Massive changes to University course structure from September Luke Baynes Senior reporter

As of September this year, the University of Portsmouth is planning on changing the length of the academic year.

Those attending the UoP in September 2012 will be expected to begin lectures two weeks earlier than the previous years.

This will mean that lectures will take place across a 12-week semester.

The Christmas break will consist of three weeks before lectures begin again for a further 12 weeks.

There will be no exams fol-

lowing the three week Christmas break and this previous inter-semester assessment period will be added to the lecture period creating another 12 week semester.

The Easter break will be the same length, however, it will be followed by a six week semester dedicated to exams and other assessments.

Undergraduate students will continue to study 120 credits in each year, but most units of study will be worth 20 credits, instead of the previous combination of 10 and 20 credit units.

Most 20 credit units will be spread across the two teaching

periods, but some will be completed in a single semester.

Although exams will take place at the end of the academic year, many units will require other coursework-based assessments throughout the year.

An email was sent with this information back in October and all students should have been told this information at the start of the academic year.

The changes are a result of student feedback and a University spokesperson said: “All of these changes are designed to improve and simplify the way in which we deliver our courses to you.”

Students take part in the competition Portsmouth News Jasmine Rapson

Pupils from primary and secondary schools across the city took to the stage recently to compete in an annual street dance competition, which took place at the Kings Theatre.

Promotion of healthy living is prominent in today’s media, especially for young people.

This competition was a good opportunity for students around Portsmouth to try something different, and promote a healthy lifestyle. The students took part in regular dance lessons and were given the opportunity to perform in front of family and friends.

350 pupils were coached by students from the University

as part of the Sport Volunteer scheme.

The pupils were taught street dance for nine weeks by University students, and this allowed the students to use their sporting talents to help members of the local community.

Although there have been large cuts to schools’ allowances this year, the competition has been bigger and better than the past five years it has been running for, thanks to the help from Portsmouth city council.

Pupils from Court Lane Junior School took home first prize in the primary school competition and pupils from Admiral Lord Nelson School won first prize in the secondary competition.

Carly–Anne said: “We were pleased to get so many schools and pupils involved in the competition, especially this year when there is even more of a drive to encourage local young people to take part in sport with all the excitement building towards the Olympics.

“It was a hugely successful event enjoyed by all and the University students were very proud to see how well the pupils performed. Dancing is a great way to engage youngsters and I hope this event will encourage more children to take up this fun form of exercise.”

Olympic-inspired art exhibition to be held in May George McCann

Opening on 7th May, the Cascade shopping centre which can be found on Commercial road will be holding an Olympic-inspired art exhibition, showcasing some of the best artwork from local people.

This exhibition will celebrate the seven values of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Games: respect; excellence; friendship; courage; determination; inspiration; equality. All of the artwork shown will be representing one or more of these values.

UPSU has won £1,000 of funding from the NUS, through LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games), to organise and host a Modern Olympics exhibition.

As a result they are asking local schools to submit any artwork about the history of the Olympics and Paralympics that convey any of these seven values. The aim is to encourage more young pupils to learn about the history and ethics of the games.

All students are invited to take part in the event and entries need to be submitted by 18th April.

The exhibition will be ending on 10th May and optimistically will get people in the patriotic spirit of the games which start mid-August.

Godfrey Atuahene Junior wins UPSU Presidency Anthony Strzalek Head of News

Huge crowds turned out at the Waterhole Bar in the Union to see the announcement of the next five sabbatical officers.

In a hotly contested battle for the Presidency, Godfrey Atuahene Junior (current VP Activites) pipped Milly Youngman (current VP Education and Democracy) to the post.

19 candidates applied for the five positions with voting and the majority of campaigning taking place between Monday 12th and Thursday 15th of March.

VP Activities was the most popular position, with a total of six candidates vying for the sabbatical role.

Grant Clarke came out on top to become the Union’s VP Activites, with Ahsan Karim, Alex Vince, Pat MacMahon, Liam Ryder, and Gregor Engelmann missing out respectively over six rounds of voting.

The new VP Education and Democracy will be Enzo Rossi after beating two other candidates, Luke Franks who took second and Sam Bogg coming third. Enzo Rossi took 1,976 of the 4,439 votes.

VP Sports, also contested by three candidates, was won by Cat Redding, beating Stephen Dancey and Olusegun Olufehinti.

Finally, VP Welfare and Community will now be taken up by Perry Taylor, who beat Becky Gardner, Suzi Loxton, Kirsty Loveridge and Chris Elley for the position over four rounds of voting.

The vote as to whether or not to stay affiliated with the NUS received a majority ‘yes’ vote of 76%. All the results were announced by current President, Amy Baker.

The new sabbaticals will come into office on 1st July, when the current sabbaticals leave their posts officially.

Last year 4,122 students voted in the elections. The voting target for this year was 4,200 but that was smashed with 5,027 valid votes in this year’s elections.

Question Time events took place from the 5th to 9th March, giving students the opportunity to quiz the candidates and their manifesto’s.

Each sabbatical officer will earn a minimum of £18,000 a year and their experience as sabbatical officers will help to boost their future employability prospects.

The previous sabbatical officers were: President: Amy Baker; VP Education and Democracy: Godfrey Atuahene Junior; VP Activities: Milly Youngman; VP

Sports: Dan Black and VP Welfare and Community: Stephen Roberts.

The election results night began at 7.30pm in the Waterhole bar, in the Union building and ended just after 10.30pm.

Performances include d singing, juggling, a video of current VP Sports Dan Black singing in a pink dress and tiara and candidates videos.

Over 2,000 votes were casted online which is almost double last year’s online votes and the University bus was where the

fewest votes were cast.

Business students made up almost 30% of the voters, the highest from any faculty.

Technology faculty students were among the fewest votes, making up just over 10% of the total and the majority of the voters were first year students.

Postgraduate students cast just 6% of the votes, compared to 94% by undergraduates, despite postgraduate students making up 16% of the student population.

African Caribbean Society reach out for the Congo Lauren O’Neil

A meeting for help campaign, ‘Caring for the Congo’, was held on 7th March in Portland building in order to raise awareness of the ongoing war in the Congo and the hardship that the Congolese people have been experiencing for the past 125 years.

‘Caring for the Congo’ aims to support and help in any way possible and to also raise aware-

ness of the current crisis.

The meeting was held by Tolu Ige, the president of The University of Portsmouth’s African Caribbean Society, who presented a number of heart-wrenching documentaries depicting the bloodshed and violence that is prevalent throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo at the moment.

Currently, hundreds of thousands of people are victims of

famine, theft, murder and brutal rape due to a war that has been going on for over 15 years. he death toll is nearly surpassing that of the Holocaust, with an estimated 5.4 million people dying as a result of the conflict.

The event took off with a documentary created by the charity organisation ‘Women 4 Women International’, which introduced the audience to the traumatic events that the Congolese peo-

ple are experiencing.

Later, a video called “Masika-Unwatchable” (available on YouTube) was shown to the audience and consisted of an interview with a Congolese woman who discussed the horrifying events she had experienced and witnessed.

A number of alarming statistics were revealed during the meeting including that there are currently 200,000 rape survi-

vors in the Congo, which makes it, statistically, the worst place in the world for women to live.

Also, on average, 20% of children born in Congo will die before their 5th birthday.

Protests as Conservative MP attends Pyramids debate Students protest as Universities Minister David Willetts attends Politics & Debating Society debate Dan Chesterton Editor

Conservative MP for Havant and Universities Minister David Willetts had to enter a student run debate through the back entrance after he was met with students protesting against education cuts.

The ‘big 3’ debate held on 2nd March at the Portsmouth Pyramids aimed to provide students with the opportunity to hear from representatives from Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrats on a range of issues.

Willetts was faced with around 20 protesters, including students and public sector workers, as he tried to enter the building. Protesters shouted chants such as “Bring back EMA, make the greedy bankers pay”, “where’s your workfare gone”

and “Tory scum”.

During the debate topics such as the NHS, unemployment, education and the economy were discussed.

Also attending were Liberal Democrat Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackso, Chairman of Portsmouth Conservative Future Luke Franks, Greg Dawson representing Liberal Democrat Students, and President of Labour Students Portsmouth Alex Armstrong.

The event was hosted by the Politics and Debating Society in conjunction with Portsmouth City Council’s ‘Take Part’ programme.

Luke Franks, who ran for VP Education and Democracy in the UPSU elections, criticised the “intimidating atmosphere” at the protest during his question time event and said the “tory scum” chants alienated Conservative students.

Volunteers plan fundraising for annual RAG week Alex Delaney

The Students’ Union’s Raising and Giving (RAG) team are putting on over a week’s worth of entertainment for students in the aid of charity for the annual RAG week.

The events will begin on Saturday 17th March and will go on until Sunday 25th March, with different events supporting different charities.

The first event, on Saturday 17th March is a twelve hour Poker Tournament in aid of the Make A Wish Foundation.

The tournament will start at 10am in Third Space at the Students’ Union, lasting until 10pm and the tournament ‘buy-in’ is £5.

RAG will be joining forces with the Poker Society to offer the best tables and chips and there will be prizes for the players who leave with the most chips.

Also, because it’s St. Patricks Day, participants are encour-

aged to wear green clothing.

The second event, on Sunday 18th March, is called ‘LOST.’ In aid of the NSPCC, teams of three will be dropped off in a secret location and the first team to make it back to the University without spending a penny will win.

Recruits will have to pay a £10 deposit to get dropped off at a secret location and each group will have a £100 sponsorship target that goes straight to charity. The winners of this popular event will be rewarded with a variety of prizes.

Also, on Monday 19th, RAG will be holding their Assassin’s Guild event which will consist of students being given a target and having to ‘hunt them down’ through the course of the day.

For just a £1 entry fee, participants will receive a photo of their target and some information about where their target might be. Each person involved will be given a t-shirt to wear which will make it obvious that

they are taking part in the game.

Participants can continue to look for their target until 9pm; prizes will be given for first kill, last kill, closest to 3pm kill and more! Profit from this event will go to the British Heart Foundation.

On Wednesday 21st, RAG will also be hosting a ‘slave’ auction at Highlight, Gunwharf. This will involve four participants being auctioned off to the highest bidder and being their slave for a day. The ‘slaves’ can be made

to do house chores, shopping and almost anything else! Profits from this event will go to Sports Relief.

