Pastoral Anniversary celebration, she received a delightful surprise when several of her classmates from Killian’s Class of 1976 attended. Among them were Vicki Mills, Harry Morant, and her sister Lusetha Scott. They reminisced and shared cherished memories of Pastor Scott’s integrity and intelligence. Pastor Scott’s family, the Rolles, holds a unique distinction: they are the only family with the highest number of siblings to graduate from the University of Miami. Pastor Scott and her four sisters—Jo-Ann, Rennee, Lusetha, and Edith—are all alumni of the University of Miami Hurricanes and are revered as pio-

neers for integration.

Pastor Melissa Rolle-Scott embodies grace as she fervently serves God and the Body of Christ in various spiritual roles. In addition to her spiritual leadership, she has recently been chosen to assume the dynamic position of Chief Administrative Officer for the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works. In 2022, she was honored as one of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO’s) Women Who Move the Nation in Washington, DC. and currently serves on the national and local Board of COMTO. In 2023 Pastor Scott was recognized amongst the top, most Prominent & Influential Black Women in Miami by Legacy Magazine & MIA Media.

Having served in ministry for nearly forty years, currently serves as President/CEO of Mt. Calvary Community Development Corporation, coordinated the South Dade Gospel-Fest for over 12 years at the former South-Dade Cultural Arts

Center (now The Moss Center), serves as a community advocate and volunteers for both civic and professional organizations and has devoted herself to over 32 years of dedicated public service. She is a proud mother (and grandmother) to her son Lawrence, daughter-inlove Yolanda, granddaughters Alexandria, Jasmin, Samayah and grandsons Andrew, Lance and Lawrence. In Matthew 20:26, it is stated, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”

Pastor Melissa Rolle-Scott embodies this spirit of service and leadership. Blessings and congratulations to Pastor Scott and the Mt. Calvary National Church of God family as they celebrate their 16th Pastoral Anniversary. Additionally, a heartfelt “Happy Birthday” to Rev. Melissa Rolle-Scott on May 13th. May your journey ahead be adorned with grace as you continue to exemplify steadfast leadership and unwavering service.

How Gardening Can Boost Your Health

Practicing social distancing means more time spent at home. And many people use this time to start a garden in their backyard. There’s a saying that you reap what you sow. And in the case of a vegetable garden, a rich harvest may bring more than dinner. Gardening is good for your body and mind, said dietitian Anya Guy.

So go ahead and dig in. You may go from an empty plot to a bounty. Guy said tending a garden offers an abundance of health benefits. “You will increase your intake of fruits and vegetables, ultimately because you have them right in your backyard,” she said.

Gardening also can help reduce stress and anxiety levels, and offer light physical activity. Wondering what to grow? Guys suggests a rainbow of variety because “different vegetables have a variety of different

health benefits unique to each of them.”

Chili peppers and banana peppers contain capsaicin, which has been shown to have a number of health benefits. And then there’s eggplant, which, according to Guy, “grows surprisingly well in a home garden. It’s easy to grow and it can feed a lot of people in the family.”

Another good garden go-to: tomatoes. Rich in antioxidants, tomatoes contain potassium, vitamin C and are a source of fiber.

Can’t grow a garden at home? “keep in mind that community gardens are another option,” Guy said. Embrace your green thumb, and you may be able to unpack your vegetable basket instead of a grocery bag.

NCNW Announces Host City and Hotel for the 61st Convention Location

The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) will host its 61st National Convention October 9 -13, 2024 in Baltimore, Maryland. Convention activities and event workshops will take place in the Baltimore Convention Center and the host hotel will be the Baltimore Hilton.

“We are proud to bring our convention to Baltimore, further investing in the local economy while enjoying all that the city has to offer,” said National Chair, Dr. A. Lois Keith. “Our biennial conventions are an opportunity for us to engage our constituency from across the country and discuss topics that are pertinent to anyone invested in the well-being of our communities. In a city as culturally diverse as Baltimore, it is the perfect place for NCNW to convene and strengthen our coalition of national women’s organizations while discussing strategies to combat racism, sexism and other systems hindering women and girls. I am excited for what this convention will bring and look forward to seeing all of our NCNW

sisters in Baltimore.”

“Considering the city’s rich history, waterfront attractions, and the overall cultural hub that makes Baltimore the northeastern epicenter that it is, the decision to host this year’s convention in ‘Charm City’ was a simple one,” said President and CEO Shavon Arline Bradley. “Baltimore’s beautiful Inner Harbor and convention center creates the perfect environment for our members, affiliate organizations and supporters to convene to discuss social and economic justice issues impacting Black women and girls. We are not only excited to visit Baltimore but also equally thrilled to build lasting relationships with city and state officials and the surrounding community that extend long after our convention ends.”

