A Note from the Assistant Editor Lucia Anaya

If you’re reading this, it means you survived the apocalypse, or better yet, there wasn’t one to begin with. Many took the end of the Mayan calendar as a prophecy that the world would end on Dec. 21, 2012, but seeing as we’re still alive, what does the calendar’s conclusion truly mean? To help answer the question, a group of artists came together to premiere their exhibit “Ultimo B’ak’tun.” Turn to p. 16 to find out more about its significance.

Also, there are a couple of Chicago high school basketball players that are showcasing some of the best skills in the nation this year. Check out who they are and also where you can check out your own neighborhood high school basketball team play on p. 19.

As we wrap up the year, we want to thank you for your continued support of The Gate newspaper. We have many plans for the New Year and hope that you come along for the ride. We wish all of you Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year.

The Gate It is no longer illegal to carry concealed weapons in Illinois.

The U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the concealed carry ban on Dec. 11, ruling the law was unconstitutional.

“Illinois had to provide us with more than merely a rational basis for believing that its uniquely sweeping ban is justified by an increase in public safety. It has failed to meet this burden,” wrote Judge Richard Posner in the court’s majority opinion.

Prior to ruling, Illinois remained the only state in the country without a concealed carry law. Advocates, such as the NRA, who lobbied to lift the ban, argued the illegality of carrying concealed weapons violated their Second Amendment—the right to bear arms.

Lee Goodman of the Stop Concealed Carry Coalition, a group that advocated against the reversal of the ban, said the coalition would attempt to appeal the court’s decision.

“The court made a mistake and we’re asking Attorney General Lisa Madigan to appeal the decision to the United States Supreme Court,” he said.

The 2-1 decision gives state lawmakers 180 days to come up with their own version of the concealed carry law “that will impose reasonable limitations, consistent with the public safety and the Second Amendment,” wrote Posner.

El Tribunal de Apelaciones del Séptimo Circuito de EE.UU. anuló la prohibición de portación de armas ocultas el pasado 11 de diciembre, declarando la ley inconstitucional.

“Illinois tenía que proporcionarnos más que una simple base racional para creer que su singular prohibición total es justificada por un aumento en la seguridad pública. No logró cumplir con su parte”, dijo el Juez Richard Posner en la opinión mayoritaria del tribunal.

Previo al dictamen, Illinois permanecía como el único estado del país sin una ley de portación de armas ocultas. Defensores, como la NRA, que presionaron para levantar la prohibición, argumentaban que la ilegalidad de portar armas ocultas violaba su Segunda Enmienda Constitucional—el derecho a portar armas.

Lee Goodman de la Coalición Stop Concealed Carry, un grupo que abogó en contra de la revocación de la prohibición dijo que la coalición intentaría apelar la decisión del tribunal.

“El tribunal cometió un error y le pedimos a la Fiscal General Lisa Madigan que apele la decisión ante el Tribunal Supremo”, dijo.

La decisión de 2-1 le da a los legisladores estatales 180 días para presentar su propia versión de la ley de portación de armas ocultas “que imponga limitaciones racionales, consistentes con la seguridad pública y la Segunda Enmienda”, escribió Posner.

The grid garbage collection system was implemented in the city’s Southwest Side.

On Dec. 10, approximately 56,000 households in wards 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22 and 23 transitioned from a ward-based collection system to a grid-based system that follows main streets and natural boundaries.

In a press conference on Dec. 6, aldermen voiced their support for the change.

“Instead of garbage trucks having to navigate peculiar lines of ward boundaries, which some have likened to the jagged-edge outline of a dragon’s tail, these pickups will follow a much more linear and efficient course,” said 14th Ward Ald. Edward Burke.

This “linear and efficient course” allows the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation to provide residents with high quality garbage collection while reducing manpower and costs, said Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Charles Williams.

The new system allows smaller groups of garbage pick-up crews to serve more areas of the city, attempting to create more balanced service regions. The extra crew members will

be directed to other areas of Streets and Sanitation, such as street control and graffiti removal.

Williams said residents will only see one change from the transition—the day of the week the garbage is collected.

The grid garbage collection system has already been implemented in approximately 300,000 households throughout the city, although some residents have experienced confusion by the change.

In early November, when the system was implemented in 115,000 homes on the North, West and Southwest Sides, some residents were caught off–guard, unaware their garbage collection day had changed.

Ald. Burke said he hoped publicizing the new system would help the public be informed and not surprised by the change.