Friday 23rd sees RAG host a Million Pound Drop night. Tickets are just £1 and participants will have the chance to win up to £1000! All proceeds after the prize is given will go to Practical Action.

The RAG Skydive will take place on Saturday 24th. This will see recruits taking a minibus to Netheravon, Salisbury

for his involvement in a protest against Willetts when he spoke at a lecture at Cambridge in November.

The unnamed PhD English student was found to have breached disciplinary rules.

Both Cambridge Students’ Union and NUS have criticised the decision.

NUS President, Liam Burns, said: “Peaceful protest is fundamental to any democratic nation and when no laws are broken there is no reason for such a disproportionate punishment.”

“I’m sure Mr Willetts himself would agree that universities should be encouraging the voicing of critical opinions rather than attempting to silence them.

The government’s changes to higher education have been profound and no-one should be surprised that students will take issue with them.”

“It’s clear that this decision does not reflect the wishes of the student body and has unfairly singled out an individual to make an example of.”

and spending the day jumping out of a plane! The deposit is £50 and the fundraising target is £275. The profits from this event will go to UNICEF UK. The final event held on Sunday 25th March will be the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile.

RAG will be there to cheer on runners and assist in any way possible.

Joe Rejek, President of the UPSU RAG team, said: “The most highly anticipated events are LOST and the Skydive which are generating a lot of interest.

Last year, LOST was our most successful event and the Skydive is always popular!”

The events in RAG week are open to everyone.

Mr Rejek added: “People can get involved by signing up to our events. We help our recruits through every stage of the fundraising process so for most, it would simply be a case of showing their interest and paying a small deposit when they signup.”

Police launch ‘short word, long sentence’ rape campaign Luke Baynes Senior Reporter

A new hard-hitting campaign against sexual violence has been set up by Hampshire police. The campaign is called ‘Don’t cross the line’ and aims to teach people what chain of events can lead to rape, dispel common myths and provide information that will enable people to make the right decisions.

The Hampshire police have said that previous national campaigns have focused on young women but this campaign aims to focus on young men in order to make them understand what constitutes as sexual violence and what classifies as rape, hence ‘Where do you draw the line?’

The campaign aims to reduce incidents of rape by ensuring that men understand the need to gain active consent before they have sex.

victims and perpetrators of serious sexual offences and often it’s the case that they know each other. Data shows that experiences of sexual assault and

pressure to have sex can start well before the age of 16. It is becoming increasingly important to equip young people with the confidence, understanding

and resilience to withstand this pressure and protect themselves from abusive relationships.”

Some of the statistics are shocking and disturbing. For ex-

ample, most victims are women aged 16-24 and most rapes are committed by men aged 16-24.

21% of sexual assaults are committed by current or ex partners, the majority of sexual assaults happen on the weekend and nearly half of victims will know their rapist.

The Hampshire police will be visiting schools and other academic establishments using such material as the DVD ‘Rape: short word long sentence’ and other tailored materials for a range of age groups.

Students sidelined in recent parking scheme consultation Vanessa Azzopardi Deputy Head of News

Portsmouth City Council has omitted students from the decision making process for a new car parking scheme. The consultation took place last year and resulted in a change in the parking system in November.

Students that are residing in certain areas now have to register their car to their Portsmouth address to be able to apply for a permit to park outside their house.

Portsmouth City Council website states: “The schemes are requested by residents through their councillors or neighbourhood forums. Once there is enough support for such a scheme, we conduct a survey of residents’ views, which asks how they would prefer their scheme to operate. The results are then analysed and entered onto a database.”

Jo Ellcome, Group Administrator of Transport and Environment at the Portsmouth City Council said: “Permanent residents in areas of the city campaign for residents parking

schemes due to parking problems caused by commuters, local employees and parking by students (often several per household).”

Students were not included in this consultation because they are not considered permanent residents of Portsmouth.

Ms. Ellcome added: “Resi-

dents parking questionnaires are sent to households registered for council tax. Registered student accommodation is exempt from council tax and would not therefore have been sent a questionnaire.”

However, UPSU VP Welfare and Community Stephen Mr. Roberts explains: “roads with

a large student population will produce skewed results if students aren’t asked for their opinion.”

Some of the roads that are included in the parking scheme are: Rugby Road, Telephone Road, Orchard Road, Manners Road as well as parts of Francis Avenue, Talbot Road and Percy

Road.

Mr. Roberts plans to hold a meeting with Portsmouth City Council to discuss the changes in the parking system around Portsmouth. He said: “We tried opening discussions with the council but have had no response so are attempting to raise a bit of awareness within the student body before approaching them again.”

He added: “the Council say they are committed to getting more students involved in local democracy, and engaged in their community but then deliberately marginalise them in the decision making process.”

Mr. Roberts urges students who have been affected by this change to contact him to discuss their issues. He hopes to meet with Councillor Gerald Vernon Jackson and present students’ concerns to the Council in the near future.

Amnesty International drive around University.. in a cardboard car Amyrose Dempsey

On 9th March, University of Portsmouth Amnesty International went round the University in a cardboard car to raise awareness on the issue of the driving ban for women in Saudi Arabia, and also to make students aware that International Women’s Day existed.

The tradition of International Women’s Day sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues and so on with flowers and small gifts, a ritual which is not practised so much nowadays.

Furthermore, they wanted to make sure that students knew that they existed within the University as a society, and that they were active.

“It’s important for us to be visible - the driving ban in Saudi Arabia highlights one of the many challenges women still face around the world.”

Women’s rights, a topic that has been dawning on us through time and is said to be sorted through equal rights and sexual harassment policies, is raised once again and made aware through this society.

The students that took part in this event were: Amanda Orre, Andrew Sellahewa, Jesh Abraham, Sam Schafer, Stefanie Simon, Katie Green and the society’s President Alex Vince.

When asked if they believe if the event changed people’s minds on certain issues, Alex Vince responded: “I don’t know if it changed minds, but it attracted quite a bit of attention!”

University of Portsmouth Amnesty International is committed to raising the profile of Amnesty International at the University and in the community in general.

The society, which was set up at the University three years ago, state their purpose is to “protect individuals wherever justice, fairness, freedom and truth are denied”.

They campaigning for specific issues as decided by UPAI members, as well as taking part in campaigns.

Students walk out over education cuts Dan Chesterton Editor

University of Portsmouth students walked out of lectures and seminars on 14th March in protest over education reforms and cuts.

A group of about 20 students walked out at midday as part of a week of action against higher tuition fees, hidden course costs and a lack of bursaries.

The students held placards outside the Students’ Union with slogans such as “Cut cake... not jobs”, “Supporting each other for a better future” and “Strong-

er together”.

The walk out was part of the National Union of Students’ ‘Come Clean’ campaign which saw students across the country walk out as part of a week of action calling on government and universities to ‘Come Clean’ on their plans for higher education.

NUS President, Liam Burns, said: “We need a national debate on changes to higher education and this week we will remind ministers that we are watching what they’re doing.”

“When the government quietly dropped plans for a higher education bill earlier this year they

didn’t drop their plans. They simply removed the opportunity for the kind of scrutiny that has been afforded to changes to the NHS.” “Students, parents, lecturers and anyone with a stake in education wants to know what the government and our institutions have in store for higher education and demand that they come clean.”

The students protested at the perceived increased marketisation of higher education and against universities who are pushing towards partial feewaivers rather than bursaries.

Youth charity launch cycle tour Vanessa Azzopardi Deputy Head of News

The Otesha Project has launched three cycle tours across Britain this year, in which team members will take messages about planet-friendly lifestyles to thousands of people along three stunning routes through the country.

Otesha UK is a youth-led charity organisation that, according to their website, “helps young people to become agents of change, inspiring others to take small actions which add up to big change towards a cleaner, greener and fairer world.”

Prior to the tour, each team will be trained in bike mainte-

nance as well as group living skills, and will also participate in creative workshops.

Tour coordinator Calu Lema said: “Each of these tours is going to be an incredible experience. They’ll take to the saddle, travelling, eating and living together as a demonstration of how to live in a low-impact way.”

These tours are an opportunity for students to, not only take part in an exciting summer adventure, but also learn more about Britain and the environment while also gaining certain skills. Experiences such as these also give a boost to a student’s CV. The six-week Western Quest

begins on 10th August in south Wales, where the team will then travel north and then back south through Somerset and Devon and finish off in Penzance on 22nd September.

The ARC (alcohol recovery centre) will be a highly supervised room, providing a safe environment in which students can regain sobriety. The initiative was decided in a meeting at the Students’ Union by its representatives and other members of the local community. It was also mentioned that drunken students were unnecessarily taking up beds in A&E departments which could be put to better use.

Durham University Seven students from the University of Durham will be living below the poverty line for a week in the month of May. The students will be living on a budget of £1 per day for all food, drink and everything inbetween.

This budget is the daily reality for 1.4 billion people around the world who are forced to live below the poverty line every day.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of malaria in Africa and, through sponsorships, to raise money for ‘Malaria No More UK’.

King’s College London Students’ Union elections at King’s College London have been suspended due to misconduct from the candidates. All previous votes were considered null and void after candidates were getting people to login with their KCL ID and then vote on their behalf.

Many of the candidates will have to go back to square one with their campaigns and may not be able to commit to another week of campaigns due to other commitments, which may affect the outcome. The investigation continues.

University of Oxford The University hosted a discussion on corrective therapy for homosexuals. The controversial event was called ‘Pray the gay away?’, which was hosted by two men who had been to corrective therapy and failed.

Both men argued why corrective therapy does not work and tried to discourage others from seeking such therapy.

Owen Alun John, an LMH undergraduate behind the event, explained the ‘aim’ behind the event was a desire to “debunk the corrective therapy myth by offering a unique opportunity to hear directly from two men who’ve been through it.”

As it currently stands, anyone from a user, to a dealer, to a supplier of drugs can be sent to prison for involvement with any illegal substances that are out there. I often wonder however, as I’m sure many of you do: how useful really is this approach?

Are we actually tackling what the Government is calling the “war on drugs”?

In recent weeks, Richard Branson, yes, the famous Virgin Airways boss, has taken a stance on what he believes is an entirely failed attempt to confront and attack drug issues in Britain.

Rejecting the current method for stomping out drugs, he suggests that both the Government and society look at drug offences in a different way, to try to combat the severe problem our country has with illegal substances.

In this new proposal, Branson advocates that rather than sending drug users and dealers to jail, we place them in a strict rehabilitation scheme; enabling them to combat their addiction.

