A Message from the President Looking Back and Moving Ahead: Fuller’s 75th Anniversary and a Roadmap for Our Future Dear Fuller community, As we welcome another transformative year at Fuller Theological Seminary, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude and excitement for the journey we have embarked upon together. The past year has been one of milestones, celebrations, and visionary strides, and I am honored to share with you some highlights of this momentous anniversary year.

75 Years of Purposeful Impact Our anniversary celebrations were a poignant reminder of the rich history that has shaped Fuller into the institution it is today. For three quarters of a century, we have been at the forefront of theological education, shaping minds, hearts, and lives for service to the church and the world. This legacy inspires us to renew our commitment to fostering a community that reflects the breadth of God’s kingdom.

Inauguration: A New Chapter Begins One of this year’s defining moments was the inauguration of a new era under my leadership as president. Dr. Mark Labberton concluded his decade of service as president midway through the academic year. He led Fuller with a prayerful heart and spiritual wisdom through a season of difficulties facing the church, theological education, and the world. I am grateful for his partnership through an orderly transition and a smooth handoff of the leadership baton. He remains a faithful partner and respected Fuller alum, faculty member, and administrator.

It is a privilege to serve this esteemed institution, and I am humbled by the trust and support the Fuller community has shown me. The inauguration was not merely a ceremony; it was a commitment to carry forward Fuller's legacy of academic excellence, theological depth, and passion for equipping leaders who share Christ’s hope and healing and thereby make a lasting impact on the world.

As we reflect on this significant year, I am struck by the passion and commitment that defines the Fuller community.

I am inspired that I consistently meet so many who love the Lord, love the church, and love Fuller. Together, we have celebrated our history and envisioned our future, and now are taking confident steps toward realizing our dreams.

A Roadmap to Reimagining Seminary Education As we look ahead together, I am pleased to offer an update on FULLER NEXT, our comprehensive roadmap that charts a bold path for the future of our seminary. This visionary document, launched May 2021, reflected months of collaboration, input, and discernment from all corners of our community. It outlines our commitment to holistic formation, innovative learning, and engagement with pressing issues facing the church and society, and we began immediately to implement its strategic vision.

The accomplishments resulting from FULLER NEXT are too numerous to detail here. However, I’d like to highlight five: new degrees, investment in our three campuses, enhanced attention to holistic formation of our students, greater global reach, and renewed commitment to the integration of theology and psychology.

New and refreshed programs are the lifeblood of any school, and FULLER NEXT makes this a priority. Thus far, the implementation of FULLER NEXT has resulted in four new degrees: Doctor of Marriage and Family Therapy, Master of Arts in Justice and Advocacy, Master of Arts in Chaplaincy, and a Korean-language PhD in Intercultural Theology.

These new degrees already make up 11 percent of Fuller’s total enrollment, and more will launch in 2024.

Our campuses—Pasadena, Houston, and Phoenix—are located in three of the five most populous regions in the United States. This presents us with tremendous opportunities to connect with local communities, students, learners, alumni, and donors in creative and life-changing ways. We have already begun to develop and implement exciting plans at each campus location.

Fuller is leading the way in recognizing that the formation of students and learners goes beyond academic preparation.

Spiritual, emotional, vocational, and intercultural formation are equally and integrally important for brave and resilient disciples—so much so that David Wang was recently hired as associate professor and the inaugural Cliff and Joyce Penner Chair for the Formation of Emotionally Healthy Leaders. In this role, Dr. Wang will work closely with other seminary leaders to ensure we prepare our students and learners to thrive and lead through emotionally taxing seasons.

Through innovative online modalities and hybrid programs, we are extending our reach and building a global learning community that transcends geographical and political boundaries. FULLER Equip, our digital gateway to formational leadership training, is just one example. FULLER Equip caters not only to degree-seeking students but also to a diverse group of learners seeking to deepen their knowledge and skills, all while continuing to live and serve in their local context.

