From Executive Artistic Producer Marc Robin

In 2003, the Marriott Lincolnshire Theatre in Chicago received the rights to be the first regional theatre to produce CATS after the Broadway show closed, having run for over twenty years. I was living in Chicago and had worked at that venue as a dancer, and along with the rest of the dance world in Chicago, we were all thrilled with the thought of being a part of this “first” production. It would be one of the most coveted jobs when casting came around.

Like everyone, I emailed the hiring folks at the Marriott that said, “Keep me in mind” to audition. I knew I would be among the hundreds who sought a chance, but it was worth trying.

I was working on the south side of Chicago and was driving in the far left lane of a three-lane road when I got a call on my new cell phone (I felt very fancy!). It was the Artistic Director at the Marriott calling to talk to me about Cats. I was so excited and couldn’t wait to find out what track they were considering me for. After he told me what they wanted me to do for the show, I realized I had not spoken, but instead, had drifted over three lanes to the curb. He asked if I would helm the production as both Director and Choreographer, and it would be a call that would change my life!

My 22-year journey with Cats has introduced me to so many friends, artists, new theatres to create stories in, and the most wonderful memories. Among them are two artists who have become lifelong friends (Buddy Reeder and Joey Abramowicz). Buddy was not involved in this production, but his heart beats in every step, and Joey, who is our Associate Director and Make-Up Designer, continues to inspire our artists with his passion, talent, and love for this show and this theatre. I am grateful to both of them for their friendship and inspiration.

Though I have used the word “my” in this letter, it is anything but mine. This production is the truest example of artistic collaboration, and it would not be happening if it weren’t for the magnificent artists, staff, and designers who have all worked tirelessly for over a year to create this experience.

I am so grateful to have the opportunity to work alongside them all and to present this show to you, our treasured audiences. Thank you for giving us a reason to tell our stories, and thank you to all the artists, administrators, donors, and lovers of theatre who make this all possible.

I really hope you like our show!

P.S. On the opposite page is a short synopsis of the story. Because this is a collection of poems turned into a play, sometimes it’s helpful if you have a bit of a head start on “What are they doing up there?”

OUR STORY OF

GRIZABELLA appears, revisiting this place of her past. She touches old objects, including a “Magician’s Door” reading “THE GREAT MISTO & GRIZABELLA.” SILLABUB appears, and Grizabella runs away.

MUNKUSTRAP, the leader, notices the audience and gives an introduction to Cats and then how they are named.

VICTORIA, a beautiful white cat, remains. She rejoices when the full moon is revealed.

Munkustrap explains that the Jellicle Moon means that OLD DEUTERONOMY will soon arrive and choose one cat for rebirth into a new Jellicle life.

QUAXO suggests JENNYANYDOTS as a candidate, who shows us glimpses of her fantastic past showgirl life.

RUM TUM TUGGER arrives in time for the party, but Grizabella returns. Sillabub tries to connect with her but is denied. Griz retreats, and BUSTOPHER JONES enters for his monthly visit and free food.

A loud crash startles everyone. DEMETER mentions MACAVITY, causing unease. Flashlights and fleeting figures are seen. It’s just MUNGOJERRIE & RUMPLETEAZER.

Old Deuteronomy arrives, and the Jellicle Ball can begin. It’s an “opening ceremony” of sorts.

Part One: The Jellicle Queen is chosen, and she chooses her King.

Part Two: Celebration and preparation of King and Queen Dance.

Part Three: King and Queen First Dance Pas De Deux.

Part Four: All dance in the light of the Jellicle Moon and celebrate the King and Queen.

As cats rest after the ball, Grizabella appears and remembers when she had been the Jellicle Queen. She cries out with MEMORY and the cats see her. Deuteronomy approaches Grizabella.

ACT TWO - Deuteronomy tells Grizabella that memories are of the past. Griz begins to leave, but Sillabub urges her to stay. Bombalourina forbids Sillabub and banishes Grizabella. In an effort to “keep things going,” JELLYLORUM presents her grandfather as the next candidate. GUS takes us back in time when he once played the Great Rumpus Cat.

SKIMBLESHANKS, the railway cat, arrives, but the joy that he brings is quickly interrupted by the entrance of the evil Macavity, who eventually overpowers one of the leaders and vanishes with the cat in tow.

The Magical MR. MISTOFFOLEES appears to save the day. Grizabella is discovered still watching in the shadows, and Mistoffolees “stops time” so Sillabub can present Grizabella as a candidate. Grizabella gives testimony with MEMORY and is allowed to be presented as a candidate along with Gus and JennyAnyDots.

A candidate is chosen and is taken to the Heaviside Layer.

Deuteronomy addresses the audience, offering THE ADDRESSING OF CATS. He reminds them that cats are special. The cats echo this, ending in a final tableau, then a celebratory dance, leaving only Mistoffolees to turn out the lights.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Composer) Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1969) to Cinderella (2021), his work has been consistently seen on world stages. Before the COVID pandemic hit, Lloyd Webber had shows continually running in the West End for 48 years and on Broadway for 41. When Sunset Boulevard joined School Of Rock, CATS and The Phantom Of the Opera, he equalled Rodgers & Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.

Lloyd Webber owns seven London theatres, including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Over the past three years the latter has been completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings has meant that considerable work has been undertaken across his theatre portfolio during the pandemic, including the complete remodelling and reseating of the Gillian Lynne.

Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects such as the Music In Secondary School Trust and commissioning research into diversity in theatre.

Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published by Harper Collins in March 2018.
