Student Elections Day Documentary

AUB Election Day runs smoothly The mood on campus on Election Day proved more tepid than usual on November 17, 2009, with fewer students running for the Student Representative Council (SRC) than in previous years. Only 209 students ran for spots on the 109-member SRC, while the 2008 elections had produced 377 candidates. Although turnout was low throughout the day, by evening, large numbers of voters headed to the polls pushing participation rates to 73 percent--a figure similar to those of previous years--according to official results released by the Student Affairs Office on November 19. Nevertheless, elections in all seven faculties and schools ran smoothly, and students refrained from causing a ruckus. Divided into two main camps, under the banners of the yellow “Students at Work” and the red “Student League,” in addition to a motley group of independents--which included the AUB-based No Frontiers, green, and secular groups--students campaigned for more than a week to win over voters.

What stood out this year was a small group lobbying for blank ballots. As usual, access to campus was restricted to students and staff with valid AUB IDs, in addition to print, radio, and TV reporters covering the event. The Office of Student Affairs, which oversees elections every year, enforced voting rules in the strictest fashion.

Moreover, Student Affairs Dean Maroun Kisirwani banned all political flags, post ers, flyers, and photos on campus. To help enforce these rules, the Office of Student Affairs could rely on four close dcircuit television (CCTV) cameras, insta lled last year around West Hall, to record and punish, if needed, any violators of the University Code of Conduct. By 5.30pm, shortly after voting had ende d, two large computer-linked screens were set up outside West Hall. These beamed election results to spirited students, while also serving as a buffer between the two camps. Nevertheless, the two sides did not skimp on taunts, boos, and cheers. The screens kept students distracted with the results, as well as with some welcome humor. Indeed, students typing in resu lts would sometimes send out light-hearted messages to the thronging students in English or Arabic-in-Latin script: “Tawlo belkon (Please be patient),” one mess age said. Another teased students with the words: “Breaking News.” And after a brief pause, student technicians typed,” Road ents Magazine te University Stud Ga e Th C winners Runner is dead.” the names of SR hereby publishes by the d ce un ficially anno per faculty, as of blished pu d an t Newly-elected SRC representatives still iru n University of Be ica er Am have to vote in the week of Novembe . r on AUB’s website 30-December 4 for SRC cabinets as well as was the 17 representatives on the 24-memb where this report er that by the time te t ye No t no University Student-Faculty Council (USF VP elections were C). done, USFC and conducted. NDU Elections (November 20, 2009) In a very democratic atmosphere, full of enthusiasm for service and student representation, NDU students started voting since 8: 30 AM to elect a new student body for the 2009 – 2010 academic year. The electoral day witnessed a high turnout from students who came to practice their right to elect council members that will be responsible of representing them before their faculties and their university’s administration, as well as to play their positive role in the development and service of their university, while giving the example required to build strong political foundations for their country Lebanon. NDU’s electoral process was directed by the director of the Student Affairs Office, Father Salim Rajji, as well as SAO’s assistant director Dr. Ziad Fahd, along with a large administrative and academic team, to make sure the whole process goes without any problems. Two lists were competing for 33 seats distributed upon 7 faculties, each of which had its own program tackling its issues and needs.

Mr. Suheil Matar, Director General of the Public Relations office at NDU, said during the electoral day: “the university’ s administration is very proud of its stud ents who, today, are making an extra step on the path of democracy. Candidates, as well as their supporters, expressed today a serious spirit of respect for rules and regulations and for constructive competition for representation. Our administration worked hard for this day to be calm and joyful, away from tens ion. We thank as well the security forces for their care to ensure security to all stud ents and to the electoral process itself as well, and we apologize from all citizens that suffered from the traffic that occurred at our university’s entrance gates. We hope this day ends with a victory for all stud ents in this democracy test and we thank all the media that is kindly and objective ly covering today’s event”.

The final ceremony took place at the Issam Fares Hall and was attended by many actors, actresses, directors, deans of faculties, students, professors as well as sponsoring companies’ managers. The “best young director” award was won by Jessica Younes (NDU) for hel film “Elias”. Others received various prizes from the sponsoring companies as well. The first three winning films were exposed in the ceremony and the committee declared 7 November 2010 as the date for the fourth annual festival next year.

NDU’s faculty of Engineering has launched a conference under the title of “city street” in the Issam Fares Hall and was attended by the deans of faculties, professors, students and businessmen from 12 countries. Dean Habib Melki exposed how cities around the world have become very similar

with skyscrapers filling the skies, traffic filling streets, crowds of passengers falling for the speed of social and economic dynamics, and highlighted the special features that still mar k every city and keep its special identity. NDU’s VP for academic affairs Dr. Amin Rihani considered the conference a call for important discussions, from different perspectives, and for a deep re-assessme nt of city streets taking in consideration time and spa ce, design, construction, arts, business, media and soc iety. Dr. Jack Harb presided the first session that discussed three topics: the front appearance in buildings in Islamic Cities, giving a new life to old cities while keeping the image of its streets and finally cities’ heritage and its protection strategies. The second session was presided by Dr. George Abdelnour and exposed three topics as well: societies and streets yesterday and today, construction identity in the golden era and Arab writings in Lebanon and the Arab World. Participants then paid a visit to Downtown Beirut where the conference pursued its activities.

