editorial

It’s summer time, time to relieve the stress that governed both fall and spring semesters and time to celebrate if you’re graduating… But it’s also the time to think of all the coming challenges; graduates are steps away from decisions that will mark the rest of their career life and students that didn’t do well have to re-think their academic strategies. It’s been quite a dynamic year full of activities and ups and downs that The Gate has lived along with its readers. Now enjoying your summer time is a must! And what’s better to be proud of than our annual festivals that will be taking place all over the country? The Gate gives you a glimpse in this issue on the main biggest summer festivals. And that’s definitely not all. You just need to go through the issue and make sure not to miss a page of it! One of the important matters to stop at is the featured reportage conducted with J.A.D (Jeunesse Anti-Drogues). This dangerous - and unfortunately “taboo” – phenomenon keeps circulating among the youth and through the media, but yet the reality of the situation looks very challenging… This syndrome is spreading dangerously within the youth, endangering not only their own future, but that of our society, of our community, of our nation! Social mobilization should be the mission of university students’ communities in the coming time. Being the supposedly most dynamic sector of society, youth need to be sensible towards such and other social and national issues. Awareness is never enough, action is needed…

Sports & Athletics

World Cup 2010: The Stadiums! Johannesburg will have two stadiums in the World Cup 2010 and also boasts the opening match, one semi final and the final match of the tournament. Soccer City is the jewel in South Africa’s crown, built in 1987 and with a capacity of 94,700 (excluding Media and VIP’s) it is sure to offer a great atmosphere for the lucky few that get tickets and hopefully as the stadium to be used for the first game, provide an excellent springboard for a magnificent tournament.

Soccer City

Ellis Park was constructed in 1982 as a modern, integrated stadium offering outstanding sight lines from every seat. The Stadium stands within a world class sporting precinct, barely 15 minutes’ walk from the Johannesburg City Centre, and offers outstanding office, security and medical features. For 2010, new upper tiers will be constructed behind each of the goals, at the north and south ends of the venue, increasing the net capacity by 10,149 seats to a total 60,000. Ellis Park will host one quarter final match.

For 2010, the upper tier will be extended around the stadium, an encircling roof will be constructed, new changing room facilities will be developed and new floodlights will be installed.

Since 2006, Cisco offered internship programs for around 100 Lebanese who were impressing in their performance as Mr. Akiki describes. Akiki adds that it would be a pleasure for Cisco to keep them but “they have to get back to Lebanon”. As Akiki explains, the goal of these programs is to make them capable of benefiting their country. “We received around 1,000 applicants, almost 500 of which have complete applications and out of which 27 are selected for the last batch this year. The advertising of the program happened through Amideast and the selection process takes place with complete transparency” explains Akiki. The program includes a 6-months professional training in the USA followed by an 11-month sponsored internship in a Lebanese company, getting trained and applying knowledge in several fields such as network engineering, IT, business, sales, marketing, education, management, HR and more…

“We cover everything in matter of costs. The program’s budget was of around 3.5 Million Dollars all in all, including costs of labs, desks, laptops, mentors and other expenses as well” says Akiki. This group of 27 Lebanese students will constitute the last batch of interns, by which the program will be completed. However, Akiki expresses Cisco’s willingness to continue offering this program if proper funding can be found.

Its role is essentially focused on awareness as well as on psychological, medical and social assistance. It operates through 32 offices in Lebanon and 7 offices abroad, while being the first organization to be allowed to operate within the European Union.

The hard battle The first impression given by Joe Hawwat, head of J.A.D is: “The problem is much bigger than J.A.D… We’re unfortunately failing the battle to limit the spreading dangers of drugs.” No matter how tragic that seems to be, J.A.D’s small office in Jbeil was “crowded” with youngsters, parents, friendly NGOs coming either to be served or to offer service. Hawat’s phone is always on alert receiving all kinds of calls from people concerned in a way or another with the issue… That still proves the amount of attachment to the cause that J.A.D keeps carrying no matter the hardships…

Challenges “We are unfortunately witnessing deliberate neglect from governmental authorities. Unfortunately also, we are receiving no aids whatsoever from the UNDCP (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) in Beirut. Besides, we keep witnessing some kinds of quarrel and corruption among many organizations that claim to operate in the anti-drugs field…” complains Hawwat openly.

Volunteering: tragic status

30

J.A.D is an organization that is 100% based on volunteering. As Hawwat explains, new teams of activists are formed in average every 3 years. “Youngsters are neglecting social activities. University students barely count 2-to-3 percent of the organization’s volunteers while they should be the avant-gardes in this battle” says Hawwat.

Here Hawwat stresses on the importance of social studies in universities. “Students abroad are usually obliged to perform social activities and serve for a graded minimum number of hours per week” he adds.

