Three men, three generations and 53 years of service describes Goshen’s Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home. Its roots trace to 1963 when Robert Ehret, Wallace Rohrer and Donald Rieth got together to start a business. Twenty-eight years later, in 1981, Wallace Rohrer, Donald Rieth and Jerry Ehret took the reigns and today the third generation of Ehrets, including Jerry, Brant and Danae, run the funeral home. A simple sale of a used refrigerator blossomed into a second-generation business. It was May, 1975 and James Blackwood used the classifieds of The Goshen News to sell a $50 fridge. So many people responded to his ad that a light bulb went off and after reinvesting in additional used refrigerators and sewing machines Village Discount Center was born. Six years later, James and his wife Barbara helped his son open Jon’s Used Furniture, sharing space in the former Kundred Gladiola Building. In 1986 James built Furnitureland on Wilden, with a 1986 New Year Day grand opening that was so well attended police had to monitor the traffic. James retired in 2000 but Jon’s Used Furniture had several reincarnations. Moving to Dunlap in 1985 it became Jon’s Furniture Outlet before outgrowing the facility and changing again to JB’s Furniture at its present Warsaw location. Today Jon and his wife Jill operate 36,000 square feet at 2101 E. Center St. in the heart of Warsaw and serving all of Michiana. You can reach them at 574-267-6800 or www.jbsfurniture.com.

It was a Reader’s Digest article that acted as the inspiration. Ralph Schrock was thumbing through the popular magazine in 1958 when he got the idea of renting equipment. In 1960 Ralph and his wife Kathryn bought a United Rent-All franchise and went independent eight years later when they opened U-Rent-It company. In 1992 Ralph retired and sold the business to Alan and Lonna Overholder who restructured the business as Four Star Rental. A third generation is now involved as son Chad Overholser and daughter Brette Angus are purchasing the business. Chad’s daughter Brooke Willard is also involved as an employee of the company. What started out as equipment rentals is constantly evolving. New items are added regularly to solve the diverse needs of the community. Located at 1504 Bashor Road in Goshen, you can find them on Facebook or go to fourstarrental. com or call 574-533-0445.

Pilcher’s Shoes For 69 years a member of the Pilcher family has kept customers on their feet. It started when a young man, just after World War II, needed a job and went to work for a shoe store in Fort Wayne, Ind. Doug Pilcher liked it so well that in 1947 he purchased a store in Syracuse specializing in hard-to-fit feet. In 1978 son Bob joined the business and expanded to the former International Palace of Sport Museum in North Webster in 1990. Fourteen years later Bob said that he became a Christian and considers his store his ministry. He feels the store’s success is because it belongs to Jesus. Pilcher’s Shoes has been able to help people with foot and leg pain, noting that a good fit with a good pair of shoes can improve lives. Today Pilcher’s Shoes includes wife Dianne and step son Micah Gibson and Zach Rensberger. Go to pilchersshoes.net or 574834-7463 or email pilchersshoes@ gmail.com.

From humble beginnings Ideal Lawnmower Shop, Inc. has endured for 67 years selling and servicing the machinery of lawn care. Cecil and Wilma West opened Ideals’ doors in 1949 buying used Reel lawnmowers and a sharpener to sharpen lawnmower blades. Today grandson Brian Garber carries a complete line of Toro lawnmowers and snow blowers and will service most other brands. In the late 40’s the business was servicing the old fashioned push mowers. In the next decade came the advent of power mowers and in the 60s riding mowers started to hit the market. Today the lawn care evolution features zero turn mowers with larger cutting decks offering faster, smoother and more efficient cuts. Located at 528 E. Yoder-Culp Funeral Home

They combine to share seven generations of experience and 152 years of service, caring for people at their most vulnerable moments. Started in 1863 by Henry J. Culp, son Ephraim moved the business to Goshen in 1924. Eph’s sons Floyd and Elmer worked with their father at the then Ephraim Culp & Sons Funeral Home while their sons William and Robert make up the fourth generation in the Culp Funeral family. Brothers Milo and John Yoder built the present day Yoder-Culp Funeral building in 1954 and formed a new corporation with the Culps four years later. Today, the family-owned tradition continues with John Yoder’s sons, Timothy and Robin and grandson Colin, involved in the business. Changing with the times there have been three additions to the original building including a crematory built in 2007 to meet changing needs of today’s families. Extensive changes have also been made in the large visitation rooms with multiple video displays. John, Robin and Tim Yoder combine for 135 years of funeral service to the region with Colin and his wife Mackenzie, also a licensed funeral director, constituting the third generation in Goshen.