I personally take quite a liberal stance on particularly lower class drugs, but am fully aware and in agreement that many class A drugs are dangerous and

their effect on the individual can be detrimental to both the abuser and the community, for me at least, rehabilitation could potentially help drug offenders more so than prison.

It is inevitable that substance abuse is a particularly grave issue which is challenging to tackle however, with drugs more than anything else; it seems we forget that substance misuse really is a stifling addiction that renders a person helpless. Moreover, the general consensus often seems to exhibit that substance abuse requires punishment not help.

However, any form of addiction needs appropriate care doesn’t it?

I mean, we don’t send individuals who misuse alcohol or have gambling addictions to prison do we? No, instead we give them the help needed to gain a certain level of control and attain a better quality of life. The Government’s job is surely to protect public health and although drug offenses are illegal, shouldn’t we be dealing with fighting the problem from the root; which in my opinion is the addiction.

In his campaign, Branson turned his attention to countries such as Portugal and Switzerland who have decriminalised

drugs and have had seemingly successful results, with rates of HIV/AIDS significantly lower and drug-related crimes reduced. Surely this is substantial enough to showcase that treatment of drug offenders may in fact assist the problem of drugs to a greater extent than simply trying to remove them from society and placing them in an environment that is already laden with dodgy drug dealings.

Prison itself is often a breeding ground for secret drug use, so can we really say that sending a person hooked on cocaine to prison means they will not be in contact with the substance for the duration of their sentence?

I think not. Moreover, sending drug offenders to jail also has a financial implication; last year, statistics showed that following crimes of VATP (violence against the person), drug offenders made up the second highest percentage of people in prison, over taking sexual offenders and robbers.

Understandably, drugs are dangerous to the individual but I’d rather see more space in jail for those who, in my opinion, are more at risk of physically harming others. Housing drug abusers in prison costs an ab-

solute fortune; rehabilitation would cost significantly less and it seems from the statistics given

by Branson concerning other countries that this too would be a more effective method.

Yet in spite of all the positivity moving towards Branson’s notion for decriminalising drugs, you do have to acknowledge that the substances are classed as illegal.

After all, drugs like heroin, crystal meth and so on are all categorised as class A and so I can understand why some people feel it is more than appropriate to send them to jail as prohibited activity should be punished in some way or another.

Many may also argue that prison acts as a stronger deterrent to dealers or perhaps younger people who dabble in the drug world, as the reality of being trapped in an environment riddled with extremely dangerous people could potentially be enough for people to want to change their lives around.

One thing is for sure however, drugs are heavily peppered throughout our society and fighting the most severe and detrimental of them will be a long and perhaps never-ending challenge that we face.

After being announced that the last million tickets will go on sale in April, the nation will be scrambling to get their name on them. However, there have been claims that those who have been rejected twice before will get a ‘headstart’ in order to appease the already upset customers. Last time I checked, wasn’t this supposed to be completely fair? If you decide on having a system in place with a ballot to make this system fair, you can’t just change the rules.

This isn’t the only thing that has happened this year that has made the Olympic Games somewhat of a farce.

Lord Coe claims that 75% of tickets were on sale to the public. However, a recent documentary claims that only 39% of tickets were available, with the best sports going to sponsors and members of the contenders’ families.

One of the biggest mistakes they have made is having an ‘Olympic Lane’, accessible only to athletes in order to make sure they get to the stadiums without having to battle through London traffic.

It makes sense, as the lucky ticket holders don’t want to be waiting thirty minutes for the 100m Final because Usain Bolt got held up in traffic.

It’s also good from a worldwide standpoint because they can witness that the Olympics are going smoothly. However, when it’s possible that the public can pay their way onto this special lane so they don’t become late for work, it raises serious questions about the ethics of the already tarnished games.

I mean, it’s bad enough that the logo cost over £400,000 to make and looks as though a six year old on a bad day has drawn it, but when you realise that it is problem after problem, the optimistic bidder must think to themselves whether it’s actually worth it. For the avid fan, their best chance will be on Ebay or other online auctions, however prices are sure to be extortionate. For everyone else, there is always your television.

My main problem with the term ‘Video Game Addiction’ is it feels like an expression brought on by the media. Gaming is still new as a form of entertainment and like cave men looking upon fire, the media is terrified by Gaming. They spout out ideas like playing games will rot your brain, even though gaming is probably better for you than TV. When gaming, you have to use your brain to problem solve while, with television you stare at your happy smiles machine till you feel numb.

The notion that people who spend their free time playing games will amount to nothing is ridiculous. Obviously, if someone didn’t go to school, college or university and spent all the time playing ‘Street Fighter’ they’re probably not going to become a doctor, but that goes for anything. If a little child spent all day watching television, he’s not going to amount to anything bar maybe churning butter for a living. Unfortunately, the media

half way. It is hard to disregard stories of people dying from lack of food because of ‘World

of Warcraft‘ or people re-enacting scenes from ‘Manhunt’. The problem is, it’s not really general of gamers as a whole, it is a select few. For example, if I shot a school full of children then people discovered I have played ‘GTA’ the news would blow that completely out of proportion.

They would report that ‘GTA’ made me into a psychopath, whereas if I did the exact same thing but I was an avid player of ‘Kirby’s Epic Yarn’ no game would be mentioned.

You realise that the media only boycotts the violent games but covers all games with the same tarred brush. Like everything, there are extreme examples, and the News knows that.

And it’s these extreme examples that are more interesting and exciting to the media which is highly disconcerting.

I have been playing games most of my life and now. It’s something I enjoy and if that makes me an addict, then so be it. Sounds bloody fantastic to me.

Next weekend the Mother of The Galleon’s picture editor will be wiping the sweat from her brow after a sponsored motorbike ride for Help for Heroes.

A buzz of satisfaction will be sure to wash over her when she takes off her helmet and peels

off the bike leathers.

It will be impossible to tell that it’s her first Mother’s day since surviving cancer.

After losing her job while recovering and battling a series of major operations, Helen Dawes, mother of Rhianna Dawes, courageously still thinks of others on this special day.

Similar to Rhianna, Business student Jess Patten also plans to show appreciation this Mother’s Day. Although for her, it is renamed as ‘Sue day’. After losing her mother when she was just twelve she was taken into the loving care of her cousin Sue. Initally, Mother’s day brought a small dose of sorrow to Jess.

Now she realises that this is a day she can say thank you for the support and love from her cousin.

Second year student Jess reflected: “Mother’s day is a day where you get to spoil your mother and that’s exactly what I do, just not the mother I thought it would be, but one that I love

just as much.” Such strength and love is truly inspirational and should be taken on board by all this Mother’s Day. So, maybe when picking your card out this year you will spend a little extra time selecting the perfect one.

I know a lot of us will still be at university, and will be unable to return home for the occasion, so just pick up the phone and let her know that your thoughts are with her.

But if you are lucky enough to be spending your time with your mother or that special someone this year, then your time and love is the best gift you can give them. Appreciate who you have and make sure they know that you care, it really will make their day that little extra bit special.

So, in case any of you have forgotten while you are piled under deadlines, 18th March is Mother’s day.

Although not the most grandest of occasions, it should still see as much effort as any other holiday, as sometimes our mums receive less appreciation than they deserve.

What sets you apart from other students in today’s competitive market? With graduate jobs in high demand, it is becoming increasingly important for students to focus on making themselves stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Volunteering is a great way to do this and according to Timebank research, 94% of employers believe that you can gain vital life skills from participating in voluntary work.

The University offers a wide range of opportunities in terms of working for local charities or helping with one-off projects.

You can participate as much or as little as you like, which provides flexibility around your university commitments. Where possible, volunteering can also

We spoke to Alice Hickman, volunteer coordinator at Purple Door Careers and Recruitment, who pinpointed three key reasons why volunteering is so at-

tractive to employers. Firstly, it provides you with key skills and experience, which looks great on your CV. Secondly, you can gain access to a work environment, giving you a taster of the world of employment.

Thirdly, employers now want to see that students have partici-

pated in other activities during their time at university. Whilst it’s great to focus on your studies and achieve a good degree, volunteering shows initiative and proves that you can commit yourself to more than one task at a time.

information on volunteering, the Purple Door Careers and Recruitment centre is a great place to get started. It holds a drop-in service on Thursdays from 10am till 12pm and 2pm till 4pm. They specialise in helping students find suitable volunteering work around the Portsmouth area.

What is it good for?

The acidity in the lemon juice is great for breaking down excess skin and lightening both hair and nails. It’s full of vitamin C which acts as a great antioxidant and will leave you feeling fresh and healthy after every use.

Here are some quick tips for using lemon juice as part of your beauty regime: Face and skin Lemon juice can be a great, gentle exfoliator. The citric acid breaks down the top layer of skin. The dead skin cells rub away easily and it isn’t rough on your skin like other exfoliators, and here’s how: Squeeze the juice of a lemon into your hand or invest in a bottle of concentrated lemon juice and fill your palm with the liquid.

• Rub the juice into your face liberally and leave to soak for 5 minutes.

• After soaking, use your finger tips and rub in a circular motion around your face. You should be able to feel excess skin coming away.

• Rinse thoroughly, pat dry and moisturise.

Lemon juice can also add a new lease of life to your nails by lightening the tips and making them stronger. Simply squeeze the juice of two lemons into a shallow bowl and submerge your nails, leave to soak for 10 minutes per hand and repeat weekly - tired nails will be looking healthy in time.

And finally, lemon juice is a quick cheat for highlighting your hair. It’s particularly good for blondes as it enhances natural highlights that are already there.

You can also use lemon juice to combat hair disasters. If a DIY hair dyeing attempt has left you with darker locks than you were hoping for, pop some lemon juice on a couple of times a week and you’ll see it gradually lightening.

Whether your hair’s light or dark, all you have to do is pop about 3 lemons’ juices onto dry hair, leave for 15-20 minutes and wash as normal.

The weather over the past couple of weeks has given us a glimmer of hope that Spring is actually on its way. And that means it’s time to embrace one of this season’s biggest trends: Pastel colours.

Now pastels might seem a little feminine, but pastels can be great on guys too.

First-year Psychology student Derks says ‘I like pastels; they look good on me because I have pale skin. I think adding a pastel tshirt can update any outfit.’ So there’s no excuse for guys to not to give the trend a go.

Here are a few ways to wear one of this season’s biggest looks from day ‘til night.