Universities “Some universities welcome us and offer us all kinds of facilities we need, while some other don’t even allow us in… What we wish from universities is that they assist in volunteering programs and impose on students to register social service hours and most importantly cooperate with us to spread awareness on drugs as universities are the most targeted places and communities for dealers” says Hawwat. With regard to the situation of drug use among youth and university students, Hawwat admits the situation can be classified as catastrophic but still the numbers being published are not accurate and do not represent the reality of things…

Current and Future Projects As Hawwat exposed, J.A.D is currently focused on lobbying for a regulatory law for alcohol, besides the lobbying against energy drinks with labels of drugs. On another hand, J.A.D is organizing “sports against drugs” and “parents against drugs” campaigns and activities, practically in all Arab countries. “The dream however remains to establish an official/public rehabilitation center in Lebanon” says Hawwat. “We don’t want that drug addicts remain to be placed with criminals only to leave detention carrying more dangerous effects and probably becoming dealers themselves instead!” he adds.

Featured Interview

Tania Awad Ghorra “I feel I can do something… and I started!”

Despite the annoying image that many keep because of her voice over the famous “you’re out of units” message they get on their mobile phones, Tania Awad Ghorra carries multitudes of talents and ambitions that hours failed to reveal in her conversation with The Gate University Students Magazine.

32

“39 and kicking” Having no problem at all in exposing her age, living effectively a very dynamic 20-year-old spirit, Tania Awad Ghorra has always been a famous figure in Lebanese Media. Media has been her field of study as she completed her DES in Journalism at the Paris II University. Tania is now a mother of three kids but yet insists: “I’m not a mom in the classical meaning of the word!” AUNOHR Her commitments to the better life of her society were not restricted to media. As we spoke of university days, Tania revealed to The Gate a one-of-its kind project, that is the foundation of AUNOHR, a recognized university for specialization in non-violence and HR. “73 students are currently enrolled for the offered programs from various Arab countries. To be eligible to enroll, you have to be a professional first of all. The Board of Trustees is composed by many worldwide renowned symbols of non-violence, such as the grandson of Ghandi and Patch Adams and many others as well. It’s a summer university that goes from July to August with a very intensive program going from 9 to 9 even on Saturdays. AUNOHR is affiliated to the Universite de Paix in Belgium. It’s a revolutionary accredited university with ng local and international support, which is maki nt viole from ng comi le attractive even to peop activism backgrounds. The program doesn’t des end with classes and seminars but also inclu of us famo most the ground commitments, which being the late Laique Pride and Civil Marriage campaigns that took place in Beirut” she explains. Non-violence “I feel I can do something and I started… I introduced conflict resolution in the school of my children and trying to create some dynamism to introduce it to all schools as well. It can all be learned through games that would make students feel they’re playing while reaching the desired goals. It makes of them better listeners and helps them express themselves better. After all a conflict is not a bad thing, what matters is how to solve it” she adds. The success story… Tania exposes her success story briefly to The Gate as follows: “I started my first steps in media while looking for a job before even going to university, and that was through my

voice. I had a chance around year 1990 at Radio Magic 102. Bassem Christo did my voice test back then. Around a month passed and I thought I failed it but yet they called me back and I was selected among 70 other girls. It was the beginning of my career. I started as a DJ and even participated in many championships as well. During university days, I started recording advertisements. I also joined the chorale and took vocalize sessions with the great Zaki Nassif. Then I did camera tests at ICN TV and apparently I was the only one accepted also. I worked as a news reporter as a first step into the TV world and the chain went on… I’m still in the TV field but my work is more focused behind the camera now.” Dynamism It’s definitely hard to be sitting with Tania Ghorra and yet not feeling the amount of energy, commitment and dynamism she carries and expresses for practically everything that surrounds her. “We live once” she says. “I’d rather burn my wings while trying to do everything I want rather than not doing anything; I feel like every day is a gift for me, a bonus.” she adds. “I do what I feel like doing. I worked as a news reporter, as a caricature presenter on TV, then at MTV I presented the weather forecasts for life 5 years. I did interviews with famous personalities like Sir Sean Connery and Paul Anka… I continued work as a freelancer with Al-Jazeera, ART, Orbit, had voice overs in three languages on advertisements, phone companies’ messages, airport messages, phone banking etc… for more than 21 years already, although the average is between 5 to 9 years at most! After all, voice affects a lot even if you don’t notice it.” Being famous “It’s nice to be famous. I would be lying if I say otherwise. The most important however is to know how to deal with people. I respect everyone. Even when it comes to professional media work, I never treat anyone with superiority. Everyone has to learn after all, just like I took time to learn myself as well” says Tania. We are creative and capable Tania believes that Lebanese talents are very creative and can actually compete with all the world. “We’re always witnessing new blood in the world of advertising. I’ve personally worked in ads that were done for companies in Syria, KSA, Egypt, Iran, UAE and more… I’m proud to be part of this creative world.