More than 60 years ago, Fuller Seminary embarked on a bold and brave experiment: to begin a school of psychology on a seminary campus. Today, Fuller’s School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy remains the premier institution for the integration of Christianity into fully accredited mental health degrees. While it has always been true that students in this school have been required to take theology courses, FULLER NEXT’s commitment to twoschool integration now requires that all students enrolled in the School of Mission and Theology must take at least one psychology course. This is just one more expression of Fuller’s commitment to form holistic and resilient leaders.

We rejoice in the leadership of Chief Operating Officer Ted Cosse who completed his service in this role during 2023, and thank him for leading the faculty, students, staff, alumni, supporters, and friends of Fuller Theological Seminary in shaping the strategic plan that is leading us forward. This team worked faithfully and effectively, and I am grateful.

The 2022–2023 academic year was marked by significant achievements and milestones in the School of Mission and Theology. Our commitment to shaping innovative leaders for vocations in church and society continues to drive our efforts, resulting in a transformative educational experience for our students.

We were pleased to add four talented faculty members to our school this year: Drs. Peter Altmann (David Allan Hubbard Associate Professor of Old Testament), Collin Cornell (Assistant Professor of Bible and Mission), Wayne Park (Assistant Professor of Congregational and Marketplace Leadership), and Chloe Sun (Professor of Old Testament and Assistant Director of the Chinese Studies Center). In addition, we proudly launched two new programs: the Master of Arts in Chaplaincy (offered through Fuller Texas) and the Korean PhD in Intercultural Theology. These new programs and instructors reflect our ongoing commitment to diversity and practical ministry preparation.

Each and every one of our teaching faculty continued to make significant contributions in their respective fields—with a dozen books and many other essays and articles published across the 2022–2023 year. Their scholarly research and Spirit-led reflections on their findings enrich not only our students and the wider academic community but also the worldwide Christian family living out the gospel around the globe.

Two members of our esteemed faculty were honored with prestigious awards: 



rofessor Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen was honored with the C. David P Weyerhaeuser Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the Fuller community over the decades and to the wider realms of theological scholarship.

Professor Christopher Hays’s achievements were recognized with

a fellowship at the Albright Institute of Archeological Research in Jerusalem for his contributions to the field of Old Testament scholarship.

The presence of visiting scholars D. Zac Niringiye and John Perry greatly enriched our intellectual community and fostered valuable interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations. We were also blessed by the contributions of our inaugural group of Meritt and Steve Sawyer international professors: Atef Gendy, Athena Gorospe, and J. Daniel Salinas. In addition, our Global Research Institute (GRI) scholars, hailing from various corners of the world, 12

continued their groundbreaking research to produce contextual teaching resources. Their work exemplifies our commitment to global perspectives and missiological scholarship.

As my term as dean of the School of Mission and Theology comes to a close, I want to express my deep gratitude to the entire Fuller community for your support, dedication, and commitment. It has been an honor to serve in this role and contribute to the growth and development of our institution. I am confident the school will continue to thrive and make a meaningful impact under Dr. Kim’s leadership. May God's blessings be upon us as we embark together on this new chapter!

New Interim Dean Professor Sebastian C. H. Kim assumed the role of interim dean on July 1, 2023. Dr. Kim is the Robert Wiley Professor of Renewal in Public Life and academic dean of Fuller’s Korean Studies Center. He joined Fuller’s faculty in 2017, coming from York St John University in the UK, where he held the chair in Theology and Public Life in the School of Humanities, Religion, and Philosophy for 12 years. Prior to that post, he was director of the Christianity in Asia project and taught world Christianity at the University of Cambridge. We are truly blessed to have someone with Dr. Kim’s achievements and experience serve as our interim dean.

As skilled therapists-in-training, our MFT students gain not only the clinical proficiency to navigate the complexities of human relationships but also a rich theological understanding that infuses spiritual depth into their practice. It is with great pleasure and a sense of profound accomplishment that I reflect on the incredible journey of the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy during this past academic year. Our school stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of psychology and theology—a new paradigm introduced

by Fuller almost 60 years ago. Following is a brief update on each of our programs.