Guys Day Either invest in a pair of pastel skinnies to wear with a plain t-shirt, or a pastel coloured tee for an easy to wear daytime look that’s not too overboard. Give a nod to the trend by investing in some baby blue sunglasses or shoelaces. Go for washed out shades to keep the look subtle Night Pair a pastel shirt and tie combo w i t h g r e y trousers for a smart night time look.

Adding a pastel tie or even bow tie to a classic white shirt is an easy fashion fix.

Girls Day Add a pastel coloured cardigan to a ditsy print dress for an cutesy daytime look. If you’re feeling brave, mix your colours. For instance lilac skinnies and a pale pink top. Add injections of pastel colours by investing in a pair of pumps in a pretty shade or some pretty

hair accessories that can be paired with items already in your wardrobe. Pastel nail varnishes are everywhere right now and can be worn from day to night.

Night Pair pastel heels with a light coloured dress to tie in the trend. Invest in a cream dress and a light, pastel coloured blazer. They will gel together well but can be worn with the other garments. Pile on accessories. A pastel clutch, bangle and skinny belt will add a new lease of life to your LBD and is much cheaper than buying a whole new outfit.

Recipe: homemade oriental spring rolls Jade Reddington

Spring rolls are a classic favourite. They are tasty, easy to make and a quick hunger fix. So why not get into the spring of things and have a go at making them yourself?

Spring rolls are well known appetisers of Asian cuisine. Depending on where they are made they can comprise of different cooking methods and bathed in a rainbow of herbs and spices.

Australians have placed their own spin on this classic by dashing in inventive ingredients.

For vegetarian options, simply substitute the chicken for tofu, or keep it simple and stick to vegetables. Cabbage leaves are a good alternative. To make this recipe simple, it is advised you buy the spring roll wrappers readymade.

As it can be tricky to master the art of rolling the parcels on your first attempts. There are a number of Thai supermarkets down Albert Road which supply these, and at a cheap price too. If you get stuck there are a number of YouTube tutorials that go through this process step by step.

Ingredients

(makes approximately 6 rolls)

How will you serve your spring rolls?

Cut the chicken into cubes of around 0.5cm. Heat oil in a large wok or frying pan and then fry the chicken for around 4 minutes whilst continuously stirring. If using soy sauce/ oyster sauce, now would be the time to add it in.

Once cooked, leave on the side to cool.

Carefully place two spring roll wrappers on top of each other. Position the sheet so it’s in a diamond not a square.

Spoon 2 tablespoons of filling in a line near one corner of the sheet.

As the capital of the state of Bavaria, Munich, or München to the locals, is one of the largest cities in Germany. Lying just to the north of Austria, this cosmopolitan city is home to some of the world’s most beautiful architecture, notable nightclubs and famous breweries.

As well as all this, once a year, Munich is host to the world famous Oktoberfest, in which over five million visitors descend on the city to sample some of the finest local beers, traditional foods and enjoy the fun fair which runs for the entirety of the sixteen day festival.

As well as numerous museums, art galleries and worldrenown theatres, Munich boasts over 6,000 bars, clubs and pubs within the city’s limits which are all easily accessible by the

area’s many public transport options. Each recognised for their punctuality, Munich offers not only an under and overground railway system, but also a network of trams and buses. There is also a growing number of bike lanes and bike hire stations if you’re after a healthy alternative. Handy if you’ve indulged in too many Weißwürste, a local speciality sausage.

For the film fanatics amongst you, the Bavaria Film Studios are located in Geiselgasteig, a suburb of the city. Films such as Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Das Boot and The Neverending Story were produced at the studio, and daily tours can be booked to visit sets and props from these films.

Those with a keen interest in history may want to visit the museum at Dachau, devoted to the atrocities of the World War II concentration camp in the

city. Although the museum is not what most people would wish to visit on a holiday, the exhibits there are truly thought-provoking and well worth a few hours of your time.

Travelling a bit further out of town allows visitors to view some of southern Germany’s most breathtaking alpine scenery, with the dramatic shadowy

Alps providing a backdrop over miles of farmland and forest.

Not far away from Munich itself, Schloss Neuschwanstein, described as King Ludwig II’s ‘fairytale castle’, balances atop a 200 metre cliff face. Entrance to the palace is fairly cheap and visitors may recognise the building as Baron Bomburst’s lair from the film Chitty Chitty Bang

A little further towards Austria again, the town of Berchtesgaden offers two attractions: the salt mines and Hitler’s hideout, The Eagle’s Nest. For a particularly fun afternoon, the salt mines offer good value for money. The price of your Eintrittskarte (entry ticket) will cover the hire of traditional miners’ overalls, a ride upon the underground train, a tour by boat of the underground lakes and a stunning look at the salt caves carved by hundreds of years of mining.

With fairly warm summers and almost guaranteed white Christmases due to its proximity to the Alps, Munich doesn’t tend to attract sun-worshippers, being some 300 miles away from the coast. However, if it is culture, history or art that you are looking for, Munich’s got it covered.

After his love for cheese phased into wanting to become a tractor driver and then a film maker, it seemed as though he might have never discovered his true calling. That was until a friend at film school had a party.

“He asked me if I wanted to DJ so I did. I finally realised what I loved doing, and that was making music.”

After making a mix tape but not having an artist name, it was only when watching a Ninja film with his friend, that the name “Skills” popped up and Jaguar thought he’d found a name for himself. “There was a part in the film where the main character says ‘let me demonstrate some of my Jaguar Skills’.

I had it on loop continuously but still didn’t know what to call myself, I asked my friends and they said ‘why don’t you just call yourself Jaguar Skills?’ That’s when the light bulb struck and I was like, hmm, Jaguar Skills.

Perfect!”

With a name like that, Skills could only ever imagine his logo as some sort of Superhero Ninja DJ, so that’s how the costume originated. “I didn’t intend on dressing up like my logo. The producers said ‘make sure you wear your mask’ and I was like ‘what mask. I don’t look like that?’

“Radio 1 thought I should wear the mask I had drawn on my logo and when I did, it was REALLY fun. It all made sense.”

Not only does Skills do all his own artwork, he is also not fussy about where he performs, as long as he plays his music: “It doesn’t matter whether I perform in dirty little clubs in Huddersfield or on massive stages at random festivals – they’re all different and they’re all awesome!”

With a positive attitude like that, it’s hard to see why anyone could not love Mr. Skills.

As the interview was coming to a close, Jaguar told us: “Portsmouth to me is like going home. I am ready to ROCK Portsmouth!”

It is safe to say that he did just that.

Despite having never toured UK soil, the five men from Baltimore, MD are beginning to make quite an impact on the metal scene.

Their friendship with heavyweights August Burns Red has in no doubt helped get them noticed, but you don’t get shown that level of support from other bands without justification.

Truth and Purpose, the band’s second studio album begins with ‘False Prophet’, clearly showing the bands Christian message from the start. The chorus reads: ‘I believe there’s a king, a throne out there and we will see his face one of these days’, which leaves a powerful impression as the album flows into the next track.

Gig Review

The atmosphere at the Pyramids for this gig was an odd one. Filled with families, young adults dressed up for their Friday nights out, and random music lovers; the crowd was hard to pin down.

One thing they had in common, however, was a love for one of Britain’s finest new talents: Maverick Sabre.

The sound at the venue was terrible, something that understandably angered the singer, forcing him to play ‘Cold Game’ and ‘They Found Him A Gun’ acapella and missing out on his opportunity to show off his acoustic guitar skills. He more than made up for it with his faultless vocal performance though.

decision, as it is the strongest song on the album. The complex time-signatures combine with melodic lead guitar riffs to create music that is highly technical, but is still most importantly, listenable.

If metal vocals are not to your taste, then ‘Lunar’ is worth listening to. The track encompasses I, The Breather’s distinctive sound without the need for Shawn Spann’s vocals, producing an instrumental that few will find hard to appreciate. ’4.12.11’ provides the final impression of the album, with the lyrics again being very personal.

The song ends with Shawn screaming, ‘I’m begging to you, asking you why you took the closest thing to my life’, questioning God for answers after the death of a loved one. His anger is reflected in the heavy parts of the song, whilst his grief and remembrance are apparent in the softer moments.

Could this be the first brick in the wall for credible, independent UK hip-hop, a scene which has never really taken off internationally? Yes we have our Tinie Tempahs and Plan Bs, but as soon as they smell money, it’s bye-bye credibility, hello pop synths and chart collaborations.

This is the debut offering from Don’t Flop Records, an independent company which is most notable for hosting the UK’s biggest rap battle league for years. Their ‘Student vs.

Teacher’ rap battle recently went viral and received a review from The Guardian and was played on Channel 4 News.

Veteran rapper Jefferson Price’s opening track ‘What You Saying Though’ is far from being the boldest or most passionate track on the EP, but serves to demonstrate his smooth flow,

music was exhibited through his cover of Sam Cooke’s ‘Change Is Gonna Come’ that the audience couldn’t help but sway and sing along to.

‘Sometimes’, Maverick’s first ever release, provided the biggest sing-a-long of the evening, followed by his latest release ‘No One’ which only reached #50 in the UK Top 40. However, his album ‘Lonely Are The Brave’ provided the true testimony to his greatness, reaching #2 in the album charts.

Maverick Sabre ended his set with the summer hit ‘Let Me Go’ before returning for an encore of ‘I Need’, his greatest song to date. His chilled out demeanour and effortlessly amazing singing voice spoke for itself and his music accompanying it wasn’t just background music for a BBC documentary.

Maverick Sabre’s performance was inspiring and proved that no matter who you are, sometimes all you need is talent. At 21 years old, the singer is just beginning to prove what an uplifting, moving and fun show he puts on and he is definitely one to watch.

ricocheting over electro-tinged beats, making it a prime candidate for radio play.

Unfortunately, the only things that show much improvement by the second song ‘They Follow’ are the instrumentals which conjure a dark atmosphere but are left hanging by mediocre lyrics.

‘Insight’, however, stands alone on this EP as a masterpiece of genius sampling of various rappers, who make a welcome change to Price’s reliable tone. Artists such as Jay-Z are sampled to mould a unique chorus that works perfectly.

‘Good Old Days’, again, has a great beat and chorus, but lacks passion. Final track ‘Persistence’ is Price’s personal best on the EP, addressing his haters in true Eminem style, letting them know he can’t be silenced.