LIVING QUARTERS It has been a business that evolves with the times. Over the past 35 years, what was once a full line furniture store has found its niche as a specialty outdoor patio furniture shop, owner Linda Phillabaum says of the patio store Living Quarters. The area, Phillabaum noted, is lake oriented and it made sense to identify with that customer base. Over the past 35 years the business name changed and the inventory changed to reflect the customers in its sales territory. Located in the lake country in Syracuse, Living Quarters offers a large selection of patio furniture, wicker and rattan. Now operated by Linda as well as her sons and grandson, Living Quarters specializes in lake and outdoor furniture. For more information call 574-457-2929.

Burnworth Zollars When Rick Zollars and Bill Burnsworth purchased an automotive dealership from Wayne Reed in 1979 in Kimmel, Ind., few could have envisioned its evolution. What started with five employees now boasts 45 including two certified service/parts departments, state-of-the-art body shop, finance department with 19 available lenders, on-site car wash, loaner cars, detail department, two certification programs, and one of the largest inventories in the area to choose from. In 1964, Robert Moore created a unique rubber-in-shear suspension system for lowboy trailers. Two years later, MORryde International Inc. made the first sale and was officially incorporated growing from one product for a single industry to 10,000 products serving a variety of industries including recreational vehicles, buses, agriculture, military equipment, trucks, jeeps and more. This year, brothers Robert Moore, Jr. and Rodney Moore celebrate 50 years of business as MORryde, representing the third generation and drive the metal fabrication and chassis modification business. SOUTH SIDE SODA SHOP With a history that is as diverse as its menu, The Southside Soda Shop continues to be a favorite of local and visiting diners alike. The now-iconic eatery has undergone a number of transitions since its origin. In 1943 Morris Cripe and Hubert Anglemeyer purchased the then Corner Store and it remained a grocery until 1943. A full soda foundation and counter was installed. The South Side Soda Shop was born in 1944. Two years later Dick Puschman and Hubert Kirkdorfer took over. Hubert Jr. and his wife Evie bought out Puschman in 1950. Modern ownership began in 1984 when Dave Pottinger, Faye Peterson and Don Walters saw the promise in the Goshen landmark. The South Side Soda Shop reopened in 1986 under Nick and Charity Boyd and their daughters Hannah and Nicole. Today the often-awarded diner – including being named Indiana’s best pie and featured on the nationally televised show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” specializes in fresh salads, sandwiches and seafood as well as boasting an in-house bakery. Located at 1122 S. Main Street in Goshen, you can find out more by going to www. southsidesodashopdiner.com; Instagram @Sodashop or Facebook SouthSideSodaShop or call 574-534-3790.

John Lucchese hit it big thirty-four years ago when a fateful raffle changed his and his wife Kathy’s lives forever. It was a raffle to benefit St. Thomas and John came away $2,000 richer. That money was used to seed the idea of an Italian deli that has grown from its roots on North Main Street in Elkhart. Starting off as a deli, the business changed when John bought his first pasta machine in Chicago, the catalyst that slowly changed the deli into a restaurant. In 1984 the business moved to Jackson Blvd. and moved again to CR 17 10 years ago with a full service facility that includes a private dining room as well as a dining room and bar. Today Frank, Tonya and Michele Lucchese operate the restaurant that includes a deli cooler with various meats and salads made by Michele. Daughter Marissa is the next Lucchese in line. Located at 655 CR 17, Suite 9 in Elkhart, follow Lucchese’s on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter or go to lucchesesdeli.com or call 574-522-4137.