Williams said that despite the glitches, the system is working well.

“Overall, it’s much more efficient, a much better manner to collect refuse,” he said.

Contract negotiations continue at Alivio Medical Center after workers went on a six-day strike earlier this month.

Workers said they are unhappy with a contract proposal that would cap wages and increase the employee health insurance cost.

Currently, the health insurance cost for the union is 17 percent for single, employee/spouse, and employee/child; and 14 percent for family, according to Anne Igoe of the Lead Collective Bargaining and Representation for the Service Employee International Union (SEIU) Healthcare Illinois and Indiana.

She said the union is hoping to ensure that its members cost goes up minimally.

Rocio Franco, a financial advisor for Alivio and union member with the SEIU Healthcare IL/IN, said the wage cap would affect many of the workers who are already close to reaching it.

“I started off at $8 an hour, I’m ma-

king $14.66 after 14 years of working there and they want to red circle me that if I continue to work there I wouldn’t get a raise ever again,” she said.

Workers returned to work after a sixday strike as the union and management seemed to make some headway in negotiations, but according to Franco, it is no longer looking that way.

“At this point it might take a little bit longer,” she said. “I don’t know how much longer but they want us to compromise so much [and] they want us to give in a lot and I just think it’s unfair.”

Alivio director Carmen Velasquez told WBEZ in an interview the clinic is struggling because the state of Illinois hasn’t reimbursed it $1.4 million for patient care but wants to reach an agreement with employees.

“We need to consider everything that is going to make and keep Alivio a financially viable organization,” she told WBEZ.

Las negociaciones de contrato continúan en el Centro Médico Alivio después de que los empleados estuvieran en huelga durante seis días a principios de este mes.

Los empleados dicen no estar contentos con la propuesta de contrato que fijaría un tope salarial e incrementaría el costo del seguro de salud para los empleados.

En la actualidad, el costo del seguro salud para el sindicato es de 17 por ciento para solteros, empleado/cónyuge, y empleado/hijo; y 14 por ciento para familias, según Anne Igoe de la Negociación Colectiva Principal y Representación de Healthcare Illinois e Indiana para el Sindicato Internacional de Empleados de Servicio (SEIU).

Dijo que el sindicato espera asegurar que el costo de sus miembros aumente por un mínimo.

La directora de Alivio Carmen Velasquez declaró a WBEZ en una entrevista que la clínica está sufriendo porque el estado de Illinois no le ha reembolsado $1.4 millones por cuidados al paciente pero quiere llegar a un acuerdo con los empleados.

“Necesitamos considerar todo lo que está pasando para hacer y mantener a Alivio como una organización financieramente viable”, dijo a WBEZ.

Puerto Rico’s Commonwealth Option Kept Off Ballot, Residents Protest

First, Puerto Ricans were asked whether they were satisfied with the current commonwealth status. Fifty-two percent said “no.” Then voters were given three options, to which the results were: 809,000 votes for statehood, 73,000 for independence, and 441,000 for sovereign free association.

The current commonwealth status was not among the options.

So as an act of protest, almost half million people left the second question blank, following a recommendation from the pro-commonwealth Popular Democratic Party.

When added to the math, blank ballots made the percentage of voters who backed statehood fall to 45 percent.

“Blank ballots are a legitimate form of political protest,” said Charles Venator, an expert in the U.S. territories and political science professor at University of Connecticut. “If we count the blank ballot options, statehood supporters did not garner the majority of votes, a fact that Mr. Pedro Pierluisi (Puerto Rico’s resident commissioner) is neglecting to disclose to Congress and the president.”

On Nov. 14, Pierluisi gave a forceful speech on the House floor defending both the process and the results of the Nov. 6 referendum. Pierluisi, who is pro-statehood, called the island’s current status “colonial in nature” and urged Congress not to dismiss the election’s outcome.

But Venator and others see a fundamental problem with the referendum results.

“Resident Commissioner Pierluisi’s position is misleading and outright unethical,” Venator insisted. “The plebiscite was orchestrated by the Statehood Party (Partido Nuevo Progresista) was designed to mislead the voter and to [foreclose] a democratic vote.”

Instead of following a straight vote on one of multiple elections, said Venator, the 2012 referendum offered two questions and four different status options, purposely excluding the current association with the U.S. “Please don’t get me wrong, I would love to see the Statehood Party demand statehood for Puerto Rico, sending two Democratic senators and reapportioning up to five Democratic representatives to a Republican-control-

led House,” Venator said. “However, Puerto Ricans need to be honest brokers in any negotiation.”

