The GEF is a leading public funding source for the transfer of environmentally sound technologies (ESTs) to address climate change, having supported technology transfer activities in 168 developing and transition countries. GEF current project portfolio, upon completion, is expected to mitigate more than 2 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2 eq) emissions directly and about 7 billion tonnes of CO2 eq emissions indirectly. That total—about 9 billion tonnes—equals more than twice the amount of total CO2 eq emitted annually by the European Union in the recent years.
These GEF-supported efforts have generated a wealth of knowledge and lessons learned on technology transfer, setting the stage for these proven ideas to be adopted on a much wider scale.
