Wellington & Weddell have their eye on the community

hen a patient walks into the office of Wellington & Weddell Eye Care, staff members hope it feels like he or she is being welcomed into their home instead of a cold doctor’s office.
The practice was started in 1926 by Dr. Jim Wellington’s grandfather, but it is not simply 90 years of being in the Goshen community that sets them apart. Both Wellington and Dr. Brett Weddell are committed to being an integral part of the community by serving and giving back.
also supported the parks’ department’s triathlon and a number of other activities, including Goshen High School’s musical and athletic events. They also regularly support Elkhart County 4H by donating for the auction. “We think what the kids do with their animals is impressive and we want to show support for their hard work and determination,” Karen Wellington said. Dr. Wellington is a third-generation optometrist and Dr. Weddell has been with the practice for 15 years. They added Dr. Fei Yang to their staff last June. She is a recent graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and Miami University of Ohio.
“If it wasn’t for the community, we wouldn’t be here,” said Karen Wellington, office manager. “We want the practice to feel like an extension of our family.” Their dedication begins with the services they provide to their patients, including one of the largest frame selections in the area, contact lens fittings, and same-day emergency appointments. Their in-house lab allows them to make a lot of their own lenses and cuts down on the time patients may be without their glasses. They are full-service eye care providers and are accepting new patients. Wellington & Weddell Eye Care also employs bilingual staff members, and has for nearly 20 years. “We have so many Spanish speakers in Goshen and we want to serve them,” Karen Wellington said. “To serve them well we have to speak their language.”