Salad Toppers A salad can be the perfect no-cook summer dinner, light, refreshing, and a perfect way to get your produce and lean protein. But if you top your salad with high-calorie items, it can go from lean to fattening in a hurry. High-calorie dressings, fried chicken strips, bacon, cheese, and croutons are among the biggest offenders. An ounce of croutons (142 calories, 6 grams fat), 3 strips of crumbled bacon (124 calories, 9 grams fat), half a cup of cheese (228 calories, 18 g fat), 3 crispy fried chicken strips (350 calories, 19 g fat) and a pouch of creamy Caesar dressing (260 calories, 26 g fat) and your salad weighs in at 1,129 calories and 78 g fat. Instead, top your greens with grilled chicken, strips of lean meat, or eggs, then pile on the veggies. Finish it off with a small amount of regular or low-fat cheese and a little light vinaigrette dressing for a light but filling summer salad.

Sweet or Salty Snacks A handful of any kind of snack won’t do much harm, but when you have your hand stuck in the bag or box all day long; it can really sabotage your diet. Each ounce of potato chips or cheese puffs is roughly 160 calories and 10 grams of fat. Try snacking on fruits, raw veggies with lite dip, or small portions of fat-free popcorn instead.

Fried Chicken A bucket of fried chicken is an easy way to feed a crowd, but it can wreak havoc on your waistline (and arteries), A 3.5 oz. skinned chicken breast has only 167 calories and 7 grams of fat, compared to a KFC fried chicken breast with 360 calories and 21 g fat “Marinate in a light dressing, use a dry spice rub, and top it with a fabulous fresh salsa and while it may not be crispy, it will be delicious and much better for you,”

Summer Food Safety!!! Food safety starts with proper food handling. That begins at the time of purchase and continues all the way to storing leftovers. When you get ready for outdoor events, remember the following: • • • • • •

Wash hands before, during and after handling food. Bring sanitizing gel or towelettes. Keep cold foods below 4.4 degrees celsius and hot foods above 60 degrees Celsius. Store cooked foods separate from raw foods. Don’t let perishables such as meat, fish, poultry and dairy foods sit out for more than one hour. Transport foods to the grill on one plate and off the grill on another plate. Store leftovers in tightly sealed containers.

Helping Others just do it! Psychology

Never mind selfish or selfless reasons,

By Sawsan Razzouk, Psychology psychology@thegate-me.com

Did you ever allow your friend to cheat off of your exam, all the while knowing you might get caught? Some people might say this is a selfless act, because they (and even you) may assume you’re gaining nothing when helping this friend copy some of your answers. Although that is a very possible scenario, the fact is that you may have gained your friend’s attention, appreciation and gratitude. Moreover, it can be quite an ego boost to know that you are needed and that you are able to complete a difficult test with no help. Did you ever give money to a beggar and put it down as a selfless act? Some people agree that it was purely an act of good will towards a fellow human being, especially if you did not have that much money to spare or if the beggar was particularly annoying or rude. Others may argue that you felt good after helping a fellow human being, specifically because you rose above your feelings or hesitation, leaving you with a sense of pride and achievement.

Did u know? You are more likely to help someone who is more similar to you than any other person in need? This can be explained by the evolutionary principle of kin selection—where you are prone to help an individual who is related to you, before someone who is not, in order to somehow preserve your genes.

42

There is a never-ending controversy regarding altruism, and whether such acts of concern towards the welfare of others are truly “selfless”. Some contest that these prosocial acts of almost always have an ulterior motive. But what does it really matter? At the end of the day, are you not helping someone? This topic is much debated in many disciplines such anthropology, sociology, neurobiology, genetics and social psychology to name a few. The latter proposes several theories regarding the behavior of helping others. Disputing this under the light of the comprehensive, social psychological theories would be quite interesting. Please, do not be too literal and misunderstand me. This article is not meant to encourage or discourage you from helping someone cheat in an exam. I am merely discussing a pragmatic viewpoint to this debate with the mention of a few somewhat shocking aspects. A few months ago, investigators said that as many as 20 people were involved in or stood and watched the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl outside a California high school homecoming dance Saturday night. This is all too similar to Kitty Genovese’s case, which is discussed in almost every introductory Psychology course. Kitty was a woman who was raped and stabbed to death near her home in New York, in 1964. Apparently, she too had an audience, and none of the reported 46 neighbors called the police. As horrific as these cases sound, and how much we would like to place all of the blame on the passivity of the people involved, social psychological studies have made sense of what may have caused their reaction.

Joke: The business man was rather put off when the bum approached him and asked for 5 dollars for a cup of coffee. “You can buy a cup of coffee for 60 cents,” he responded tartly. “Right you are,” conceded the bum cheerfully, “but I like to leave a big tip.”

