WELCOME We have a wonderful packed season of performances here at The Garage in the new year. From the 5 star Feed by Theatre Témoin (p.7), to a new play by The Whiting’s on the Wall called There’s No Place Like Cromer (p.8), this play came through our Scratch Night process. If you're an artist interested in developing work, the next Scratch Night is on Friday 21 February (p.5). We see the return of The Canada Boys by fEAST theatre (p.10); which went down a storm when it was here last time. I’m pleased to welcome back the brilliantly funny, award-winning comedian John Kearns with Double Take and Fade Away (p.8).

I am so pleased that we’ll see our participants out and about performing, with our young musicians performing at The Waterfront on Sunday 22 March (p.11) and the young dancers at Epic Studios on Sunday 29 March (p.12); it's really beneficial for them to gain new skills working in new spaces. If you’re looking to start something new in 2020 we have termly classes and drop in sessions, from ballet to Cardio Funk, there’s something fun to take part in; our term kicks off on Monday 6 January (p.22).

A comedy spoken word show about gender, the media and not fitting any of the boxes, full of explosive movement, original songs and kickass video projection. Edalia Day is a banjo-wielding, poetry slam-winning, trans warrior, taking on the world one troll at a time.

Too Pretty To Punch is a hilarious and uplifting journey through what it means to be trans in 21st Century Britain. It reminds all of us (regardless of who we are) of the power of celebrating our existence.

FRIDAY 14 FEBRUARY 7.30PM The Birkett & Fisk duo made its debut at Newcastle Jazz Cafe in summer 2016 and has already gained rave reviews and capacity crowds at the venues they have visited – in fact their first gig was featured as one of the editor’s picks in The Guardian. While working together in popular Gypsy Jazz Quartet Djangologie, James Birkett and Emma Fisk discovered their shared love of Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang and in the form of this duo are bringing that musical passion to jazz audiences.

James Birkett (guitar) is one the country’s most acclaimed guitarists and has worked with many major jazz soloists from the UK and the USA. Emma Fisk (violin) as well as performing as a duo with James, leads her own quartet, Hot Club du Nord and is a founder member of Gypsy Jazz Quartet Djangologie. She has appeared as guest violinist at jazz festivals throughout the UK. TICKETS: £12

SATURDAY 22 FEBRUARY 7.30PM Tolerance Manoeuvre are the trio of Joseph Stokes (vocals & guitar), Sarah Woolfenden (trumpet & vocals) and Steve Arnold (cello & vocals). They create spacious soundscapes of textured and atmospheric music. They have performed in the UK and Europe, including several times in Greece.

The band's debut album, In Memory, was released in 2015 on the Flashback Records label. This tour will launch the second Tolerance Manoeuvre album.

hymn is a group from Norwich with a core trio of Chris Dowding (trumpets & electronics), George McKay (double bass) and David Ross (percussion & electronics). They play spacious improvisations informed by simple composed material. They also play with guests and in improvised configurations, and this gig is part of a tour with vinyl improviser Graham Dunning.

Exploring the pull between London and home for a rural Norfolk girl, this is a new play developed with support from The Garage, All-In Productions and funding from Arts Council England.

The show is a celebration of Norfolk and its weird and wonderful characters.

Set entirely in Liverpool Street Station, join Doris for a magical journey of self-acceptance where everything is not quite as it seems…

THURSDAY 19 & FRIDAY 20 MARCH 7.30PM Back again by popular demand and with its original cast, Rob John’s much-loved play sets off on its third regional tour. Set in 1912, The Canada Boys is based on the true story of a group of workers at J & J Colman. The famous mustard company, concerned by rising unemployment in Norwich, offered some of its employees the opportunity of a new life on the other side of the Atlantic. The Canada Boys is the story of two brothers who’d never ventured further west than Wymondham, but who dared to imagine a new life for themselves in ‘The British Dominion of Canada’.

This funny, sad and thought-provoking play which resonates with Norfolk voices and Norwich locations examines the relationship between a progressive company and its workers before the First World War. The Canada Boys is a play about ambition, love, duty, family and mustard.

SATURDAY 25 APRIL 7.30PM Mustard Theatre Company was founded in 2004, and has evolved into one of the leading amateur theatre companies touring East Anglia. Their 2018 production of One Man, Two Guvnors, was their most successful to date, playing to more than 1000 people over 8 venues.

Set amidst the social turbulence of 60s’ London the play follows the story of Suzy, a blind woman, who left alone in her apartment becomes embroiled with a group of conmen hatching an elaborate scam. As the tension mounts, Suzy is left to fend for herself but with the phoneline cut dead and the house plunged into darkness, can she outwit the murderous visitors? Wait Until Dark, made into a film starring Audrey Hepburn in 1967 and is often ranked as one of the top 100 scariest films of all time.

Roll up! Roll up! The circus is coming back to The Garage. Journey deep into the jungle in this latest theatrical adventure.

The jungle is being turned upside down with the arrival of a small human child. Mowgli is being taught how to survive in the jungle by Baloo.

Will Baloo’s lessons ensure Mowgli’s safety?

There are mischievous monkeys causing mayhem in the jungle, the snake Kaa wants man cub for dinner and whose are those red eyes peering out of the bushes… is it the evil tiger Sheer Khan?

My First Circus: Lessons of the Jungle Book is an interactive musical adventure where the whole family can play with Mowgli and his friends.

