The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has yet again joined forces, at selected Shavathon venues allowing the public to make a blood donation, along with Shavathon participation. “Blood donations are often used for cancer patients undergoing treatment or blood transfusions, and that’s why we’re putting a call to action to the participants at the Shavathon events.

Cancer survivors find great comfort in this campaign. The CANSA Shavathon is a selfless donation to helping survivors find their comfort in knowing that they are not alone in this.

Parts of Umgeni Water’s operational area are still in a state of drought, a consequence of the El Nino effect.

The affected areas are eThekwini, parts of iLembe District, Ixopo and uMgungundlovu District. Much of eThekwini and uMgungundlovu, including Pietermaritzburg, receive their water from the Mgeni system. The Mgeni system (Midmar Dam, Spring Grove Dam, Mearns Dams, Albert Falls Dam, Nagle Dam and Inanda Dam) has experienced below average rainfall over the past 30 months, resulting in some of these dams remaining consistently at below 30% and 50%. It is as a result of inadequate rainfall and concerns over the levels of Midmar and Albert Falls dams that mandatory water restrictions of 15% have been implemented.

In the Hazelmere system, water restrictions of 40% were lifted on 1st September 2016 following a combined total of 180 mm rainfall that was received in July and August 2016. The Hazelmere system serves areas in the far north of eThekwini and parts of iLembe. The use of an emergency scheme to transfer water from uThongathi River into Hazelmere Dam has been discontinued.

In the Ixopo system, mandatory water restrictions of 50% are also in place as a result of Ixopo Dam remaining consistently low. Ixopo Dam is being supported by the transfer of water into it through an emergency scheme.

Water restrictions and use of emergency schemes have been effective in slowing down the drop in the levels of some dams within Umgeni Water’s operational area. Consumers within the affected areas have begun to appreciate the need for water conservation and for the implementation of water rationing and restrictions as a means to manage the effects of the drought.

Our vision and mission is to be the preferred non-profit organization that enables research, educates the public and provides support to all individuals irrespective of race, creed, color who are infected and affected by cancer.

It is also a time to socially engage with other supporters at the event throughout the night.

Thereafter a closing ceremony commences.

The Opening Ceremony welcomes relayers followed by a Survivor and Caregiver Lap. This lap celebrates the survivors as they lead the first lap followed by the caregivers who follow to recognise their help and assistance to cancer patients. Thereafter an “Opening

The one constant that we can all rely on though, is yes, you guessed it . . . sport. The sporting year is well and truly into second gear with the likes of cricket and football taking centre stage and rugby about to make its long awaited return as well. The month also saw the Laureus Awards (the Academy Awards of the sporting world) take place which dished out a few farcical prizes, just as the Oscars and Grammys always do.

CRICKET is undoubtedly an all year sport and our very own national team are on yet another mission down under. The Proteas are enjoying a rare purple patch and seem unbeatable. Following on from their successful home summer, the team has embarked on a tough tour to the ‘land of the long white cloud’, New Zealand. At the time of writing, the boys had already destroyed their opposition in the one-off T20 international and also edged their rivals in the first ODI. The men in green seem to be building up some serious momentum with a look to the upcoming