Sexual Education

Sex out Loud!

Gaining the Upper Hand on Birth Control! Samer Abi Chaker, MD, MPH

Let’s take for example a university couple that you know well. From there on, we’re gonna create a hypothetical situation, though you can say it’s too hypothetical but you’ll see it can be closer to reality than you think! They’ve been with each other for quite a while, and definitely enjoying every bit of their time together! They are so joyful together that even you enjoy every second of their company. Every time you think or talk about them you say that no problem can scare this couple. They’re so in sync that it’s so hard for them to freak out or even pick a fight! Yet, one day, out of the blue you cross paths with one of them and you note the unusual: a grim and very worrisome face… , minds Later in the day as you hang out with them they seem so distant wandering in a different place…

44

So why do we adopt such methods? Probably because You’re so puzzled by their looks that you try hard to decipher their expressions. You notice that she is feeling scared, you even notice that sometime she’s talking to herself!!! On the other hand, he feels no less of a burden, and is as lost in his thoughts as she is. Since you’re a good friend, with an air of sympathy, you attempt to inquire upon the troublesome attitudes. However, you’re met by a very reluctant look so you elect not to press further but rather give them more time. You made your point; you’re available for them, when they’re ready they will talk... Two days later, you happen to cross paths, and you note: everything is back to normal. Even better, they can’t keep their hands off each other! Naturally you’re happy for them, but there’s a burning desire in you to know what was going on. You ask why? And the answer was simple, she had her menses… Phew!!! How many times have you heard about or lived such a scare? No matter what culture you live in, early or unplanned pregnancy is a great burden. And for good reason, I mean you’re bringing a child to this world! The risk of conceiving a pregnancy is real in every unprotected sexual encounter, whether it is simple flirting without penetration (yes it can happen though chances are minimal) or sex as we know it. Still, the will to have sex without conceiving a child is omnipresent. The methods we adopted to avoid pregnancy are plenty and quite exotic. For example, in an effort to incapacitate growing spermatozoids, Japanese men used to submerge their testicles in hot water every day. More popular around the world is withdrawal (or “wasta” as we call it in Arabic), the action consists of the male partner withdrawing his penis from the vagina just before ejaculating; therefore the semen would be released outside the body. Another common method consists of counting the days of the menstrual cycle, and based on the cycle days; choose to engage in sex just after menstruation or just before menstruation. However such methods are ineffective and many unplanned pregnancies end up happening.

1. we are not aware of

other alternatives, or

harmful.

Current methods of contraception can be broken up into groups. We have the “Hormonal Contraceptives” such as the oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), morning after pill, transdermal patch, or vaginal ring. We also have the “Barrier Contraceptives” such as the male condom, the diaphragm, or the cervical sponge. Lastly “miscellaneous” methods such as the intrauterine devices and spermicides… As you can see the choice is quite vast! In this article I will address the most commonly used ones, still I would greatly advise you to learn more about the other methods (just check out the link at the end of the article). First and foremost, don’t be alarmed by the word “Hormonal”, in our society we are accustomed to directly negate anything that has the word “hormonal” in it! “Yiii tante, el Hormonet ma byeswo!!! Ana sme3et 3an mara 7aram saret kteer nas7a min el hormone! W we7deh tenyeh kel el wa2et byouja3a dahra! Shou baddik bhal shaghleh, and ba3ref tabib a3sheb gheir shekel bdalneh rou7 la3endo!!!” Unfortunately we are a poorly informed community, and we tend to listen and remember what we want from a story and retell it in our own way “to make it interesting” yet the story suddenly misses the whole point!!! I assure you OCPs and morning after pills are safe to use, given that they are used properly and recommended by a physician (a real one). So what are OCPs (or the “pill”)? Basically OCPs come in two forms, progestin-only pills or estrogen-progestin combinations. Both of which work to prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg, and when the egg is not available, fertilization cannot take place. With perfect use, i.e. when taken without missing any dose, OCPs are than more 99% effective. With typical use, i.e. if you missed one dose they are usually 92% effective. Therefore if by any chance you missed one pill at any given day, it’s ok, just check out the foot note to see what to do!

So that’s one type of pill, however there’s another pill. This one is the “morning-after pill” or in French “la pillule du lendemain”. This pill should be taken after a suspected unprotected intercourse. But to be effective this pill should be taken within 3 days or 72 hours of the suspected unprotected intercourse.

46

Otherwise there is a risk of pregnancy!