In 1998, on the 100th anniversary of the U.S. takeover of Puerto Rico from Spain, poet Martin Espada, an acclaimed professor at University of Massachusetts at Amherst, wrote a compelling article arguing that after 500 years of Spanish and American rule, Puerto Rico still deserves independence.

“The colonial relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico has not fundamentally changed since that time,” Espada wrote. “The island remains a political anachronism, a throwback to the age of gunboat diplomacy and the handlebar mustache.”

The daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants, Ilana Cohn-Gomez was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wis., but her family has kept close cultural ties with the island, hence her opinion on what the island should pursue.

“In a perfect world, I would love to see Puerto Rico have its independence,” she said. “It doesn’t necessarily have to rely on U.S. commerce; it has substantial relationships with its surrounding countries.”

Cohn-Gomez said she believes Puerto Ricans have been given certain opportunities from the U.S., but “who is to say they couldn’t have created their own opportunities? Puerto Ricans in general are a hard working people.”

As for Puerto Rico’s woes - $68 billion in deficit and unemployment touching 14 percent, the fault seems to rest on the U.S. side.

“The United States is certainly the most responsible party in the island’s sociopolitical circumstances,” said Lilia Fernandez, professor at Ohio State University and author of “Brown in the Windy City: Mexicans and Puerto Ricans in Postwar Chicago.” “As the colonial power that controls and administers Puerto Rico as a colonial possession, the U.S. by large directs domestic economic policy, trade policies, local infrastructure funding, the social safety net, etc.

“Rather than blaming the island’s residents as ‘culturally deficient’ or arguing that some type of collective moral failure among residents explains the island’s cir-

cumstances, we have to look at its long history of colonization to understand the dynamics today,” Fernandez said. “And of course, the global economic crisis that has affected nations everywhere has had an impact on the island as well.”

The referendum results - the first time statehood won a majority of votes - could still be put forth, but political analysts have said they can hardly see Congress and President Obama pushing for a confirmation of the plebiscite with such ingrained lack of consensus.

Additionally, on Nov. 6 the people of Puerto Rico voted to oust Gov. Luis Fortuna, a member of the Pro-

Statehood Party, along with other pro-statehood leaders, signifying a big blow to the movement.

But some expect things could still turn around in the future.

The thought of spending his retirement years by the ocean led Bartolomei to spend most of his life savings in his property in Vieques. By the time he actually retires, he hopes Puerto Rico is already fully incorporated into American society.

“For the sake of the economic well-being of its citizens, better employment rates, civil rights and such,” he said.

Cuando se calcularon los números las boletas en blanco estas hicieron que el porcentaje de electores que respaldaban la estadidad callera a 45 por ciento.

“Las boletas en blanco son una forma legítima de protesta política”, dijo Charles Venator, profesor experto en territorios estadounidenses y en ciencia política de la Universidad de Connecticut. “Si contamos las opciones de las boletas en blanco, los partidarios de la estadidad no obtuvieron la mayoría de los votos, un hecho que el Sr. Pedro Pierluisi (el residente comisionado de Puerto Rico) no ha revelado al Congreso o al presidente.

El 14 de noviembre, Pierluisi dio un discurso forzado en la Cámara defendiendo el proceso y los resultados del referendo del 6 de noviembre. Pierluisi, que es proestadidad, llamó el actual estado de la isla “colonial por naturaleza” y pidió al Congreso que no descartara el re-

sultado de la elección.

Pero Venator y otros ven un problema fundamental con los resultados del referendo.

“La posición del comisionado residente Pierluisi es errónea y completamente inmoral”, insistió Venator.

“El plebiscito fue organizado por el Partido Estadista (el Partido Nuevo Progresista), fue diseñado para confundir al elector y para ejecutar el voto demócrata.

En lugar de seguir un voto directo en una de múltiples elecciones, dijo Venator, el referendo del 2012 ofreció dos preguntas y cuatro distintas opciones de estado, excluyendo deliberadamente la actual asociación con los EE.UU. “Por favor no me malinterpreten, me encantaría ver que el Partido Estadista demande la estadidad para Puerto Rico, enviando a dos senadores Demócratas y reasignando hasta cinco representantes Republicanos a una Cámara de control Republicano”, dijo Venator. “Sin embargo, los puertorriqueños necesitan ser agentes honestos en cualquier negociación”.

