iNDIANA BICENTENNIAL

Fair to help celebrate state milestone By SCOTT WEISSER Correspondent

GOSHEN — Happy birthday, Indiana. This year marks 200 years for the Hoosier state. That amount of zeros is cause for celebration, and that’s what’s in store at this summer’s Elkhart County 4-H Fair. The gala didn’t get off the ground overnight. Two years ago, fair officials applied to the Indiana Bicentennial Commission to have the Elkhart County festival be an officially endorsed Bicentennial Legacy Project. That approval came through during the 2014 fair, explained Robert Zell, this year’s fair president and chairman of the bicentennial committee. Bicentennial-themed events are planned throughout fair week, which kicks off Friday, July 22. On Saturday, July 23 the Indiana Bicentennial Birthday Celebration — complete with cake and ice cream, no less — is set in Heritage Park. The event begins at 2 p.m., and the

public is invited to attend. The birthday party will include an appearance by an Abe Lincoln impersonator and a performance by Goshen-based folk-rock-Americana group The Tumbleweed Jumpers. Zell also said a time capsule will be buried, adding that 4-H clubs have been invited to submit programs and other material from the fair to be included in the capsule. “I don’t think we’ll wait 100 years, but we’re talking about opening it up in 25 years,” Zell said. A bison is a key component of Indiana’s state seal, and as such the beast — of the fiberglass variety, at least — will be a guest at the fair. United Way of Elkhart County is coordinating an art project in conjunction with the Indiana Bicentennial Commission and the state Association of United Ways. According to United Way, Elkhart County artists are decorating 5-foot-tall fiberglass bison replicas that will be displayed throughout the county. One of the herd will be presented during the Heritage Park party. Zell

GOSHEN — When Ken Pletcher was president of the Elkhart County 4-H Fair Board in 1994, he had the important task of naming the grand marshal for the annual parade. Now 22 years later, Pletcher has been selected to fulfill the same role and lead the 2016 4-H Fair Parade. He was chosen by Elkhart County 4-H President Dr. Bob Zell. Zell said he met Pletcher after being appointed as a representative for the Fair Advisory Board in 2008. Today, both men serve on the Miracle of Life committee. “I immediately really respected him and the example he set for all of us on the fair board,” Zell said. “I have appreciated his advice over the years. He is an intelligent, caring man and has really helped me and others.” Pletcher and his wife Thyra live in Goshen. He has been a fair board member for 30 years. He currently serves on the Fair Foundation and the Land Development Infrastructure committee. “It’s a very honorary position and I’m deeply gratified to be selected as grand marshal,” Pletcher said. “I’m only 86 years old and I try to help wherever I can. I’m very supportive because I believe in 4-H.” Pletcher said he believes participating in 4-H helps youth develop good character, morality and ethics. He was a 4-H’er himself as a youngster in the mid-1940s. “They (4-H members) tend to be better citizens as a result of being in

4-H,” he said. His son was in 4-H along with a grandson and granddaughter.

‘Pulling together’

The parade is one small part of the fair experience, Pletcher said. “It’s the grand opening of nine days of fun,” he said. “It takes all of us (the fair board) pulling together. It’s teaching teamwork and pulling together.” Pletcher said plans for this year’s fair began at least two years ago and plans are already in the making for future fairs down the road. “We strive to make the fair better every year,” he said. “It’s a continual process. We have a Long Range Committee that makes plans that can be changed if need be...There’s a lot of work behind the scenes. We call it the fun fair for everyone, young and old.” Pletcher said he admires 4-H club volunteers, and those who represent their club on the fair board, adding that it is important for youth who live in the city and not on a farm to have representation for 4-H involvement as well. “I’m an advocate for 4-H,” he said, smiling. Pletcher said the fair board and committees work together to raise funds for many facets of the fair, because it takes a lot of fundraising to make things happen. “It takes good people and they make you look good,” he said. Getting around

As visitors make their way through the animal barns, guests are invited to stop by the recently rebuilt Dairy Feeder Calf Barn. Although the location of the barn remains the same — sandwiched between the Beef Barn to the north and Dairy Barn to the south — the new space includes plenty of room to serve as a temporary home to 234 animals, a wider walkway to lead them toward the show arena and picnic tables where 4-H’ers can rest between events. It took the club about a year to raise the majority of the $100,000 needed to build the new barn, Dairy Feeder Calf Club Leader Ken Metzler said. Several local businesses donated supplies and labor and a portion of the funding came from a matching grant for $34,000 from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, Metzler said. The building is 10 feet wider overall and much taller and more open, offering better ventilation for animals even on hot, summer days. And unlike in past years where the animals had to be split up between a

couple of buildings, this year’s contestants will all be in one place, he said. After spending a few hours walking the grounds, fairgoers can also get a lift from one of the inner grounds trams. This year, visitors in search of a ride around the grounds need only look for red steel signs shaped like barns and labeled “tram stop”, Zell said. Five designated tram stops will be marked, offering visitors a free ride to key areas on the grounds, including Heritage Park and the grandstands, among others. After a long day of fair fun, visitors can return to their vehicles the same way they entered and for those departing later in the evening, leaving the grounds should be easier, Blair said. At 9 p.m. each night during the fair, the new road will become two-lane “exit only” area to provide muchneeded relief for traffic exiting the grounds after concerts and other evening events, he said. Fair workers and law enforcement will be on hand to lead drivers off the grounds and onto the road — and road signs will help guide them home, Blair said. Follow Julie on Twitter @jbeer_TGN