(NDU- Course policy, NDU’s academic Integrity policy )

And thus, every student at university is to abide by the university’s policy on academic integrity including respecting and maintaining copyrights. Consequently, students are expected to buy any “original” material, especially textbooks to. However, students face a dilemma whether to buy the original copy or just kill the book and photocopy it. What is the main story between the lines? What makes students photocopy a book? To start with, the story is mostly about the cost of books. In Lebanon, most universities require foreign books that are scarcely found in the Lebanese market. Hence, students find it difficult to buy a book which can mainly be found outside the country. The students then solve their problem by either finding someone who willed to buy the original copy of the book and photocopy it or “Google” the book and download it for free from websites. However, Lebanese bookshops do provide these books by ordering them in limited quantities. On the other hand, they

24

charge the student with heavy taxes and burning prices. How is the college student, who nevertheless has no fixed income, to afford buying these books? Many libraries have found their way into marketing photocopied books and made a huge income out of it by strategically attracting the needy customers (college students).

And in this case, both teachers and students are put under the pressure of copyrights and copylefts. Some teachers may overlook this issue and move on with their courses, thus jeopardizing the university’s policy, while others may reinforce this law and send students out to the real world of business to buy the book or drop/fail the course. Under such circumstances, many bookshops started offering certain deals to students. For instance, certain bookshops offer to re-buy books for 50% of their price when courses are over, or placing original books in university libraries for sharing. Hence, the student has options to help him/her acquire the necessary material for the courses.

To buy or not to buy? that is the question that remains in the life of a college student. The dilemma is protecting intellectual property rights on the one hand and taking into account the economic situations of students on the other hand. Therefore, the solution should be that the

universities have to:

1. Prohibit any kind of photocopying or downloading etc. 2. Buy these books 3. Lease the books to the students. Students have to:

1.

Stop infringing IPR (Intellectual Property Rights)

2. Pay symbolic rates for renting the books 3. Hold the books clean and in good situation during the rent period.

25

Alternatively, universities have also found a way to banning photocopied books through book policies, yet students did not abide by this regulation. The universities then had to rely on other methods which combine their policies with the teachers’ complaints. They decided that teachers have the right to send a student out of class if not having the original book. This policy may work for a certain time but for how long?

NGOs and Youth

“We give life … It’s in our blood!” “The greatest proof of responsible citizenship is to serve someone you don’t know…” Lebanon suffers from continuous scarcity in blood. Whether you need to be subjected to a medical operation or whether you need blood transfusion for any reason, you literally need to “campaign” to provide the needed quantities of your blood type. Every Lebanese citizen needs to always have in hand a complete directory of all hospitals, blood banks, potential donors etc… and always be ready to feel the humiliation of begging for blood units. Yorgui Teyrouz, a young university student currently and founder of “Donner Sang Compter”, sensed this suffering since early age, and decided to act…

The beginnings

It all started within a small group of scout members who used to call each other whenever anyone needed blood .The contact list started growing, and people had started calling Teyrouz as he was able to link them with people who could donate, simply by searching through his contact list.

On May 17th, 2009, the idea of Donner Sang Compter was among the 10 finalists out of 2000 participants who won 50,000 $ each, in the KAAYIA awards, dedicated to launch the project and cover the costs of the needed campaigns. This was a big push to Donner Sang Compter.

Q : Another challenge: confidence and faith

A : Donner Sang Compter is a non-

profit organization that recruits potential donors, organizes their information (blood type, contact, availability, etc…) and links them to people in need of blood. Practically, someone would call the operator; they explain the blood type needed the quantity and their location. The operator will look at the excel sheet and filter down to the possible donors within a reasonable distance. On another hand, it works on spreading awareness on the importance of including blood donation within the culture of our society and as part of everyone’s life, through organized campaigns, especially in universities.

Q : The role of universities ? A :Universities play a vital role in making Donner Sang Compter’s job easier. According to Teyrouz, university students are primary targets mainly because they can afford devoting time and efforts for a cause, and technically speaking, they’re young and therefore can provide healthier blood than the elder. And on another hand, it’s the easiest environment for word-of-mouth spreading and recruitment. “90% of our working force is made up of university students” says Teyrouz.

Q : Hatred and fanaticism: a problem? A : Teyrouz reveals a dangerous truth about weird behaviors faced with some donors. He cites sample example and prefer to keep other uglier ones off the record: “If he’s not from my sect, I refuse to give him blood.” “If you guys vote for us in university X, I’ll get you all our guys listed on your database.” Teyrouz believes it’s a very sad fact, but true, and probably due to the sense of hatred for “others” and “selfishness” that wars have left in the hearts of the Lebanese. It’s unfortunately part of our culture, as Teyrouz says. “If we look deeper into some sentences that our parents repeat to us, we get to understand where this culture comes from.” He cites for example: “Why care for others? Take care of your own self and let go!” “Stop getting yourself distracted. Focus on your own affairs and let others take care of their own!” In Lebanese terms, those are: “Chou baddna bghayrna? So77tak ahamm chi! Hayda el gharib chou tale3elna menno! Htamm bi cheghlak enta eza sarlak chi ma 7ada ra7 yettalla3 fik!”

Q : Seeds of hope A : Teyrouz: “In January, we were able to meet 80 blood demands per month. Now in October only, we were capable of meeting more than 200 demands!” Those improvements make Teyrouz and his team very enthusiastic about the amount of support they are getting and the capacities they are building and expanding.

Q : Future projects A : Teyrouz reveals to The Gate about the future projects that Donner Sang Compter is planning to launch. Donner Sang Compter is working on organizing a seminar in 2010, gathering all blood bank responsibles with professional medical teams, to unify blood donation standards and criteria all over Lebanon. On another hand, the organization is preparing continuous recruitment and awareness campaigns on road, in coffee shops, cinemas, universities, schools, to further enlarge their donors’ database.

35

Q : How does it work exactly?