Hija de inmigrantes puertorriqueños, Ilana CohnGómez nació y creció en Milwaukee, Wis., pero su familia ha mantenido estrechos lasos culturales con la isla, por lo tanto, su opinión acerca de lo que la isla debe buscar.

“En un mundo perfecto, me gustaría ver que Puerto Rico tuviera su independencia”, dijo. “No necesariamente tiene que depender del comercio de EE.UU; tiene relaciones substanciales con sus países circunvecinos”.

Cohn-Gómez dijo que cree que a los puertorriqueños se les han dado ciertas oportunidades de EE.UU., pero “¿quién dice que no pudieron haber creado sus propias oportunidades? Los puertorriqueños en general son personas trabajadoras”.

En cuanto a los problemas de Puerto Rico--$68 millones de déficit y un desempleo que llega al 14 por ciento, el fallo parece estar en el lado de EE.UU. “Estados Unidos es sin duda la parte más responsable de las circunstancias sociopolíticas de la isla”, dijo Lilia Fernández, profesora de la Universidad Ohio State y Autora de “Brown in the Windy City: Mexicans and Puerto Ricans in Post War Chicago”. “Como el poder colonial que controla y administra a Puerto Rico como posesión colonial, EE.UU. en gran parte dirige la política económica interna, las políticas de comercio, la financiación de la infraestructura local, la red de seguridad

social, etc.

“En lugar de culpar a los residentes de la isla como ‘culturalmente deficientes’ o argumentar que algún tipo de falla moral colectiva entre los residentes explique las circunstancias de la isla, tenemos que estudiar su larga historia de colonización para entender las dinámicas hoy”, dijo Fernández. “Y por supuesto, la crisis económica mundial que ha afectado a los países en todas partes ha tenido un impacto en la isla también”.

Los resultados del referendo--la primera vez que la estadidad ha obtenido una mayoría de votos-podría ser propuesta, pero los analistas políticos han dicho que difícilmente pueden ver al Congreso y al Presidente Obama presionar por una confirmación del plebiscito con tal falta arraigada de consenso.

Además, el 6 de noviembre, la gente de Puerto Rico votó para destituir al Gobernador Luis Fortuna, miembro del Partido Pro-Estado, junto con otros líderes proestado, resultando en un gran golpe al movimiento.

Pero algunas cosas aún podrían dar un giro en el futuro.

La idea de pasar sus años de retiro cerca del océano llevó a Bartolomei a gastar la mayor parte de sus ahorros en su propiedad en Vieques. Para cuando se retire, espera que Puerto Rico ya esté totalmente incorporado a la sociedad estadounidense.

“Por el bien del bienestar de sus ciudadanos, mejores índices de empleo, derechos civiles y tales”, dijo.

New businesses are opening up in the Back of the Yards, neighborhood, including restaurants.

The Back of the Yards community has long been a destination for great food. The neighborhood boasts some of the best small Mexican restaurants in the city and as the community continues to grow economically, more culinary entrepreneurs and national chains are finding Back of the Yards to be a great place to open new restaurants. Below are a few new additions to the local dining scene.

Cafeteria Yesenia, 4244 S Ashland Ave., 773-523-8480 Cafeteria Yesenia opened in August 2012 and is the first Cuban restaurant in the Back of the Yards. Cafeteria Yesenia opens at 5 a.m., so those who crave a café Cubano, the delightfully thick and sweet espresso, can line up early to get their daily dose. The restaurant features famous Cuban pressed sandwiches such as

the Cubano, the Medianoche, and the Carne Asada. These come hot off the grill and will satisfy the most ravenous appetite. The counter service is always prompt and friendly, and the restaurant has a very relaxed environment that encourages diners to linger for one more cup of coffee.

Via Mexicana, 4553 S Ashland Ave., 773-376-5480 Via Mexicana is a unique new addition to the local restaurant scene. Open for about a month, this beautiful, stylish restaurant features both Mexican and Italian food. Diners can enjoy traditional Mexican dishes such as enchiladas, pechuga de pollo, and chuletas de puerco. Via Mexicana also serves familiar Italian cuisine such as spaghetti al pomodoro and linguine frutti di mare. For adventurous

diners, there are the House Specialties which are a fusion of Mexican and Italian flavors.

Dishes such as Chicken Milanesa and Tilapia Fillet feature a combination of Mexican and Italian influences to tempt the palate of even the most discriminating diner.

