Welcome to the latest edition of The Good Times and Chris’ Corner.

This is my favourite time of year — the transition from summer to winter. The cool mornings, the beautiful afternoons, and best of all… fewer flies and mosquitoes to bother me!

In this edition, I want to reflect on how our organisations have evolved through collaboration and shared values. It’s been incredible to witness the growth and transformation that comes when we come together with a common purpose. We’re not just growing — we’re innovating, adapting, and creating new ways to serve our community, together.

Big Brown House (BBH), Integrity 4 Life (I4L), The Gray Area (TGA), and Hoop Dreams (HD) all began with a shared mission: to support our communities. What’s emerged is something even greater — a true partnership grounded in unity, service, and collective impact.

We’ve seen more and more cross-collaboration across our teams, with resources, knowledge, and opportunities being shared in powerful ways. It’s been especially rewarding to see young people from BBH and participants from I4L getting involved with Hoop Dreams — whether on the basketball court or in our Strength & Conditioning programs. It’s these moments of connection, movement, and teamwork that remind us why we do what we do.

Over the past few months, our teams have come together with a clear intention: not just to support one another, but to build something greater through true collaboration. We've started aligning our programs, sharing resources, and setting strategic goals to create a more unified and impactful experience for the people we serve. Whether it’s through integrated case management or more streamlined support systems, we’re continually working to enhance our collaboration across services — so we can better respond to the needs of our communities.

Each of our partner organisations brings something unique to the table: Big Brown House continues to meet the evolving needs of the young people they support, working alongside other service providers across the Out of Home Care space.

Integrity 4 Life is deepening relationships with the people they support, helping them feel connected and valued within communities of practice across the state.

The Gray Area is expanding its reach across NSW, delivering vital mental health support to those who need it most.

Hoop Dreams is creating new pathways for athletes of all abilities, backgrounds, and experience levels to get involved in sport and stay active.

Together, we’re discovering fresh ways to collaborate and amplify the impact of our collective efforts.

None of this would be possible without the passionate individuals behind each initiative — people driven by a shared commitment to do things better and to uphold a high standard of care and support. We know the journey isn’t over, and there’s still much work to be done. But through collaboration, curiosity, and a shared set of values, we truly believe anything is possible.

At the heart of our mission of our organisations is a simple yet powerful truth: we are there to care. This care extends beyond the young people and participants we support, it encompasses their families, our dedicated staff, our community, our wellbeing and our shared future. Our theme for this edition “Strengthening the Ties That Bind,” reminds us that relationships are the foundation of healing, growth, and hope.

Caring for Our Team Everything we achieve begins with the commitment of our team. We care for our team by fostering a workplace culture grounded in respect, connection, and reflection. We understand that therapeutic relationships start with us. By our staff feeling supported, safe, and valued – we know that they extend that same care to the young people and participants they work with. Just as we seek to build safety and belonging for the young people in our care, we also build this for the adults who care for them.

This was demonstrated over the Easter period where we saw our teams passing Easter eggs around the offices and strengthening connections over eating chocolate. Another light-

Our Community Along with caring for our team, participating with our community is also a vital part of the work we do. We actively engage community-based partners, schools, allied health professionals, cultural organisations, national and local charities, and community services to form strong, values-driven partnerships that expand the web of support around each young person we care for.

These partnerships are not just functional, they are relational. They are built on shared purpose, trust, and mutual respect. When we work together with our wider community, we multiply the impact of our efforts. Whether it’s a local school embracing trauma-informed practices, a community group offering cultural connection, charity, or a health service co-creating support plans with us, each of these ties strengthens the circle around a young person.

Our Young People, Participants & Families Our work with our young people and their families is built around the concept that families are central to the child’s identity and healing journey. We strive to create environments where family is not just involved, but included. Family time is recognised as a ritual that reaffirms belonging. Whether it’s a Sunday lunch together at the park or a video call after school, these moments strengthen the emotional ties that bind children to their roots.

During Easter, we honoured the family traditions and memories of our young people through supporting them to continue Easter family rituals that are important to them. This included making pancakes for breakfast on Easter morning, having Easter egg hunts and receiving Easter packs that contained eggs, plush toys and PJ’s. We recognise that celebrations like Easter are not just events on a calendar — they are the threads that bind our participants to their identity and history. When family traditions are preserved and celebrated, children and young people feel seen, valued, and connected.