Why am I mentioning this? Well because many times when we engage in unprotected sex, the idea of being pregnant freaks us out. A common reaction to this kind of threat is ignoring that it exists. So given that someone ends up postponing the pill, they end up forgetting. Little does one know that the fear will come and haunt you back when menstruation is about to start and no blood trace shows up! This is associated with a bout of stress, which often makes the situation even worse! (stress is known to withhold menstruation in some cases) And from there it becomes a perpetual cycle! In most cases menses eventually start, even though later than usual. But the story does not always have the ending we seek. And some people end up being pregnant an issue that complicates further actions…

So in short what to do? Simple: prevention, prevention, prevention!!! And prevention starts with condom use. Guys, condoms are the best way available today for preventing BOTH pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. They are cheap, easy to use, and available at all pharmacies! Still if you feel that you and your partner have been in a relationship for a while and you trust each other enough, and would like to have unprotected sex, make sure that you are on OCPs. Still, if you happened to have unprotected sex without being on OCPs, the morning after pill is also available in most pharmacies, do not hesitate in asking for it, pharmacists would be more than willing to explain how to use that pill! Lastly if you do get pregnant, life might look grim to you, choice may be limited and prospects of you being able to talk to others may be even more restricted. But I tell you one thing, do not despair, there are many people you can approach, ďŹ rst thing I would do is go straight to the youth-friendly clinic at your university, from there on you can explore all possible options available. Illegal abortion is not the answer, and more often than not can do more harm than good‌

AN EGG, AN IDEA, AN EVENT. It was about 300 years ago, while Sir Isaac Newton was sitting under a tree in Cambridge having his afternoon nap, when suddenly something hit his head. If the history books are to be believed, that something was an apple. However, reliable contemporary witnesses were ready to swear an oath that it was in fact, an egg (wherever this egg might have come from). Apparently there were even philosophers who pursued the theory, that the first chicken was hatched from this very egg... Well, be it as it may, this fortuitous event granted mankind the law of gravity! Since then physicists, mathematicians and other renowned scientists worldwide are racking their brains as to how one could defy and outwit this natural phenomenon. THE CHALLENGE: Who can manage to drop an egg from the dizzy heights of 15 meters and get it to land safe, sound and unscathed? This challenge consists of defying gravity with wit and a great deal of imagination. The contest was open to all members of the university (Students, Professors, Tutors, Lecturers and Assistants), as well as all direct descendants of Sir Isaac Newton who were invited to develop a flying device that allows

an egg to safely land after having been dropped. Each team consisted of a maximum of three members, whereby only one contestant was allowed to go on to the flying platform which was a scissor lift brought specially for this event! Not only was the well-being of the egg being judged, but also the creativity of the protective “Egguipment” and its team were evaluated by an independent jury (which is not made up of chickens’ by-the-way). The event took place in three different universities. They enrolled around 40 teams divided among the three locations: • Notre Dame University (NDU, Zouk Mosbeh): 26th April, 2010. • Lebanese American University (LAU - Byblos): 28th April, 2010. • Universite Saint Joseph (USJ - ESIB): 4th May, 2010. A student DJ was adding to the atmosphere an energized ambiance and with the collaboration of the famous MC “Tanguy Faucon” who heated up the crowd and coordinated the event flow. Apart from fame and honor and maybe even an entry in the history books there were some truly up-lifting prizes for the first three teams in each university!!

(continuity of part 1 that appeared in may 2010 issue)

The Hypocrisy “Ah, those good old days,” John started, still releasing a chuckle every once in a while, “When we were young and free...and naive” then he pointed at Richard, “at least some of us were.” Richard frowned. “Buddy?” John continued, “How well do you know me?” Richard smiled slyly and answered, “I know you enough to confidently say that you are among the most big headed people I’ve ever met...and you’re a cold hearted bastard.” “Knowing that,” John continued with a smile, “Would I be so foolish as to get tangled up in affairs of the heart?” Sarcasm dripped heavily from his voice. “I’m listening,” Richard said as he leaned forward taking in everything John was saying. “Listen little boy, we’re almost twenty five years old, and not that we’re old or anything, but you and I both know that nice innocent girls don’t come by too often these days. You know, with the whole ‘women have rights now’ and all that crap.” Richard raised an eyebrow, obviously waiting for more. “You can’t control them anymore or sway them however you like. They can choose to not be with you if you don’t play your cards right.” “What are you getting at, Johnny boy?” Richard asked. “I know I’m young now, but I won’t be for long. At one point in my life I will not be able to depend on my good looks...” Richard chuckled. John ignored him and continued, “and we both know I’m not the richest guy in the world. So, I found someone, maybe a little bit earlier than I expected, but I found a lady I can trust enough to know how she thinks and made her need me in a way where I know she would never be able to leave me. Count all the teddy bears I got her... she really should grow up.” John leaned back on the couch and added, “Do you think just one woman, even one as wonderful as Ashley, could satisfy me?” Richard also leaned back and said slowly, “You sick bastard.” John said as he smiled, “That I am, my friend.” “Keep that pretty car,” Richard said, “Natasha is expecting me.” “Natasha?” John said sarcastically. “Johnny, we were friends all throughout university. Do you really think our views on things, including views on women, are that different?” “Good point,” John smiled. “You will pay up, won’t you?” Richard smiled, “I hate you.” John’s smile broadened, “I can live with that.” He walked him out the door then headed to the bed room to change into his gave a small, “What the...” as he entered. He pajamas. A red faced, teary eyed Ashley was sprawled on the bed with a small mountain of used tissues on one side. “Ashley...” he started. She didn’t look up. “I didn’t hear you come back in...” “I’ll call the lawyer tomorrow,” she said weakly.