A : Teyrouz feels angry when asked by some people: “Do you seriously believe that you’ll be able to make a change? A young person like you will now solve what all governments failed to achieve? Etc…” It’s hard for people like him to accept the lack of confidence and faith, especially that Donner Sang Compter is proving its efficiency in the field of blood needs

Featured Interview

Sabine Fouchaux

“Without the right management, you can never reach!” In her calm family residence in Rabieh, Sabine Fouchaux, singer of the famous “B3atli Email” and “Bes2al 7ali” songs, welcomed The Gate for this friendly conversation and spoke of her successful experience in a time where new performers are rising almost on daily basis. Clearly full of passion for her artistic career, Sabine Fouchaux speaks of her beginnings, projects, future plans and dreams to The Gate’s readers…

The beginnings “I started singing when I was still very little at school. My audience was restricted to friends, relatives and neighbors. I liked gathering them and performing for them. This is how I started living my talented experience, until I first met Ghassan Rahbani at age 18 and that was my first step into the professional world of singing and performing. I made my first song “b3atli email” and it was a success, which continued with my second one “Bes2al 7ali”, as well. Now I am very happy to be working with my new managers at Signature Productions and I have a new clip that will be launched within a month! The new song is called ‘Lessa’ and it’s in Arabic.”

Style, Timing and Management Although she had been absent from screens since her last song, people, especially youth, still carry Sabine Fouchaux in their memory. Sabine believes this is due to many factors (luck being just in the first step). “When b3atli email was released, the song broke the standards that were still rigid at that time. So it made a positive shock and kept me and my song in people’s memory. It was also unusual to have a very much western-looking girl singing in Arabic. This gave an even more amplified impact. And finally, it’s thanks to proper management that I was able to reach the public successfully.”

38

“I can sing both. Language doesn’t matter to me but I will keep singing in Arabic. Almost all of my audience is more attracted to it than to English. And Arabic opens for me bigger opportunities to reach the whole Arab-speaking populations. This same path happens as well to international English-speaking singers. They do their first steps in their own countries and then manage to expand their success throughout their region until they finally reach their whole continent.”

Singing: Hobby or career? Sabine quickly affirms: “Singing is my career and I can hardly see myself anywhere else. My whole life revolves around it.”

Till when? “Definitely not in any way before 15 years from now. By then, I’d probably think of maintaining my life with a business career. But now I’m still young and full of energy and I want to invest it completely in my singing career.”

What you need is the right strategies and connections.”

Encouragements “I encourage every young girl or boy, who feels that he or she carries the talent, to follow the right path, take the challenge, develop skills and good management and build a career in it.”

What about university?

Personal life?

“When you’re in the arts business, it’s hard to think of devoting time for university. I tried to get into academics but my time is too random. What if I had exams and at the same time had to travel for a concert for example? It’s very risky to commit for university and singing at the same time. I am however studying music since three years with Fouad Awad and I still have one year to graduate. This was my alternative and very much helped to improve my talent.”

Many artists answer questions about their personal life, some because they have no problem sharing it with the public, some because they believe it does good marketing for them… And many refuse to answer to maintain a margin of freedom and independence. As for Sabine: “I used to speak of my personal life when asked by journalists, but then I regretted it. The only thing I would speak of is probably the day I get married. It’s wrong to think that revealing your love stories and life issues is a good way to advertise yourself or to please your audience’s curiosity. Many among my audience used to blame me when I answered personal questions and I respect their care for me.”

Challenges… Apparent success is the result of hard efforts and always hides behind it series of challenges in every step. Sabine confirms that and explains that those “are due to the sense of

Gossip?

“It follows me everywhere and at any time, even when I’m away. In some cases, I witness lots of lies being written or spoken about me. I never answer in order not to incite curiosity about rumors. “ I select the right time and conditions to reply!”

Too many singers… Sabine expresses her concern about the excess of video clips being produced, and the surplus of music and clips TV stations. Those would disperse the public’s attention somehow and reduce the exposure of some that might deserve it much more than others. She believes however that despite this excess, the public always maintains its loyalty to singers that mark their memory with special songs or clips “and this is why I am very confident and enthusiastic about my new song’s video clip. I’m sure people will love it. It’s been a while that I’m away and I care to get back in touch with my audience.”

Singing: A business? “A singer must be very careful about maintaining the balance between business and talent development. Sometimes one might fall in the trap of getting busy following up on the parties to do and the management to adopt and other pure business stuff. And finally the last thing to think of would be the essential, which is singing. In my case, singing is my priority and the essence of my work. I don’t want to ever kill that spirit in me!”

Final Message. Time runs! What you can do today, don’t leave it for tomorrow, and never be passive in your life!

enmity that rises against you when you succeed. Greed and jealousy could push some people to try to hurt you by all means if they feel you are threatening their interests. Rare are the ones who sincerely want you to succeed. As much as beauty appears in everything we offer, dirtiness still makes its way everywhere. Another challenge is “to find proper management and production. I felt how important it is mostly when I was alone for some time. It was a very hard period for me on all levels. As you know, I’m still too young. What can I do alone, at age 22 only, if the right people are not at my side to help and create the right opportunities for me? Not even money, if available, can make you reach anywhere.

Get Grades

on your food choices: by Dominique Dano, nutritionist, info@dominiquedano.com, 03/661046

This very minute as you read this, old cells in your body are dying and new ones are replacing them at a rate of about 50,000 cells per second. The raw material for new cell construction comes directly from the foods you eat.

‘‘You are literally what you eat.

