Progress to Success
Choosing how to progress in your career is one of the most important decisions you will make. We can support you on your grounds management journey, whether it’s through our membership o ering, education and training, or our expert advice.
We are the UK’s leading professional development organisation in turf care, o ering a wide range of courses and qualifications to prepare you for a successful future. Our programmes recognise the broad skills and knowledge you have developed throughout your career, whether you are new to the industry, have a few years’ experience, or are considering management-level qualifications.
Our courses cover turf maintenance and management across a variety of sports, including bowling greens, cricket pitches, football and rugby pitches, reinforced and artificial surfaces, 3G pitches, racecourses, and general grounds. Core subjects are covered, with clear progression pathways and opportunities for further development.
We are accredited to the Department for Education's matrix Standard, the quality framework that measures the provision of information, advice, and guidance, supporting individuals in their choices around career, learning, and development. Every year, thousands of grounds sta train with us, and many undertake our qualifications, reflecting our commitment to professional recognition and continuous development.
To support career progression, we have developed the Grounds Management Framework, linking recommended education levels to the standard of a playing surface. This framework guides volunteers at grassroots level through to Certified Grounds Director standards.
We have also launched Training Needs Analysis, a service to help managers and grounds sta map out their learning and development journey. This benefits both those engaged in formal appraisal systems and those following more informal development programmes.
We are here to help you make the right decisions for your future. If you have any questions or want guidance on your learning journey, please contact learning@thegma.org.uk.

STRONG REPUTATION AT THE GMA
“ My background is in digital project management and business improvement.
After my partner and I took the helm at Ashwood, I was eager to not be stuck behind a desk every day. I needed to get my hands dirty and educate myself in the process on the day-to-day operations.
I needed to gain a better understanding of the maintenance required for football pitches in order to provide value to our clients. I chose to study with the GMA because of their strong reputation in the industry as a subject matter expert and felt confident I would gain the knowledge I needed.
I enjoyed the level of detail that went into the course as well as the best practice suggestions and schedule of works. If you're looking for a course, then you can't find much better than those being o ered by a trusted subject matter expert.

RAISING STANDARDS IN CARDIFF'S PARKS
Craig Talbot of Cardi Council’s Parks Department has completed the Level 6 Professional Certificate in Turf Surface Consulting – our highest-level qualification.
Craig began his career as a seasonal gardener with Cardi Council’s Parks Department and, within a year, became a full-time employee responsible for maintaining bowling greens and other sports pitch markings across Cardi ’s parks.
Over time, he progressed to the role of working supervisor. Following the retirement of the area manager, he began to focus on improving sports playing surfaces across the city.
Today, Craig leads a team of seven responsible for maintaining almost 100 winter sports pitches, as well as summer sports facilities including softball, American baseball, touch rugby, British baseball, running tracks, Gaelic football and 11 cricket tables - hosting around 600 games each season.
“This has been a great career journey of 24 years and still counting,” said Craig. “I saw this course as a vital part of my development in my role to keep increasing the standards for all participants using park pitches.
“This course also allowed me to understand the whole process of creating documentation to complement any future improvement plans for individual parks, sports or individual sports teams looking for pitch improvements.”
The GMA’s commitment to delivering high-quality education and development was a key factor in Craig’s decision to study with us.
“The GMA is the leading industry body for the sports turf and grounds care sector in the country,” said Craig. “They have a fantastic network of experts for guidance and learning resources that are readily available.”
Craig has also completed a number of foundation, Level 1 and Level 2 courses in various sports - yet his appetite for learning remains strong.
“I wanted to do this for myself to gain more experience. Cardi Council recognises the importance of managing and maintaining facilities to the highest standards possible and this comes through grounded training and sound knowledge.
“This qualification will help me to evaluate issues
which need assessing, with a detailed understanding of a way forward. It will help to inform and give assurances to facility users and senior management on solutions and to support potential identification for funding investment opportunities.”
And Craig isn’t stopping there…
“I plan to carry on using the GMA training courses and qualifications to keep and maintain natural playing surfaces for everyone to use and enjoy whatever they use Cardi parks for,” he said. “If you love looking after pitches, squares, diamonds, or whatever playing field it is you will not get better assistance than the GMA.”

SOFT SKILLS
Improving Your Soft Skills
A soft skill is a personal attribute that supports situational awareness and enhances an individual's ability to get a job done. The term 'soft skills' is often used interchangeably with 'people skills' or 'emotional intelligence'. Unlike hard skills, which describe a person's technical ability to perform a specifically defined task, soft skills are broadly applicable across job titles and industries. It's often said that while hard skills might get someone an interview, soft skills will help that person obtain and retain the job.
88% of GMA learners who completed an online training course (and who completed the soft skills survey) with the GMA stated that they had made Good to Significant improvement in a range of soft skills. This extremely high improvement factor has been maintained since soft skill surveys were introduced in June 2021.
Specific soft skills improvements (ratings of Good to Significant) are indicated as:

FIVE YEARS OF PITCH TRANSFORMATION
Burnley Belvedere and Calder Sports Club has reinvented its playing surfaces thanks to the hands-on advice from the Ground Management Association’s pitch advisory service and the support of the Grass Pitch Maintenance Fund.
Over five exciting years, targeted investments in maintenance and equipment have taken two pitches from basic to good and advanced respectively, improving playability and energising a club with a growing number of teams.
Early Investment in Pitch Quality
When the grant was initially secured in 2020, the club went straight to work on the basics to combat surface wear and drainage issues. They partnered with a contractor to carry out essential season-end maintenance, which included scarifying, verti-draining, deep-tine slitting, applying and brushing in 50 tonnes of sports sand per pitch, seeding and fertilising.
As pitch conditions improved, interest in the club grew, leading to the formation of junior boys’ and girls’ teams and a senior ladies’ squad.
Equipment funding just a year later enabled the purchase of a tractor and groomer, laying the groundwork for more sustainable in-house pitch management.
Building Self-Su ciency
By the third year, the club recognised that spending £5,000 annually on contractor maintenance was unsustainable for them. They decided it was time to invest in their own gear. With new funding, they acquired a dimple seeder, deep-tine slitter, fertiliser spreader and a spray-jet line marker.
This transition significantly reduced reliance on external contractors, allowing a more cost-e ective maintenance programme whilst upholding high pitch standards.
Addressing Drainage Challenges
Despite the purchase of the new equipment, maintenance can only go so far - underlying issues continued to prevent safe play. Their second-team pitch developed severe water retention which caused regular match cancellations and concerns over player safety. A GMA report identified poor drainage connectivity as the root issue, recommending a full-pitch gravel banding system to link the pitch to existing drainage. Once the new drainage system was installed, the pitch began to show steady improvement, with waterlogging issues significantly reduced and playability gradually restored.
By 2024, the main pitch, too, faced its own drainage challenges, particularly in its wide areas. The club engaged the services of the GMA’s Turf Care Advisory Service, with experts visiting their site. The investigation found that the old drainage system (installed back in the
1970s) didn’t extend to the wings, leading to water build-up. The tailored plan included installing two parallel drains along each wing, adding a carrier drain along the pitch’s lower section to funnel excess water into the main drainage basin and sand-banding the pitch to integrate with the club’s ageing drainage system.
The plan was then devised and funding was secured for new drains to cover the a ected areas. Works were completed less than a year later, followed by immediate renovations. The club also secured additional funding for a seeder, allowing them to undertake larger renovation projects as the grant tapered o , stretching their budget further.
Bernard Casey, Chairman Burnley Belvedere FC, said: “It’s vitally important that clubs make early contact with their County FA and the Grounds Management Association. It’s good to have them on board and you will benefit greatly from their ongoing involvement.”
Thanks to a combination of GMA services and funding choices, Burnley Belvedere and Calder Sports Club has transformed its pitches into high-quality, durable playing surfaces.

TURNING CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH EXPERT SUPPORT
Nestled in the coastal town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, AFC Newbiggin is a determined grassroots club based at Newbiggin Sports and Community Centre. With just one volunteer looking after its pitch, the club has long relied on dedication rather than resources to keep things running smoothly. But after a particularly dry summer, cracks, quite literally, began to show.
As the new season kicked o , both home and visiting teams raised concerns about the pitch’s condition. Recognising that they needed expert help, Northumberland County FA stepped in and called on the Grounds Management Association’s (GMA) Pitch Advisory Service. The aim? To get the pitch back to a safe, playable standard, and to help the club build long-term resilience against the increasingly unpredictable weather.
The GMA’s Regional Pitch Advisor carried out a detailed site inspection, producing a comprehensive report with practical, step-bystep recommendations.
With support from a GMA Corporate Supporter contractor, the club wasted no time putting the advice into action. The di erence was soon visible. Grass coverage improved, the surface strengthened and players began noticing the change.
The pitch presented a unique challenge. Being both primary and secondary drained meant it struggled to retain water and nutrients. The GMA team worked closely with the club to schedule maintenance around autumn rainfall, ensuring the grass could establish properly.
Luke Collins, Club Development Lead at Northumberland FA, explained how collaboration between the County FA, GMA and the
club helped build skills as well as better turf.
“At Northumberland FA, we’ve developed a close working relationship with AFC Newbiggin & their grounds team to enhance the playing surface at Newbiggin Sports Centre,” Luke said.
“The club’s volunteers have engaged in educational workshops delivered by the County FA and GMA collaboration, as well as GMA online learning opportunities. They’ve also received both Grass Pitch Maintenance and Machinery Funding through The Football Foundation after completing a PitchPower inspection.”
The educational side proved just as valuable as the physical improvements. In the past, the club had unknowingly renovated during hot, dry periods when seed wouldn’t take. This time, through the GMA’s guidance, they learned how to time their work with the weather, ensuring that each e ort counted.

“Following their PitchPower inspection, the club worked closely with the contractor to improve the surface,” Luke continued. “When drier summers caused concern, a follow-up visit with the GMA Regional Pitch Advisor provided additional technical support and guidance, resulting in significant improvements.”
Today, AFC Newbiggin’s pitch tells a di erent story. With the help of the GMA’s Pitch Advisory Service, Northumberland FA and industry partners, the club has gained the confidence and know-how to keep it that way.