Although Don’t Flop exhibits some amazing talent all in possession of razor sharp wit and great ‘mum’ jokes, the limelight is stolen by featured rappers who out-do him but equally provide the EP with great material.

Excellent production, mediocre rapping.

Seth Lakeman Wedgewood Rooms, 29th February

“You know it’s going to be a good gig when you see a double bass, banjo and fiddle being brought onto the stage.”

I heard someone say this at the start of the performance and I couldn’t agree with her more; you know you are going to be in for something special when these instruments are the main staples and Lakeman delivered.

With the release of his sixth album, Tales From The Barrel House, Seth Lakeman has embarked on a tour around the UK, visiting Portsmouth’s Wedgewood Rooms.

The gig was a sell out, clear by all the available space being taken up by people bunching together, trying to get as close to the action as they could.

Seth Lakeman kicked off his performance with an energetic rendition of ‘More Than Money’ that had the whole crowd pumped up, ready for more, and he did not disappoint with the level rising with each song he performed.

What made this gig was not only Lakeman’s ability to get the crowd participating in the songs, but to captivate everyone by making them stand still and watch him with awe, especially during his acoustic performance of ‘Artisan’.

Not only did Lakeman’s vocals sound as good as they do on his albums, but being able to watch him perform live gave the opportunity to see that he is a true musician in every sense of the word. He alternated between playing guitar and fiddle with ease.

The quality of the gig showed through the crowd’s reaction after the last song had been played, and during the last song, ‘A Shanty Song’, a crescendo of cheers was building up until the last note when the crowd erupted into deafening sound levels and applause.

The encore that Lakeman did was worth the wait as he played some old favourites from his album Freedom Fields; ‘The Lady of the Sea’ had everyone singing along and wanting more.

An insight into the core of Asian culture throughout, this film demonstrates their appreciation for life as a privilege rather than a birth right.

The film follows the journey of seven pensioners acted by seven of Britain’s most established actors; taking them on an adventure of selfdiscovery to the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in the heart of India.

The hotel is sold to them as ‘a paradise for the older generation’ but it is not quite the haven that they expected.

Sonny, played by the enthusiastic Dev Patel, manages the less-than-luxurious resort, and whilst the holiday may not be the experience that the pensioners expected, it manages to reveal its inner charm in rather surprising ways.

Filled with classically English humour, it triumphs in its representation of the retired generation, exploring the development of heart-warming friendships and aspects of ‘over-the-hill’ life.

Although the comedy could be seen as bordering on a little stereotypical and prejudice at times, it is all played out with a good heart.

You can be assured that The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel will provide countless laughs, and it really is an ultimate feel good movie, showing two diverse cultures coming together in this wonderfully touching journey.

I am not a big fan of rom-coms, to me they are far too slushy and cringe-worthy, with self-pitying characters that make you want to take a pin and stab both your eyes out like Oedipus – not because of the incest, but the shame of momentarily enjoying something that you know deep down you shouldn’t.

However, I had high hopes for This Means War as it has the brilliant Tom Hardy in it, accompanied by Chris Pine. Both play secret agents and best friends who happen to fall for the same woman Lauren Scott, played by the gorgeous, and eternally young, Reese Witherspoon.

Unsure which of the two she should date, Lauren decides to take the advice of her overtly sexually promiscuous friend and date both men at the same time in a hope to decide which one is right for her.

I wouldn’t exactly call this film a rom-com as it isn’t especially romantic. You know that one of the guys is going to win the woman over at the end, the

other will lose, or she will walk away and let them get on with it. Basically, no-one will win in a love triangle. The only way that this would work is if Lauren was hit by a bus to punish her for playing two guys, thus removing the problem and allowing the friends to continue killing terrorists and watching American Football as friends should do.

Yet there are some funny moments in this film.

Admittedly they are not amazing jokes, but what more do you expect from a rom-com?

Both Hardy and Pine have good chemistry together, and that is

evident from the way in which they bounce lines off each another. The linguistic jousting between them and the ‘one upmanship’ attitude they both have is quite enjoyable to watch, which combined with their physicality makes them two very likeable characters.

However, I did think to myself while watching the film: would I watch this if the cast was full of unknown stars? We have Bane and Captain Kirk fighting over Elle Woods, which I think most people would be intrigued to see played out on the big screen.

Washington steals the limelight from Reynolds’ rookie cop Safe House In cinemas now

This South African set spy thriller stars Denzel Washington as CIA renegade Tobin Frost, and Ryan Reynolds as rookie safe house keeper Matt Weston. When Frost unexpectedly surrenders to the CIA he is transported to Matt’s safe house.

With Frost, however, trouble arrives and the building is soon under attack, forcing both men to escape together. Matt is suddenly left isolated with Frost and now must decide who he really trusts. With this interesting premise and strong performances from its two leads, Safe House is enjoyable while it lasts.

The recycled action sequenc-

es, however, ensure it is unlikely to linger in the memory for very long. The chief problem is that today’s standards for action sequences are extremely high.

To take a recent example;

who could forget Tom Cruise attempting to scale the Burj Khalifa in Mission Impossible 4?

Safe House lacks moments like this. There is no grand scale car chase and there is no standout

fight scene. It’s all a bit soft.

That’s not to say it’s not enjoyable while it lasts, just unmemorable afterwards. This is disappointing because everything else is there.

It’s tightly scripted, with enough twists to live up to its thriller billing. And despite spending the film dressed as a teenager, Reynolds is likeable enough as the lead man and is believable as a rookie agent. But make no mistake about it – this is Washington’s movie.

His Tobin Frost exudes intelligence and several of his scenes with Reynolds crackle with electricity.

So, although the set pieces suffer from a lack of innovation, Safe House is still worth your time thanks to the always charismatic Washington and the always likeable Reynolds.

Rampart Boulevard, Los Angeles, is the main area of traffic for the local police department that provides this film with its name.

An area of mixed ethnicity and cultures, which gained notoriety during the 90s after being assigned a special CRASH (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums) unit due to its escalating scale of gang warfare.

By the closing of that decade however, over 70 members of this same unit, tasked with policing the streets, had been implicated in criminal offences ranging from drunk and disorderly to bank robbery.

Seeing the potential in this situation for studying the darker side of police work, director Oren Moverman (The Messenger) and American crime writer James Ellroy (Cop, L.A Confidential) have teamed together to weave an intricate character study of a film, using the real events of the Rampart scandal as a backdrop.

So from then on we witness

the lives of anybody in his immediate vicinity being pulled into this spiral of destruction and down the plughole with him.

What is strange, given how un-relentlessly narcissistic and explosive the character has and will always be, is how watchable Harrelson makes him. This man openly displays examples of every negative “ism” in the book yet somehow we are compelled to watch his every move.

What does make the film hard to watch, strangely more so than what we should detest in the character, are the visuals.

At times they become muddled, giving out mixed messages, superfluous angles and confused jump-cuts which threaten to detract from the stunning main performance.

The plot and pacing also meander, turn back and loop around themselves in a peculiar and unrewarding manner.

Although luckily, Woody, through selfless conviction, is capable of keeping this boat afloat single handedly, delivering a performance with great staying power and even creating some empathy for such a seemingly unredeemable character. century, not only do his house, car, and life get absolutely ruined, he also loses his chance to kiss the ‘hottest’ girl in school.

Thomas, usually a goody two shoes teenager, gets completely overwhelmed with everything going on around him that he soon, just like everything else, gets out of control.

From watching the trailer I didn’t understand how two hours of a film could only use one idea; a house party. I truly was mistaken. There is one part of the film that had me and the entire cinema crying with laughter so do not miss the chance to brighten up your day.

Watching Project X will keep you entertained, but also make you feel very jealous that you weren’t invited. This film is brilliant, truly hilarious and will have you in stitches from the very beginning.

Having heard friends’ reviews of Daniel Radcliffe’s first film since clearing away his cloak and wand, I was wondering why I was about to pay to sit in a dark room and scare myself silly for ninety minutes.

Telling the story of an old house haunted by a ‘Woman in Black’ whose own son was killed, she kills any children in the village to seek revenge.

The ghoul is disrupted when the owner dies and a solicitor with his own young family visits the house to attend to and organise the papers of the deceased. As you can imagine, chaos and terror ensues.

Definitely a film to be placed in the ‘horror’ film genre, it dishes out lashings of heart-stopping scares, and the use of suspense to manipulate the audience is admittedly impressive: I screamed when a mere crow flew out of a chimney.

However, despite having some genuinely terrifying moments, and definitely giving you your money’s worth in terms of frights, the story is essentially incredibly simple and basic.

Having seen the stage show in the West End, the film toys with and distorts the original plot line. As a three man show, it really gives the story room to develop. The film complicates this, introducing new characters and multiple storylines which don’t really add much.

It embraces horror film clichés like an old acquaintance: you find yourself shouting at the screen, wondering why oh why Daniel is wandering towards the ghostly sound of footsteps and not on the first train back to civilisation and alive people. Essentially this is not a film; it is a cardiacarrest waiting to happen.

Console Review Game review: Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

Turn off the lights and grab your torch; the highly anticipated follow-up to Alan Wake’s critically acclaimed 2010 debut has arrived from Remedy Studios. Fans of this highly original yet underrated psychological thriller will not be disappointed.

American Nightmare is not a sequel, nor does it follow on in any way from the previous game. Still relying on the motifs of dark and light, you’re transported from the original’s claustrophobic forest setting to a much more open desert town littered with shadows and oozing Americana.

Equipped with your trusty flashlight in one hand and a gun in the other, you guide Wake around, collecting pages from his manuscript and reliving the story. You, as Alan Wake, are now attempting to alter history whilst trying to understand the plot, in what becomes a delicately poised balancing act for the player.

This time, Wake is battling his evil alter ego “Mr Scratch” who commands a host of Taken, controlled by the dark presence. With much more focus on the action this time round, Wake has been upgraded with new weapons varying from nail guns to S.M.Gs, a radar icon displaying points on the map, and new enemies. Perhaps the greatest feature of this excellent expansion pack, though, is the ‘Arcade Action’ (akin to C.O.D’s Horde mode), in which you fight waves of Taken.

Graphically the game is once again excellent, the only critique being a slight lack of suspense and a less detailed storyline compared to its predecessor, but for the mere price of 1,200 MSpoints (about £10) on Xbox 360, it’s a steal.

