LECTIO II AD MATUTINUM

Taedet animam mean vitae meae

Dimittam adversum me eloquium meum: Loquar in amaritudine animae meae

Dicam Deo: Noli me condemnare: indica mihi, cur me ita iudices

INTROITUS

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DEAD

LESSON II AT MATINS (Q a e )

My soul is weary of my life

I dismiss my own speech against myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul I will say unto God: Do not condemn me but show me wherefore Thou contendest with me.

Shall it seem a good thing unto Thee that Thou shouldest blame and oppress me being the work of thy hands, and assist the counsel of the wicked?

Hast Thou eyes of flesh, or seest Thou as man seeth?

Are Thy days as the days of man?

Are Thy years as man s years?

Thou that enquirest after my iniquity and searchest after my sin, Surely thou knowest that I have done no wrong: And there is no-one who can deliver me from Thine hand.

MASS FOR THE DEAD

INTROIT (F ll Ch i )

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, And may light eternal shine upon them.

It is fitting that a hymn should be raised unto Thee in Sion and a vow paid to Thee in Jerusalem. Give ear to my prayer, O Lord; unto Thee all flesh shall come at last

Grand them eternal rest, e c.

KYRIE (F ll Ch i )

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy Lord, have mercy

COLLECT (Celeb a )

V. May the Lord be with you.

R And with Thy spirit

TRACTUS

Absolve, Domine, animas omnium fidelium defunctorum ab omni vinculo delictorum.

V Let us pray: O God, whose property is ever to have mercy and to forgive, we beseech Thee on behalf of the soul of Thy servant, the Empress Maria, whom Thou hast this day called out of this world, that Thou wouldst not deliver her into the hands of the enemy, nor forget her forever, but command that she be taken up by Thy holy angels are borne to our home in paradise, that having put her hope and trust in Thee, she may not undergo the pains of hell, but may experience the joys of eternal life

Though our Lord Jesus Christ.

R Amen

EPISTLE (Deac )

V. A reading from the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians

Brethren: We will not have you be ignorant concerning them that are asleep, and not have you be sorrowful as others who have no hope; for if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, God will bring them that fall asleep in Jesus to Himself For this we say to you as the word of the Lord: we who are alive, who remain for the coming of the Lord, shall not prevent them who have slept.

For the Lord Himself with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, will descend from Heaven; and those who have died in Christ shall rise first Then we who are alive, who remain, shall be taken up with them to the clouds to meet Christ into the air, and be always with the Lord Wherefore comfort one another with these words

GRADUAL (F ll Ch i )

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may light eternal shine upon them

V. The just shall live in memory everlasting: and shall not be in fear of ill report

TRACT (Cha )

Absolve, O Lord, the souls of all the faithful departed from every bond of sin.

V Et gratia tua illis succurrenti mereantur evadere iuditium ultionis.

V Et lucis aeternae beatitudine perfrui

SEQUENTIA

Dies irae, dies illa, Solvet seclum in favilla: Teste David cum Sibylla.

Quantus tremor est futurus, Quando iudex est venturus, Cuncta stricte discursurus!

Tuba mirum spargens sonum

Per sepulchra regionum, Coget omnes ante thronum

Mors stupebit et natura, Cum resurget creatura, Iudicanti responsura

Liber scriptus proferetur, In quo totum continetur, Unde mundus iudicetur.

Iudex ergo cum sedebit, Quidquid latet apparebit: Nil inultum remanebit.

Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?

Quem patronum rogaturus?

Cum vix iustus sit securus

Rex tremendae maiestatis, Qui salvandos salvas gratis, Salva me, fons pietatis

Recordare Iesu pie, Quod sum causa tuae viae: Ne me perdas illa die.

Quaerens me, sedisti lassus: Redemisti crucem passus: Tantus labor non sit cassus.

Iuste iudex ultionis, Donum fac remissionis, Ante diem rationis

Ingemisco, tanquam reus:

V And by the help of Thy grace may they be enabled to escape the avenging judgement. V And enjoy the happiness of everlasting life

SEQUENCE (Cha )

This day, this day of wrath, shall consume the world in ashes as foretold by David and the Sibyl.

What trembling there shall be when the judge shall come to weigh all things with righteousness!

The trumpet, scattering its mighty sound across the graves of all lands, summons all before the throne

Death and nature shall be stunned when mankind arises to render account before the judge

The written book of prophecy in which all is contained shall be brought into the world to be judged.

When the judge takes his seat all that is hidden shall appear: nothing will remain unavenged.

What shall I, a wretch, say then? To which protector shall I appeal when even the just man is barely safe?

King of awful majesty, Who freely savest those worthy of salvation, save me, o fount of pity!

Remember, gentle Jesus, that I am the reason for Thy time on earth Do not cast me out on that day.

Seeking me, Thou didst sink down wearily, Thou hast saved me by enduring the cross, such a burden must not be in vain.

Righteous judge of vengeance, grant Thy gift of absolution before the day of reckoning

I groan, like the sinner that I am,

Culpa rubet vultus meus: Supplicanti parce Deus.

Qui Mariam absolvisti, Et latronem exaudisti: Mihi quoque spem dedisti.

Preces meae non sunt dignae: Sed tu bonus fac begnine, Ne perenni cremer igne

Inter oves locum praesta, Et ab haedis me sequestra, Statuens in parte dextra

Confutatis maledictis, Flammis acribus addictis

Voca me cum benedictis.

Oro supplex et acclinis, Cor contritum quasi cinis: Gere curam mei finis.

Lacrimosa dies illa, Qua resurget ex favilla

Iudicandus homo reus: Huis ergo parce Deus

P ie Iesu Domine, Dona eis requiem Amen

EVANGELIUM

V Dominus vobiscum

R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

V Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum

Ioannem

R Gloria tibi Dominie

V. In illo tempore, dixit Martha ad Iesum: Domine, si fuisses hic, frater meus non fuisset mortuus, sed et nunc scio quia quecumque poposceris a Deo, dabit tibi Deus Dicit illi Iesus: Resurget frater tuus. Dicit ei Martha: Scio quia resurget in resurrectione in novissimo die Dixit ei Ieus: Ego sum resurrectio et vita; qui credit in me, etiam si mortuus fuerit, vivet; et omnis qui vivit credit in me, non morietur in aeternum. Credis hoc?

Ait illi: Utique, Domine, ego

guilt reddens my face, Dear God, spare the supplicant!

Thou, who pardoned Mary and heeded the thief, hast given me hope as well.

Though my prayers are not worthy of Thee, grant that through your good grace I may not be consumed in eternal fire

Give me a place among the sheep And separate me from the goats. Let me stand at Thy right hand

When the damned are cast away and consigned to the searing flames, call me to be with the blessed.

Bowed down in supplication I beg Thee: my heart as though ground to ashes, Help me in my final hour.

O this day full of tears, when from the ashes arises

a guilty man to be judged: O Lord, have mercy upon him!

Gentle Lord Jesus, grant them eternal rest Amen

GOSPEL (Celeb a )

V A passage of the holy Gospel according to John

R Glory be to thee, O Lord!

V. At that time, Martha said to Jesus: Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died: but also I know that whatsoever Thou wilt ask of God, God will give it Thee Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again Martha saith to Him: I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this? Said she: Yes, Lord, I have
