HARLEM “Hometown” EDITION HARLEM LITTLE LEAGUE (HLL) has become this community’s best-known youth sports organization, garnering national and international attention. In 1989, with 129 players on eight teams, HLL became the first officially chartered Little League in Harlem in over 20 years. HLL offers baseball to boys and girls ages 5-12. The goal is to develop big league citizen’s, not big league ball players. They emphasize children having fun while playing competitive baseball. FIGURE SKATING IN HARLEM (FSH) is a pioneering, not-for-profit 501c3 organization founded in 1997. Its mission is to provide exciting new educational, cultural, and athletic opportunities for girls in the Harlem community through their unique discipline and the art of figure skating. Using figure skating as a powerful magnet, FSH provides girls who live in Harlem with an innovative ice skating and educational program designed to build positive self-images, teamwork, leadership, and academic achievement. HARLEM JUNIOR TENNIS AND EDUCATION PROGRAM (HJTEP) is a not-for-profit organization that offers low-cost tennis lessons in Harlem. They have a highly qualified and caring staff who are all USPTA and USPTR certified teaching professionals. Tennis teaches kids essential life skills, sportsmanship, self-discipline, social and emotional competence, and how to fight obesity and lead healthier lives. HARLEM SEEDS’ mission is to inspire young people to live long, healthy lives by empowering kids to make appropriate food and lifestyle choices. “Healthy living is a right, not a privilege.” Harlem Seeds was founded by sisters Michele Hatchette and Stephanie Mack, who were born and raised in Harlem. Deeply committed to their community and its youth, the organization was established to address the most pressing health issues facing Harlem children today. HARLEM TAE KWON DO (HARLEMTKD) began as a faraway dream for Master Malick Coulibaly dit Fall. “It’s not just about martial arts,” Master Fall says. “Harlem Tae Kwon Do is about community. Success is not about making money, but about making a difference in someone’s life. There are a lot of single parents who need that extra bit of discipline for their children or need a role model for their children.” Taekwondo changed and affected his life, and he wants to do the same for someone else. Classes are dedicated to teaching children and adults of all ages the values of discipline, respect, concentration, and selfconfidence, along with strength training, coordination, and self-defense. DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM (DTHS) both nationally and internationally, presents a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. The Company brings new life to the art form of classical ballet.
