This is my 1000th StarWatch, and I believe that a little history behind the column is in order. StarWatch began in 1996 when Allentown’s Morning Call approached the Lehigh Valley Amateur Astronomical Society and asked for someone to write a weekly column. No one responded. I was contacted by the club’s webmaster, Adam Jones, a former student of mine, who suggested that I might use the column to provide publicity for the Allentown School District Planetarium which I directed and which District officials were trying to close. This was the spark that ignited the column. I had already fought off four attempts to end the program, but the public had always rallied to my support. One of the compromises which kept the ASD Planetarium operational was my raising of the yearly capital to cover expenses, about $10,000 per annum. It was difficult convincing the MC that they should bond with the Planetarium; but when I submitted 30 weeks worth of articles, they relaxed and the column began appearing daily in their Weather Section. Several years later, StarWatch was picked up by Accessweather.com, Inc. and began appearing in several dozen weekly newspapers scattered across the country. The liaison with the Morning Call was the most important factor which kept the ASD Planetarium running up through my retirement in 2010. When the MC ended its involvement in 2007, my contributions dropped by nearly 50 percent. The inside story from the MC’s side was that I was being paid too much, but I had never received a dime of compensation, not even from The Accessweather folks who still continue to use the column. The real fun has been sending it into the Moravian College community where I am currently teaching astronomy, a local connection once again. How many more StarWatch articles does the future hold? One thousand was my goal back in ‘96, but I have no present reason to quit. My sincere thanks to everyone reading StarWatch! www.astronomy.org

This year, the iconic Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign will celebrate its 65th anniversary by joining forces with another American favorite, Peanuts, which is also turning 65 this year.

What are a few of the truly remarkable adoption stories on record?

Those involving animals “adopting” humans, usually wolves or wild dogs rearing children, says Deirdre Barrett in “Supernormal Stimuli.” There have also been cases of bears, monkeys, chimpanzees and panthers doing likewise. In 1996, Bello, a two-year-old Nigerian boy, was found after being abandoned at age six months and spending a year and half with chimpanzees. “He walked by bending his legs and dragging his arms on the ground and leaped about throwing objects. So far, he has learned some human language and social behavior but still makes chimpanzee noises amid his speech.” John Ssebunya, abandoned as a two-year-old in the jungle of Uganda, was adopted by a colony of African green ververt monkeys for three years. In 1991, when a tribe took the naked boy to an orphanage, he was more adept at climbing trees than walking and chattered like the monkeys; more recently, he has picked up some human language and now enjoys singing in a church choir. One of the best documented early cases was in 1920 when Kamala, age eight, and Amala, 18 months, were discovered in a wolves’ den in India. Both walked on all fours, ate only raw meat and kept nocturnal hours. Amala died after a year without learning any human language or gait; Kamala lived eight years, picked up a few words and learned to walk upright, though she reverted to all fours when in a hurry. When human children are found living among animals, their “foster parents” invariably try to prevent their removal. The monkeys harboring John Ssebunya bombarded villagers with sticks and stones; the wolf pack defended Kamala and Amala so fiercely that the adoptive mother had to be shot. “Reading these cases,” says Barrett, “it’s not at all clear that people have done these children a favor by returning them to human society to which they never adjust completely.”

(Family Features) The weather is getting cooler, but that doesn’t mean grilling season has to burn out.

In fact, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association, 60 percent of grillers are now cooking outdoors year-round, so fall grilling season is just heating up.

With the new season come new opportunities to fire up the grill, from tailgating at football games to harvest parties around bonfires. Burgers remain one of the most popular foods to grill, so there’s no better time to perfect your burger grilling skills with these tips from Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet grill master Russ Faulk: The beef: The first step to the perfect burger is selecting the right beef. To get the right balance of texture, flavor and juiciness, go with an 85 percent lean mixture. Ground beef from the butcher’s case is recommended over pre-packaged options.

For the freshest flavor, avoid ground beef with any signs of gray or brown color. Always check the underside of the meat before purchasing.

The patties: Form 1/3-pound to 1/2-pound patties, making them about three-fourths of an inch thick and roughly three-fourths of an inch larger in diameter than the buns.