52

John bit his lip and sat on the bed next to her. He placed a hand on her shoulder. He was surprised she didn’t push him away, with that he realized that the damage he had caused was much greater than he thought. “You weren’t supposed to hear that,” he whispered. “Is it true?” she asked, a tiny flicker of hope could be heard behind the words. “I’ll explain everything if you give me a chance,” John said. Ashley shrugged, “Trust me, at the moment, I’m not going anywhere.” He took a deep breath, and started, “I’ve known Richard all through out my university years. He is one of the lowest people I’ve ever met,” John smiled, “He was always jealous of me, especially that I got the girls.” Ashley didn’t think that was amusing at all, “is there a point to what you’re saying?” It wiped the smile off of John’s face, “He just wanted to beat me at anything. I kicked his butt in almost everything we did, including any bet we ever made... even setting the dean’s office on fire...” Ashley had a look of disgust on her face, “Both of you are children.” “He bet that I would let go of whatever life I was leading, which by the way I’m not proud of now, and settle down with a woman...and care for her...” John sighed, “He won.” Ashley looked confused. “He won,” John said again simply. “But you said....” Ashley started. “Does it matter what I said,” John pleaded, “Listen to me. The bet was major, why do you think I didn’t contact him all those years?” Ashley stared at him. “Did you really believe the crap I said about losing touch with him?” John voice was becoming more anxious now. “Umm...yes?” Ashley replied. “Baby,” John grabbed her arms, “I was scared of meeting him and having him find out about you,” John took a deep breath, “the bet was, if he won, he takes whatever car I’d be driving and I’d have to come clean to the dean about the fire. I’d have to pay for the damages which can be over four thousand dollars and maybe a trip to jail!” Ashley was frowning, “What about him? If he had lost.” “I’d also get whatever car he would be driving and...his summer house which he should have inherited by now.” “Oh...” Ashley started, “I wouldn’t mind a summer house.” John smiled, “And a new car?”

John was lying in bed looking at the ceiling, thinking. ‘How easy it is,’ he thought, ‘to fool people.’ He pondered that a little bit more before turning on his side to try getting some sleep. His last thought was, and he didn’t realize that he said it out loud, “How easy it is to be a hypocrite.” Little did he know that Ashley was still awake at his side listening. She wondered who of them he had fooled, herself or Richard.

A tale of two cities, by Charles Dickens

The Book

With 200 million copies sold, it is the most printed original English book, and among the most famous works of fiction. It depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period. It follows the lives of several protagonists through these events, most notably Charles Darnay, a French oncearistocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate wrath of the revolution despite his virtuous nature, and Sydney Carton, a dissipated British barrister who endeavors to redeem his ill-spent life out of love for Darnay’s wife, Lucie Manette.

The Author Charles Dickens was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and one of the most popular of all time, responsible for some of English literature’s most iconic characters. Many of his novels, with their recurrent theme of social reform, first appeared in magazines in serialized form, a popular format at the time. Unlike other authors who completed entire novels before serialization, Dickens often created the episodes as they were being serialized. The practice lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by cliffhangers to keep the public looking forward to the next installment. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print.

Critique This novel which parallels the rise of the French revolution compares and contrasts life in two cities Paris and London. It also develops a very intricate plot that is difficult to follow if one does not read steadily. In other words, it’s not a light plot that you can set down for a few days and pick back up. On the other hand, it’s extremely engaging and you won’t want to put it down.

Amanda Kik

Making of photography and artistic composition Passionate about her photography, camera, pictures and colors, Amanda Kik, first year student at the Universite Saint-Esprit de Kaslik (USEK) majoring in audiovisual studies, exposes her work and opinions on photography through The Gate University Students Magazine…