For our young people and families, life story work plays a powerful role in strengthening the ties that bind. It helps young people make sense of their journey, connect with their past, and build an understanding about who they are. It’s more than just documenting facts, it’s about honouring experiences, relationships, and growth.

Our teams exhibit this through their heartfelt commitment to creating personalised photobooks for our young person of their time with us. These books, filled with memories, milestones, and moments of joy, are gifted to the young people as they transition out of our service. They serve as tangible reminders that their story matters, that they were valued and cared for, and that their time with us is a chapter worth remembering.

Our Future Looking ahead, our dedication to nurturing meaningful relationships with our staff, families, young people, participants, and community will continue to foster a culture rooted in care, connection and belonging. How the training we deliver helps educate our staff on the Importance of genuinely caring for our YP's and Communities.

Supporting children, young people, and participants who have experienced significant trauma and adversity requires more than just good intentions. It demands high levels of empathy, acceptance, sensitivity, availability, and a genuine investment in their lives.

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and CARE training are crucial in equipping our teams with the skills to foster positive developmental relationships. These approaches help us transform how we interact with the children, families, and the wider community we serve.

51 hours Webinars: 6 hours of TCI Webinars, including topics on Power Struggles, Active Listening, and Applying TCI to Family Time.

CARE Training: 12 hours

Case Management Training: 15 hours of online workshops

Our ongoing training across the organisation emphasises the vital role of building developmental relationships. This focus aims to ensure that children, families, and participants feel safe and secure in all our support efforts. Trauma and adversity can severely impact a young person's sense of safety, trust, and connection, thereby hindering their ability to form healthy relationships. Establishing secure attachments is therefore fundamental to our approach. By continuously developing these developmental relationships, we can assist children in regulating their emotions through our calm presence, validation of their responses, and provision of emotionally safe interactions. Ultimately, our teams play a key role in helping to rebuild trust and resilience in the lives of the children, families, and participants we support.

This is approximately 210 hours of training for this quarter.

with our Marketing Team

Before starting TCI training, I wasn’t sure what to expect. In my office role at Big Brown House, I didn’t think it would apply to me—but I was surprised by how valuable it was. I gained insight into the challenges our frontline staff face and picked up practical tools I can use in both work and life. Having worked in youth services without any formal training before, I often felt unprepared. This experience gave me confidence and clarity. Role-playing, which I initially dreaded, became a highlight, and connecting with staff across roles made the training even more meaningful.

Day 1 We began with introductions and explored Milieu spaces and their impact on young people. Through case studies, we examined factors affecting challenging behaviours and trauma responses, discussing ways to reduce these risks. The focus on self-reflection helped us consider how we can improve our support to young people.

Day 2 We focused on active listening and practiced our skills through role-playing exercises.

Although I was initially hesitant, I quickly realised how valuable this practice was. The day emphasised applying what we had learned and prepared us for the final assessment.

Day 3

On the final day, we reviewed everything and prepared for the afternoon’s assessment.

We practiced techniques in pairs and received feedback from trainers. After the roleplay assessment, we had time to reset before taking the final test.

SYDNEY LEADERSHIP TCI Refresher

In January, our Practice and Training Officer, Steph Tonna, led the Sydney Leadership TCI refresher training—a day filled with insightful discussions, shared learning, and of course, plenty of snacks (including a well-earned pizza lunch!).

SYDNEY’S NEW SPACE

At the beginning of the year, our Sydney team embarked on an exciting new chapter with an office upgrade—moving from a small, confined space to a larger, more functional office. This new location provides dedicated meeting rooms, more space for training, and a setting that truly feels like our own. While we’re still in the process of settling in, it’s already shaping up to be a place that fosters growth and connection!

Our new office is based in Pemulwuy, on the land of the Darug people. This area holds deep historical and cultural significance to First Nations Australians, named after the Bidjigal warrior Pemulwuy. A fearless leader, Pemulwuy led resistance efforts against settlers in response to the encroachment on Aboriginal lands and the abduction of Aboriginal people and children—actions that resonate with our mission to support the healing of Aboriginal children and work towards their safe reunification with family.