The organization’s biennial national convention is a meeting of the voting body, members and affiliates of NCNW to conduct business as well as a convening of Black women and their allies to discuss issues pertaining to Black women, their families,

and communities. With the local and state government being led by Mayor Brandon Scott, the youngest mayor in the city’s history, and Governor Wes Moore, the country’s only Black governor, NCNW is excited to conduct its business in a dynamic city that represents the positive potential of the future of our nation.

Convention registration opens on May 9, 2024.

NCNW is an “organization of organizations,” comprised of 330 campus and community-based sections and 37 national women’s organizations that enlightens, inspires, and connects more than 2,000,000 women and men. Its mission is to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families, and communities.

A Financial Planner’s Advice About Saving For College: Just Do It

More Floridians are saving in Florida 529 Savings Plans than ever before. In December 2017, there were just over 66,000 accounts; now, that number now is nearly 119,000 — almost double in the past five years! Why the increase?

We asked Mari Adam, a certified financial planner at Mercer Advisors in Boca Raton, to weigh in. Over her 31 years in the industry, she has talked to hundreds of Florida clients about saving for college. She said 529 savings plans are “a happy contagion,” with people spreading good news by word of mouth and opening accounts for each new grandchild. She also said that when Florida Prepaid repositioned its 529 Savings Plans to reduce fees and increase investment options three years ago, people took notice.

“It’s really now best in class,” she said. “We look out for a couple things when recommending a 529, and one of them is fees. This is one of the very lowest-cost plans out there. And they put in some really attractive investment options, with very appropriate age-based solutions and the option to choose your own investments. The simple solution is there; the sophisticated solution is there. Most do not offer that flexibility.” Parents who also buy a Florida Prepaid Plan — like she did for her two children — enjoy the bonus conve-

nience of keeping all of their investments in one location.

Feeling inspired to open an account? Adam has several pieces of advice to help you get started and be successful.

Just do it. About half of all people are still saving for college using a savings account. “It’s good to save, but that is really not the optimal way, just because of the growth and tax advantages you’re missing out on,” Adam said. “529s are clearly the Rolls Royce of the saving-for-college world.”

“The mere act of opening a 529 account and saving for college means you will end up saving twice as much for college as someone who does not plan ahead. And end up with 47% less student debt. And your kids or grandkids are over four times more likely to graduate,” she said.

Don’t delay. While it’s never too late to start, the earlier you start, the better.

“For my kids, I started when they were just like under one year old,” she said. “And that’s really the key: Get the money in there as early as possible. Let it compound, let it grow.”

CATCHING zzzz’s BENEFITS YOUR BRAIN AND BODY

Sleep is a fundamental part of life. And while it’s not entirely understood by scientists, we know it has a huge effect on how we function during the day. Dream up ways to make it a priority, because powering down for the night recharges your health.

When you’re getting enough sleep, you benefit in so many ways:

Unleash your brain power

Getting a good night’s rest helps your brain work at maximum capacity. That raises your productivity, your ability to concentrate and your emotional and social intelligence. If you’re well rested, you’ll be more empathetic. You won’t be yawning as your friend bemoans a breakup. And you’ll find the right words to encourage an overworked colleague.

Bonus: Getting enough sleep has the added perks of sharpening your memory and problem-solving skills, no matter your age.

Revitalize your body

Hitting the gym? Sleeping well can improve the quality of your workouts.

“From lifting weights to running faster, sleep means your muscles can fully rest and recover so you won’t drag your feet at the gym,” says Dr. Boris Gilyadov, sleep medicine specialist and family medicine physician at Geisinger Mount Pocono.

With enough sleep, you’ll lower your risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, depression and inflammation. You even enhance your immune system, so you’ll be in top form for fighting off viruses and bacteria.

What are the effects of not getting enough sleep?

Sleep deficiency doesn’t target one age group — it hap-

pens to children and adults alike. Stress, anxiety, narcolepsy and sleep apnea can all cause sleep deprivation. And that can lead to other problems. Some of the less-obvious effects of poor sleep? Obesity, an increased sense of pain and a weaker response to vaccines.

Chronic sleep deprivation may also increase your risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

“Sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality can have a direct impact on performance and behavior at school in children,” says Dr. Gilyadov. “Poor sleep quality includes frequent nighttime awakenings.”

So, how can you sleep better?

Hack your sleep and wake up refreshed with a few tweaks:

Set a routine. Get up and go to bed at the same time daily. Even on weekends.

Get up and at ’em. While you’re awake, add movement to your day. “Spending time outside and exercising are great ways to get a better night’s rest,” says Dr. Gilyadov. Both activities help lower stress levels, which directly impacts your quality of sleep.

Don’t sleep too much. If you’ve had enough sleep, don’t sleep more — because oversleeping isn’t good for you, either. It can raise your risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Stick to that sleep schedule mentioned above.

Turn off your phone. Put the phone away at least an hour before bed. Exposure to blue light can shorten your slumber.