“Photography makes me create my own universe and expose things with my own vision” says Amanda about what photography means to her. She’s still not a professional as she says, yet at amateur stages, despite the opinion of her fans and friends, as she doesn’t use highly professional equipment yet at least. “I dream of having my own studio, my own space one day. But it’s fine I’m still 19 and time is still ahead to develop” she adds. But how did it start? Just like many things nowadays, Amanda Kik happened to post pictures she took on facebook and the intensity and amount of comments pushed her to the first step: Get a camera. Amanda is still not sure whether she wants to develop a profession in photography itself. She believes that the world of pictures extends beyond simply photography, into movies, films, cinema etc… Her passion for photography seems very much concentrated in colors, besides the composition.”The message “way of photography” as she describes it and the image’s composition. behind my pictures is simple: It doesn’t have to be a crowded one” she says. Amanda doesn’t place any restrictions on the kind of pictures she likes to take or “compose”. “I don’t choose what I want to picture. I just capture the moment” she explains. Despite that, when it comes to people, Amanda Kik believes that the success of her picture is very much related to her feelings for the person she’s picturing. “It might not sound professional, but if I don’t carry nice feelings for the person I’m photographing, the picture would just not look nice” she says. Amanda yet likes to express beauty in her pictures, as ugly elements would make ugly pictures according to her. Her challenge is the challenge of every artist in Lebanon. “Becoming a professional photographer in Lebanon would mean that you’ll do almost nothing but picture and film wedding ceremonies” she believes. “Abroad it’s different but the good is that awareness on photography and talents is increasing among new generations” she adds. On the time where she would do her first exhibition, Amada Kik says: “Just when I’m convinced myself that my pictures are beautiful.” With regard to the use of technology, Amanda Kik stresses on the importance of using Photoshop that makes things easier for photographers. “I use it for retouching so I can deliver it like I want it to be at the end.”

come up items for this year’s IBDAA

Coinciding with International Biodiversity Day was AUB’s very own student poster exhibit on May 21, 2010, highlighting ways that can both preserve biodiversity while finding solutions to common problems. Bad smells, fungus, cigarette smoke could be completely eradicated with household items such as cinnamon, charcoal, and thyme. Similarly, hair collected from beauty salons could serve to clean up an oil spill, and the miswak plant could replace traditional toothbrushes and toothpaste… These are just a few examples of the dozens of projects which more than 300 students from a variety of disciplines took part in. Dubbed IBDAA [Arabic for innovation and an acronym for International Biodiversity Day at AUB], the poster exhibit is an annual event that has been attracting bigger participation and a bigger audience each year. Held this year between West Hall and College Hall and organized by Ibsar, the Nature Conservation Center for Sustainable Futures at AUB, the exhibition aimed to teach students about nature and help them appreciate its value by learning “how to perceive it, how to conserve it, and how to use it sustainably.” Participants consisted of students from several science and nonscience courses, including chemistry, biology, environmental health and civil engineering graphic design, mythology, English, and ceramics. The artistic contributions from the ceramics course showed some abstract representations of environmental destruction. One work of art called ‘Nature’ consisted of three sculptures, one represented the heart of nature with stitched-up scars indicating the damage inflicted on earth by humans.

60

Other projects also included a microbiology study carried out at the Jeita Grotto to show signs that the ecological balance there has been upset. For instance, there are already traces of E. coli in the caves, probably due to sewage disposal, and phototrophic bacteria which would not naturally be found in such a dark environment. Other students found that adding zero valent iron to drinking water could neutralize the effects of certain harmful chemicals that may be present.

s te ra u g u a in n io t a d n u Fo d e le a Al-W the advanced technical training center in Saida With the direction of His Excellency Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal Bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saoud, President of the Al-Waleed Bin Talal Foundation, represented by Vice President Her Excellency Minister Leila el-Solh Hamadeh, the Mechanical, Electornics, Electrical and IT advanced training center of the “Hay’a Islamiyya lil Ri’aya” was inaugurated in Saida, after being renovated by the foundation. That was in the presence of Judge Cheikh Ahmed Zein as well as the head of the Management Board Hani Abou Zeinab and Executive Manager Mr. Mouta’ Majzoub and the

members. Head of the center, Mr. Tarek Zarif, thanked Al-Waleed’s foundation for its initiative. Judge Zein also commended it asking Minister Solh to offer further assistance to the city of Saida, which lacks the least life basics. Minister Solh then had a word saying: “We came to you today to support the youth in their final formation stages before facing the challenges of life, and also to support the organizations that work in the service of their community and region, one of which is this organization that we have known closely and sensed their credibility at work, so we congratulate Saida for it. We came today amidst all that to prove that the process of Al-Waleed Bin Talal’s Foundation that started more than 6 years ago is on-going, with God’s will, to keep a space of hope for many of our compatriots that still believe in a promising future, away from frustrating crises. Dear brothers in Saida, I have spoken to you as Vice President of

the foundation but I wish to get back to my roots, to my lovely city Saida, and say a word of truth . My visit today carries lots of meanings, but also lots of wish es. People of Saida, what’s happening? When people plant their soil with martyrs and irrigate it with their blood, they recolt disp ute instead of amity, slavery instead of independence, humiliati on instead of pride and separation instead of unity? You are the people that liberate d your souls first from the remaining of the mandate periods , thanks to the sense of citizenship of Riad el-Solh. You were always where your country needed you to be, surrounding it with its flag and the spirit of Riad el-Solh. You are the ones that were never divided neither by churches nor by mosques, than ks to the pact of Riad el-Solh. What’s happening? I only see qua rreling parties, racing for crises and political wars. You would be wrong to continue so. Remain one people at the image that my father Riad el-Solh loved, so we may always have cities to live in and countries to govern. And thank you.” Then Minister Solh was granted a trophy followed by a tour in the center’s laboratories.

