Welcome to The GAP Festival 2022
estival #GAPF
The Goring and Streatley Festival, to give us our proper name, is a registered charity (no. 1161360) whose aim is to promote the arts in all forms via a Festival. It is organised by a group of amazing local volunteers who give their time to create and put on this varied programme of events for you to enjoy. When I took over the role of Artistic Director for the GAP Festival, I knew it would be an exciting challenge. Having been forced to abandon the proposed 2020 programme, this year marks our 4th Festival and we come full circle, embracing the Queen’s unique achievement of a Platinum Jubilee. This year, we decided to focus on celebrating our talented, diverse and glorious community. We therefore offer a rich and varied programme, providing creative opportunities to encourage us all to get back out and come together again. You will find the return of some firm favourites and many new and exciting additions, such as opera, art installations and daily fitness and calm sessions. Many events are FREE and throughout the Festival, we aim for inclusivity and affordability. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to the Trustees who have been so supportive and encouraging, as I settle into my new tenure. I am sure you all join me in extending gratitude to every one of the hard working planners, organisers, creatives and marshals who make this wonderful Festival possible. On behalf of the GAP Festival Team, we wish you a very warm welcome to the 2022 programme and we look forward to seeing you, as we enjoy all the talent, beauty and love of this precious community. GINNY AVERY | ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, GAP FESTIVAL 2022.

Lighting the Jubilee Beacon
The start of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. We hope everyone will join in to celebrate this unique occasion in British history marking seven decades of the Queen’s reign, with this traditional beacon lighting ceremony. The Goring and Streatley Concert Band and a choir will lead the singing in a special event, during which the Jubilee Beacon will be lit, we hope, at the top of the tower of St Thomas’ Church. To coincide with the lighting of Jubilee Beacons throughout the country and the Commonwealth, choirs will be singing ‘Song for the Commonwealth’, written specially for this night. The song will be sung at exactly 9.45pm local time, in whichever country people are in on 2nd June 2022. Sponsored by

This will be a unique event and fun for everyone – and possibly put Goring and Streatley in the Guinness Book of World Records! Following the Jubilee Praise family service, a 1km-long Street Party and Jubilee Lunch will start, and the two High Streets and the river bridge will be closed to traffic at 12.30pm until 6pm. Over 500 trestle tables will be set out in a continuous line from the railway bridge in Goring to Streatley traffic lights, in preparation for what may be the longest Jubilee Street Party in the country. We will join the two villages and straddle two counties, as we did in 2012 during our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, when over 4,000 people attended. This year our celebrations will be even better and a sunny day has been ordered! Your Land: How You Can Help Save The Planet
INCLU WELCO DES A ME DR INK
This event is ideal for everyone who cares about our local environment. Discover ways to improve and preserve the habitats in the Goring Gap and reverse the seemingly inexorable decline in the biodiversity of our fauna and flora. The Keynote speaker, Dr Niall McCann, is an internationally recognised front line conservation biologist specialising in endangered species research around the world. Niall, also a National Geographic Explorer, was introduced by Sir David Attenborough, when featuring on his BBC TV ‘Perfect Planet’ series last year, as one of the three world-leading authorities on conservation. Dr McCann will give an illustrated talk on his adventures and work, both abroad and in the UK. In the second half of the programme, Dr McCann will chair an ‘Ask the Experts’ session when the audience can question an assembled panel of distinguished local scientists and land users to find out how land use and Global thinking can translate to local actions that you can take on your land, and in your garden, to make a real difference. Illyria Outdoor Theatre present Peter Pan
GORING CARE HOMES
Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, Adapted by Oliver Gray Wendy Darling is certain she saw the face of a boy at her bedroom window 3 floors up – yet no-one believes her. So who can blame her when she agrees to fly away to the idyllic Neverland with him? But is Neverland as perfect as it seems? Or will the evil Captain Hook and his band of pirates kill Peter and rule over it themselves? Peter Pan was first performed by Illyria in 1997. It has been performed outdoors many times since by many different companies. But Illyria’s 2022 production will be the first to feature REAL flying! Bring your own seating, rug and picnic from 4pm. Suitable for all ages 5+

Church & State: Uneasy Bedfellows?
‘Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?’ asked King Henry II and days later his nemesis Thomas Becket was murdered. St Thomas of Canterbury in Goring is named in honour of him. The year 2020 marked a dual anniversary: 850 years since his death and 800 since a shrine was created for his body in Canterbury Cathedral. How do Church and state co-exist today? A special and unique event, this conversation is between the Bishop of Oxford (a member of the House of Lords) and a former British Prime Minister!

‘Chinese Boxing’ by Mark Kitto
Can China and Britain get along? This entertaining one-man show tackles the question from both sides, no punches pulled. Renowned actor Mark Kitto plays Sir Claude MacDonald, ambassador to Peking during the 1900 Boxer Uprising. Sir Claude gives a lecture to the Goring and Streatley Asiatic Society. He discusses China and Britain ‘today’ – that’s 1912 for him, the year of the foundation of the Republic of China, a rising world power. Sound familiar? Sir Claude ‘takes you to Peking’, where what you hear from the Chinese side will challenge your view of the past… and the present. Post Show Q&A.