Famous for its fast delivery, Domino’s features several varieties of pizza, pasta, hot sandwiches, and chicken wings to satisfy empty stomachs. They also feature drinks and desserts for those with a sweet tooth.

Birrieria y Taqueria Arandas, 1812 W 47th St., 773- 376-9770 Not a new restaurant, Birrieria Arrandas

has moved from its previous location at 1738 W. 47th St. to 1812 W 47th St. Arrandas still features traditional Mexican fare such as tacos al vapor, tacos al carbon, and special plates.

Pay them a visit in their new, spacious location and enjoy traditional food with old friends.

Coming Soon Vista Hermosa, 4248 S. Ashland Ave. Vista Hermosa plans to open in the next month. This traditional Mexican restaurant replaces Barbacoa El Perico that previously occupied that same address.

SSAs Complete Major 2012 Projects, More to Come in 2013

New sidewalks have been installed at locations that previously did not have walkways in the Stockyards as part of SSA #13’s major beautification projects.

By Mike McMullin In 2012, several projects designed to attract and retain local businesses have been completed in the four Special Service Areas (SSAs) managed by the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council (BYNC). The SSAs, which are areas designated by the city of Chicago, are an economic tool that provide special services to businesses in addition to regular city services.

To date, there are 44 active SSAs in the city.

In SSA #7, the Kedzie Industrial Tract, major clean-up projects were undertaken in 2012.

Partnering with the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program (SWAP), the entire area was cleared of debris, which greatly reduces instances of flooding and rodent infestation. In 2013, the BYNC maintenance crew has been budgeted to perform regular clean-up of the area.

SSA #10, the Back of the Yards retail district, has partnered with Detour Community Maps to provide a comprehensive map that features local retail businesses, community calendar events and community public services, along with a section that focuses on areas of entertainment, recreation and other local activities.

The map is designed to promote businesses to consumers in need of their specific product and services, ultimately increasing sales for the

local small businesses.

In SSA #13, the Stockyards Industrial Park, major beautification projects have been completed at two primary entrances to the area, 47th Street and Racine Avenue, and Pershing Road and Morgan Street.

New sidewalks have been installed at locations that previously did not have walkways, greatly increasing pedestrian safety in the heavy-traffic area. Also, weathered light poles lining the perimeter of the Industrial Park were painted black to make them more attractive.

In 2013, SSA #13 plans to provide Wi-Fi internet to all Stockyards businesses, which will increase efficiency and improve business operations.

SSA #39, Brighton Park/Archer Heights, has completed the planning phase for major façade reconstructions at five retail businesses.

The reconstructions are scheduled for completion in 2013. Also, in 2012, over 1,000 cases of acid etching and graffiti were resolved by the SSA. For more information about the SSA program please contact the BYNC at 773-5234416.

This year’s Shop With A Cop event was successful in bringing students, parents and principals from eight different schools together with the officers of the 9th District.

The Art of Making Piñatas

Create Your Own Piñata at Home Materials:

Newspaper, Cornstarch, White craft glue, Colored tissue paper, Water, Scissors, Card stock or other thick paper for points

Universidad Popular, a community organization in Little Village hosted a piñata workshop on Dec. 3 and Dec. 10, 2012.

I should start off by declaring that I’m not a crafty person.

My attempts at making anything by hand, whether a friendship bracelet or even something as simple as a paper snowflake have always been futile, ending in bitter frustration, agony and defeat.

Let’s just say patience and attention to detail are not my forte.

So, you can imagine my apprehension when the task to make piñatas was given to me by my editor. “It would be a great article,” she said. I didn’t share her enthusiasm.

Despite my hesitation, I arrived promptly at Universidad Popular, a community organization in Little Village that was offering the piñata workshops. On arrival, I learned that I was already behind in the piñata-making process, having missed the first lesson the week before.

Ray Arroyo, an English facilitator for Universidad Popular and the organizer behind the workshop, assured me there was still plenty for me to learn, so I rolled up my sleeves and picked up a balloon, which already had been shelled with a dried mix of recycled newspaper, corn starch and water (the first step in the process).

Unlike me, Arroyo is quite avid in all

things hand-crafted. He has several residencies as a teaching artist in various neighborhood schools around the city, and learned the art of piñata making from his mother, Veronica Arroyo, who was also present.

Veronica, a petite and patient woman, made and sold piñatas to her coworkers for years, and made emphasis on the tradition when celebrating her children’s birthdays.