Fashion Farm Fifty-six years ago the idea began to take shape. The origins were simple... a small vegetable stand selling farmer’s market inventory such as sweet corn, green beans, peas and onions. From these simple beginnings Fashion Farm has grown into a multifaceted diverse corporation with a full service restaurant, greenhouse and garden center, floral and gift shop and landscaping business under the Fashion Farm moniker. Charlie Pumpkin is still a huge part of the business opening Pumpkin Fantasyland for the 45th year this fall to the generations that love to see the pumpkin displays. Owned by Russell and Patricia Becker and son Jason Becker, the Ligonier-based business’s diversity keeps it rolling all year around. The Countryscapes portion of the business includes the floral and gift shop, greenhouse and garden center and the landscape design/build divisions. Each have specialists with years of experience to help you with your specific needs. Located at 1680 Lincolnway West in Ligonier, go to www. fashionfarminc.com, see them on Facebook or call 260-894-4498.

AUTO PARTS

What started as a one-man body shop has evolved into the largest showroom of parts and truck accessories in the Midwest. Now in its second generation, Dick’s Auto Parts has changed with the times. What was once a parts and accessories store, now utilizes the internet to sell retail and wholesale parts around the globe. Opening in 1979, auto and truck parts were the sideline to the body shop. As that business grew, they moved to their current location and eventually closed the body shop with truck and auto parts becoming the sole focus of their business. With internet access, the buying and selling of parts has expanded the business to include a newly remodeled and expanded showroom. They now offer installation of purchased parts while you wait. Today, Dick and Vada and son Sean’s auto and truck parts store inventories everything from truck beds, seats, tires, wheels, tonneau covers, running boards to any body part or accessory imaginable, carrying over 800 brands. To find out more go to 50521 SR 13, north of Middlebury or dickautoparts.com, visit them on Facebook or call 574-825-7424.

THE DENTED CAN

The mission statement is simple and to the point… “The Dented Can is a discount grocery store. Our goal is to offer a variety of items at the best prices possible.” Twelve years ago, in April 2004, Paul and Brenda Royer liked the concept of a store with great food prices and brought that dream to fruition. Today The Dented Can offers an expansive inventory of foods with special product availability. A few years ago a deli with meats and cheese was added. Most recently a frozen food and produce section was the latest expansion inside the store. Featuring everything from dairy products to frozen food, fresh produce, snacks, candy and bulk foods, the family-owned The Dented Can is worth the drive, offering great selection at great prices. Visit The Dented Can at 25743 SR 119 in Goshen, see their Facebook page or call 574-862-2212.

Grace College isn’t a family run business. Grace is a family.

April 29, 2016 - The Goshen News - Generations

Grace College & Seminary has been an integral part of Winona Lake and the surrounding communities for over 75 years. At Grace, we’re proud to have served our neighbors in the past, and we look forward to serving them in new and innovative ways in the future. One way we know we can serve our community is by recognizing the rising costs of college in America today. No student or family should have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a quality college degree, which is why we decided to look for ways to make education affordable again. At Grace, our students have the option to accelerate their undergraduate degree and graduate in three years. Or, if they’re really ambitious, they can get a bachelor’s and master’s degree in four years total. Grace also offers affordable and academically accredited master’s programs that give students the chance to hone their skills and leadership abilities. So many schools talk about helping students and families stretch their dollars. At Grace, we’re actually taking action —without sacrificing Christian community and academic rigor.

Furthermore, students don’t need to worry about the creeping cost of tuition because the price for full-time undergraduate students will never be more than their current year. In addition, we’ll deduct another $500 for every year a student is consecutively enrolled. We’re also offering students all their textbook rentals for free. Combined with the three-year degree option, students can save almost $45,000 on their college education. That’s close to 50 percent savings on the typical undergraduate cost. While we’re proud of our ability to innovate, we’re equally proud of our adherence to our mission as a Christ-centered school. Certain values are hard-wired into a Grace College education.

“Grace gives you more than just an education; we give you a foundation for your future.” When our students leave Grace, they’ll have a biblical worldview that will serve them at the most pressing times in their personal and professional life. They’ll also have a set of life-long friends and mentors, who will walk with them as they navigate the obstacles of adult life. Grace College is an evangelical Christian community of higher education which applies biblical values in strengthening character, sharpening competence, and preparing for service. From accelerated degrees that open wide the door of opportunity to immersive learning experiences that take our students out of the classroom and into the marketplace and ministry, Grace gives you more than just an education—we give you a foundation for your future.