Just down the road lies Prospect Hill, an important Aboriginal site and the location of the first largescale, organised resistance against colonisation, led by Pemulwuy. In 1805, this land became the setting for a powerful moment of reconciliation, as Aboriginal leaders, led by the wisdom of their women, reached out to begin dialogue with British settlers.

We honour the enduring legacy of Pemulwuy, the resilience of the Darug people, and we pay our respects to their Elders, past, present, and emerging. As we settle into this new space, we remain committed to strengthening connections, fostering healing, and upholding the values of the communities we serve.

WHS DAY: FOCUSSIING ON FATIGUE On 28 April 2025, we observed World Day for Safety and Health at Work and Workers’ Memorial Day, reflecting on workplace safety and remembering those who’ve lost their life at work. Our Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Committee, representing all departments, meets monthly to review safety concerns and address risks.

This year, we’re focusing on fatigue management, a serious yet often overlooked safety issue. Fatigue isn’t just feeling tired, it’s a state of physical and mental exhaustion caused by lack of sleep, long hours, or stressful situations. For those who drive for work, the dangers of fatigue are particularly serious, with studies equating its impact to driving under the influence.

Effective fatigue management includes adequate sleep, safe work schedules, and regular breaks. Our WHS Committee is committed to raising awareness and promoting strategies to reduce fatigue. Prioritising our health and wellbeing helps create a safer, more responsible workplace for all.

Guided by the principles of CARE: Creating Conditions for Change, we continue to work towards strengthening the family ties that form the heart of a child’s identity and wellbeing.

One of the core principles we focus on is Family Involvement, where the concepts of claiming and inclusion are central. When children enter our service, we aim to create welcoming environments where children are able to feel connected and we can continue to support forming positive attachments which include promoting and maintaining their connections to their family, kin, and community.

We know that parents remain a vital part of a child's story, even when they cannot live together. Maintaining those connections—through routines, rituals, and culturally appropriate practices—helps children retain a sense of self and cultural identity. We see this come to life in the way we support family contact, create opportunities for shared experiences, and build bridges between families, carers, and communities.

Our commitment to safe, high-quality family time services ensures that family bonds are not just maintained but strengthened. With structured, supportive environments, we aim to create positive, healing experiences that will stay with children well beyond their time in care.

A STRONG START TO 2025

Sydney Operations

Our focus in the first quarter has been streamlining daily operations, boosting compliance, and ensuring that our frontline staff are armed with the right information at the right time. Strengthening our partnerships with Youth Liaison Officers (YLOs) and case managers has been key to making sure intake planning and safety management are stronger than ever.

Family connections have remained a cornerstone of our work. Staff have supported children to maintain regular contact with families across NSW, helping them reconnect not just with family, kin, and community, but also supporting our Aboriginal children in their connection to Country. For others where connections were limited, we’ve found creative ways to build relationships through community outings like visits to local parks and skate parks—small steps that are making a big difference.

We are working closely with local police, RFS, and other community services, and are planning an online safety session with YLOs for all our young people. We’ve also secured passes to sporting events —another opportunity to connect children with family and community in a meaningful way.

We are providing representation at the Liverpool LGA community council networking events, strengthening partnerships that will open more doors for the children and young people we support.

We are looking forward to hosting a smoking ceremony and a formal opening of a new office with a local Elder—an important step in ensuring our service remains culturally grounded.

Hunter, Central Coast & Muswellbrook In the Hunter and Central Coast regions, the need for quality support services continues to grow. We are actively working to expand our services to meet this demand. We are focused on securing additional properties and recruiting more Therapeutic Support Workers, ensuring that we can continue to provide essential care and support to vulnerable young people across our communities.

Across all sites, our teams are deepening their work around family connection, health advocacy, and education advocacy. Strengthening these supports ensures that children not only heal, but thrive.

STANDOUT STORIES STRENGTHENING STABILITY THROUGH COLLABORATION One standout story from our CSS Team reflects everything BBH stands for.

Over the past two years, the team has supported a young person with complex needs through a coordinated, multi-agency approach. With persistence, care, and collaboration involving family, carers, school staff, and DCJ, the young person has made incredible progress—recently transitioning to partially unsupervised family time and settling into a new permanent carer arrangement with calm and confidence. We’ve seen a real reduction in complex behaviours, showing what’s possible when young people are consistently supported by a strong, caring team.