Doctor of Marriage and Family Therapy This hybrid program, launched in Fall 2021, addresses the unique needs of licensed MFT therapists seeking advanced clinical training. With a focus on applied research, and a robust theological foundation, our graduates are well prepared to make impactful contributions across a variety of clinical and consultative settings, from private practice, to hospital systems, churches, and universities. The first DMFT cohort celebrated their graduation in June 2023!

PhD in Clinical Psychology At the heart of our PhD program is an emphasis on research and scholarship.

Our students are prepared to generate and publish groundbreaking research that will shape the future of psychological practice. This, combined with their clinical training, equips them to help nurture and develop the next generation of compassionate and skilled academicians, researchers, and therapists.

PsyD in Clinical Psychology Enrollment in our PsyD degree has nearly tripled over three years, driven by increased demand for doctoral-level practitioners and a revamped curriculum launched in 2017. The refreshed program now emphasizes both therapy and psychological assessment, with a deliberate intent to integrate classroom learning with client experiences in real time. This, coupled with a robust

theological framework, enables our graduates to bring hope and healing to diverse individuals and communities around the world.

Rigorous academic research remains an important part of the school’s work and, in addition to awarding faculty and students with research and conference grants, the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy’s Travis Research Institute celebrated three faculty members who received extramural grants in 2022–2023:   

Developing strong clinical skills is also an important objective of our school.

This year, Fuller Psychological and Family Services served more than 800 clients and provided over 10,000 individual therapy sessions and dozens of psychological assessments to Pasadena and surrounding communities. A new clinic to support our Phoenix MFT program will open Winter 2024.

In closing, I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to every member of our Fuller community—faculty, students, alumni, partners, and friends—for your unwavering support of my deanship the last three years. I am thrilled to hand over the reins to our new dean and longtime faculty member Cynthia Eriksson, who will lead us through the challenges and opportunities we face in the coming years.

New Dean Cynthia Eriksson has been a core member of Fuller’s psychology faculty since 2003 and was named dean of the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy as of September 1, 2023.

Dr. Eriksson has provided administrative and academic leadership in her roles as chair of the Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology (PsyD) program and as leader of the Headington Program in International Trauma at Fuller, through which she has developed research and consultation partnerships in Cambodia, Guatemala, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Liberia, the Netherlands, Spain, Uganda, and elsewhere.

Ethnic Centers Leaning into Diversity for the Sake of Christ-Centered Community Fuller equips interculturally competent leaders from all corners of the global church, affirming God’s work in their home cultures and supporting God-honoring cross-cultural encounters in the US and around the world. Our ethnic centers lead the wider Fuller community to reflect God’s coming kingdom in the here and now.

Center for Asian American Theology and Ministry Fuller’s Asian American Center (AAC) exists to research, equip, and resource the Asian American church. We train and support Asian American leaders and non-Asian Americans who will work with Asian Americans. We help Asian American students of East, Southeast, and South Asian descent, including multiracial individuals and adoptees, grounding their life and work in over 170 years of Asian American history and the particular spiritual and psychological concerns, needs, and challenges of our community. In 2022–2023, we: 



Founded the Asian American Well-Being Collaboratory to develop integrated, connected, and thriving Asian

American pastors and therapists. Jessica ChenFeng and Daniel Lee received the Innovating Forward seed grant funded by the John Templeton Foundation to bring these communities together.

Welcomed Tim Tseng as professor of history of Christianity and Asian American studies. He will research and

promote these knowledge areas and work with local churches to incorporate research insights for discipleship and spiritual formation.