‘‘

The raw material for new cell construction comes directly from the foods you eat. You are literally what you eat. The condition of your body today is the result of the sum total of all the food choices you’ve made in the past. The condition of your body in the future will be the sum total of all the food choices you make today. Most people take their food choices very lightly, not realizing that everything they eat has an impact on their physical condition. Even worse, some people give no thought at all to what they eat every day – they choose anything without giving any consideration to the long term consequences. Choose low grade foods and you’ll have a low grade body. Choose high grade foods and you’ll get leaner, stronger, healthier, more muscular and more energetic. The problem is, how do you know what to choose? Which foods get good grades and which foods get bad grades? When you walk down a supermarket aisle or look at a restaurant menu,

you’re faced with a dizzying array of choices. Label claims like “low cholesterol,” “low fat”, “30% less fat,” “all natural,” and “100% organic” grab your attention and seem to scream, “pick me!” But how do you really know what’s a good choice and what’s a bad choice? Worry no more, here’s a system you can use to “grade” your food choices. First, you figure out what kind of “grades” you’ve getting now, and then you start working on improving your grades. This rating system is set up in a scale like grades, because food choices don’t simply fall neatly into two categories; “pass” or “fail.” Rather, food quality can range from very poor, to poor, to fair, to good to excellent. It’s a scale or a spectrum – the same way temperature and color are spectrums. Food quality can range from highly processed with zero nutritional value on the low end (an “F”) to all natural with high nutritional value on the high end (an “A+”). You could take nearly every food type through this type of scale to “grade” it. Your task is simple: look for places in your diet where you can improve your grades…then improve them. If you have straight A’s already, the chances are extremely good that you’re in great health and in excellent shape.

ASK the Million Dollar Question!!!!!!! “A” foods are those that are NOT manmade and are NOT processed or refined. How do you know if a food is in its “natural state” or not? Simple, you ask the “million dollar question”: “Did this food come out of the ground or off the tree this way?” If the answer is yes, then it’s all-natural and it’s an A grade food.

“A” foods should make up the majority of your calories, but if you only ate A grade foods and nothing else, this means your diet would be somewhat restricted and limited (an A grade diet is a strict diet). It might also make it difficult to gain weight, because many A foods lack the caloric density required to stay in caloric surplus. That’s why it’s ok to use “B” foods like pasta or whole wheat bread sometimes especially on a muscle size-gaining program.

So how did you do? Did you pass? Did you get straight A’s? Did you flunk? Don’t worry, if your “grades” weren’t so good, it doesn’t matter. What’s in the past is done. What matters now is that you look ahead and make a concerted effort to improve your grades. Don’t feel like you must get straight A’s starting today. In fact, if you get mostly A’s & B’s, you’ll get fantastic results. Just do your absolute best to improve your grades by improving your choices, starting with your very next meal. Remember – everything you eat helps or hurts; moves you forward or backward. From a cellular and physiological standpoint, there’s no such thing as standing still or “maintenance.” One of the few things in life you can always be certain of is Change. Make sure your body is changing for the better.

“I gave everything I have last season and exhausted myself between traveling for participation with AlAnsar’s games and championships” she says. By that, The Gate University Students Magazine presents Lama as an example of a determined and devoted young talented player, who never drops her hopes despite all difficulties, and even expresses readiness to bare the challenge and aim at improving her skills to serve her national teams better, while being part of a region that still doesn’t fully believe in a young female’s capacity to take such initative and reach such levels…

Elie Rustom (USEK):

Al-Muttahed’s basketball team star…

l player for his Elie Rustom started as a basketbal with which he school’s team (Sagesse Baabda), gained many played in many championships and awards as well.

That encouraged him to pursue his path in the field. He joined the Blue Stars youngsters’ team and finally reached Al-Muttahed’s Tripoli team. “Many are the ones you encounter in the Basketball field, but rare are the ones that keep their marks in your heart” says Rustom to The Gate University Students Magazine. “I maintain great friendships currently with my colleagues in the team. And many people had a positive role in having me reach where I am today, but the biggest effect was the one of Mr. George Kelzi, who made me finally reach Al-Muttahed’s team.” Local teams and players have very good standards according to Rustom. “This reflects mostly in the high level of competition that was witnessed last season between more than two dominating teams and between many stars in different teams. Personally, I am satisfied about my performance in the

last season and I am very enthusiastic for the current one too. On the Arab scale in general, our teams are the best. We’re fine as well on the Asian level despite our failure to qualify for the World Cup.” Fans constitute a high importance for Rustom. According to him, the game’s level drops considerably if players didn’t feel they have people to share their victories and their teams’ challenges with. The problem is that some people get dragged to involve politics and sectarianism in their chants, and sometimes address insulting words to players, which is not suitable for our game. Sports are made to raise spirits and not destroy them.” Elie’s dream is to play in the NBA. He believes it’s the dream of every player. However, he insists that he is currently very comfortable in his local team, and that is thanks to its administration and his colleagues. Academically speaking, Elie is aiming to finalize his studies in Engineering at USEK University in Kaslik, in parallel with his ambitions in the field of Basket Ball.

Through the example of Elie Rustom, The Gate University Students Magazine highlights the importance of schools and universities’ role in discovering youth’s capacities and developing them at early age so they may reach and carry their national sports level higher as well.

Sexual Education

Sex out Loud Bathroom Walls Talking Back! ;) Samer Abi Chaker, MD, MPH

As we dwell in a society that swore secrecy to sexuality talk, many questions remained unanswered. Yet, as curious beings, we persist in our quest to know more. For it is through knowledge that we grow comfortable with and understand ourselves. Given the awkwardness of a sex subject, we often turn to our close friends for answers. However, before we ask that “embarrassing” (though it should not be) question, we obsessively repeat it in our heads making sure we take all precautions so that “My friend won’t get me wrong”! It also takes more time to muster the courage to ask that question, time that we often don’t have! “Are you a virgin? Do you plan on staying virgin till marriage?”