This success is a testament to the resilience of the young people we support— and the dedication of our staff who walk alongside them every step of the way.

STRONGER TEAMS, STRONGER SUPPORT Western Region

In our Western Region, our primary goal is growth, with a particular emphasis on recruitment and increasing new intakes. To expand our services, we've been actively building external relationships.

Internally, we've been refining our structures and planning processes to ensure our staff can maintain the highest standards of compliance.

We are also dedicated to the development and skill-building of our therapeutic support workers. This focus will ensure they are wellequipped to provide the best possible support for the children and young people in our care.

Perhaps the most exciting development this quarter is I4L’s foray into Support Coordination.

Already fielding referrals from eager providers and participants, the early response has been overwhelmingly positive. With demand growing, the organisation is now exploring the possibility of establishing Support Coordination as a standalone service line—offering a new way to guide individuals through the complexities of the NDIS landscape.

Activity within Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Individualised Living Options (ILO) homes has spurred meaningful engagement with families, participants, and stakeholders. As Term 1 comes to an end at Newcastle’s freshest hoop studio, Hoop Dreams Academy continues to grow into more than just a basketball program — it is evolving into a place where dedication, development, and community merge together. Full of energy, laughter, and relentless hustle, 2025 has kicked off with momentum and meaning, setting the tone for a powerful year ahead.

Term 1 of 2025 marked an exciting chapter for the Hoop Dreams Academy, with athletes of all ages and skill levels stepping into an 8-week journey of growth, connection, and commitment. With 24 athletes enrolled in our Academy Development Program, the energy was palpable — two to three sessions a week saw players sharpening their skills on court while building strength and resilience in our tailored strength and conditioning (S&C) classes.

The hard work paid off. Across the term, we witnessed remarkable progress in confidence, teamwork, and performance. A number of our athletes reached an exciting milestone: selection into the Falcons Academy squad. These achievements are a testament to the consistency and determination that’s becoming a trademark of the HD community.

At the heart of the program, though, it’s about more than just skills and results. It’s about the culture we’re creating — one of support, encouragement, and shared ambition. We’re building something meaningful, where families, coaches, and athletes come together to back one another and grow, both individually and as a team.

MAKING LITTLE DREAMS COME TRUE Our youngest group — the Little Dreamers — were right there with us.

Four bright young ballers completed their first term with Hoop Dreams, diving into fun sessions that focused on teamwork, hand-eye coordination, and foundational skills designed to ignite a love for the game. These sessions were full of laughs, learning, and those small but powerful moments where confidence begins to take root.

ENDING ON A HIGH The term ended on a high, with all HD athletes coming together for a big outdoor fitness session — a fun and energising way to celebrate the effort and energy they brought every week. From the sidelines to the sessions, it was clear: something special is happening here.

BIG THINGS TO COME As we gear up for Term 2, the momentum is building. With our Academy Development Program entering its second term and a new Little Dreamers group preparing to launch, excitement is in the air. There's a growing sense of pride and connection — a genuine community forming around the shared dream of giving young athletes a space to grow, thrive, and chase their goals.

This kind of environment doesn’t happen by chance. It’s supported by the people who believe in potential, who see value in grassroots development, and who understand the long-term impact of nurturing both character and skill. It’s a collective effort, made possible through the shared commitment of families, coaches, and those who quietly champion programs like ours from behind the scenes.

Why do you think strong community relationships are essential for overall wellbeing?

Having strong community relationships gives you a different type of connection than to family members or friends. Connecting with the community allows you to feel apart of something larger and feel like you can make a difference in the lives of others. You may meet people who you never thought of as people you would get along with, but they could become your best of friends.

What are some small but meaningful ways you show care and support in your daily work?

We have so many people come through the practice each day, the least I can do is try to remember them and build rapport. Greeting people by their names could make their day, just knowing that someone took the time to know and remember them. Also ensuring that when I do greet people it is with a smile and a polite demeanour, no matter what I may be going through that day. With this line of work, it's important to build relationships with our clients to help support them in feeling as safe and comfortable as possible, so they may have a greater therapeutic outcome - no matter how daunting the session may be.