Launched a new Asian American women cohort for discerning pastoral ministry and vocation, led by Rev. Mary

Ellen Azada Extended the impact of the Filipino American Ministry Initiative (FAMI) under the leadership of Gabriel

J. Catanas Received a grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship for Kevin Doi, Fuller chaplain and head of the

AAC’s Pastoral Formation Initiative, to lead a yearlong Korean American pastors cohort Congratulated Dr. Daniel Lee, whose book, Doing Asian American Theology: A Contextual Framework for Faith and

Practice (IVP), received the 2022 award for Excellence in Missiology from the American Society of Missiology

Centro Latino With a focus on comprehensive mission, the Center for the Study of Hispanic Church and Community offers a diversity of high-quality programs deeply rooted in Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit. Our programs seek to respond to the concrete realities of the global Latin community from the commitment of the Christian faith. We offer practical tools and critical reflection for leadership in constant adaptation and with a vocation to serve the kingdom of God. In 2022–2023, we:  

xpanded Spanish DMin and MATM and bilingual MDiv programs, and piloted bilingual courses to engage E Spanish- with English-speaking online students to create a genuinely global educational experience Conducted research on Spanish-speaking congregations’ response to Covid-19 and on Latin youth ministry, both

featured in Christianity Today webinars. Through a Ministry in the City HUB grant, we are presently conducting research on Latino/a pastors in urban ministry.

Deepened collaboration with organizational partners such as Tearfund Latin America, Sojourners, Urban

Strategies, Comunidad Shalom, IFES, and Fuller Youth Institute, and initiated a new partnership with the Church of God in Christ to educate Hispanic ministry pastors Launched the Embajadores, our new Spanish-speaking alumni network, in beta January 2023 and will officially

launch January 2024 Hosted a series of monthly online master classes taught by Centro Latino faculty, each attended by 20–25

prospective students Offered online professional certification programs on a variety of topics, including churches’ response to the

immigration crisis, the mental health needs of Latin American Christian college students, preventing pastoral burnout, church-based community development, and developing Latina church and community leaders Worked aggressively on our communications and marketing strategy, renewing the Centro Latino website,

Korean Studies Center The Korean Studies Center resources the formation of Christian leaders by providing degree programs in Korean for the ministry and mission of Korean churches in Korea, in the US, and in other parts of the world. The KSC now offers three Korean-language programs: KDMin, KDGL, and KPhD. In 2022–2023, we:     

ecruited, resourced, and retained 520 active students in Korean- and English-language programs in online, R residential, and hybrid modes—and facilitated community engagement across all programs Introduced a popular marketplace track to equip business and industry leaders for kingdom work, in addition to

the missiology track of the Korean Doctor of Global Leadership program Launched the Global Leadership Network to connect mission leaders, Fuller alumni, and current and future

students in Asia, Africa, and Latin America Developed curriculum and recruited pastors, missionaries, and NGO leaders as students in the new KPhD degree,

successfully launched in Fall 2023 Hosted monthly seminars and symposia with strong attendance from students, alumni, and friends of the center.

Papers presented at the first symposium, “The Identity and Mission of the Korean American Church,” will be published by Fortress Press.

Sent Dr. Sebastian Kim, academic dean of the Korean Studies Center, to accompany President David Emmanuel

Goatley on a fruitful trip to Korea in June 2023. This trip worked to strengthen ties between Fuller and the Korean church, to encourage Fuller alumni and students, to foster cooperation with the Fuller Korean Advisory Counsel, and to establish new partnerships with Korean theological institutions and mission organizations.

Chinese Studies Center Recognizing the growing local and global significance of the Chinese church, the heart of the Chinese Studies Center is to gather Chinese Christians from different cultural contexts, including mainland China, to learn, cultivate ministry skills, and grow in Christian fellowship in a manner that brings healing, reconciliation, and the offering of the Chinese church’s gifts to the worldwide body of Christ. Leadership Formation Centers Where Leaders Are Equipped to Innovate in Their Callings and Contexts A hallmark of Fuller’s educational approach has always been practical ministry training where rigorous scholarship meets real, everyday life. The strategy of the Leadership Formation Division (LFD) is to equip leaders through research-based resources delivered through relationships that generate lasting results. Financial Stewardship Managing Resources for Sustainable Impact Fuller strives to be a financially sound, transparent, and accountable nonprofit organization. Financial results are impartially assessed and measured by funders, accrediting agencies, Fuller’s leadership and staff, and our Board of Trustees. Fuller has achieved either a surplus or break-even result on unrestricted operations for the last three fiscal years. Transforming Hope Campaign Surpassed $150m Goal Fuller’s comprehensive five-year fundraising campaign, Transforming Hope, far exceeded its original $150 million goal, bringing in just over $193 million by its conclusion in June 2023. The seminary’s donor count increased during the campaign’s run, as did the number of alumni who gave.