Sony launch new handheld PS Vita console Oliver Colebrook

On 22nd February 2012, the PS Vita was finally released to the expectant Western World after more than two years of the familiar rumour, hype and hearsay routine (starting as far back as July 2009) that usually accompanies the release of a new console.

There are many impressive new features that make the PS Vita worth investing in, even should you still be enjoying the life left in your now-6 year old PSP. This includes a front touchscreen and rear touch pad, which could potentially give greater control to games than even the PS3 can currently manage. Launch games such as Dynasty Warriors Next and Wipeout 2048 utilise these aspects, albeit in basic ways that you would expect.

The success of this new control method is, of course, dependent upon the creativity with which developers use the hardware at their disposal.

You’ve also got front and back cameras (0.3 megapixel), a screenshot function that you can use at any point (useful for those rare achievements in games that you wish you could savour in visual form, rather than a save file), and the ability to listen to your own personal music while

playing certain games such as Wipeout 2048 and Plants vs.

Zombies. Again, time will tell whether developers take full advantage of these features, or whether they become nothing more than a gimmick used to boost initial sales figures.

The most important new features, though, are more obvious to the naked eye. There is the 2nd analog stick, making for far greater (and, it must be said, a lot more comfortable) control over your handheld games.

Fans of Monster Hunter on the PSP will be happy to know you no longer need to use ‘the claw’ to play it. This also means the FPS genre should find better success on the Vita than it did with its predecessor, if the Unit

13 demo (full game out now) is anything to go by.

Backwards compatibility with the PSP is a given, although UMDs have now been made obsolete, so it will be your online downloads that you’ll be coming back to.

The battery lasts for 4-5 hours with bluetooth and wireless connected constantly. Shut these off while reducing screen brightness, and you can significantly enhance your short term battery life.

It also has a larger, brighter main screen, and a new menu interface. Like the PSP, remote play and connectivity with the PS3 is implemented. An improvement from the PSP is that all transfers between the Vita and PS3 now

giving players an expanded version of what they already knew and loved from previous platforming experiences.

You take control of young Jak and his sidekick Daxter, the latter having fallen into a pool of ominous ‘Dark Eco’ and been transformed into a rodent. The only way to restore him to his former self is to visit the Dark Eco sage, who is conveniently on the opposite side of the world map, with 100 collectible power cells standing between you and your ultimate destination.

Eco is the source of everything in the game. Green, red, blue and yellow correspond to earth, fire, water and air respectively, leading you to many diverse parts of the game world, some bright and uplifting, some damp and depressing. Emotion seeps from the game’s atmosphere thanks to brilliant car-

toonish visuals and a realistic physics engine.

It was a watershed moment for platformers. Ratchet andT Clank would change everythingK one year later with its introduction of weaponry into the genre, making Jak and Daxter the last (and also the greatest) of itsC older platforming kind. This is what makes the game a classic,F not the great gameplay innova-b tions or story revelations. It isf simplicity itself. It didn’t createS a new form; rather, it masteredt the original one. a It became a 3D Mario, Sonich and Zelda all rolled into one, theg pinnacle that we should look to when inspecting the remnantsn of a once playful young genera-s tion that has since been handedd a machine gun and told to fights for the action-adventure genret like some kind of captive childp soldier. b

After the childish innocence of Crash Bandicoot’s ‘collect everything in this room before moving on to the next one’ gameplay, and before the epic globe-trotting of Uncharted’s Nathan Drake, we had the blissful adolescence of the Jak and Daxter series on the PS2.

Naughty Dog took what they had spent four years learning on Bandicoot and expanded the ‘collect everything’ principle into a vast, free-flowing environment that lived and breathed independent of the player’s actions.

Interview: Mr Slam the poetry man

I caught up with one of the UK’s finest spoken word poets, someone who’s always been a great inspiration to me. This is a man who, when asked to describe his style, said: “It sounds like me talking.” His CV boasts him winning the UK 2007 Slam competition, the 2007 Glastonbury Slam and the 2006 Backdrop Slam as well as appearing on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Bespoken Word’. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage Mr. John Berkavitch.

For those of you wondering how slam poetry differs from traditional poetry, Berkavitch explains: “Slam implies the competition. Performance poetry is maybe a better term. The main difference being the ‘performed’ aspect. It’s not just the writing it’s also how that writing is presented.”

It’s interesting to note how he realised he wanted to start in the first place. “I’d been rapping for a few years and the change came about when I watched the Saul Williams film ‘SLAM’. Before that I didn’t know such a thing existed.”

I was keen to know his tactics in the 2007 UK Slam - how he found the right balance of wanting to advance to the next round but also save that extra gear for when it mattered. He

Sophie McAdam Clark who plays Adele (Eisenstein’s personal assistant) completely outshone the entire cast with her fantastic vocals, sassy attitude and brilliant acting. She is definitely one to watch out for. That is not to say that the rest of the cast didn’t match her, because believe me, they did.

Watching this performance was unbelievable, you never realise the amount of talented people you are surrounded by until you witness a show like this.

Full of upbeat operatic numbers, well-rehearsed dance sequences and a cast full of students, the buzz from the show was amazing.

Leading lady Emily Buck mesmerised the entire audience with her angel like voice and as for the leading man, Paul Bruce definitely pulled off the ‘in love with himself’ character so much so that it was maybe too believable.

The entire cast gave the performance of their lives and the stage looked alive with smiles and energy; everyone looked as though they were having fun.

For a student run performance, it was hard to believe that this wasn’t a show from the West End. It was absolutely fabulous and I only wish I could have taken part.

told me: “With any competition you need to have a strategy. The UK slams was a two-day event, so on the first day I was just trying to place in the top eight to get through to the next day.” He went on to say: “On the second day I had a much more defined set worked out. Starting with a funny one, followed by a serious one, followed by one that mixed

in a bit of beatbox and physical stuff. It worked out OK for me but I think the order was definitely important. As was luck.”

With a CV as impressive as Berkavitch’s, I had to ask what advice he would give to any poet trying to make it on the scene.

“It sounds cheesy but just keep working. Don’t start thinking you’re the best, listen to advice

and practice more than you are already practicing. Oh, and watch other people.”

Finally I asked him what’s next after winning the biggest trophy of them all: “I might have a cup of coffee. I’m also looking to get more into directing other people. I’ve done quite a bit of hip-hop-theatre stuff and I’d like to do more of that.”

,For an act that made its de-but on Britain’s Got Talent and sfailed miserably at impressing Simon Cowell, who would have dthought that one day, the same act would have their own two hour slot at theatres around the globe?

The Circus of Horrors have snot only taken the country by storm with their ‘interesting’ ddisplays, they have also made such a well-known name for themselves that Simon Cowell is dprobably crying into his pillow because he didn’t snap them up.

The Kings Theatre filled up with bodies as the show was about to begin; the theatre silenced as everyone waited to see what the night would bring.

“Not for the faint hearted” they announced as the stage lights

burst out in flames, and of course, they were right.

From sword-swallowing to contortion acts that shouldn’t be humanly possible. Watching this show was like watching magic; truly mesmerising. Plastic bags

were tied to every chair, water and blood made its way into the crowd and volunteers were snapped up to take part in the gruesome activities.

For an act that made me squirm when I first saw it on the TV, to see it in the flesh is something completely different.

Although I covered my eyes at some parts (for example when a man pulled his rib from under his flesh) that is not to say that the show was unenjoyable. To be able to believe the stunts that this cast are capable of, you have to see it.

There were fireworks, daring gymnasts, ventriloquists, pole dancers and everything you could ever imagine from the name “Circus of Horrors”. It was fantastic.

University of Portsmouth 1sts’ hopes of league glory came to an end as Chichester claimed an away point, enough to see them crowned South Eastern 1A champions at Langstone.

Despite dominating the opening period, Pompey were two down after half an hour.

A Kiri Portou brace, including one from the spot, in the second half gave Pompey hope of a fantastic turnaround. Chichester, however, saw out a 2-2 draw to be crowned champions for the 2011/12 season.

The home side came out of the blocks early, playing their passing game, and carving out the first opportunity on 9 minutes. Good play between Alex Cattini and Tom Resch led the ball falling to Portou on the edge of the box, who fired over.

Full back Cattini was giving the Chichester left back all sorts of problems, and on 15 beat him again to get to the by line and find striker Tim Rivers, his effort

inside the box looped up safely into the goalkeeper’s hands.

Despite Pompey’s dominance, Chichester opened the scoring midway through the first half with their first meaningful attack. After a Pompey attack broke down, Chichester broke quickly on the counter attack, riding numerous tackles and finding their winger inside the box, who finished low past goalkeeper James Clarke.

The visitors began to ease into the game, a long ball from the back found their striker on the edge of the Pompey box, but his curled effort flew well wide of Clarke’s goal.

On 32, Chichester added a second. A corner from the left was swung in deep towards the back post, and headed towards the goal.

Despite Pompey’s best efforts the clear the ball in the goalmouth scramble, the referee gave the goal amid the home side’s appeals.

Although two goals down at half time, the host’s continued to play well in the second half, trying to get back into the game.

Chances fell to Portou and Rivers, Pompey continuing to have

the majority of play.

With 20 minutes remaining, Pompey gave themselves a lifeline. As a corner from the home side broke down, the ball was crossed to the back post where Portou, completely unmarked, fired home.

Just 8 minutes later, the home side levelled. Substitute Jamie Eyre did well down the right flank and crossed, only for it to be blocked by a Chichester hand. Portou stepped up to take the sport kick, firing the ball low to the left.

Pompey continued to press to find a late winner to complete a memorable turnaround, but Chichester held firm to grind out a draw.

Captain Simon McManus was pleased with the determination and fight the team showed, a quality he believes the side has shown all season.

“In the second half the character everyone showed was really good, they probably didn’t enter our half too often and showed the determination and spirit that has been prevalent throughout the whole year. I was really happy how we played second half.”

Tchoukball takes strides into the big time Ian Parker

Intrigued about Tchoukball?

Whilst Varsity is bagging the back page headlines one of the University’s lesser known sports teams, Tchoukball Club has been making headlines of their own.

On 26th February the first team showed the swing in dominance over their greatest rivals Southampton in an efficient victory, winning by a substantial sixteen point margin and thereby securing third place in the South-East Tchoukball League.

In the same weekend the second team fought off an experienced Hayling Rhinos team to book promotion into the first division and will now join the first teamers in the top division.