What’s one key lesson you’ve learned about the power of caring relationships in this work?

You never know how your presence or words may make someone else feel. You may think that you don’t make a large impact on someone within day-to-day interactions, but you absolutely can. Remembering this is helpful to ensure that you are always putting your best foot forward, because you never know how you may impact someone else’s story.

When I was younger, I didn’t fully understand community, only the ache of being left behind and watching others slip through the cracks.

I wrote, constantly, dreaming of a world where no one is forgotten. That journey led me inward, to ask what I could offer, and how we could share care without harm. Now supporting children, young people and families, I see the same longing to belong.

Community isn’t just a word - it is a lifeline.

Strong community relationships are not a luxury.

They are survival.

They are medicine.

They offer safety, connection and hope. For me wellbeing grows from these roots, through shared joy, pain and presence. It’s how we heal together.

I’ve learned that cultural diversity is essential for building trust and meaningful connection. It allows children to feel seen, families to feel respected, and teams to grow through shared learning.

When we honour culture we create spaces that are not only inclusive, but safe from racism, erasure, and harm. Diversity challenges assumptions, deepens our practice, and shifts care from transactional to transformative.

Things that fill my cup: Going back to Adelaide and seeing my boys and granddaughters. Seeing how well they’re doing with their own immediate family and work life.

Dog, Cat, fish, bird, horse, lizard or ferret? I do not currently have any pets.

If I was to choose, I would choose a dog.

I have two rescue dogs back in Adelaide who are with my son now. I have always been around dogs most of my life and do believe truly that they are all products of their environment.

When people feel truly heard and valued, it enhances personal well-being and strengthens the broader community. In contrast, a lack of authenticity can lead to misunderstandings and disconnection, impacting relationships on a larger scale.

What are some small but meaningful ways you show care and support in your daily work?

I demonstrate care and support by being honest, respectful, and reliable in my actions.

Hoop Dreams celebrates

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY For International Women’s Day our female athletes, their mums, Hoop Dreams coaches, and BTS team came together to celebrate International Women's Day! It was a chance to celebrate the awesome female community that we have at Hoop Dreams and connect with each other over the love of basketball.

This event provided a fantastic opportunity for our female athletes and their parents to get to know each other better and form stronger friendships within the Hoop Dreams community.

Our fierce female coaches Felicity and Maryn, joined by Meg from our Marketing department, led an info session that provided our athletes with advice, tips, and tricks on what its like to be a successful woman in sports.

We discussed the links between leadership and sports, highlighting the importance of skills such as

teamwork, problem solving, and effective communication, and how our athletes learning through sport can be transferrable to other aspects of life.

The girls learnt about the sporting journeys of each of the speakers, how they dealt with injuries, and set backs, importance of having mentors and support, along with the importance of balance, mental health, and listening to their bodies.

There was even time to shoot some hoops and have a cupcake provided by Cupcake Espresso.

This Valentine’s Day, Integrity 4 Life, Big Brown House, and The Gray Area joined forces once again to visit Ronald McDonald House Newcastle with a shared mission: to spread love and comfort to families through the Meals from the Heart program.

Now in their third visit to the House, the team prepared a wholesome spread designed to nourish not just bodies, but hearts and spirits too.

Many families staying at Ronald McDonald House have had to leave everything behind to be close to their seriously ill or injured children receiving care at John Hunter Children’s Hospital. The House plays a vital role in supporting these families, offering a space of care, connection, and stability during incredibly difficult times. Meals from the Heart is one way the community can step in to help—by sharing a meal, and in doing so, sharing a little joy.

The team—including BBH and I4L Team Leaders along with Shared Services—hit the ground running, quickly getting to work in the kitchen. From family-favourite spaghetti bolognese to creamy red pesto pasta, the menu was a hit. Even a batch of very burnt cookies made it into the bin with a laugh, adding to the memory of the day.

Recognising and leaning into each other’s strengths, the group collaborated seamlessly, creating a warm and welcoming experience for every family who came through the doors. The food served was a reflection of the team’s shared effort, care, and genuine heart.