Dimple the middle of each patty so it’s thinner in the center than at the edges. The indent will rise up and flatten out when grilled.

Finally, brush the patties with olive oil and season with salt – both will help in creating a browned exterior crust.

Prepping the grill: Heat up two temperature zones: one hot fire at 600 degrees for the burgers and another 400-degree area for toasting the buns.

The dry heat of a charcoal fire delivers the best crust on the outside of the burger. Gas fire also works, if it’s hot enough. Certain grills, such as the Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet Hybrid Fire Grill, allow for cooking with any combination of gas, charcoal or wood.

The grilling: Place the burgers over the hottest part of the grill for about four minutes. Add slices of red onions to the grill to caramelize them at this time.

Flip the burgers and cook for another four minutes.

Add cheese to the top of the patties and place the

onions on top of the burger.

When the burgers are almost done, lightly toast the buns directly on the cooler zone of the grill grate or on the warming rack for about 20-30 seconds.

Remove everything from the grill, and assemble your burgers.

Liberty Burgers • Servings: 8 4 pounds choice ground round, 85 percent lean, formed into 8 hamburger patties Extra virgin olive oil Finely-ground sea salt 8 Italian rolls, split 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced 1 poblano pepper, thinly sliced (or green bell pepper) 1 banana pepper, thinly sliced 1 Vidalia onion, thinly sliced 8 slices provolone cheese Prepare grill for direct grilling with two temperature zones: one medium-low and one medium-high. Preheat 12-inch cast iron skillet over hottest part of fire.

Brush hamburger patties all over with olive oil and liberally season with sea salt. Lightly brush insides of rolls with olive oil and lightly season with sea salt.

Toss peppers and onion with about 1 tablespoon olive oil.

Grill burgers over hot zone of fire, turning once, about 4 minutes per side.

Toast rolls over cooler zone of fire during second half of burger cooking.

Transfer cooked burgers to platter, top each with slice of cheese, and cover with foil to rest and to melt cheese.

Remove toasted rolls from fire and reserve.

Cook peppers and onions in hot skillet, tossing frequently until nicely browned, about 5 minutes.

Top each burger with peppers and onions, transfer to rolls and serve.

In 12-inch skillet over medium heat, melt 1tablespoon butter. Dip bread into milk mixture, letting each side soak for 30 seconds. Add butter to skillet. Over medium heat, cook bread until golden, about 4 minutes on each side. Repeat with remaining butter and bread.

Dust with confectioners’ sugar. Serve with warm maple syrup.

Candy Corn Pudding Prep Time: 15 minutes Servings: 2 2 1 1/2

cups TruMoo Orange Scream milk box (3.56-ounces) instant white chocolate pudding red and yellow food coloring cup whipped cream

In large bowl, beat milk and instant pudding with wire whisk or mixer until thickened. Spoon 1/2 of mixture into bowl. Tint with food coloring to dark orange shade.

To serve, spoon 1/2 of original color pudding (light orange) into 2 tall dessert glasses. Layer with dark orange pudding. Top each with whipped cream.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

October is Billiard Awareness Month.

Many cues are made in two pieces that are screwed together before using for play.

The top of the cue is called the stroke and the bottom is called the butt.

Carom is a pool game using only one white ball, one yellow ball, and one red ball.

There are no holes in a Carom table.

The average cue stick weighs 19.5 ounces.

The first coin-operated billiard table was patented in 1903. It cost one penny to play.

Billiard balls used to be made out of ivory. The average tusk only yielded three to four balls, as they had to be cut from the center of a tusk. Today, billiard balls are made of celluloid and other plastics.

The term “scratch,” as applied to a pocketing of the cue ball, was derived from the penalty assessed for such a foul. In pool’s early days, the score was often kept on a chalkboard. When a player pocketed the cue ball, his opponent “scratched” a point off the shooter’s score.

Throughout most of the 1800’s, the chalk used on the leather cue tips was carbonate of lime, the same as blackboard chalk. Today, most chalk is comprised of fine abrasives and does not contain any chalk at all.

The ferrule is a small sleeve at the end of a pool cue that the tip is adhered to. It is used to prevent the end of your cue from splitting and also provides a solid, stable point to which the tip can be fastened.