“Making piñatas is much better and more affordable than buying the cardboard ones sold at the store,” she said.

The piñatas we created that day were for Universidad Popular’s holiday party, taking place that Saturday. We were making traditional star-shaped piñatas, commonly used during Las Posadas – a nine-day holiday celebration that represents the nine months Mary carried Jesus in her womb.

Growing up, my mother often described the posadas she celebrated when she lived in Mexico. She said the celebration was full of color, bags of treats and piñatas, lots and lots of piñatas.

While I decorated the piñatas with colorful strips of paper and mingled with other people doing the same thing, I wondered if this was somewhat close to what my mother described.

Arroyo said that to him, the workshop was more than just an exercise in art making. “It’s a way to bond and engage kids in something other than television. They learn the origin of the piñata, which teaches them a little bit more about their culture,” he said.

He was right. While I hunched over, hands full of glue from pasting each piece of tissue paper to a paper cone, I talked to several of the women there who reminisced of their time in Mexico. They described their own Christmas celebrations as children and their own version of making the best piñatas.

Their excitement traveled across the room as they moved from table to table, helping each other complete the piñatas.

I had arrived at the workshop with a negative view of my artistic skills, yet these skills were far from the point of the workshop. It was meant to bring the community together. It was meant to teach me a little bit about my culture and pass on the knowledge.

At the end of the day, it wasn’t about how good the piñata looked, it was about creating something together.

Comenzaré por declarar que no soy una persona hábil con las manualidades.

Mis intentos de confeccionar algo a mano, ya fuera un brazalete de amistad o inclusive algo tan simple como un copo de nieve en papel siempre han sido fallidos, terminando en amarga frustración, agonía y derrota.

Digamos que la paciencia y la atención al detalle no son mi fuerte.

Así que te podrás imaginar mi aprensión cuando la tarea de hacer piñatas me fue asignada por mi editora. “Sería un gran artículo”, dijo, pero no compartía su entusiasmo.

A pesar de mi vacilación, llegué temprano a Universidad Popular, una organización comunitaria en La

Villita que estaba ofreciendo los talleres de piñatas. Al llegar, me enteré de que ya estaba atrasada en el proceso de confección de la piñata, habiéndome perdido de la primera lección la semana anterior.

Ray Arroyo, un facilitador de inglés para Universidad Popular y el organizador detrás del taller, me aseguró que todavía me quedaba bastante tiempo para aprender, así que me doblé las mangas y tomé un globo, que ya había sido cubierto con una combinación seca de periódico reciclado, maicena y agua (el primer paso del proceso).

Periódico, Globos, Maicena, Pegamento blanco, Papel de china de colores, Agua, Tijeras Cartulina o cualquier otro papel grueso para las puntas

Bring three quarts of water to a boil.

Pon tres litros de agua a hervir.

On a separate container, mix the cornstarch with cold water until all the lumps are gone. While stirring, add cornstarch and water mixture to boiling water and allow to thicken to pudding consistency.

Allow to cool enough to handle comfortably.

Crea Tu Propia Piñata en Casa

Inflate a balloon and tie a knot Tear off thin strips 2x3 inches of newspaper and dip in the paste and onto the balloon, working top to bottom.

Make sure to cover entire surface of the balloon and smooth out the excess paste to create a nice thick layer.

Repeat 3-5 times. Allow to dry for a few days until very hard.

Cut balloon knot and cut a 3-inch opening at top of balloon shell.

Using card stock or poster board, roll cones about 12 inches long and cut tabs around the base.

Use white glue to fix the points to the balloon shape. Repeat as many times as desired.

Cut sheets of tissue paper into twoinch wide ribbons. Then cut fringes from one edge to the middle so they look like combs or eye lashes.

Run a bead of glue down the side of the cone on the piñata and wrap the tip with a cut tissue ribbon working your way down to the base of the cone.

Alternate colors for different effects.

Cut out 2-inch round pieces of tissue and use them to cover the spaces in between cones.

Make thin strips of tissue for tassels to glue onto cone ends.

Cut two holes on top of piñata for twine.

piñatas en forma de estrella, que comúnmente se utilizan en las posadas—una celebración de nueve días que representa el periodo de los nueve meses que María cargó a Jesús en su vientre.

Al crecer, mi mamá con frecuencia describía las posadas que celebraba cuando vivía en México. Ella decía que estaban llenas de color, aguinaldos y piñatas, montones y montones de piñatas.