“Have you ever tried to kiss a person of the same sex?

reesome?”

Have you tried a th

seem benign questions, and most of the times you feel comfortable asking them to a friend once you’ve known him/her a bit. But how about: How should I act on our first night together?

Should I have sex or not? Should I wait or will he/she dump me? I am not sure if I like guys or girls, how would I know? And what if that close friend is not around to answer your longing question? What if that close friend is not even there? What if you don’t sufficiently trust him/her yet with these issues? Where do you turn to? Ok… There’s the internet, with loads of info available. Still, what kind of information should you trust? Where is it found??? By now, you need to know what you should do! You can’t wait anymore! It is at these moments that some would contain that question and seal their mind shut, others would try to seek answers on public interfaces, such as blogs, Q&A on sex-ed websites, or (such as our case) on bathroom walls! At least they get to retain their anonymity… When I was studying at the university, I once had a discussion with a friend on raising sexual awareness among our university students. But we thought that getting through the university administration would be very difficult. And then she said mockingly: “We should take this administration on a

trip down the girls’ bathroom, what is written on the walls could very well change their minds!” Naturally, I found this captivating, especially when compared to the writings on men’s bathrooms. It seems that in the act, Lebanese guys tend to think more deeply of the political strata in this country! And of course one should not miss the sudden ingenuity of devising curses! I still don’t get why this zest of political argumentativeness is carried to such a concealed place. I certainly won’t give this more thought, but I would definitely discuss the other writings! In case you were wondering, I never took a trip down the girls’ bathrooms, but some people were kind enough to provide me with pictures of the writings on the wall. One could argue that the issues raised may not reflect an actual feeling, but rather a sense of curiosity, or maybe it could be just for fun! But for the sake of this article, I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and I will attempt to provide as much of a complete response. Many questions were raised, and most were quite intriguing, yet we only have space for a selection of them. I will not disregard the other questions; instead I will try to keep answering them in future articles.

Alright now! First question:

Am not sure if I am a virgin or not doctor? How do I check without going to a n, defining virginity is Before answering this questio n concept of virginity important. is a thin layer of tissue covering part of the vaginal entrance, with no known function whatsoever. It usually contains some blood vessels responsible for the bleeding we note upon first intercourse. However, unlike what most people think, the hymen is not uniform among women. It exists in different forms and sizes. Some hymens are slanted, some have pores, some are thin, and some are thick. Some women are even born with a hymen that completely obliterates the vaginal entrance! (In that case as the girl gets her first period, she feels all the symptoms related to menstruation, but still she never bleeds. And upon visiting the gynecologist, the latter would artificially induce a small cut in the hymen to allow the menstrual blood out.) Other women are born with a hymen that barely surrounds the vaginal orifice, and upon first sexual intercourse, the woman is not likely to bleed. To make things even more complicated, the hymen may be worn out in childhood, through physical exercise, by masturbation (not while striking the clitoris, but in case the finger slips inside the vagina), or through tampon use. In the end, checking a woman’s hymen by a medical professional or even by any other figure is not always a reliable tool to assess a woman’s virginity, nor is bleeding upon first intercourse. So to answer that question, and based on the most common definition of virginity, I would ask

whether there was any vaginal intercourse

Sexual Education

Before moving on, I feel I have to say something about that… What if you did not bleed on first intercourse with your future husband? Should he think lesser of you? As far as I recall he married

the woman he loves for her personality, wits, and loving care. Does that all go to waste if he did not find that drop of blood on the white sheet? I certainly hope not… (What if there was a black sheet on the bed? These sheets are trendy these days :P!) Also worth mentioning, why does our society encourage men to have sex before marriage and not our women? Here’s something worth thinking about… entation. Sexual orientation is defined as “an enduring emotional, romantic, sexual, or affectional attraction toward others. It is easily distinguished from other components of sexuality including biological sex, gender identity (the psychological sense of being male or female), and the social gender role (adherence to cultural norms for feminine and masculine behavio r).”1 But determining one’s sexual orientation is not a simple matter, social and biological factors come into play. It is a process that needs time, what you are experiencing today may not hold true 5 years from now. Figuring out your sexuality is sometime a given in our society, so we don’t give it much thought. It is only when we exhibit unorthodox emotions or experiences, that we rethink what was prearranged for us. And as soon as we note something different in us we start seeking answers! My advice to you is not to rush this experie nce, give yourself time. If you feel like experiencing something new, don’t be afraid to do so. Afterall it is part of your quest to discover yourself, and if you don’t, the doubt within you will only grow bigger and bigger.

Psychological awareness

Politics:

The World’s Second Oldest Profession Sawsan Razzouk, Psychology

Nikita S. Khrushchev believed, “Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even when there is no river.” Do you ever stop to ask how this may happen? How the masses suddenly seem oblivious to key facts and focus on others? How some politicians succeed, and others do not, while they may all be promoting the same agenda?

The specific relationship between politics and social psychology has generated a plethora of enduring debates, theories and research that makes this area of study compelling and exciting. A theme frequently scrutinized is PERSUASION. Political psychology is a dynamic, growing subfield at the intersection of psychology and political science. One needn’t cross international borders to understand this field; Lebanon serves as an ideal subject for research in this domain—this, we can all agree to.