We’re teaming up with the Young Norfolk Arts Trust to offer a fantastic free opportunity for young people who are interested in working backstage on the technical side of music and performance events.

Join us for two weeks of fantastic fun putting together a production of Alice In Wonderland.

We are looking for people aged 14-21 who want to learn and develop sound, lighting and set up skills for music/performance events.

You will work with our wonderful creative team to put on a great show for family and friends.

FOCUS ON BALLET

CONTEMPORARY

WHAT IS IT? Ballet is a highly formalised style of dance, with steps and gestures following specific positions of the arms, feet and body. Characterised by its grace, intricacy, precision and its vocabulary based on French terminology.

WHAT IS IT? Contemporary is an expressive style of dance that pulls on elements from different dance genres such as ballet, jazz and lyrical.

WHY CHOOSE IT? Ballet is a great confidence booster and will allow you to explore your creativity. The structured approach of ballet training helps to develop physical and spatial awareness, motor skills, co-ordination and control of movement through choreography and exercises.

AS SEEN IN‌ There are many well-known ballets including The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and The Magic Flute. On screen ballet can be seen in the movies Billy Elliot and Ballerina, and the TV series Angelina Ballerina.

WHY CHOOSE IT? Contemporary dance encapsulates the meaning of embodiment by connecting the mind and body through fluid movements.

Contemporary dance is perfect for those seeking to have a creative input into choreography and working in collaboration with other dancers and the tutor.

FOCUS ON STREET DANCE

TAP & MODERN

WHAT IS IT? Street Dance is the umbrella term of a range of styles that originated from the “streets” of New York. It incorporates movements and techniques from other classical styles, like ballet and contemporary, and adds a modern twist to them.

Street Dance includes elements from Breakdance, Hip-Hop and Commercial.

WHAT IS IT? Our tap and modern class is a combined class. Tap is a type of dance characterised by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. This includes a range of basic steps such as shuffles, toe taps, heel drops, springs, ball changes and many more. Modern is a free expressive style of dancing that developed in the early 20th century as a reaction to classical ballet.

This includes movements such as isolations, stretches, travelling steps such as leaps and runs and a combination of all skills together through creative tasks.

WHY CHOOSE IT? Street Dance is a massive confidence booster as it is energetic and able to be adapted to the individual. Set to all the latest music as well as being nostalgic with the classics, it creates a real fun and friendly environment where someone can really explore who they are as well as what they enjoy.

AS SEEN IN… Street Dance can often be seen in music videos such as 1, 2 Step by Ciara, the popular film series Step Up, viral dance videos and backing choreography for touring performances.

WHY CHOOSE IT? Both styles are great for rhythm and co-ordination, isolating body parts and performing in a theatrical way to a range of music from pop hits to classical tap soundtracks to aid understanding of timing and musicality. Creativity is encouraged as part of the Modern style for participants to add their own ideas to their performance.

AS SEEN IN… Modern dance can be seen on the stage in musicals like Fame and often in music videos.

Tap dance can be seen in musicals such as 42nd Street and Stomp.

PRE-SCHOOL: 3 MONTHS TO 4 YEARS At The Garage we believe it’s never too early to start your creative journey. Our pre-school classes are a perfect introduction to the performing arts for little ones.

Spring term starts on Monday 6 January.

The 3 months - 3 years classes allow you to engage in music, singing and movement, giving you time to bond and play creatively with your little one as they start to explore the world around them.

The classes for ages 3-4 in Creative Dance, Tap & Modern or Street Dance will help build their confidence in a supportive environment, developing physicality, musicality and simple techniques.

NATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE INTAKE AUDITIONS Are you a young performer aged 14-25? The National Youth Theatre is searching for talented young performers and creatives across the UK. Take part in a 3-hour audition preparation workshop followed by a 1-2-1 audition with a monologue of your choice.

Successful auditionees will take part in a 2-4 week summer course in London and become members of the National Youth Theatre until they turn 26. They will also have access to professional castings, perform in national tours and West End shows, gain free creative leadership and inclusion training and more. Be part of something bigger.

We’re looking for the next rising stars. BYMT offers young performers the opportunity to work with exciting composers, established directors and innovative movement specialists.

ARTS AWARD TRAINING Arts Award training courses cover everything you need to know about delivering, running and successfully completing the Arts Award. Adviser training enables you to support and assess young people through Arts Award within your organisation.

Arts Award supports people aged up to 25, inspiring them to connect with and take part in the wider arts world. Through Arts Award, young people can gain a qualification enabling them to progress into further education and employment.

BSL SIGN CAFÉ How do you learn to sign? It’s all about practice!

When you are on a formal BSL course from Level 1-6 practicing your signing in a relaxed, informal and sociable environment with d/Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deafened and native BSL speakers will have a positive effect on your learning, and help you to apply your knowledge through interaction.

Free, drop in at Locomotion Café here at The Garage. All are welcome, regardless of previous experience.

There are a range of hot and cold drinks available in the café.

Sign Café runs Tuesdays 10-11AM, starting from 7 January and running fortnightly.

SUPPORT SUPPORT US The Garage is a charity with a mission to enable children and young people from disadvantaged circumstances to have equal access to enjoy and develop through watching and taking part in performing arts.

Through our Big Breaks bursary scheme, we support vulnerable young people to gain skills and confidence, to make new friends and gain an increased sense of belonging. In 2017/18 we engaged with 1,472 participants in challenging circumstances, delivering over 2,000 hours of one-to-one support.