Mientras decoraba las piñatas con coloridas tiras de papel y convivía con las otras personas que estaban haciendo lo mismo, pensaba si esto se aproximaba a lo que mi mamá describía.

Arroyo dijo que para él el taller era más que un ejercicio de creación de arte. “Es una forma de unir y entretener a los niños en otra cosa además de la televisión. Aprendieron el origen de las piñatas lo cual les enseña un poco más acerca de su cultura”, dijo.

Él estaba en lo correcto. Mientras me inclinaba, con las manos llenas de pegamento después de pegar cada pedazo de papel de china a un cono de cartulina, hablé con varias de las mujeres que recordaban sus tiempos en México. Describieron sus propias celebraciones navideñas de niñas y su propia versión para confeccionar piñatas.

Su emoción recorría el lugar mientras se movían de mesa a mesa ayudándose entre sí a terminar las piñatas.

Había llegado al taller con un punto de vista negativo de mis habilidades artísticas, pero a la vez estas habilidades estaban muy lejos del punto del taller. Tenía como fin unir a la comunidad.

Tenía como fin enseñarme un poco acerca de mi cultura, y pasar el conocimiento.

Al final del día, no se trató de lo bien que se veía la piñata, se trató de crear algo juntos.

The Last B’ak’tun New art exhibit showcases the real meaning behind the end of the Mayan calendar

There have been many speculations about the end of the world—a zombie apocalypse, an asteroid crashing into earth— theories and misconceptions that led many to believe the world would end on Dec. 21, 2012.

Yet while many prepared for doom, a group of artists chose a different route, celebrating instead with the opening of the art exhibit “Último B’ak’tun.”

Revealed on Friday, Dec. 15 at Meztli Cultural Center in Pilsen, the exhibition features the work of 16 artists and their take on 13 B’ak’tun—the final b’ak’tun (a period equivalent to 144,000 days) in the Mayan calendar.

Contrary to popular belief that the end of the calendar indicated an apocalypse, curators Roy Villalobos and Hector Duarte wanted to represent its real significance.

“Everybody talks about the end of the world but the Mayan calendar is really an end of a cycle,” said Villalobos. “It’s about the energies, the earth, the movements of the sun, not about the end of the world.”

The exhibit was first shown on Dec. 1 as a counterpart to Sones de Mexico Ensemble’s performance at Mayne Stage in Rogers Park. Sones de Mexico asked Villalobos and Duarte to curate the exhibit in order to fit the theme of their performance—the celebration of a new beginning signified by the conclusion of the 13 B’ak’tun.

But on seeing the audience’s positive response to it, Villalobos and Duarte decided to extend the one-day exhibit and transfer it to Meztli. The transfer added three more artists and an opportunity for more people to experience the artwork, according to Villalobos.

“We wanted to create a special exhibition for Pilsen and we decided it would be great to have it at Meztli,” he said.

ber of the collective Pintoras Mexicanas, is among the artists participating in the exhibit. Her work, a brown and black toned painting, displays a Mayan woman whose hands are centered on the Mayan symbol of the 13 B’ak’tun. The words “ending,” “beginning,” “strength,” and “liberty” are written in Mayan around her.

“I wanted to show a tranquil woman who is confident of her ancestors’ heritage,” said Dominguez. “I see 13 B’ak’tun as the beginning of a new cycle. I like that because right now the world is so crazy, it needs renovation.”

Many of the works in the exhibition emphasize the Mayan culture, displaying portraits of the pre-Columbiancivilization, its symbols and language. The works, which range from paintings to mixed media and sculpture, are strikingly bold in color, all perpetuating their own takes on the end of the calendar.

“Every artist was free to take on their own interpretation of 13 B’ak’tun,” said Villalobos.

For Dominguez, the exhibit serves as a way to inform people about the Mayan culture.

“Many times people confuse the pre-Columbian and they see it in one block, that Mayan is the same as Aztec and other pre-Columbian civilizations, so I like that this exhibit makes a difference,” she said.

The exhibition is set to run for a month and includes work from Dominguez, Villalobos, Duarte, Alfonso “Piloto” Nieves, Diana Solis, Emmanuel White Eagle, Esperanza Gama, Jose Terrazas, Luis Montenegro, Mary Shumann, Mercedes Inez Martinez, Monserrat Alsina, Omar Magaña, Ricardo Gonzalez, Roberto Ferreyra and Veronica Martinez.