54

There are several prominent models pertaining to persuasion, one of which is Hovland’s; it deals with persuasion as a process of communicating a message composed of three components. These are the communicator, the communication, and the situation. Usually the communicator, or the source, has adopted a position and is attempting to change the attitude of the audience to be in line with his/her own. The more credible the source, the more likely he/she is to succeed in their attempt to persuade an audience. CREDIBILITY is the degree to which someone can be believed, and it depends on the source’s levels of EXPERTISE AND TRUSTWORTHINESS. For example, would you believe a candidate who has lied to the public several times? Or would you consider voting for someone who has no expertise or any type of suitable training in politics or relevant fields?

ATTRACTIVENESS AND CHARISMA play a role in the process of persuasion as well. A communicator who is charming, good-looking, neat, and sincere is more likely to persuade the audience, other things being equal. Moreover, if someone is of a certain background or identity, and ARGUES FOR WHAT SEEMS TO BE AGAINST IT, he or she will be more successful in persuading others. For example, promotion of a political agenda is more successful if the candidate is from a Republican family and has been raised as such, but runs for office as a Democrat. A powerful way to undermine the persuasive power of an argument is to attack the credibility of the source. This is called source degradation. But, what about the message itself? Characteristics of the communication (what information is conveyed) such as what arguments are employed, are deemed central as well. Two sided messages, that contain arguments for or against a position, are often used for persuasion since this is perceived as “BALANCED COMMUNICATION”. Political candidates who use this technique not only seem more credible, but also sway the public in their favor. When discussing what makes an argument weak, Margaret Thatcher stated, “I always cheer up immensely if an attack is particularly wounding because I think, well, if they attack one personally, it means they have not

a single political argument left”. She is referring to what is known as “Ad Hominem”, a very common mishap and it signifies attacking your opponent, as opposed to attacking their arguments. Also of key importance to this model are the characteristics of the situation (the circumstances in which the message is conveyed) such as whether the person receiving the message is in COMFORTABLE SURROUNDINGS.

A more recent theory about persuasion is the Elaboration Likelihood Model. According to this, there are two routes to persuasion: THE CENTRAL AND PERIPHERAL ROUTES. If the issue is important to us, we assess the presenter’s arguments via the central route. If the issue is not very important to us or if we cannot clearly hear the message, we employ the peripheral route. The more likely people are to elaborate on a message (to relate it to other things they know, which means thinking about it on a deeper level) the less likely they are to show a nonspecific positive emotional response to it. A politician will gain edge if he or she understands the difference between the two situations. If the audience is aware of the distinction, reception of a campaign will be more critical, and the politician may lose his/her advantage.

When a message is being processed peripherally, or the receiver isn’t paying close attention, cues such as SURROUNDING AUDIENCE APPLAUSE, and candidate’s attractiveness and their perceived AUTHORITY play a role in convincing the public. Also, a positive attitude may develop towards a candidate or party if the audience isn’t very involved in political campaigns, and are FREQUENTLY EXPOSED to a certain candidate or his/her message. Furthermore, IF THE CANDIDATE OR CAMPAIGN IS COUPLED WITH THINGS THAT HAVE INHERENT POSITIVE VALUE, the audience is more likely to be conditioned into holding a candidate in positive regard. For example, if a politician is seen holding babies and reading to children, or even playing with puppies, the warm and fuzzy feelings that babies and puppies bring about will be attached to the candidate in this relatively less-concerned audience.

It can be argued that most young Lebanese employ the peripheral route to persuasion when it comes to choosing which of our many political groups to endorse. Usually, a credible source (relative to the individual and his/her surroundings) sways the individual’s opinion, leading him/her to make a largely uninformed and mindless choice.

Myth busting: Contrary to a common belief, impact of high credibility source does not remain unchanged ove r time. Studies have shown that this imp act decreases while the persuasive imp act of the low credibility source increa ses. This unusual effect has become kno wn as the sleeper effect.

Joke: During his whistle-stop campaign for the presidency in 1948 , Harry Truman is reputed to have asked a fellow in the crowd before him how he was intending to vote. “Mr. Truman,” came the reply, “I wouldn’t vote for you if yours was the only name on the ballot .” Truman turned to an aid e and instructed, “Put that ma n down as doubtful.”

As Joel Augustus Rogers once said, “HE WHO HAS A MESSAGE AND NO PROPAGANDA WILL NOT GET FAR”. Though this may break the heart of many idealists, it is quite true. To communica te with the ps ychology page propose an id editor, ask a qu ea, send an em estion or ail to psycholo gy@thegate-m e.com

55

People in high-involvement conditions (who use the Central route) scrutinize the message itself, making the aforementioned cues decrease in persuasive strength. They tend to follow the candidate’s message closely and mentally evaluate his/ her arguments by constructing their own counterarguments. It follows that STRONG ARGUMENTS WILL SUCCEED IN CHANGING SUCH INDIVIDUALS’ minds more often than weak messages. For instance, when an ATTRACTIVE CANDIDATE makes an argument which is not very logical or compelling, and when the person receiving the message pays attention to it, the attractiveness of the communicator has less effect.

Arts and Talents

“A really great talent

finds its happiness in execution.” Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

In this case, Joumana El Daye a very talented student committed part of her time to designing jewelry, a true passion she decided to pursue over a year ago. Her first works started with the “scarf-necklace” inspired by the “kaffieh”, a trend set last summer. Every necklace she designs is handmade using different materials such as metal, glass, Swarovski, beads and of course scarves. Although she’s a pharmacy major at LAU Jbeil, this amateur designer did not hesitate to realize her dream. Adapting her time between her studies and her talent, Joumana was able to launch her first collection at a brunch organized at home and participated later on in the “Joaillerie Liban” exhibition at Biel and Faraya’s summer festival. That’s when things became more professional for our junior designer. With the encouragement of family and friends, Joumana was ready to go. The events she participated in, gave her the major chance to meet many fellow designers who share her same passion and consequently widen her horizons: new faces, new clients and even more inspirations.