A week later, qualification into next season’s national league and a chance to face the very best the country could offer beckoned. A top four finish from the 1sts secured a play-off match against Portsmouth Ducks, a local mixed team including five Great Britain internationals.

Tchoukball is the fastest handball sport in the world.

It is a mixed sex sport where teams shoot at frames at either end of a court to score points, with shots being fired in at speeds of up to 60mph.

All of the current squad picked up the sport whilst at University and five players have recently been selected to be part of the Great Britain men’s and women’s squads.

Due to injuries, the University team was down a player and in the initial exchanges the disadvantage was telling. By the end of the second period, the University team was down by twelve and struggling to stop the Ducks’ experienced shooting power.

Cue the soundtrack to Mission: Impossible as minute by minute they clawed back the deficit. Suddenly the team was spreading the play to all parts of the court, scoring points at will and frustrating the Ducks.

With thirty seconds left on the clock came the chance for one final shot. Andy Smith was left with the big decision of whether to pass or shoot. He shot, he scored and with it secured a place in the big time for Portsmouth Tchoukball Club.

Destroyers stung

Finishing third in the Thames Valley Conference table meant Portsmouth had a chance at claiming the Challenge Trophy.

But first they had to beat the Bath Killer Bees at home, something which was going to be difficult after losing 22 players because of injuries. However, in what might have been seen as an easy game last year, the Bees showed no sign of faltering as they, too, wanted the trophy.

The game started with flags being thrown against both teams, but Bath were soon gaining yards and their running game was strong, pushing them into the end-zone and a successful kick meant the Killer Bees were leading 7-0.

Portsmouth’s special teams were struggling against Bath as they had lost one of their key kick-returners. However, their other kick-returner, Fola Dare, made a huge run with the ball to gain Portsmouth the yards that they needed to shake Bath’s

nerves.

The Destroyers were using their running game in the second quarter but more flags meant Portsmouth were being pushed back into their own territory when the ball slipped out of their arms, allowing for a bath recovery. The Killer Bees once more got the better of Portsmouth and managed to fight their way into the end-zone and a successful kick left the halftime score at 14-0 to Bath.

The third quarter didn’t start any better for Portsmouth after a bad punt made its way into Bath’s possession. They were quick to take advantage and put another six points on the board against Portsmouth.

Quarterback Ben Clift was injured during a play and stepped off for Simon Blow to take over, but a bad throw led the ball straight into the arms of Bath who ran for another touchdown and extra point.

In the fourth quarter Portsmouth managed to throw the ball into the safe hands of James

An error by the officials meant Bath went for a field goal on their fifth down but Portsmouth managed to block which was then picked up and ran by Matt Doherty. As it became apparent that Portsmouth weren’t going to win, they bought on third-string quarterback Sam

Forster who made completions that were becoming a rarity in Portsmouth’s throwing game.

However, nothing came of them and the game ended 27-6 to Bath, Portsmouth’s biggest loss in over 18 games.

Portsmouth were one of the most feared sides before Christmas, undefeated for 15 games, before their number of injuries increased rapidly. There is no

doubt next year Head Coach, Russ Hewitt, will be making sure the boys are fit, healthy and injury-free going into the next season so that they can give full commitment to adding another BUAFL trophy to their cabinet.

The Destroyers now bid farewell to 10 graduates whose shoes will be hard to fill, but recruitment next year should help fill the void.

S: All the girls have played so well this season it’s difficult to pick just one. But Nieshia Boal deserves a mention for being top goal scorer and Rosie Bidder for being solid in centre midfield the whole season.

University of Portsmouth women’s 1st football team have successfully won their league with a game left to play.

The whole team has consistently showed a high level of talent and determination as they breezed through their league, only tasting defeat in one game over the entire season.

The 1st’s recent achievement portrays the constant effort the whole team has put in, an achievement that will see them playing premiership football next season.

President Sara Hopes answered a few questions on their well deserved achievement.

Hannah: How did it feel to win the league?

Sara: It felt so good to win the league! We were tied at the top of the table with University of

S: We are losing some great players which is a great shame, but hopefully we can recruit some quality players in for next season to step up to the mark for Premiership football.”

H: Tour is coming up soon and with the teams recent success it will no doubt be the place of celebration.

Do you have anything interesting planned?

S: Tour will certainly be interesting to say the least. We’ve got over 40 girls going, the biggest group we’ve ever had so it’s going to be a brilliant week.

As far as dress ups go you’ll have to wait and see but UPW-

FC never disappoint so we’ll be looking the part out there.

We’re hoping for the triple this season as we won the Sportos dance off, the league and, hopefully, the football out in Italy!

PB’s all round at championships

enormous level of competition, three athletes even managed to gain a place in the final of their respective events.

Victoria Hewett, the club president, placed 1st in her qualifying heat, finishing 6th overall in the women’s 400m.

Likewise, club captain, Mo Abdullahi finished 5th overall in the men’s 400m, having broken his personal best time in both the heats and semi-final.

Lauren Thompson ran a tremendous race in the 60m Hurdles, finishing 8th overall.

With such a promising result under their belt, the club eagerly looks forward to May, where the outdoor version of the competition will be held in the Olympic stadium.

25th and 26th February saw 15 athletes from the University Athletics Club travel to the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, for the BUCS Indoor Athletics Championships.

The competition saw a record number of entries, with over 1000 competitors from numerous institutions nationwide competing in a variety of track and field disciplines.

Mixed fortunes as Netball club draw

Netball Club were keen to continue their Varsity winning streak, after beating their archrivals in last year’s event.

With four teams scheduled to play throughout the day, the fourths began play first.

Captained by Tamara Paton, they began their game with strong defensive play throughout the court.

With some brilliant balls from Wing Attack, Megan Gibson, into shooting player, Sophie Wright, Portsmouth were able to convert almost every shot.

Portsmouth were able to adapt much better to the rainy conditions than Southampton, making sure they played a short pass game with quick movements and no inaccurate dballs. t After a strenuous game with minimal vision, the fourth team managed a brilliant win of 21-14; offering a great ba-sis for the other three teams to efollow.

- As the bad weather continpued, it was up to Holly Formstone, captain of the third team to decide whether to continue on with their game.

After much discussion and organisation, the Southampton girls managed to find spare indoor space, allowing the last three games to continue.

The thirds continued on with their lead, finishing the game at 25-24, a narrow and well deserved win.

Up next were the firsts. Last year saw a massive win for the first team, and the whole club was determined for a repeat.

If we’ve learnt anything from watching Wimbledon, it’s that tennis doesn’t fair well in the rain. With no ball girls or ball boys to cover the courts, and with the weather unable to decide whether to rain or snow, tennis was doomed.

The games were originally cancelled but with the weather finally starting to dry up at around 2pm, Southampton approached the Portsmouth team of Nadine Doutre, Charlotte Bantlemann and Beckie Hings to ask if they wanted to play.

E v e n t u ally it was decid- e d that the game would go

ahead although, due to the massive delays, the rules were altered slightly. The teams would play only 4 games per set and 3 sets at the most. If it was a draw after two sets the third would be a Championship tie-break.

As it turned out, drawing wasn’t in the vocabulary for the Portsmouth girls, who served well despite the tricky court conditions and smashed the hapless Southampton team 120.

It brought their tally for the year up to 11 wins from 11 games, after they blitzed the South East 1A league.

Tasha Bond gave some basic objectives to stick by, looking to put as much pressure on the opposition as possible.

However, Southampton’s attack was strong as their new coach, from a high level superleague team, clearly pushed them to their full potential.

The defensive pair of Sally Tibbitts and Alice Berry remained strong in a bid to keep their score low. However, with three of the first team out with injury and illness, Portsmouth struggled to push the attack.

The final score: 39-13.

Portsmouth’s Roller Hockey team were left wondering where it all went wrong after a humiliating 18-1 loss to Southampton.

Second best from the start, Pompey were unable to cope with a ruthless Southampton outfit that were hungry for goals.

The writing was on the wall from the first minute as the Portsmouth defence were doing everything they could to tame the Southampton attack.

After conceding early, Pompey rallied. Marshalled by the excellent Atkins in goal, the defence looked to keep any potential dangers at bay.

by Nola Hamilton, understood the pressure they faced, and clearly so did their opposition.

Throughout the game, the score remained close and the conversion rate remained high from both teams’ attack.

The spectators were willing Portsmouth to win, even having their own battle with the Southampton’s fanbase. In an exhilarating finish, Southampton intercepted the ball and converted right at the last minute making the score 3231 to the home squad.

The skilful puck retention by Southampton soon took its toll and Southampton led 6-0 by the buzzer.

Buoyed on by terrific support from the crowd, Pompey grabbed themselves a goal.

Some sustained pressure lead to Becker riffling the puck past the keeper.

It was a much more spirited display form the Portsmouth team in the second third, however the skill and pace of Southampton made sure that any hope that Pompey had of getting a result was quickly quashed. Going into the final third Southampton held a 13-1 lead.

The final third went the same way as the others. The Pompey defence did their best to deal with what Southampton had to offer but what Southampton had to offer was too good and finished with an 18-1 win.

After a brief flurry of snow and a quick move of the pitch, game 1 of Softball started with some tight defence from both teams.

The Portsmouth Shafters warming to the conditions quicker than the Southampton Mustangs, whose pitcher could not get used to the conditions quickly enough.

Portsmouth cruised to an easy 13 – 1 win in tough conditions.

The MVP award went to Lydia Tuckey who, in her first match since taking up the sport just four weeks ago, played a blinder taking several catches and making the throws.

Game 2 started far more evenly.

Pitcher Rich Fay started off well, but towards the end of the match the opposition started to read his pitches.

The game was a real rollercoaster affair as the lead was passed back and forth quicly. The highlight was an over-the-fence home run

by Kelvin Harrison, and a magnificent catch by Harrison from a ball hit deep into the right field by the Southampton Captain. The catch ultimately ensured another win for the Portsmouth Shafters; 8-7, and a 2-0 win on the day.

Mistakes seal Southampton win Charlie Price

Portsmouth Men’s Dodgeball team were edged out in a close encounter; 2-0 by Southampton.

The two teams were fairly even throughout, with a marginal difference in quality deciding the game.

The dodgeballers took to the floor late in the afternoon. There was still a healthy crowd present with both teams being well represented.

In the first, of a best of three set match, both teams came out firing.

Most games ended with both teams having payers on the court, however Southampton were more clinical and caught the balls much better than Pompey did.