Are the dots black or white?

Mr. Moody grumbles about bad time-keeping trains from morning till night! On one particular morning he was quiet justified. His train left on time for the one hour journey, to Clarksville, and it arrived 5 minutes late. However, Mr. Moody ‘s watch showed it to be 3 minutes early, so he adjusted his watch by putting it forward 3 minutes. His watch kept time during the day, and on the return journey in the evening the train started on time, according to his watch, and arrived on time, according to the station clock. If the train travelled 25 percent faster on the return journey than it did on the morning journey, was the station clock fast or slow, and by how much?

Horoscope

JUNE 2010 horoscopes Aries Groundbreaking Change Your pioneering spirit awakens this month, and not just with a fresh cycle of opportunity. You now have the chance of a lifetime to break free from you past and make major headway toward positive change. You are being given a glimpse of your future, but it’s up to you to battle insecurities and morph this vision into reality.

Taurus Dreaming at the Speed of Light The future is coming up fast this month, offering you a glimpse at what’s coming next in life. You are being challenged to break from the past now, and should feel the motivation to transform yourself and your way of thinking to start reaching for your dreams. Fresh ideas abound, yet you still must maintain discipline in your finances and other resources.

Gemini Break on Through to the Other Side You may feel disoriented as you adjust to the major shifts and changes this month brings. Angst is provoked when the old battles with the new, and unfortunately this can’t be cured by any particular course of action. Still, you can expect the pace of your life to kick up a notch now, but there may be so much to do that it’s tricky to keep up with it all.

Cancer Hungry for Change Your attention is drawn to your career life this month, and restlessness about your job could provoke you to do battle with others or seek a totally new profession. Just think twice before you leap in any direction -- even if you don’t act right away, the near future brings plenty of chances to pull the trigger of professional change.

Leo Ready to Rock and Roll There’s great potential for change this month, as long as you remain open to what lies ahead. As obstacles drop away and you are able to see the bigger picture, you must prioritize your choices so you don’t become so overwhelmed that you end up doing nothing at all. Luckily, it should be easier to narrow your focus now and concentrate your physical energy toward the actions you choose.

Virgo Counting on Change Major opportunities can come and go in a flash, so grab them while you can. You must keep pace with the movers and shakers of the world now, and should, thankfully, receive a boost of energy this month. But it’s time to take the initiative and begin new projects rather than using your newfound energies to simply defend what you already have.

Libra Quantum Leap You are finally free from the oppression of details, and are able capitalize on the present moment. Unusual people come into your life now to open your mind to unorthodox ideas and exciting new ways of interacting. Yet while your horizons are being broadened, you could feel so overwhelmed that you’d rather go into hiding or flee all together.

Scorpio Breaking the Silence June kicks off an exciting three-month period of brand new work opportunities and a chance to develop new skills. Becoming a more effective team player is necessary as you’re forced to deal with uncooperative colleagues or unexpected crises. Just beware forging ahead blindly -- romantic or financial schemes that arise now could prove to be unrealistic.

Sagittarius Surf’s Up! This is a month for taking chances and having fun, Sag. Love is in the air now, and there’s opportunity to improve your relationships thanks to a boost in your self-confidence. New ideas and unconventional, spontaneous people are set to enter your life, and you’re ready for the ride -- just don’t lose sight of the most practical issues.

Capricorn Growth Spurt Powerful changes are brewing this month while you’re busy dealing with a million-and-one tasks at work and at home. You may feel inspired to relocate, redecorate or even launch your own business now, but you’ll need to manage details carefully. June is about thinking outside the box and making bold moves -- just measure the runway before you take off!

Aquarius Future Shock This June offers a shocking glimpse at what’s ahead in life -- not just in your distant future, but also the immediate present, as your long-term goals seem close enough to touch now. Restrictions fall away and you’re able to change your outmoded habits to obtain a much broader perspective, yet all this enthusiasm is no excuse to shirk responsibilities or run out on promises.

Pisces Financial Frenzy There are big money-making ideas floating out there this month, and you feel the urge to shake the money tree. As you catch sight of a new path to professional fulfillment, be sure to analyze your facts carefully, since reckless behavior is a possibility now.