Han habido varias especulaciones acerca del fin del mundo—un apocalipsis de zombis, un asteroide que se estrella en la tierra—teorías e ideas equivocadas que llevaron a muchos a creer que el mundo se acabaría el 21 de diciembre del 2012.

Pero aunque muchos se prepararon para el fin, un grupo de artistas optaron por una ruta diferente, celebrando mejor con la inauguración de la exhibición de arte, “Último B’ak’tun”.

Revelada el viernes, 15 de diciembre en el Centro Cultural Meztli en Pilsen, la exhibición cuenta con las obras de 16 artistas y su interpretación del 13 B’ak’tun—el b’ak’tun final (un periodo equivalente a 144,000 días) en el calendario maya.

Contrario a la creencia popular de que el fin del ciclo indicaba un apocalipsis, los organizadores Roy Villalobos y Héctor Duarte querían presentar su verdadero significado.

Sones de México le pidió a Villalobos y a Duarte que montaran la exhibición para concordar con el tema de su presentación—la celebración de un nuevo comienzo representada por la conclusión del 13 B’ak’tun.

Pero al ver la respuesta positiva del público, Villalobos y Duarte decidieron extender la exhibición de 1 día y trasladarla a Meztli. El traslado añadió a tres artistas más y una oportunidad para que más personas presenciaran las obras de arte, según Villalobos.

“Queríamos crear una exhibición especial para Pilsen y decidimos que sería grandioso si la tuviéramos en Meztli”, dijo.

Prep Hoops Showcases Elite Chicago Basketball Chicago’s high school baskeball players among the top in the nation

Jabari Parker, a senior at Simeon High School, one of three Chicago high school seniors ranked in ESPN’s top 100 basketball players in the class of 2013.

High school basketball enthusiasts across the nation have their eyes on Chicago this winter as prep poops in the city gets underway.

Though high school basketball was almost canceled a few months ago due to the teachers’ strike, the season is on.

Jabari Parker and Jahlil Okafor are now well recognized across Chicago, and throughout the nation as college recruiter’s offices look to get a commitment from either young man. Parker, a senior at Simeon, is the number one high school basketball player in the region and state.

Parker is being recruited by the top coaches in college basketball, Tom Izzo from Michigan State and Mike Krzyzewski at Duke. Both have their eyes on the top player of the nation, including the universities of Florida, Stanford and Brigham Young.

Chicago currently has three seniors ranked in ESPN’s top 100 basketball players in the class of 2013. Parker, Kendrick Nunn from Simeon, and Billy Garrett Jr. who is currently carrying the Morgan Park team. They, along with a special Whitney Young team, are making Christmas come early for

prep hoop fans.

Jahlil Okafor, L.J. Peak and Paul White are all juniors at Whitney Young and have propelled the team to be competitive in a very good Chicago public league, gaining national recognition. All three Young players are ranked in ESPN’s top 60 basketball players for the class of 2014.

The talented Whitney Young trio along with Parker and Nunn at Simeon played an integral role during the recent Chicago Elite Classic at the UIC Pavilion. The Pavilion, which can’t buy a sell out crowd when UIC Flames basketball is hosting their games, was busting at the seams with prep hoop fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the future of basketball.

High school basketball teams from Maryland, Ohio, Utah, California and Georgia all flew in to go head to head with the best that Chicago has to offer.

Cliff Alexander is a 6’9” center that absolutely swallows anyone that drives up the lane against Curie. Alexander is the #8 ranked junior in the nation and he sure plays like it. Much like Garrett Jr. from Morgan Park, Alexander is carrying a Curie team into recognition. Alexander is also drawing interest

Parker, estudiante de último año en Simeon, es el jugador número uno de baloncesto en la región y el estado.

High school hoops is where players with talent get noticed. It is the starting point of what for many of them will be a fruitful college and most likely successful professional career.

Basketball fans in Chicago should feel lucky to witness the great play from these 16 and 17-year-olds.

No matter where you live there are high Schools all around Chicago that have gyms packed with young boys and girls polishing their game with hopes of becoming the next Derrick Rose or even Jabari Parker. Kelly, Farragut, Little Village Lawndale and Tilden High Schools all have talented players representing their schools.

They may not get their games shown on ESPN or gain national recognition as being the best teams in the nation but that doesn’t stop them from playing the game that they love. Support your local high school basketball teams, you never know, you may be cheering on the next NBA star.