Knowing they needed to win this set to force a final, deciding set, Portsmouth looked to become the aggressor. Southampton managed withstand this pressure which ultimately frustrated the Portsmouth players.

Errors began to affect Portsmouth’s players, a number of balls were dropped causing some players to get more frustrated.

Southampton, in contrast, managed to keep their cool and take the second and ultimately, deciding set to win 2-0.

Southampton took the spoils in snooker at Varsity. Portsmouth had entered two teams, comprising of the University’s former pool society.

Despite not having their own snooker team, the Pompey pool players stepped up in a brave effort to take on Varsity rivals Southampton at their own game. Fresh from some great performances at the BUCS pool tournament in Great Yarmouth last month, there was a chance of a potential upset.

However, it wasn’t to be. The 1st team lost 7-3 in their team game, while the 2nds went down 6-2, James Bennett and Ross Paterson winning Pompey’s two frames.

A singles tournament was also held, which was eventually won by Southampton’s Alex Lo. Bennett and James Pettitt were Pompey’s best performing players in the competition, both reaching the quarter-finals.

Third year student Tom Thorpe, who recently represented Portsmouth in February’s tournament, felt they fared well against a strong Southampton team.

Thorpe said: “We came up against a very good side in Southampton and, although we didn’t get the result we would have wanted, we certainly didn’t disgrace ourselves.

“I didn’t have the best of times on the day, but then that is how snooker goes sometimes.”

Portsmouth’s squash teams lost to their rivals, despite some entertaining matches and some brilliant individual performances.

With the wet and sometimes snowy weather in Southampton wreaking havoc on many of the outdoor events, many spectators headed indoors to witness the squash, which saw some fantastic performances and thrilling matches.

The 1sts narrowly lost 3-2 to Southampton in a fantastic effort.

Scott Bailey and Adam Woolley lost 3-0 in their games, before Jamie Waters pulled off one of the results of the day, winning 3-0, including an 11-0 whitewash in the final set.

As it was a race to three games, the pressure was on Adam Hill, who narrowly lost 6-11, 10-12 and 5-11 in a brave effort. Mike Burn restored some Pompey pride, victorious in the final match for the first team.

Elsewhere, the 2nds went down 5-0 in the opening match of the day, while the Pompey women lost 4-0.

Varsity ends on high as 1sts dominate the football finale

As the occasion drew to a close, all eyes turned to the 3G synthetic grass pitch for the finale: the men’s football 1st match.

Players from all teams left their comfortable seats in the clubhouse to flood the balcony and enjoy an excellent view of the match.

Portsmouth’s 1st football team are a dangerous ensemble and were eager to ensure the day ended on a high for the University.

They took the lead midway through the first half and did not look back. A dangerous ball by Lance Smith was played into the six-yard area and under pressure Southampton’s centre-half turned the ball into his own net.

High flying Men’s Hockey 1sts took to the pitch full of confidence, but were quickly put in their place by an impressive Southampton team, who hit the boys in purple with a whirlwind start.

Two short corners won by Southampton were followed by two incredible drag-flicks and goals.

mouth’s lead with an eyecatching solo effort. The left-winger stepped inside a challenge and hit a shot onto the inside of the post, and kept a cool awareness as the ball returned to him to finish at the second attempt.

Both teams showed moments of exceptional class but Portsmouth ensured they came out on top. Just before half-time, Lance Smith played a brilliant one-two with Callum Trewavas and ran at goal, but selflessly aimed a ball into the middle that was intercepted.

Portsmouth had the ball in the net for a third time, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. In a move that was replicated Pompey pressure continued to build throughout the half, and the short sharp passing finally paid off when Robert Pace scored a diving reverse sweep just before half time.

The second half continued in much the same way, with Portsmouth piling on the pressure. A bit of clumsy defending from Southampton saw Portsmouth awarded a penalty flick just ten minutes in, which Jacob Saunders put away expertly.

At 2-2 the game was endto-end, with both teams coming close to capitalising and

perfectly from the training ground, Trewavas curled a free-kick that was flicked on and bundled in.

Moments later, however, Portsmouth had their third goal in an open play version of the ruled-out goal. Again, Trewavas crossed from the left for the ball to be flicked on, forcing a good reaction save from Southampton’s goalkeeper. Ryan Baxter, this time, was waiting in perfect position to finish the move off.

Having been defeated by Southampton’s strength in depth in the overall competition, the win ensured the purple sports team returned to Portsmouth with a positive final memory of the day. both keepers making some outstanding saves.

It was going to be Jamie Askam, fresh from a different hockey game, who would make that difference, subbing on only to score with his first touch of the game.

After that, the Pompey side adopted a confidence in their play, which saw them begin to dominate again.

Chances went close but it was Eoin Haughton, who would deflect in a shot from the penalty-spot, to help put the game out of the Southampton reach.

‘Barmy Army’ show immense support despite cricket defeats Adam Higgins

Portsmouth’s cricketers arrived at Southampton at 9am in jovial spirits, with play to commence with the terrace packed with Portsmouth fans in full voice.

In spite of these high levels of exuberance, it was to prove a tough day in the Southampton Sports Hall, as Southampton cruised to a 3-0 victory overall, thanks to some tricky bowling and sensible batting, something all of our teams were affected by.

The 2nds opened up the trio of games, and despite the best efforts of Tim Higgs and Zo Hassan, who both bowled economically in the middle overs, Southampton reached a highly respectable score of 154 from their 12 overs. Portsmouth struggled in reply to this target, with wickets tumbling at a consistent rate, leaving them 60 all out.

After a brief intermission following the Men’s Seconds game came the Women’s opportunity to shine. Openers Emily Jones and Sophie Lewis took to the crease, beginning well with some solid batting from the talented Jones.

Jones was instrumental for Portsmouth, scoring an impressive 50 out of her team’s total of 126 runs, creating a respectable innings. In the field, after a strong start with some economical bowling, Southampton edged towards their target, in spite of losing two wickets in two deliveries, after notable bowling displays from both Jones and Samantha Miles.

It was a valiant effort from Portsmouth’s Women and one that was appreciated by their verbal supporters, none more so than Mr Weller.

Finally it was over to the Men’s 1st Team to try and regain some pride. And after James

Wright opened the bowling with some rapid pace bowling, Tom Sambrook steamed in to clean up the Southampton opener with the very first ball of the second over; cue wild celebrations. However, Portsmouth allowed Southampton to become too comfortable, as the home side began to settle, with two 6’s meaning that one of their batsmen had to retire after reaching 25 runs.

Two 7th over wickets gave Portsmouth the impetus to plough through the Southampton batsmen. Wright and Sambrook continued to cause problems with pacey full and straight deliveries, before Sambrook himself took two catches from the bowling of Barney Atkins, leaving the Innings over with the score at a decent looking 138.

Openers Manro and Atkins set about attaining Portsmouth’s target, finding themselves at 24-1 from 2 overs. Enter Sambrook, who batted sensibly whilst the wickets of Atkins and then Wright fell at the other end, leaving Portsmouth in a spot of trouble at 64-3 from 6 overs. Oldershaw was then run out, with Sambrook left at the other end wondering how he had just lost three batting partners in such quick succession, whilst Southampton appeared merciless and smelling blood.

As Sambrook was then run out, Wicketkeeper David Ramsden was left to face the Southampton onslaught on his own, with a seemingly unattainable task of needing 40 runs to win. However, Ramsden heroically took the game down to the wire, taking the game into its last over, with 19 left to win, before being unluckily bowled off of his pads, meaning a third and final victory in this Varsity battle for Southampton; still not enough to dishearten the immense Pompey following, who sang long into the night.

After clinching the BUCS South Eastern 1A division earlier in the week, Pompey were confident going into the game.

However, this was the same position that the girls found themselves in last year when a lacklustre performance saw them throw away a win, so there was a lot riding on the game.

An early goal from Southampton put them into the lead after confusion in the Pompey defence let the home side in.

Pompey were led to believe they were back in the game following a converted short corner

strike, although it was disallowed for being above the backboard, despite the deflection. A

second goal for Southampton before the break meant they were 2 goals ahead at half time.

The second half started and a fortunate deflection off a flying ball from Sophie Neale meant Pompey were on their way to making a comeback.

Lots of hard work and persistence meant that Pompey won a short corner and a fantastic strike from Tori Clark put the scores level.

Portsmouth momentarily switched off and Southampton’s ladies were quickly back in front with a rapid break and great work from their centre forwards.

Another goal sealed the deal for Southampton and left Portsmouth with a loss two years running in the competition.

Rain, snow and ruined pitches was the story of the 2012 Varsity, in which Southampton retained their title for a fourth straight year.

Portsmouth narrowed the gap on their south coast rival after one of their most successful sporting seasons where they climbed to 27th in BUCS competition, losing with 66 points to Southampton’s 105.

Ten games had to be cancelled at Wide Lane due to the weather, which could not have been more different to last year’s Varsity where any time spent indoors was to take a break from the scorching heat rather than avoid the relentless rain. At this year’s event, the pavilion was filled to the brim by sports people in their teams, singing and

doing all they could to keep in high spirit in between matches.

Netball were seen with a beer funnel out at 12.30pm, enjoying a liquid lunch after hearing that their 2nds and 3rds games had been cancelled. Soon after, Cheerleading were packing up their pompoms as the rainy conditions made it unsafe for any performances from the Phoenix.

Men’s tennis, men’s football 3rds and women’s rugby all fell victim to the appalling weather and had to be cancelled. Men’s rugby and women’s football went ahead, albeit in lake-sized puddles. At one point during the women’s football a sure goal pulled up on the line and the game was rightfully ended ten minutes into the second half.

However, despite the weather, with the finest sports people from universities of the south coast in action there was a di-

verse range of sport to cater for all tastes. Sports that are not seen in the AU were contested, such as dodgeball, pool and roller hockey, and new teams of mixed gender were formed, with male and female teams playing together.

There were all the emotions that can be expected from sport in abundance. Game two of softball had it all, where a last minute catch snatched victory quite literally

out of the hands of the Southampton Mustangs.

Highfield, Southampton’s indoor sports complex, imper-

vious to the weather was able to run its schedule without disturbance. Unfortunately, Portsmouth struggled most at these sports, unable to challenge Southampton’s stronghold in cricket, badminton and squash competitions.

We may have been defeated but if the trend continues at Varsity 2013 Portsmouth will be hot on the tails of Southampton.

Let’s hope the sun shines on that day.