“We’re thrilled to have topped our goal. We faced several challenges along the way—including a global pandemic—but this shows that people believe in Fuller and its work of equipping Christians for God’s work in the world,” said Mary Andringa, who chaired the campaign’s steering committee and is a member of Fuller’s Board of Trustees. “This moves us closer to carrying out Fuller’s larger strategic vision and enables us to provide even more people with Fuller’s distinct brand of theological education.”

The money will be used to fund student scholarships, increase faculty support, aid Fuller’s innovative centers and institutes, improve facilities and technology, and provide resources for unforeseen needs as they arise.

Three Campuses, Online Programs, One Community Deepening Collaboration and Engagement for Transformation This has been an exciting year of welcoming our new president, reorganizing our leadership to facilitate deeper collaboration and effectiveness, and increasing engagement across our campuses and with our online community.

While Fuller has three physical campuses—Pasadena, Houston, and Phoenix—as well as exclusively online degree programs, the FULLER NEXT strategic plan expands our commitment to collaborate across the institution and meaningfully engage with our local communities. The deans of both schools, along with Chief Academic Officer Alexis Abernethy, consider intercampus partnership a priority to inform course offerings, faculty deployment, degree development, and student competencies. As we move ahead together, we do so as one global community sharing Christ’s hope and healing in whatever contexts we find ourselves.

Pasadena For 75 years, Fuller’s Pasadena campus has served as the beating heart of our intellectual, social, and spiritual community, even as the seminary’s reach has extended across the globe. And though Pasadena is no longer our only location—for which we give thanks!—it remains a central hub of our learning and our life together. Looking ahead, we anticipate a number of exciting events and degree launches in Pasadena, including 2023–2024 conferences and symposia, an MA in Chaplaincy (currently available exclusively at Fuller Texas), active recruitment for the next dean of the School of Mission and Theology, and operational reorganization to empower Fuller’s gifted staff. We also look forward to sharing and collaborating with our online community and other campus locations!

Texas Fresh vibrancy can be felt across the Fuller Texas campus in Houston, which first opened in 2008. One of this year’s most exciting events was the Fall 2023 launch of Fuller’s first-ever Master of Arts in Chaplaincy degree, offered exclusively through Fuller Texas.

“Fuller’s MA in Chaplaincy reflects the best of theological and psychological scholarship and will become the gold standard of chaplaincy training,” said Chief Academic Officer Alexis Abernethy. “What we learn from the launch in Houston will be leveraged to make a similar degree available at the Pasadena and Phoenix campuses in the coming years.”

Looking to the future, Fuller has begun to explore the possibility of a new MFT degree to be offered in Houston for Fall 2025, alongside a mental health clinic to serve the local community and support student training.

“All of these Houston-based activities demonstrate Fuller’s commitment to bring hope and healing to the greater Houston area,” added Abernethy.

These new offerings join four current degree programs (MDiv, MAT, MATM, MAICS) and one certificate program offered online and in person at Fuller Texas. These programs are contextualized to Houston, and students have a fluid, unified learning experience—from start to finish, including cohorts— through Fuller Texas.

Moving forward, investment in Fuller Texas will enable facility reconfiguration for wider engagement with the local community. Plans include creating a chapel on campus, which will seat 80 to 100 people, and renovating the Looper Commons to allow for use by internal and external groups and organizations. (In the proposed blueprint below, new clinic space is shown in blue next to the campus library in tan. The Looper Commons is located at center, with the proposed chapel space just above.)

“We’re making a strong push into Houston and beyond to let everyone know: Fuller Texas is open for business,” said Chancellor Wayne Park. “During the past year we’ve hosted a homecoming celebration, film screenings, symposia, speaker panels, and recruiting events. There is so much excitement and energy!”