In fact, when it comes to creating her collection her main inspiration comes from the diversified styles of her girl friends. Each one of them is unique in her own way, which reflects in the pieces she makes. That way, the collection is varied and fits the taste of many… Customized jewelry is her specialty: only one piece of each model is made. A similar piece can be, upon request, ordered but using different colors or materials; anyone can add his own touch to his jewel in order to make it as unique and as personal as possible. As for her future plans, Joumana is starting a handbag collection. A “gilet” bag with a pocket on each side: very easy to wear and yet so stylish and new! She also plans on participating in coming exhibitions and will also have points of sale at Kulte in Verdun and Kaslik so keep yourselves on the lookout.

Great things are accomplished by talented people who believe they will accomplish them” says Joumana adding: “I advise all students with a talent to use it but most importantly to believe in themselves.

Halloween nights & traditions Like almost every occasion and holiday, Halloween is becoming more and more of a “global” event that all societies celebrate annually on the 31st of October. The origins of this day are ancient and mainly religious. Throughout history, Halloween traditions varied from society to another, but finally the most common Halloween feature is: Halloween nights. In Lebanon, Halloween nights gained increasing attraction lately. This year, almost all night clubs, pubs and restaurants organized their own special Halloween celebrations, and competed in making the highest investments on decorations, DJs, effects and most importantly: Marketing and promotion! Facebook witnessed a huge boom in events promoting Halloween nights all over Lebanon, which, according to some critics “threatens to make of Halloween just another quick-moneymaking event”.

68

However, what was to some extent unusual in Lebanon in the past has invaded nightlife destination streets this year. “I was so surprised to see that amount of big young groups wearing all kinds of weird stuff and walking in the streets. It was usually hard for us to have the courage to walk in public with very eccentric Halloween costumes, but now I see it’s becoming very normal and I’m so excited to make the best of it next year. I regret not having bought myself a costume”, said Nathalie, a regular Gemayze clubber to The Gate. So the most important part seems to reside in the costumes and… the Party! A renowned psychology expert, that wished not to reveal his name,

said to The Gate University Students Magazine that the increasing attention for Halloween costumes, especially this year, in Lebanon, and especially at the youth level, reflects a kind of suppressed desires to express and experience different inside identities! “When the first idea that pops up to the mind of a teenage girl is a playboy bunny, this reflects a certain enthusiasm to express her sexual desires in a costumed way, like if she’s telling her society: I don’t have to explain, it’s not me, it’s just my costume and I’m simply playing the role. And when a young boy wears extreme scary and violentlike costumes, it somehow reflects a kind of inside frustration and desire to release stress and tension” he adds. He recalls however: “this doesn’t mean it’s always the case. We can never generalize. But we cannot deny that Halloween costumes make excellent ways to express suppressed desires and character identities for some youngsters.”

Symbols Pumpkins are the most common symbols of Halloween. Different people make use of them for Halloween decorations and often make them in the form of scary or smiling faces, sometimes including inside light and sound effects and more… Horror items are also very common ways to add thrill to Halloween costumes and decorations such as: scarecrows, skulls, monsters, skeletons, vampires, demons, bats etc…

Halloween: An occasion for everyone Although Halloween parties are mostly restricted to young adults, Halloween traditions extend to reach all sectors of society and all ages: from little babies, to children, youngsters and even old people. Children mostly enjoy the funny games that come along, especially including surprising visits to neighbors’ homes, school celebrations and games, etc… Lately as well, people started buying costumes even for their pets, mostly dogs and cats, to complete the overall Halloween atmosphere everywhere around them. World renowned celebrities also compete to appear with the funkiest possible Halloween costumes and to organize the most exciting Halloween nights, just like they compete to have the classiest appearance at the annual Cannes Film Festivals. So as it seems, Halloween is gaining more and more attention in Lebanon, the Middle East and the World, and the years to come promise more and more creativity in Halloween parties…

TAMA NNA AND PERSI L turni ng 3 childr en’s lives aroun

Sponsorship that draws a smile on a child’s face

Beirut, November 12th, 2009 –Three children, diagnosed with critical illnesses, are smiling every week, thanks to the ongoing Persil sponsorship of Tamanna, a non-profit organization with the sole aim to turn children’s tears into laughter. In an event held to celebrate this continuing union, heads from Tamanna and Persil announced their joint achievements to date. Persil, as part of their social responsibility pledge, has been the official sponsor for Tamanna in 2009, managing to raise, through direct donations alone, over 150,000,000 L.L. this year.

72

“Persil have built not only a partnership but a spirited bond that grows after each granted wish and after each comforting smile,” said Diala Fil Rayess, President of Tamanna. Plans for 2010 are even greater, with the ultimate aim set at realizing one sick child’s dream per day. Persil has conceptualized a way to involve the public to donate to a selfless cause, thus launching the ‘1000 L.L.’ campaign in September 2009, which

will continue into the coming year. This campaign entails that with each pack of Persil sold, 1000 LBP are donated to Tamanna. The objective is to raise 300,000,000L.L. “Our venture does not stop there,” said Philip Kaady, Marketing Manager at Henkel. “To strengthen our support for Tamanna and to involve the Lebanese consumer in this endeavor, we have launched the ‘1000 L.L.’ campaign that is on-going,” he confirmed. Through these donations, children being treated in Lebanon from an array of nationalities have had their dreams made into reality. Tamanna works with hospitals throughout Lebanon such as Saint Jude’s Children’s Cancer Center, Hotel Dieu, Makassed and Rafic Hariri University Hospital amongst many others. “It all began in December 2005. We thought of ways to create a movement whereby making children smile would be an ongoing venture,” explained Rayess. “We thought Tamanna – with the mission to turn tears into laughter,” she added.