Dear Ronald McDonald House, Meals from the Heart meant so much to me because it reflects my love for providing support, care, kindness, and compassion, especially to those who need it most. It was a truly special opportunity to give back and make a meaningful difference in the lives of people in the community during their times of need.

Working alongside my BBH team was such a rewarding and fun experience - we had a good laugh about Meg loading the dinner with mushrooms, burning the cookies became a funny memory too, but what really meant the most was the gratitude from those who received our meals and the smiles on their faces.

Meals from the Heart not only brought me personal joy and happiness from giving, but also knowing I was helping make the families evening in the Ronald McDonald house a little easier and hopefully a little brighter. I look forward to giving back again next year and continue spreading kindness, all while having fun along the way.

Tell us a little bit about Chance2Dancewhat is your vision for the community in the way of the opportunities you provide?

Chance2Dance is a space where we want everyone to enjoy the world of dance—to explore as much as they like and experience it until their heart is full, regardless of ability.

We first connected at the International People’s with a Disability Day and we loved the energy that yChance2Dance brought to the community and seeing first hand the positive impact you had - it was definitely a memorable moment for us. What are some of the most memorable moments for your dancers at Chance2Dance?

Definitely! We’ve been invited to perform with council members, which is always an exciting opportunity. We've created so many great memories—each performance leaves our dancers feeling fulfilled for days. Friendships are formed, confidence grows, and our dancers are met with appreciative audiences.

Some of our team members are heading to the USA in July, which is something we’re really looking forward to and know will be a memorable experience.

How do you see dance as a tool for building strong connections and a sense of belonging within the community?

With more and more acceptance in the community for everyone—regardless of ability —it’s both empowering and a testament to what people are capable of. Dance is everywhere, but it's not always accessible to everyone. We make it possible for everyone to be a superstar and take part in what they love.

The benefits of movement, music, and connection extend far beyond class time. How do you see the confidence and friendships built in your sessions influencing other aspects of your dancers’ lives?

It’s powerful. Our dancers know who they are, and they believe they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Each week, the bonds between them grow—there are parties, getaway plans, and plenty of catch-ups. Just being backstage and hanging out together is all part of the journey. It’s incredibly reassuring to see that dance still brings the same benefits I experienced during my own dancing days. It’s a whole new world—an amazing world.

As Chance2Dance continues to grow, what are your hopes for expanding the network of support and opportunities for dancers of all abilities? How can the wider community play a role in strengthening these ties?

I think the main thing is to keep our dancers performing their hearts out—continuing to wow audiences with their talent, professionalism, and feel-good energy. It’s the little things, like music and dance, that turn out to be the BIG things and more opportunity for strengthening relationships.

We’d love to perform at more places and events, building stronger connections with our community through movement, a friendly smile, the sound of applause, and the joy of shared experiences.

Hope, Progress, & Purpose 2025 Research Showcase at Children’s Cancer Institute On Monday, 7th April, the Children’s Cancer Institute in Sydney opened its doors for the annual Research Showcase—a powerful evening that brought together researchers, supporters, and families united by one purpose: curing childhood cancer.

Held both in-person and online, the event highlighted how far research has come—and how close we are to changing the future for children facing cancer.

A Night of Breakthroughs & Brave Stories The evening featured presentations from some of Australia’s leading researchers, including: Dr Mark Pinese and Dr Noemi Fuentes-Bolanos, who unveiled new

findings into childhood cancer risk. Their research marks a groundbreaking shift toward prevention, not just treatment—offering hope that one day we can stop cancer before it even starts.

Rob Salomon and Dr Neevika Manoharan, who demonstrated the

transformative potential of liquid biopsy. This technology, still in its early days, is already revolutionising how childhood cancers are diagnosed and monitored—less invasively, more accurately, and with faster turnaround times.

The highlight for many was a thought-provoking Q&A session with the speakers, joined by Associate Professor Mark Cowley and moderated by Chelsea Mayoh. Their insights showcased the real-world impact of translational research—bridging the gap between lab discoveries and clinical application to improve and save young lives.

Stories That Inspire Action Among the most moving moments of the evening was the courageous appearance by Mel and Dave, who shared the story of their son Tom, diagnosed with medulloblastoma at just five years old. Their honesty and strength were a stark and emotional reminder of why this work is so important—and why community support is vital.