Park continued, “Fuller Texas is growing in every way—in our programs, personnel, depth, reach, momentum, vision and direction. Investment will help shape global evangelicalism in the next generation and beyond, leaving an indelible impact on the shape of things to come. I am incredibly hopeful and enthusiastic about the important work ahead of us!”

Arizona Thanks to the support of generous donors to the Phoenix campus, Fuller Arizona will soon offer assistance to meet mental health needs in this underserved community. Fuller Arizona Mental Health Services, housed in the Carol and David Eaton Clinic, is scheduled to begin operations by January 2024, according to Ted Cosse, executive director of Fuller clinics. In addition to serving individuals, couples, and families, the Phoenix clinic will provide a critical element in MFT students’ supervised training, setting them on a strong vocational path toward their future as licensed mental health professionals. With donor support, we are also exploring additional clinic sites throughout the Phoenix area.

Students in the program will continue to work directly with faculty members and other seasoned licensed therapists in the Phoenix area, all of whom are committed to training highly qualified clinicians and creating lasting alumni networks. Key components of both the two- and three-year programs are clinical training and spiritual formation.

Through the generous support of local donors, Fuller Arizona has expanded its faculty and staff this year, including three full-time faculty members, three full-time staff, and a full-time director for the new Fuller Arizona Mental Health Services clinic.

The seminary hopes to double MFT enrollment at Fuller Arizona within the next two years and is considering the possibility and implications of degree offerings from the School of Mission and Theology. Through these efforts and more, we will ensure that Fuller Arizona students are equipped in a supportive community of faculty and fellow students to integrate Christian faith with their desire to bring healing and wholeness to individuals, couples, and families.

Online Programs The FULLER NEXT strategic plan involves intentional development of in-person, online, and hybrid modalities by which students may earn an academic degree from Fuller. Guided by Fuller’s Office of Teaching & Learning and in collaboration with faculty, the seminary has continually refined online course delivery and flexible degree formats. This decadeslong initiative involves extensive and ongoing research into best practices to cultivate learning contexts that are supportive and representative of the highest standards within graduate education.

With flexible formats that include the possibility for students to remain in their contexts, Fuller provides options to complete various degrees fully online or through a hybrid of online and on-campus courses. Given Fuller’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, which includes attending to accessibility, the Office of Teaching & Learning supports Fuller’s formational educational efforts by promoting the development of accessible courses and instructional content. Their mission is to support teachers and learners across all modalities.

In-Person Only Online: Several SMT Master’s programs are offered entirely online, and hybrid programs also involve online coursework. Online courses are carefully designed and developed through collaboration between faculty and the Office of Teaching & Learning, which provides instruction in course design, development, and technology. For online degree programs, field work and practicums require local engagement and do not require students to travel to any of our campuses.

Online and In-Person: Hybrid courses and programs, such as Pasadena’s MDiv hybrid cohort and Houston’s MA in

Chaplaincy hybrid program, are achieved through a combination of face-to-face and online instruction, and other degree requirements (field work, practicums, etc.). Residency requirements vary by program but typically include specific phases or modules to be completed at one of our campuses or learning sites. Hybrid programs are exclusively completed within cohort learning structures and are therefore more rigid in schedule and pacing.

In-Person: For in-person courses and programs such as our School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy programs, all instruction takes place face to face at a Fuller campus or other off-site locations. This traditional model of education continues to be important, even as technology enhances teaching and learning in the classroom. Fuller’s commitment to the highest standards of accessibility demands the development of course content in various formats to meet the needs of diverse learners, even for in-person instruction. This involves leveraging online tools to make course content more accessible.

Each Fuller degree program, regardless of modality, is designed with formative education in mind. We prioritize interpersonal teaching to form leaders spiritually, academically, interculturally, vocationally, and emotionally as they share Christ’s hope and healing. We recognize that students are deeply rooted in their local contexts with the potential for missional application of their learning, especially when they study online.