Of the most memorab le dreams realized, are the group of eight children who were flo wn to Euro Disney to spend four magical days there, and another chi ld whose dream was to watch English Lea gue Football Team Manchester Unite d play live, found himself amongst the raving fans in the English stadium. “We at Henkel are comm itted to continue working with Tammana,” Kaady affirmed, “and are determined to make every ailing chi ld’s dream a reality.” Persil’s ‘1000 L.L.’ campa ign, allows the general Lebanese public to give to children and see the m smile. Both Persil and Tamanna hav e pledged their ongoing support, to ult imately turn children’s tears into lau ghter, giving them a reason to believ e.

Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent.

Horoscope

Horoscopes Aries The Gate sees travel for you Aries! December is filled with chances to travel, the perfect antidote for a lifestyle that may have been filled with routine lately. Your first trip may be taken within days of the full moon December 2 and may take you to a place close by. In case you are groaning at the thought of a work-related business trip with an overnight stay in a budget business motel, that’s not at all what seems to be what you’d experience. This full moon will signal Jupiter in your house of friendship and fun, and when Jupiter is involved, luxury can’t be far behind. It seems you will love your accommodations and your experiences, so if you can travel quickly to see a friend (or with a friend), do so!

Taurus This month The Gate predicts that you will be focused on making money, raising money, saving money and overall, managing money (Busy tonight Taurus?). The new moon, December 2, will bring a money matter to culmination. You will either write a check or get one - or both. Fortunately, Saturn will be in a stabilizing angle to the full moon, so if you should need more cash and would like to find a part time or full time job, you should be able to get it.

Gemini Once a year we get a full moon in our own sign, and for you, dear Gemini, it’s due December 2. Something important to you is now reaching fruition. Matters will clarify, and you may need to make a decisive move about what you find. If any matter has puzzled you, this full moon’s light should help you understand in a flash what you must do. Saturn will add its gifts of comforting stability - if you are making a decision, it won’t be temporary, but one that keeps you feeling secure for a long time.

Cancer In December, Cancer, The Gate says relax. Others will take the lead. You don’t have to always be in charge, and in actuality, it may be a relief to hand over the reins to a trusted partner once in a while. The full moon on December 2 will find you feeling in need of rest and privacy. If you feel a cold coming on, take life a little slower, and if possible sleep a bit later over the weekend of December 5-6. If you do take good care of yourself, by Sunday night you should be feeling better and by Monday, you’d be on top of the world again

Leo Leo! The planets are acting crazy! On one hand, you have Mars in Leo, making you courageous, energetic, and ready to conquer the world. You’ve been moving at the speed of light since mid-October, but now you must allow some of that power and light that you created to carry you forward into March on its own. Mars is about to settle down for a nap on December 20 until March 10. Any ventures started with Mars retrograde would lack power and punch, so have faith that by sitting back you won’t lose anything. Just the opposite: By slowing your pace and allowing time for feedback, you’ll actually perfect your plan.

Virgo The month starts out with excellent news about your career lucky Virgo! The full moon, December 2, will fall in your tenth house of honors and achievement, and could bring reward for months of hard work. When you get word of how enthusiastically your superiors and critics view your performance, you will be thrilled. Virgo is a modest sign, so you don’t spend a lot of time tooting your own horn. This time others may do it for you. Watch for news to come to you within four days of December 2.

78

Just about every part of life is about light up this month, Libra so get ready to be busy, but there will be cross currents due from several planets too, so not everything will be as it appears. You will have a full moon, a new moon, and a total eclipse - a lot of activity for one little month, and each will kick up some dust. On top of that, two planets, Mercury and Mars, will take a nap and go retrograde, so we will all have to make do without the gifts that these two planets usually provide us. As a result of all this, you will need to plan to go slowly in December. Fortunately, things usually do quiet down at holiday time, so if you decide to put off making a major life decision for the time being, others will understand.

Scorpio The Gate advises that you take it slow and easy in December, dear Scorpio. Let go, and let others call you if they need you. Nothing earth shattering will get done in December because Mars and Mercury will be out of phase. While this spells “less progress,” it also spells more time for fun and rest, and that’s not so bad, is it?

Sagittarius Sagittarius! The Gate wishes you a very Happy Birthday! It’s birthday month, and you’re eager for the New Year. This hasn’t been the easiest year, particularly if you were born at the end of your sign, from December 14 to 22. Saturn was bossing you around, and Uranus was playing havoc, but by December, both are behaving themselves and are ready to give you a break

Capricorn Listen up Capricorn…At the very start of the month, you will be busy getting a project ready to ship out the door. The full moon December 2 will fall in your workaday sector, and team energy from co-workers and underlings will be high. You may not have to do all elements of the project yourself, and if you do have help, everyone will work together quite seamless

Aquarius Aquarius, The Gate sees hearts in your eyes! November may prove to be special when it comes to love. A bright and tender full moon on December 2 in your fifth house could bring on an enchanting romantic episode. Something seems to be coming to a culmination when it comes to matters of the heart, and this could happen any time in the first week of December.

Pisces Dear Pisces, December starts the month off on a wonderful note. Uranus has been retrograde since July 1, but will suddenly bolt forward with enormous energy on December 1. You’ll feel the difference and be suddenly filled with optimism, too. The Gate says watch projects and relationships jump to life. It will be like a strong gust of wind suddenly blew in your window and lit the inner you with a million magical points of light. Uranus is the planet of electricity and you’ll feel very lit up, for sure.