Have a medical issue interfering with your sleep? Talk to your doctor. They’ll help you find the best treatment to improve your Zzzs.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne McGhee Propels Economic Development with Costco Project

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne McGhee is proud to announce a major economic development initiative that will significantly benefit the South-Dade community. In response to recent inquiries regarding the economic viability of the proposed Costco development on a County-owned site held by the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD), Commissioner McGhee outlined the substantial positive impact and economic benefits this project will bring to District 9.

“The site in question, acquired by the County for approximately $2.7 million in 2003, has remained unused by WASD, providing no value to the community for over two decades. In a strategic move to revitalize the area and boost economic growth, a leading South Florida developer has proposed to purchase the site and build a Costco store. This development will not only add the site to the County tax roll but also create local jobs and deliver lasting economic benefits to residents in the West Perrine Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) and surrounding neighborhoods,” said Commissioner McGhee.

An independent economic impact study conducted by Miami Economic Associates, a firm with over 40 years of experience in Miami-Dade County, estimates that the ten-year cumulative economic benefit from the project will exceed $217 million. This includes benefits from sales tax, real estate taxes, employment, and gasoline savings.

Furthermore, the developer has agreed to purchase the site for $8.1 million, which is higher than the assessed value established by the county property appraiser. Contrary to third-party comparisons, the developer’s

purchase price is based on the actual value of the property and not on comparables near the airport or within transit-oriented developments.

In addition to the economic benefits, the developer has committed to providing 5,000 free memberships to individuals in the area earning less than $50,000 per year. The developer has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with WASD to provide expertise at no profit for the development of 400 units of attainable housing for WASD employees on another County-owned site.

Commissioner McGhee emphasizes that Costco, known for paying the highest wages in the retail industry, must maintain consistency in wage rates among its stores and cannot comply with the Mayor’s request for a specific wage rate for this new store.

“This project represents a transformative opportunity for our community and the CRA,” added Commissioner McGhee. “It’s time to move beyond politics and unlock the potential of this underutilized site for the greater good of our residents.”

For more information, please contact Commissioner Kionne McGhee’s office: District 9

Have you been playing the Google memory game and noticed you’re getting worse each passing day? A lot of the time, your memory can deteriorate without warning, but there is a way to fight back.

This article introduces 8 foods that can get your brain back in working order and improve your top score in those memory exercises. You may even be shocked to learn that some of your daily favorites have been helping your memory all along.

Coffee

Starting your day with a cup of coffee is a no-brainer. It gets your motor running early in the morning and helps you remember everything you need to do before you head into the office. Numerous studies have found that caffeine can positively impact your short and long-term memory.

Turmeric

Turmeric is another fan favorite for those trying to live a healthy lifestyle because of its vast benefits. On top of improved memory, turmeric can help with inflammation because of its antioxidants, but it can also help arthritis, liver disease, and many other ailments.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are abundant during the fall season thanks to the festive activities centered around the scary fruit. It has a profound impact on

memory because of the zinc and magnesium components that lie within it.

With that in mind, add a few more pumpkin seeds to that pumpkin pie recipe during the fall get-togethers so everyone can receive the wonderful benefits.

Broccoli

Oh, broccoli, every small child’s worst nightmare. If only little kids knew that broccoli could help them remember why they should eat it in the first place, they’d be better off. In all seriousness, broccoli is a part of the leafy green family, known for its ability to improve memory. This is primarily because of the lutein, vitamin K, and beta-carotene elements within the food group.

Chocolate

If broccoli is a little kid’s worst nightmare, chocolate is their first obsession. Well, luckily for them, chocolate also helps with memory and keeping your head on straight during bouts of brain fog. Research has shown that consuming chocolate can improve your verbal episodic memory 2 hours after you eat it. Episodic memory helps you remember events in your life, such as where you placed your keys or what you bought from the store.

Oranges

Oranges are another tasty treat that can help your brain when you can’t find your way. This is primarily be-

cause the orange fruit has citric acid, which has been found to slow memory deterioration. These benefits are great for early-onset dementia patients who could have Alzheimer’s. So don’t be afraid to get extra orange juice in the morning because it helps you remember to feed your pet before you leave.

Green Tea

Who doesn’t love a cup of green tea when they feel sick or lounging around the house? Well, now you have another reason to drink it religiously: the healing tea can boost memory.

Green tea is full of caffeine and a molecule called L-theanine, the substances responsible for giving your brain the stuff it needs. You only have to ensure it is regular green tea, not those innocent-looking green tea shots.

Eggs

Last but certainly not least on our list is eggs. Eggs have many other benefits besides improving memory, so it’s always a good idea to crack open a few and make an omelet.

This breakfast staple boosts long and short-term memory because of the choline within the yolks. On top of making your brain sharper, it can also reduce inflammation, lessening any pain you may have.
